Scotch It! You scotch gods.
I find It interesting to return to this type of ‘entry level’ scotch and discover an appreciation that wasn’t so evident at the beginning of my whisky journey. The scotch that I really enjoy is the Glenmorangie 10 year. To me, there seems to be so much more complexity now than I remember.
very much agreed Frank and why we decided to go back and look at some of these. The Glenmo 10 is on our list
Nice one Frank. Totally agree.
You prolly dont care at all but does anyone know a method to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was dumb forgot the password. I would love any help you can offer me!
@Jad Luciano instablaster =)
@Luis Phoenix Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im in the hacking process atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
The Glenlivet 12yo was my introduction to SSMW. I was living in Beijing, and I had watched the first episode of Foyle's War. Christopher Foyle just learned his son joined the RAF (WWII) and he brought out his last bottle of Glenlivet. Maybe a day or two later I went shopping at a nearby Carrefour, and went down the aisle and saw the 12yo Glenlivet on the shelf. I was a 'victim' of product placement, and I don't regret it. I must admit, I prefer to the older label.
The dominating fruits, I used to get were pair and red apple.
very nice, thanks Andrew!
This is the whisky that started it all for me. I can even remember the moment. I was fishing of the coast of the Florida Everglades when it just clicked in my head that this stuff was damn good. Now I'm a whisky snob that won't buy anything chill filtered. Cheers fellas🥃🦈
thanks Barleyman, go back once in awhile and see if your palate has changed or if its as good as you remember.
LOVE this series ... so, so happy y'all are going back to the basics. There isn't a thing wrong with this whisky for what it is. Cheers!
thanks Robert!
Guys, I'll be honest, I never not enjoyed your reviews BUT BUT I had some, let me say suspicions, about how much trust I can put in your stuff. I gotta say, I was definitely prejudiced a bit. Dude, you guys are in my core whiskeytubers. SUBSCRIBED. THANK YOU.
I drank a lot of these in the early going before exploding into so many whiskies. Coming back to this, I have rediscovered how much I enjoy this. It's simple. just a VANILLA explosion but it's super competent and very tasty vanilla dram.
A little love from the Bay Area, California.
Thank you trainsar. Keep TESTING ITTTT!!!!
I believe this was the second single malt Scotch I tried. I always keep a bottle around and go back to it for a taste every few months. It’s $30 here so why not? Even though I have moved on in my Scotch journey I always find this one never disappoints. Thanks for the new series B2B I am going to love it
thanks XepuhS!
I still curious if Glenlivet 12 vs Glenddich 12 which one you prefer most?
Probably lean Livet, but it can depend on the day
Going back and watching some back catalog videos. This is just good scotch that I will order at a bar in a flat second.
Right on!
I've used this one as my "daily" scotch dram. I got a killer deal and bought 5 of them and 1 14y. It came with a huge rebate if I bought 6! I think the 12yr came out to around $24 each or something like that. It also acted as nice base to compare against more expensive bottles for the past year or so.
that was a killer deal!
I went straight in at the high end peat and sherry and just started trying some of these. Good timing for this series.
awesome, thanks Martin!
I'm so glad you guys decided to do that again!!!!, Back to the Basics ist great idea 💡
It's good to remind ourselves how did we started,
Thank you Scott and Bart
Keep doing what you doing, I really enjoy watching your reviews 👍
Yes! Thank you!
Cheers guys! Once again enjoyed sipping on the same dram along with you.
Thanks again!
I started my Whiskey journey 7 months ago with this, it was definitely a good starter whiskey 👍👍. Just received my hat and coin guys, thanks for the stickers and the note was a nice touch. We'll pleased 👍👍🥃🥃😊
thank you Neil!
Killed a bottle of this with a few buddies last week, had a great time. Really enjoyed it, I’ll be keeping a bottle around.
easy to kill!
i ordered it today, tomorrowthis will be my first ever scotch.. cant wait !!!
very nice, thanks Jack
Great series to do and something i have just recently started to go. Great to go back and see you you or the bottle may gave changed or your opinion of it.
exactly, so far we haven't been disappointed.
Great idea for a series. Just noticed the new packaging. This one and/or Glenfiddich 12 seem to be bar/restaurant staples around here. Nothing to turn your nose against for sure. I’d order this again if we ever get back out in public.
Scott agrees!
I am a beginner and find these very helpful. Bought my 1st Ardbeg (Uigeadail) and was totally shocked by the smoke smell. Takes some getting used to. Keep it up fellas. Your fan, Bacon
thanks Baconx4!
This was my first single malt ( many moons ago) and I always have a bottle at home. Find its good to go back to a basic ( which is well made) malt every now and then, kind of resets the pallet a little. Good review, well explained 👍cheers. While it was my first single malt ive still got a soft spot for glenlivet 12. I agree about the older packaging it looked better.
Totally agree! thanks David!
It's $27 at store near me...going to pick up a bottle for an easy drinker! Thanks, guys!
Ya man, for a single malt I’d scoop that up all day long! Great find
Great price
This might a dumb question, but what's the purpose of the coins ? What's the significance of the numbers? I noticed you always mention them too... I must have missed a video on that regards.. Cheers !
we sell the coins on our website, so if coins are available that were used in a show, you'll get one and I'll note it on the receipt!
This was my intro to scotch. I generally keep a bottle around for people that are just getting started on whisky. Especially since I can get it for 27.99 at Costco.
Good to see it back following Glenlivet's crap venture into it's NAS replacement.
great price!
one we never reviewed!
I love the idea about back to basics and I think we mentioned this a little while back. My epiphany back to basics was Glenfiddich 12 which I returned to after 30 years because it was the only single malt in my mum's Welsh village when I was stranded after a car failure. I thought I'd outgrown it but it's a lovely dram. The important factor is that these whiskys stay at a good price. Unfortunately I'm seeing the price creep up. I've been mentioning in some vlogs that I feel I've come full circle with whisky. You start with the basics and go higher and higher but I'm at a stage now where I can appreciate my early experiences far more today with a better palate. I also appreciate the price/quality ratio far more now. In a age of NAS and £80 (3 year) start up whiskys it's good to have a solid 10 or 12 year age statement. Coloured and chill filtered but they are global sale whiskys that have to take ice and appeal to all comers. Nevertheless, they have a minimum standard and are good for what they are but the price has to stay reasonable for me to maintain this attitude. Cheers guys. All the best. WT
great comment, thanks Welsh. we have a few more B2B's planned.
Hi Scott & Bart, really love your channel, I'm 51, 1st time I drank & got drunk at 16 drinking southern comfort & coke, yum fugen yum, still love it , but now an avid whisk(e)y drinker, but can't quit get the nuances that all you reviewers are getting, would really love more honing skills but don't know how to get them. Also How can I get your merch shipped to Australia. Thanks again for the great review's. I'm just sitt'n & sipp'n some Glenlivet 12 & I'm going to TEST IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers from OZ. Regards Helmut, Sydney
I still have a little bit left in a bottle. I bought it just to know what it was like in case it came up in a conversation. Like you need to know what Glenfiddich 12, or Glenmorangie 10, etc. taste like generally when you are involved in whiskey conversations. It's probably my favorite 40%er.
good call Michael
I liked the packaging and the colour as against u both, it's tasty
I'm almost certain the Glenlivet 12 and the Glenlivet 12 Double Oak are different expressions. I see them both on shelves., marked separately. Buchanan's 12 and Glenlivet 12 were my gateways!
That could be but not what our liquor store says. We'll have to check and see. It could be you're seeing the older packaging?
@@ScotchTestDummies Very possible. I'll have to check if theres a price difference when I see them.
From what I’ve understood, diluting whisky down to like 20% is more about finding fault with a whisky than increasing enjoyment. You should look for a Signatory Vintage “Number of the Beast” cask - Glenlivet at 66.6% ABV
We don't dilute down below 30% for enjoyment...more of an experiment. We tend to play with our whisky.
You should do some of the TW branded stuff. Like Glen Fohdry 12. NCF 47% ... When it's on sale it like $32. Can't remember where's it's sourced from, but from what I remember it was a big one.
There are a lot of great unknowns out there
I bought this whiskey it’s good I’m buying it again
thanks Leonel
Yeah great 👍🏻
thanks!
Been watching you guys for a while and I don't understand the significance of the coins? The number you mentioned?
we sell the coins on our website, so you could order one and get one used in show!
First single malt I ever drank. It was inoffensive but that was it.
Huh. We really dig it
$25 Bowmore 12 was my gateway Scotch. Dove into the deep end of the pool ✌️
Hmmm haven’t seen Bowmore in stores. Is it really that affordable?
doubt its that cheap anymore!
i would guess its running a little higher today, probably $35-40 range
@@SanskarWagley I failed to mention that that was probably 20 years ago 🤣
Bowmore is very widely available, that 12 yo sells for $40-50 now, and I can't honestly recommend it these days with much better bottlings from Ardbeg & Ledaig selling for about the same price. I'd also recommend steering clear of Bowmore's cheap NAS, it might be called Small Batch or something? It sells for under $30 and really isn't very good IMO.
@@ScotchTestDummies More like $40-50.
12yo is always a respectable age, this is a good example of the Speyside style & a daily starter dram - maybe any changes from a previous bottle several years ago may reflect the large increase in Glenlivet's output
PS What's a half-gallon? 😉
haha we don't measure in Soccer Field lengths either!
I just bought this for my cousin. He's never had scotch. What's the best beginner whiskey. Around 50 dollars or 100 dollars or less.
this one would be in consideration and Glenfiddich 12 year, Macallan 12 too.
Just getting into whiskey “without Coke” and picked up a bottle of this for $52. Figured it would be a good entry into Scotch
very nice, yes this is a good bottle to start with
Where do you live that it costs $52?
Mississippi
How do I get past the burning I really want to get into whiskey but i cant taste the notes or anything on the nose all i get is burning like people say makers mark is good but all i get is burning please help lol
whiskey burns because of the alcohol content and your palate isn't used to it. Add a little water to it and see if that helps. Then add more water if you need to until it doesn't burn. A lot of tasters will actually bring whiskey down to 20% roughly for notes.
@@ScotchTestDummies will I ever get use to the burn?
@@nonphotogenicful yes and its magnificent! as we progress we want higher abv and more burn!
@@ScotchTestDummies so just brace myself and grind through it until it becomes bare able
@@nonphotogenicful even when I started (Scott) i had about 25% whiskey and 75% ice/water. Over time I realized i didn't need that much ice/water and just slowly started reducing it. Sitting here now drinking a 43% neat and really enjoying it. My wife used to hate whisky now drinks it all neat. So i think there is a phase we go through where our palates adjust. Now at the same time there are a certain % of people who may never get used to it, but you don't know until you try. Also make sure you're using decent whisky and not cheap bottom shelf stuff!
I don't know if this applies to every walgreens but the local walgreens had a 20 dollar discount on the Glenlivet 12 if you had the walgreens card bringing the price down to 35 dollars. Not bad for a 12 yr scotch.
35 is a good price, 55 would be a no go
@@ScotchTestDummies I think they may have marked it up by 15$ so they could reduce the price by 20$ and get dummies like me.
I happen to have a bOttle of this expression wAiting in the wings... Going back tO basics is a grEat idea!
exActLy!
Glenlivet 12 is around $26 at Costco in California
thats a great price
I just got The Glenlivet 12 for the first time, cuz ppl rave about it. But, to be truthful when I drank some I was underwhelmed with it. I found it to be very "flat".
Also at my store it is closer to 60$
you must not be a beginner. At 12 years and 40% it is a little lighter. you probably like the stronger stuff
Last time I bought this it was $26.95, about 4 years ago. I can't see spending $40... I can get Loch Lomand 12, Glendronach 12, Laphroaig 10 and lots of solid bourbons for that price. I prefer Glenmorangie 10, which I can get for $28.95, anyway. I get the "Back to Basics" theme but... how about back to Peat... or back to Speyside, back to Cask Strength...??? Cheers Dummies!
thanks puremustard, we know you want the cask strength peat
I still wonder why the ABV is a singular criteria of whether a whisky is good or not. Many times higher ABV takes away flavor or it makes many people use some water. Not sure why they are surprised that it has a good taste because it’s 40 ABV. Puzzling?
thats why we're doing this series, too many people discard these entry bottles.
You should add a bit of nadurra to enhance flavor. Still single malt
good call!
They make marzipan in Kansas!?!?!? ;-) Back to BASICS!
we churn it by hand!
This is one I haven't had. There is just so much to choose from and I just got into whiskey less than 2 years ago. Sounds like it may be nice, but for $10 more I'll stick with Ardbeg. Cheers, you dummy senpais.
Bart would agree with you on the Ardbeg!
Scott likes them less bright😂
haha!
B2B wise Jack Black rules
had some Jack last night. its underrated.
