But then they switch focus to this sort of sci fi plot, aki becomes wholly irrelevant, crow hogan and his fucking pigeon deck, and they even further drop the ball with the zone plot by having him just be some rando cosplaying yusei
I disagree, I think Vrains needed more filler. Yusaku is the only protagonist that does not have fun dueling, and he never got an arc where he learns to have fun. Give him a low stakes tournament arc for it, use that school dueling club for it so the school setting isn't so wasted, let him bond with Aoi and Go Onizuka over dueling for entertainment since those 2 do that for entertainment as their normal jobs anyway.
Yusaku not having fun was the point, I'd argue. He didn't really have a childhood or parents to teach him how to properly socialize with people due to the Hanoi Project. Initially, Yusaku wanted revenge against the Hanoi Knights. AI, the Vrains, and the card game itself was simply a means to an end for that. I feel his character was designed to be antithetical to the other Yugioh protags as Vrains' themes weren't necessarily about friendship and happy endings. Heck, even in all the Vrains openings, Playmaker never smiles.
My favorite tidbit about Vrains will always be the scenario writers saying that writing good duels for the series became harder and harder as cards got more powerful, faster, and more spammy. And that tracks! How are you supposed to have emotional duels when they end in one turn cycle?
@@jjasuka Bullshit. They managed off things so he wouldn't lose. He should have lost to Aoi in their duel for example, but they gave him a random, inexistant anti-burn card just so their precious Soulburner wouldn't lose.
Some people also theorize that Borrelend Dragon (the Borrel/Rokker Link-5) not appearing in VRAINS is also a sign of it being rushed. I personally also think this with Borreload Riot Dragon not showing up. It would be odd for just Playmaker to do a ritual, and not his rival no? Oh also AI’s English VA is Yuya. That should explain many things.
The link 5 that was annojnced if I recall correctly mentions Rokkets in its effect, something the other Borrel didn't do, so I think it was more legacy support than a thing for the show. When the shows end they like to merge the characters series of cards, like Yusei getting cards that mention Synchron, Junk, Stardust and/or Warrior Synchro, which are his most prominente series of cards
My biggest problem with Vrains so far has been the amount of times someone summons a low attack monster and are told it was a mistake before everyone acts surprised that momsters have abilities and attack points are irrelevant

Honestly I wish Vrains had a Manga so badly...so many of its problems would've been fixed in the Manga and it wouldn't have been a billion episodes of meandering and padding
The Link World animation was during the Hanoi Knight duel, the Go duel, the Aoi duel, and the first 2 Revolver duels. I believe after that, starting from the Emma duel, the animation clears up. Holly Angel gets her iconic summoning animation after that and the animations in the Link Arrow animations in the Akira duel were dynamic Also, I’d argue that Reiji/Declan from Arc V, above all, was the duelist that knew how to duel. Nothing was ever unaccountable for him. He did infinite loops and built crazy boards. His turns against Yuya in the Round 2 fight even /look/ cool.
The biggest problem with vrains is the ending. Instead of learning to move on, socialize more, and open up, Yusaku willing decides to disappear into the VR world. They try to paint it as a good thing and healthy thing but it's the complete oppisite
I feel like two of the most prolific "posts that escaped containment" posters on Tumblr are Thyrell and Teaboot, and I'm mutuals with both lol they're great. There's also the pink one we don't talk about anymore.... nor should we
Vrains Arc 1 (sub) was peak Yugioh for me alongside S4 of GX. It was SO god damn good at showing off hyper-competent duelists. It easily had the best duels and least friendship speaches at that. Go Onizuka vs Revolver to this day is my favourite anime duel and made me pick up pure-gouki's (none of that warrior soup crap).
I just finished Vrains, and boy did they fumble so many character arcs. Even though I thought there were crazy good duels in S3, they really made so many good characters from S1 eat so much dirt by this point. It felt like kicking a dog while it's down but for the entire supporting cast
They had a concept but then the ending of Arc V screwed things hard so they spent the entirety pf Season 1 playing catch up and only got stuff together in Season 2 but by then it was too late to fix the bigger issues.
this is why you dismantle every time you open packs. so you dont have to look through your collection. if you dismantle after every opening you know every card in your collection has been vetted.
The thing that made me drop vrains was Blue Angel going through like 4 different arcs centered around her losing duels for being a woman and resolving all of them with her losing a duel for being a woman. That and season 2 where they dueled Bohman 6 times and his deck never got interesting
Not to mention he never beats Yusaku, but we're supposed to believe on the _fourth_ try - and Yusaku still hasn't ever lost, _and_ it'sthe end of the season - that THIS is the time he'll pull it off.
A lot of the west coast has decentish public transportation. Same thing with major cities in the North East. Like idk where MBT lives but its certainly not in those places.
I feel like all the yugioh series have potential of varying to degrees for varying things but ultimately fall short. Even the best ones are still not great in the grand scheme of media. They’re still fun if you play the card game though.
Ai wasn't "evil" in the last season, so much as depressed. Yeah, he's doing bad things but they're not done out of malicious intent. And then you get to his duel with Playmaker, and he tells him what his end goal is. He's trying to off himself.
See, my initial thought about the midwest thing was "even if you're white, this is how you disappear", but then the angle of taking random girls out from diners as a vagabond came clear and its like "ohhh, noooo, *you're* the one making people disappear, that's the demographic for this".
Season 3 had an interesting premise but by all metrics it was a bad season. Granted big parts of why it is bad came down to the animation studio was a crumbling shitshow to the point the season abruptly just ends out of nowhere with 6 or 7 plot threads completely unresolved

@@elin111 that's exactly it, with the show being cancelled and less than 20 eps to wrap things up, having the focus entirely on Ai instead of side characters that had 2 seasons of development that went in circles or nowhere, that was a right decision. It is not "good" because the seasons prior had those flaws and it didn't have time to fix it, so by just focusing on the parts that were cool made it more enjoyable

i would be down to watch the yugioh animes cause some of them do really have great moments, I love What DM did with marik as a villian, all the way from battle city to the end. I love the entirity of the third season of GX with yubel as the villain, her whole arc was so interesting. I think 5ds is the best all around anime and one that I would probably watch if i had to choose one. I actually like the idea of yuma as a character for zexal as a regular guy that actually sucks ass at dueling at the start (the other series but mostly 5ds have protags who are just gods at yugioh and i think it becomes boring after a while). Arc-V. And of course people always say that vrains is super good. My problem with this is that every single series is WAY TOO LONG. each series is just about 150 episodes and i am NOT sitting through that for SIX series straight. I am caught up to one piece and im never doing that again for another series lol. if all the yugioh series were just condensed to only be the good parts of each season and each was maybe like a 3rd (50 eps) to half (75 eps) of their length per series i would def be more inclined to watch
Best watch it in sub. Yumas dub voice is one of the main reason people hate Zexal. Zexal itself isn't bad at all btw in fact it's probably one of the best but the issue for everyone is Yuma's a kid and isn't instantly the best duelist.

Zexal is basically the original DM with a few twists and changes to the story and imo it actually improved it.
Vrains was pretty ass, but I'm not even sure how much of that was because of production issues and how much of it was just baked in. It baffles and upsets me looking at Team Zaizen and realizing that these people do know how to write characters who are actually characters, but none of that effort could be spent on Yusaku's group. Why would I want my protagonist to actually be interesting? Surely surface level themes of trauma will take the place of an actually fleshed-out character, right? And it has Revolver, who is just the fucking worst.
Vrains is so bad?! Now we have go rush, not have any plot. They duel for ramen or some stuff like this. Less pilot duels, just duel for showing the new cards. I watched yugioh every week since 5ds but first time I quit watching go rush. I quit Kuaidul or someshity name meaningless char. On the other hand rush duel cards and duels are fun but animes are very bad :(
Rush duels Premise: have fun. Check Set-up: draw until 5, unlimited summons, sending and returning cards to deck for costs, maximum summons. Check Execution: komoney prints garbage cards that will never see the light of day when a new card is released that replaces it. You can run three of the same cards unless it has a legend tag, which reduces variance. They print card that induce nostalgia but don't improve its execution like fusions. They could have made all fusions contact fusions that send cards to the grave to fuse them instead of printing the fusion card and then introduce contact fusions again. No check Card design: art? Great Effects? Varies between too good decent and practically useless. Archtypes? It's almost non-existent, but those who do have very weird styles like noodles and baseball. Yet some are great like harpies, sevens road, dragons. Debatable. Anime execution: the absolute randomness of episodes outside of small arcs. Meh. Tension? Nope. Memorable characters? Few. Result: I'll print my own cards to play rush with friends because I just hate how cards are made to be useless most of the time.
@salihhtamer no I just clicked the video and scrolled to see a rush duels comment on how you didn't like it, and I commented on how I believe konami made a nice structure for the format but still make trash that makes me not wanting to play it even if it does come to the west since they still print bad cards for the sake of filling holes in decks. I just tend to write long replies to vent my frustrations of konami.
the summon animations are hype and its perfectly written up until the last season. Joseph watched the shitty dubs which has shitty voices and also shitty music. Definitely the best anime
@@ramennoodles776 he did cause I think he was watching it on cartoon network or whatever it aired on. He complains about them just reading effects the whole time but the JP VAs and the music make it sound hype the whole time
Imagine we cut Roboppi VS Soulburner, had Revolver beat Soulburner (he did have game and misplayed which was infuriating) and then we could use the 2 episodes we spent on Soulburner fighting A VACCUM CLEANER be spent on Revolver VS Ai.

Execution: komoney prints garbage cards that will never see the light of day when a new card is released that replaces it. You can run three of the same cards unless it has a legend tag, which reduces variance. They print card that induce nostalgia but don't improve its execution like fusions. They could have made all fusions contact fusions that send cards to the grave to fuse them instead of printing the fusion card and then introduce contact fusions again.

Effects? Varies between too good decent and practically useless. Archtypes? It's almost non-existent, but those who do have very weird styles like noodles and baseball. Yet some are great like harpies, sevens road, dragons.

Anime execution: the absolute randomness of episodes outside of small arcs. Meh. Tension? Nope. Memorable characters? Few.
Result: I'll print my own cards to play rush with friends because I just hate how cards are made to be useless most of the time.

@salihhtamer no I just clicked the video and scrolled to see a rush duels comment on how you didn't like it, and I commented on how I believe konami made a nice structure for the format but still make trash that makes me not wanting to play it even if it does come to the west since they still print bad cards for the sake of filling holes in decks. I just tend to write long replies to vent my frustrations of konami.
the summon animations are hype and its perfectly written up until the last season. Joseph watched the shitty dubs which has shitty voices and also shitty music. Definitely the best anime

@@ramennoodles776 he did cause I think he was watching it on cartoon network or whatever it aired on. He complains about them just reading effects the whole time but the JP VAs and the music make it sound hype the whole time
