  • I think SelecTV was in several areas of the US, but they advertised specifically to Sacramento since cable was not available here til about 1987. This was a service where you rented a microwave antenna and tuner to get the channel; it was easy to build your own and get it for free however. In Sacramento prior to being SelecTV this was called ONTV, and MovieVision before that. I'd almost convinced my parents to try it out around this time, but was horrified when I called and asked if they were in stereo and was told 'no'! (Empire Strikes Back in MONO?? I don't think so!) I wasn't the least bit sorry when they went out of business shortly afterwards.

My father had "SelecTV" back in the 80s. It aired on KWHY Channel 22 in Los Angeles during weekday afternoon and evening hours after Business News (known as "The Business Channel") and all weekend. This is where I grew up watching all those classic films, short films, music videos and more. I had alot clips from my dad's tapes, already on Dailymotion.

I miss it. As a kid, saw so many classic movies for the first time on here, even some relatively obscure 80's horror. I liked the shorts they showed between the movies, too.

I have part of one adult movie recorded from when it was MovieVision and it was definitely NOT edited. Did they ever start cutting them later? I know there were "cable versions" of some porno movies.

Was Sacramento the biggest TV market without Cable TV? I couldn't believe they came in 1987? That late? Gosh, we've had cable on & off since August 1994, since there's more channels than broadcast TV, & it;s better, too.

Needless to say, the Oddity Archive brought me here.

@fijiboy68 What was that- a code to be able to watch it at all, or did it just lock out the nightly porn movies?

We had SelecTv in Milwaukee from ~1979-1984 when Time Warner came in. I remember the boys on the block trading tips on how to jack the signal late at night so they could watch the soft porn. :/

Did you know that: THIS IS REAL BY THE WAY, ODDITY ARCHIVE KNOWS IT!: During the late-night hours (during their "Adults Only" programs), the Fort Lauderdale feed of ONTV actually managed to somehow broadcast hardcore adult content? I feel secure knowing we don't have to deal with THAT anymore.

Certain large markets like miami, sacremento, phoenix and chicago didn't want cable either A. Because they were full of monopolies or B. Local politics, than again living in boulder creek (a small town 20 miles out from san jose, 15 miles out from santa cruz) Iv'e heard that they had trouble getting cable to remote areas (my older cousins lived there in the early to mid 1990's and no cable in the house until roughly 1997) so it was even later if you live in a remote area (i'm only 16 so i can't really attest to this and oddity archive sent me here)
