I was a test driver for American Motors / Jeep / Renault in the 80s; I was lucky enough to drive many thousands of miles in these (turbo only, non-turbo was not spec'd for US sale, I think). It's an amazing car, for the open road. A French 911, and would bite you if mistreated. We were ready to go to market, then Chrysler came along and bought AJR. A bit of work to drive, but fairly comfortable, as long as it didn't get too hot outside. The turbo V6 in the back was a joy to listen to over the miles. It's not as weird as you portray. But thanks for brining back some memories.
They're not just metric tires, they are Michelin TRX. You can still get them new but they cost a lot to replace, as I think Michelin only produces a few batches per year. And of course, just like the PAX you had on the Phantom, the rims are specific, so you can't put anything else without replacing them.
I had exactly this model in red when I was in my early twenties (about 1992) they depreciated like hell from new so they were a good alternative to the typical 80's hot hatches. great video, it brought back some great memories. These were highly regarded for their handling and at times even better than Porsches back then but not being an established well known brand and quite niche it did not sell that highly. while Hoovie is a man of other means and always gives us the goods.
Hoovie is levelling up way more than daddy doug in the quirky cars game
"The 80s was not a good period for performance or quality"
Japan: what?
Japan peaked in the 90s.... Alot of 80s Japanese cars still sucked lol
Planet Spud true, but many, many did not..... ie the Mazda RX7 FC3S (especially with the turbo) and many Nissan Skylines, you have the early 80’s Turbo RS and the big dog R32 GT-R that came out in 1989.
70s 80s and even some 90s japanese cars had one big flaw: the powertrains more often then not outlasted the bodies. It is well documented how poor rustproofing was on japanese models.
dont be butthurt about it and move on in life
Buick Regal GNX: Am I a joke to you?
Those seats look like “E-T” from the movie. And I see a little Mitsubishi Starion/Chrysler Conquest in the rear end.
Exactly what I thought
I thought the same thing!!!
i have a 87 conquest (for sale illinois) the tail lights are much more square on the conquests
Yeah.. I was referring more to the rear quarter panel resembling the conquest.
Yeh, they all copied the Alpine!
That Renault radio stalk is still used in today's Renaults. Highly intuitive while driving.
And on Dacias aswell. :)
does this remind you of the foxbody mustang?
Easiest to use radio stalk even to this day.
I love this channel for cars like these. RUclips is full of lanborghinis and mclarens. This is genuinly something else and interesting
THIS is what a poster car should look like. Been wanting one of these for years. Get ready for Alpine V6 prices to go up lads!
Car enthusiasts: "Renoh Alpeen"
Casual Americans: "Renalt Al-Pyne"
It's actually Reh-no hahahaha
nope, it's rönöö :D
@Alfred Barham in French we pronounce it Alpeen
Car enthusiasts: NISS-san, Sue-bar-ROO, MAZ-da
Casual Americans: NEE-san, Sue-BAR-roo, MARZ-da
It doesn't matter, Americans won't be able to correctly pronounce it either way
9:58 kills me. Looking at the wipers like a 2 year old kid seeing his first fire truck
That cockpit is giving me Renault Fuego flashbacks.
Farrkkkk!
My old man had a Fuego when I was growing up. He absolutely loved it!
Had to get rid of it when a bracket for the clutch cable snapped and took it to a "Specialist" who took it all apart only to realise it was a bracket and then couldn't put it back together again
@@mickeydee3595 , the Fuego was gorgeous from every angle and even the interior was a beautiful place to be in. But it did have some technical issues and the body was very, very rust-prone. Probably only Alfa Romeos were quicker form 0 to 100% rust.
@@FlorinC1984 We are in Australia so rust wasnt an issue for my old man. He absolutely loved his and even to this day he gets somewhat upset when what happened to it is brought up.
What colour was yours? His was white over black bumpers with the yellow foglights haha
He met my mum when he had his fuego and my mum would always know it was him coming down the road to pick her up from the "Yellow lights" haha
Still this Alpine was much bigger, better equipped and faster than Fuego..
@@poplaurentiu4148 Ofcourse it is lol, The fuego was just a run of the mill sports car where as the Alpina was Renualt Alpina giving everything they had.
Like comparing a BMW 318is to a M3
There’s a modified intake manifold for those cars that fixes the issue with the front two cylinders being starved for fuel. Another plus is, you can then use a Holley carb.
Yup, the owner of the Renault Alpine Club UK makes them i believe.
Others have fitted the R25 injection and ECU to cure the fuel starvation and make it even quicker.
My friend Fred had one of these, it broke, and then he had two broken ones in his driveway. I believe he still has them, 25 years later.
He's sitting on an investment
i'd love to see Tyler or Daddy Doug trying out other 80's &90's cars that never made it over there at the time, but may have now come in on the grey market like Citroen BX and XMs, Renault Clio Williams, Sierra Sapphire Cosworth, or even a Metro 6R4
How about the Renault 5 (GT turbo), great car.
Citroen CX Break. This thing looked like a space ship. I had an exchange student from the U.S. as a guest in the early nineties (after the CX production ended) and he was absolutely impressed when he saw one of these.
I think the Cylons drove one of these in a Batllestar Galatics episode
Wheeler Dealers with Edd did an Alpine and put a new carb arrangement on it.
Yeah I remember that. A Holley carb like American muscle cars.
That was an a310 movies is the next generation
Yodastien same engine. The same mod would be applicable here.
What they didnt show was the heads had to come off as he warped them. And then Mike somehow blew the Un1 gearbox, so a replacement had to be found.
DJ_PaulTUK how did you find out that info?
brewer is a donkey as soon as that gauge started going up he should have stopped
The way the front looks almost reminds me of the XB Interceptor from Mad Max
That’s my car doppelgänger thought too.
Yeah!!! It's like the alter ego of the XB Interceptor!!!!
They're not just metric tires, they are Michelin TRX. You can still get them new but they cost a lot to replace, as I think Michelin only produces a few batches per year. And of course, just like the PAX you had on the Phantom, the rims are specific, so you can't put anything else without replacing them.
Imagine bringing this to Radwood, heads would explode
There was a brown one at Radwood Austin this year, and my head did explode a bit.
This is my favorite YT chanel , iam french, so really glad to see a french car on here ;)
I had exactly this model in red when I was in my early twenties (about 1992) they depreciated like hell from new so they were a good alternative to the typical 80's hot hatches. great video, it brought back some great memories. In their day they were a very formidable car you could sit in the fast lane with the headlights on and everything would get out of your way. Happy days......
I absolutely LOVE that car. Never seen one in my 43 years on this planet. Just crazy.
I've seen one parked today
This is the most interesting car i have seen Hoovie review . Fantastic
I think this generation of apline is just so damn cool, from the cockpit to the engine to the look, just everything about it is 80‘s in the best way possible
Man, it's actually a beautiful car. That pearl white is in amazing condition.
I have never seen this car before but it’s 80s perfection. It’s beautiful.
Even the face-lift one with pop-up headlights is one of the most beautiful cars ever I've ever seen.
Doc: "Marty, we have to buy an Alpine in order to fix things in the future!"
Maybe they should have used the Alpine as the Time Machine instead of the DeLorian. I think it would have been even more cool than the stainless steel wonder. If that's possible.
1:25 You know it's gonna be a good video when Frank is in it
Hi, I’m from South Africa, if you ever need metric tyres, give me a shout, we use them an I’ll help you to buy the correct ones.
How much are 190/390 HR 390?
Where about?
I'd take the *Alpine* over the Murci...
This car is the result of a passionate night between a foxbody Mustang and a DMC-12.
What in the world is this fantastic beast of a mid 80's creation. I cant stop staring...I cant stop wondering how I missed this when I was 16 years old?
These were highly regarded for their handling and at times even better than Porsches back then but not being an established well known brand and quite niche it did not sell that highly.
Alpine recently released the new A110 after many years of hiatus, a homage to the old one and there's nothing but praise for it, mainly for it's driving dynamics and just for being different to the norm.
Jep, they stop to make them.
My Lotus Elan M100 has the same rear lights. Very hard to find replacements if you break them.
Cizeta v16 too
Julien Collet Yes! And the Lotus Esprit also 👍👌
been living in Dieppe where the factory sits from 1985 to 1988. We used to see them driving around town for testing... Loved it !
IF THEY EVER DO A BACK TO THE FUTURE 4, THEY NEED TO USE THIS CAR
No respect for the franchise
Love how Hoovie is using the British terminology :) "bonnet" and "boot",
ckyliu : That’s “bonnay” and “burt” en Francais.
Because Hoovie is an esteemed gentleman of wealth and taste.
Please don’t do that again unless it’s a British car! Annoying
@@jetlife2 It's European, so I feel the use of British English is justifiable, I mean they can see France from their coastline. I rekon he's picked it up from Clarkson/Top Gear.
@@777jones lolol
I was lucky as my parents bought one when I was a kid ( tye V6 Turbo version ). This thing was phenomenal. It could race a 911 on the highway without issue, was pretty original to look at, and I don't remember it having once any reliability issue. The only pain was the price of the tyres.
Who else during the sponsor was watching Hoovies dog
Hoovies' Hoover.
Frank haha
This thing looks like a French Mitsubishi Starion
Exactly what I was going to say. With a little Tbird thrown in
It is very similarly styled to an Rx-7 or 300ZX. But very interesting! Well done Tyler!
You keep calling him "Daddy Doug" but he's younger than you, he just looks old lol.
"Daddy Doug" is for the amount of subscribers
Plus Doug acts older.. More serious. Like a dad.
Shitttt I think hoovie looks way more daddy than Doug more like daddy Tyler

funny, the owner of this car is BOB lol
Cheaper for Hoovie that way. Plus: extra hot Renault content.
Dude that deep synth wave music that you used for the intro on this Renault was spot on!
I help run a garage in the uk that restores this Alpine’s and other French cars
You need to try A610 turbo alpine
now those are quick, they can hit 160mph and handle beautifully.
RUclips getting real comfortable with the double ads.
At the start of the video Fast forward to the end of video. Then hit replay. No ads. Thank me later

God, forgot about the Venturi, what an amazing looking car, still looks good even today. Thanks for the link.
Does anyone else hear him saying “VPM”?
Yeah, I hear it too... I thought I was crAZY
The 80s May have been bad for American and Euro czars, but not for Japanese ones. Japanese had some of the best cars of the 1980s
I know a few Czars that did well
Agreed, it was the beginning of the golden era of Japanese cars.
Samuel Orellana autocorrect got me good
Those windshield wipers...that gas tank location and mystery cap...wow! That's a really unique car. Thanks for show us. :)

*WIZZARD:* looks at wartortle....
Love the E.T seats
Man, I have a book from my childhood that reviews this car .... but have never seen one in person .... you are metal bro! Respect
The 80's had some of the best cars though! Lots of good future classics that you can actually use, like the Jaguar XJS. V12 GT at it's finest
Dafuq are you talking about? The XJS was a massive pile of crap, known for breaking down all the time..
Orcawhale their electrics are horrendous, but the rest of the car is actually pretty good if you treat it like any other classic British car.
So, Renault built a Saturn before GM did, interesting.
Actually GM built basically a Saturn before Saturn was a company. The Pontiac Fiero. Mid engine and made out of plastic and fiberglass body panels on a space frame
@@mmercante0257 Quite right, I sit (at my PC keyboard) corrected. Maybe we can use an Alpine to make a Ferrari kit car?
@@AndrewKarpyszyn Why? The Alpine is more reliable and collectable (specially the turbo version).
@@fredpinczuk7352 I absolutely agree with you, Fred.
Spluffles so is a corvette a Saturn too? its in no way near a Saturn. its mostly fiberglass and not cheaply made. Saturn was made to be as cheap as you can make it with the best fuel economy. Nothing of that fits the Pontiac Fiero trust me I own one and its the funnest vehicle Ive ever owned and ive owned plenty.
A car ahead of its time. Those lines...so fantastic.
If he likes that car he needs to get his hands on a last of the line alpine A610 or a Venturi. Genuine lotus killers from France.
Venturi 400GT-The French F40

There's even a brand new one since 2018! Very nice car
I remember quite a few of them here in Belgium. But it's been ages that I saw one.
You should be ashamed of yourself
I've only ever seen it in magazines but all I wanted was to one day see one in the flesh. Unfortunately I've still to see an Alpine in the flesh.
Ron Heuvel yeah I know that one exists. James May owns one.
My friend has a late yellow A610 (with the pop up headlights) and it’s absolutely stunning, so quirky and appealing. Great review

you should look for a Venturi too, try the Atlantique or the "400" ... ;-)
The turn-signals-handle is from a lot of 80s' models from Renault. Or how to save money with all your car models ;)
Tyler... I have watched you from YVR (Vancouver BC) since your first video and it just dawned on me today that your voice and cadence is becoming more like Jeff Goldblum every day (that's a compliment because despite of his own quirks and features, he's compelling to listen to!). Keep it going!
Fantastic cars! Then again I would say that, I’ve owned 5 of these beauties 😂
I remember when Clarkson crashed one of these into a barrier that sent it airborne in his Supercar Showdown DVD.
That was a newer A610. He got a lot of shit for that btw. While it wasn't very expensive it was a carpeted garage kept collectors car. Pretty shit thing to do regardless of what car you do it to.
