I've always been drawn to the clothing and hairstyles of these times. Everybody just looked so much nicer and put together. I mean, I definitely love my oversized crew neck pullover jumpers and soft joggers, but there's just something about the way they used to dress that makes me wish we still dressed like that! It reminds me so much of my great grandmother Margaret and how she would pin her hair into little curls before bed, and then long before any of us were awake she would be dressed, eating a bowl of cheerios with her hair all curled up and drinking a small cup of coffee in the silence with a newspaper and the windows open. Even as the years progressed it was like she still lived in the past.
So.. is nobody gonna talk about how she’s so calm and there’s litterally a war going on
Kind of hard to be in a panic when it is either not close to you or it has been going on so long you are just used to it. Kind of like how people aren't panicking over toilet paper anymore or excessively worried that they are going to die if they catch the virus.

Lol yep it's a little different when you're suddenly woken by an ear-splitting siren and "INCOMING! INCOMING! INCOMING!" being blasted through a tannoy/speakers in the corner of your bivvy. Pants already on, so that's ok... Check. Wrestle on cargos and tee-shirt... Check. Feet in Boots (pre laced to save time) ... Check. Grab helmet, vest, webbing, personal weapon... Check. Sprint for hard over, and "relax"... Settle down and listen to the C-RAM start spraying HE rounds at the incoming rockets, interspersed with lots of cussing, swearing and piss-taking over who is dressed in what... Good times 🤣
She didnt had to go so i think her only stresses that have to do with WWI would be economic and losing any male family member/friend
I remember when i was in the last year of primary school (age 10) and we were to go on a school trip to the black country museum in Birmingham to a living Victorian village. We were required to dress as Victorian children and my mother was a seamstress for many years and she sewed me the most realistic uniform that she could and I got extra credit for my uniform but I forgot my wool tights and I was absolutely freezing for the whole trip. I will never forget my mother's pride in sewing me that beautiful costume but because I forgot my tights it was absolute hell. I never told her that of course.
Oooh! I am in love with the Victorian era! Though I have sewn a few dresses over the summer holidays last year, I still need to make a panniers (hip pad, not 1700’s French crinoline)

I'm 24 year old , I wear like this style in my everyday life.
My mother (god bless her ) sews my clothes it's very modest and respectful.
Except I put on a long scarf to cover my hair / hijab and the skirt is bit longer .
I like to toy around with making different historical styles fit with the modesty I want as a muslima, though I haven't been able to do much actual experimentation yet - just nosing about and theorizing.
0:50 It might have been on QI, but I remember hearing that one English monarch (Elizabeth I, maybe?) demanded that men of the court double up their hose because she disliked the sight of their leg hairs sticking through. :D Not sure if it's true, but I find it rather amusing, nevertheless.

@@KathrynMoncoeurFilms I can vouch for forgetting being easy. I don't think I've ever gone more than a month though before the actual hair begins to bother me. Fortunately the same skin issues that caused me to shave less in the first place have also caused the growth to slow significantly.

‘Fashion’ today is just so awful - everyone looks so slovenly - no pride or sense of style. And everything is cheaply made and ‘throw away’. I find it difficult to look nice for a reasonable price.
Please do wear what you love and makes you feel happy. Why not? I frequently get into my 1890s clothes, and not just for the days I volunteer at a historic home. And when I go to work I often wear a waistcoat I knitted from a 1940s pattern (or perhaps 30s?), along with a pair of muffatees I designed. People love it - I know because lots of them tell me, and some even want their pictures taken with me! (It's the clothes they like for sure - I am not the least bit photogenic...)
I waited until my 40s before I started doing this. Silly me, now I wish I'd started sooner. (By the way, if anyone thinks it frivolous or "not sensible", or doesn't like the look of it, so what? Give them a cheery and wish them a lovely day - and mean it. I'm truly happy for them to wear and look at the things that make them happy and if they don't feel the same for me it's of no consequence to me. So far, I haven't met a single of those people, though.) :-)

@@Rachel-fi4sc There were plenty of historical purses, reticles, satchels, and of course, exterior pockets that were tied undergarments. Several articles suggest it's more about fashion, and how the garment fits on a woman, putting anything in a useful pocket would mar the smooth lines. I wear a lot of voluminous skirts, and they have ample pockets. However, my a line dress skirts have none.
You can also alter an A-line skirt to have pockets.
Right?! Hard to think we’ve advanced so much but ditched the useful pockets for some reason.
Pockets used to come separately from dresses back when the skirts were really big. They were never quite incorporated into dresses and skirts when they became shorter and slimmer.

This was my grandmother's time, she was a young woman dating in 1912, married in 1916. Her wedding outfit looked very similar to this lady's. Any of you ladies who've commented about wishing you could wear these clothes, well buy the patterns and make them! Sewing is not hard. It's fun making your own clothes and create your own style. I hope you go for it!

Beanie.Girl I’ve always wanted to see how kids dress. They could have the elite super wealthy and also more average. There would be fewer videos, but it’d be a nice addition. Like how boys were in dresses in many eras and didn’t have hair cut until a certain age. Or what was deemed appropriate for girls, when hem lines started to matter for them. Who would do up the buttons? How was their hair worn? When did they have it up, or was it only when they married? I’d love to know!

So funny, I think of a full skirt as getting in my way & almost being restrictive unless I'm careful & coordinated lol. But in this time they were about freedom of movement & not having to think so hard about your clothes restricting you!

We are doing a WW1 soldier soon but we'll try and schedule a civilian man at some point.
What I love about this series is it gives you history of the clothing but also tells a story.
I found this video very interesting, and wonderfully made too - the narrating voice is soothing and warm, and accompanies the video very well! For one, I didn't know corsets were pretty much rejected in this time period, though it definitely makes sense in context. I was wondering, though, how young ladies with bigger chests would support their breasts, as all the lovely ladies in this video have smaller chests and therefore not much to be supported by those light chemises.
It was the very young women who rejected corsets, those already wearing them were slower to give them up. Many never did, especially prior to the development of a bra of any efficiency!
Pauline Loven I'm not an expert in the wearing of corsets or anything like that, but I do know that girls start wearing corsets at very young ages. So maybe girls with bigger chests could've quite literally been suppressing their chests for their entire lives. I have also heard that corsets are more flexible than people think, so the corset possibly could also have just molded to fit the wearer and still provided the support needed that way, even though larger chests were more frowned upon in this time period.
That's just my speculation, I don't know if it's true.
Pauline Loven Not to mention that World War I pretty much drove corsets out of mainstream fashion because the steel that was normally used to make the boning in corsets was needed to make military equipment.
I was wondering about this too. My guess is that they just stuck to corsets.

y'all saying you'd actually wear this but don't have the confidence: go for it. I dress similarly to this, and I started out very slow because I had no confidence in going out in public wearing old fashioned stuff. Now, I am told almost every day that I look like a "french working woman from the 1930s" (that's how my brother keeps describing it) and I have never had so much confidence, it's wonderful!!

Reminds me of how my great-aunt dressed. She was born in 1890 and she continued to dress basically the same as what is featured here until well into her 90's.

My great aunt told us when we were kids that when she was young (WW1 era), young ladies did not go out without their stockings on. Since it was the early 1970's when she told us this, I pictured the hell of wearing pantyhose everyday. Silk hosiery with garters would have been heavenly.

Was bullied by boys and girls. Called me virgin, prude, old, boomer, ugly, said I should show skin and be liberated.

As a knitter for 35 years I've known the history of my craft. 1910s were the years where it all began.
