- I've been listening to this song since I was 15, about time I finally played it!
I was in a progressive music discovery phase while in high school and Tool was one of the bands that I spotted in my local library. I took home an album called Lateralus and was instantly captivated by all the weird stuff going on. Now I finally had the time and energy to learn these iconic bass riffs and dial in the right tones for the material. Enjoy!

Every bass enthusiast has a top 5 bass songs and this is easily in my top 2.
Alright, this was the most badass thing ive seen this week! I seriously had no idea that middle section was a bass ( always thought it was a synth) but you did that too and it was effortlessly flawless
Yeah I thought the same thing. It's incredible how many times I've found out that some part or sound was actually done on bass.
Thank you! Tool does a lot of those weird sounds on the bass. You can usually spot these by listening if the bassline disappears during such a part :)

Thank you, but these are just the stock Aria Pro II pickups from the 80s 😅 Maybe a set of SD Quarter Pounders or Vintages will get you similar tones 🙏

New bassist here, how to you manage to execute the hammer-on in the main riff? Whenever I do it, its always too slow and sounds so off beat.
Nothing special there, just practice the timing until you feel it's solid! Hammer-ons are always a bit more tricky to time for me since I rely so much on my right hand for time, but once you practice and start feeling the groove, those shouldn't be too hard either.
What is it from that point on 04:02 ? Is it with the pickup?
I'm tapping the notes with my left hand and fading them in and out using the volume control with my right hand.

Thanks! The pickups are the original Aria pickups, pretty high output but otherwise nothing special :)
