    A semi-permanent solution to the drive way gravel migration is to pull the gravel back more than 1/2 way into the drive, bring in clay or clay-gravel fill, grade it to "level" out the driveway and re-spread the gravel. A crusher-run grade of "stone" would also work better than graded 57 because the crusher-run has several sizes and stone powder to "bond" the stone together instead of roll around & spread out with slight pressure. Been there & done that! Good luck.

    Railroad ties along the side of the drive would help keep your rock in place

  • @terryhunt2659
    @terryhunt2659 2 месяца назад

    Nathan, if you just build up the side of your drive with earth, rain and wind will eventually disperse it. Do it, but sow it with grass seed, so that the grass roots will consolidate it. Might cost a bit, but should become a permanent solution.

  • @Barnagh1
    @Barnagh1 2 месяца назад

    If you could run over your driveway lightly with a vibrating roller it would turn up a flat face on each chip, and lock them into each other to some extent so they would be less inclined to drift downhill. You could also spread a light coat of 3/16” chips, which would get into the voids between the 3/4” rocks (as you call them 😅) and the 3/16”s would help bind the surface.

  • @paularriola3572
    @paularriola3572 2 месяца назад

    Maybe lay down a few lengths of railroad tie along the low side of the road? Seems like a relatively low budget, high impact solution.

    Now that you have that Excavator it would be cool to dig in a small retaining curb along the low side, maybe with 8x8 cants or cement or large rocks

  • @michaelcallahan1224
    @michaelcallahan1224 2 месяца назад

    The cheapest way I think to fix your low side gravel from moving down hill is to place irregular shaped riprap along that side. The riprap will hold the gravel and water will still drain through it. Delivery trucks won't want to drive their tires on the riprap either and will keep their tires on the gravel.

    That was one square piece of advise Nathan. I had a gravel parking area and used crushed river rock after digging out a foot of what was nothing but mud during mud season up here. Before I did that the mud could come up to the running boards on what ever vehicle was pulling into the yard never mind trying to get out of the vehicle and slog to the front steps of the house. It was awful. But like you there was a small grade that fell off to one side and so much of the gravel would flow down I was donating my river rock to my neighbor's camp driveway every year. Sure could have benefited from that machine of yours!

    Why not use some of your burn pile lumber, cut to 4 X 4 or 6 X 6 timbers, to line the low side to help hold the gravel in place. Then, if you want to put dirt over there, you can put the dirt up against the grass side of the ytimber so the grass will grow into it and help stabilize it.

    Just a thought, what if you attached your leaf blower to the saw mill, pointing it to the blade so the saw dust was blown away as it cuts. It would save you a trip to do that after each slab. You could also attach a 2nd one to the other side.

  • @CraigGrant-sh3in
    @CraigGrant-sh3in 2 месяца назад +2

    LOL. When you started pulling the rock back I was thinking he should bring in some dirt and bank it up along the drive way and taper it into the lawn. Then when you were done you said exactly that

    You need to mix some stone dust in with all that rock. That would pack it down and after some rain it would harden up just like cement.

    this is why u dont use loose rock on driveways u need rock with fines in it to lock everything in place. get rid of all that loose stuff and get u some ca6 at least thats what they call it in my area basically its 3\4 inch rock with fines in it. and yes u have the right idea of putting dirt along that edge that will help support that edge to keep it from shoving on you hope this helps. really interested in seeing how the katos do i never see them in my area and looks like they dont have any dealer support around here unfortunatly.

    Hey Nathan. I heard you talking about not liking to cut and dry mantles. Well these days so many fireplaces are done with framework and double pipe flues that building a mantle out of dimensional lumber is pretty easy., even if you veneer it with some sort of stone or brick. Build a pocket style with legs built into the framework, put the veneer on and then slide the mantle on the legs, countersink some screws and cover with plugs or putty, then finish. I like your grade-all bucket for the mini-X too.

    7:23 Would it be possible to just track backwards down the drive at a slight offset and pull the rock back onto the drive? (i.e. like a grader) That way it’d be done in a fraction of the time and I’d think it would be possible with that bucket.

    Is there an update available on your progress on the recently purchased ground.

    Had you considered edging the low side of your drive with red cedar or black locust low quality or dunnage logs or even staked slabs ?
