Long before GM pulled the plug on the Holden brand here, in Australia [sobs], we lost access to the Euro-built Astra, and we’re the poorer for it. Not perhaps at the pointy end of the quality stakes, but certainly a sturdy and reliable small car. This latest iteration appears to be a cracker.
Here in Brazil we also lost access to the Opel cars around the middle of the 2000 ( when GM was in financial trouble if I am not mistaken). Before that the Opel cars were really popular ( Vectra, Opel Omega, Zafira, Meriva and Corsa). One interesting fact: in the 2000 GM decided to import the aussie Holden Commodoro to replace the Opel Omega. It had quite a success here in Brazil as well.

I like the retro style combined with modern design. When the image of the Golf popped up as a comparison it made the Astra look very cool. Maybe we have to wait until the Golf 9 for a retro Golf, maybe based on the Golf 2?
Great review as always. Actually I daily drive a Golf 8 (very satisfied btw), but I must admit that I really like the exterior looks of the Opel. The interior concept is surprisingly similar, fresh and modern, but again, from what I have seen on the video, the ergonomics are maybe a little bit better in the Astra? I am less convinced by the digital instruments though, in my Golf I like the setup combining the classical look of the instruments with plenty additional information of my choice, here the customisation seems a little more limited. Finally there is an issue with the engines availability in the Astra, the gap between the small 130 petrol and the expensive hybrid 180 seems excessive to me, especially since my Golf is a 150 etsi mild hybrid and is proving itself as a wonderful compromise between impressive performance for this power range and great fuel economy.
This time the Astra is a better car. It has better body proportions, a more thoughtful interior that is more functional. The Opel infotainment system is also better, because the one in VW has problems with smooth and stable operation.
Reallly good news that there is a fully electric Astra kombi (estate) coming. I think it will sell well. Personally I would never buy any other body type. A small kombi is perfect for me.
The only complain is two screens stucked in the dashboard, but at least it still retain the physical buttons. Otherwise the styling looks much better than golf
Wow, i really enjoyed this in depth review! Also, so nice to hear that the host/reviewer picked this Astra over the VW Golf as im a huge Astra fan. I own an Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC and this new Astra really appeals to me!
You may emphasize the German roots of Opel, but the company is owned by Stellantis now and the new 308 isn't just a sibling - to me it seems to be the mothership... I like the new design though.
Great review, I think it looks great, you know growing up in the 80s Opel was always a quality car compared to the rusty Toyota and Fiats, The Rekord, cadet, asconca etc. great to see them competing again.
That was a great review Thomas. Well done. Although being a former opel fun, I drive a Renault these days, I have to say that Astra is supossed to be a roomy family car. And it was until now. In my opinion almost in every psa hatchback car, back seats are not spacious and neither the trunk is. Maybe there is an improvement on the set up but not in the space inside as well.
Great review video! The glass PurePanelPro looks like the one to get. The base trim looks too cheap-looking. I hope they reinforce the headrests by the time it arrives. Any comment on the rear legroom in comparison with the previous generation Astra? I thought the new Astra has a slightly longer wheelbase, which suggests the rear legroom should improve, even if by a negligible amount. Also, how would you say is the ride quality in normal city driving when comparing with a more premium model such as the BMW 1 Series hatch which has the multi-link rear suspension?
My takes: - Thomas came built with facial harmonization as standard lol (brazilians will get this) - designwise I think this new Astra looks better than the Golf - that manual shift looks smooth as butter - the back lights are so "Golfesque" - I see Peugeot/Citroen at the door knob, key and the turning/wiper knobs... - I feel like both Golf and Astra have downgraded the quality of the interior. Maybe it is just my perception, but this boxy black shape is not that attractive. - a huge thumbs up for keeping the manual temperature control instead of that touch control gibberish in the current VWse - that black piano surrounding the dashboard will get so many fingerprints... - the secret chamber looks cheap as f... - they should have put one USB-C and one USB-A outlet
Really like your blogs as I live in the UK you convert it all into inches etc and Vauxhall instead off opel that for me makes Your blogs fantastic and very informative .
Golf 7.5 highline driver here. I agree Thomas. no matter how hard I try to like the new 8 I don't like it 1 bit or I would have to look at a very very expensive/overpriced GTI or R. If something happened to my car I don't think I will go for the current MK8. A strange question maybe, but why do they never cover up the body colour on the inside of the doorframe which you see if you are in the interior? You know next to the B pilar of the car. Why don't they make it black or try to match it with the rest of the parts?
Thomas why didn't you test the rear passenger space of the Sport Tourer? Theoretically it has almost 6cm longer wheelbase than the hatchback. So it is possible those extra points will go for the rear passenger comfort but the new 308 sw gave all the extra wheelbase for boot space. Can you tell us what Opel did in the same situation?...
The summary is that there is not a single such serious error that you can not accept it and live with it. There are 9 details that are less good but none of these are absolutely crucial and it is compensated by lots of good things and technology. Golf, however, has two such serious flaws, very poor space for the feet in the front seat and useless instrumentation and controls, then there are other bad ones as well, but they are more emotion and impression. All the negative comments come from people who know nothing at all about this car and only guess based on a first - uninterested - impression - that is not much to come up with...
I am not feeling the newest Astra. I feel it was mistake for Opel to join PSA group in with the french. For me personally the best generation so far with Opel Astra is Astra J that was made from 2009 to 2015. The most awesome and gorgerous looking one is still Opel Astra OPC from said generation and it looks more beautiful and sleeker than current gen...
As always a solid review by Autogefuel! :) Petrol and diesel prices in Norway is of the charts and will only get even more expensive... Therefor I would wait for the all electric version. Just a pity it comes out next year, and not i 2022. Hopefully Autogefuel will do a review of this as well, and give some more info of the dynamics of the wagon all electric as well. Cheers :)
It’s a shame, cars like this would be nice with the current gas prices here in the states, all we have are big gas guzzling trucks and SUVs. I’m definitely grateful I drive a compact car rn.
Glad to see a review with the manual gearbox, I get automatics are easier to drive, I just prefer to have full control of the car. Awesome review, I have the sports tourer on order and must say I am already in love with the car.

Good review guys. It's funny that phev cars are more and more popular, more efficient on fuel (on paper at least), .more powerful... but, even the new Cupra Formentor 245hp phev doesn't give you a feeling of fun or speed. Just doesn't. Looks this astra is the same and probably all other phevs as well.
Base interior looks ugly, but the "premium" one isn't much better. Piano black ruins it. And there's the question of engines. 1.2 Puretech has really bad reputation for reliability, basically due to timing belt being faulty and also weak metallurgy (cracking heads or cylinders). Maybe the new reworked version with timing chain will remedy some of that.
Opel has done a great job with the new Astra. The exterior looks way better than previous generations. Would be better if the cockpit was all one screen like the new Mercedes. Don't like the plastic in between dividing the screens. Should have a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine. Great review by the way.
Excellent review, shame anyone had any say on the design except Opel. The exterior is debatable, but the interior is horrendous for Astra or Opel standards. That stick shift base, nightmare material...
modern looking but also to much history, alloy wheels like old opel kadett or senator, front grill like opel manta, c pillar grill like opel kadett.... very good
Thank you Thomas. A great thorough review. I've got a 2016 Astra Sports Tourer 1.6 Diesel- better than my previous Insignia which I loved. I love the blistered rear wheel arch- looked retro Quattro/Integrale to me. Definitely on my next car list. 😊
Great video as always! Did i undestand correctly, that teh fuel consumption was 5.5 liter? Whats your thought about a full city drive consumption? Thx.
The emblem which opens The trunk / boot is invented by Opel - not VW... Opel has had four different variants for opening the trunk connected to the emblem, Omega 1994 where Opel invents the whole idea for the first time, Astra 2010, Corsa 2014, Insigna 2017 and now Astra again in the fifth variant, Opel was before VW with the emblem in the middle on the trunk and that a lift in or press on the emblem opens. VW makes its own version in Golf 2004, 10 years after Omega, or shown first in Volkswagen D Concept 1999, but it is obvious that it is Opel that invents the solution and not VW that just copies it, the variant that sits on the Astra is more from the Insignia 2017 and differs from how it looks on the Golf. The black triangle behind the back door is not from Kadett but from Rekord 1978, if you look at the design and compare, the difference is clear. The material in the gray cover is compensated by the fact that real aluminum is used in large quantities, it should be noted - And by the way... I think the gray color breaks very nicely against the shiny black. The blind spot warning is radar based in the Intelli-Drive 1.0 available in Astra Elegance at the low price of 550 € which detects cars at a distance of 65 meters, that technology is taken from Insignia. And in other films where the distance is visible to the car behind, I experience in any case that the distance is one or ? two car lengths behind, while the old PSA technology lit the warning first at the same level as the bumper, it may be a wrong... experience, but it looks like that.
@@autogefuehl Yes they say that, but that's just because everyone else has said it and the marketing does not want to say against this opinion so as not to become unpopular... people do not like to hear that they are wrong... so Opel is fully aware of the lie caused by PR reasons. For some reason they want to connect it with Kadett but not with Rekord. But the design is Rekord and not even Opel can change that... no matter what they say...
Haha I love the indicator sounds… if memory serves me right (and I may absolutely be wrong) …but that indicator brings back memories of the 1990’ Opel kaddet 200is I drove all those years ago….
Comprehensive review nicely done. Personally I find the design, especially the exterior to be rather unappealing aesthetically. Astra has been all over the show with its design language for many generations, with no resemblance or evolution to carry its customers over to the next generation, and it's the reason I predict poor sales with this iteration as well.
Actually on my end I think it’s the very first Astra that I’m interested in. The design is way more appealing than previous generations. They may lose some former Astra clients but gain many new ones.
Hello Thomas I like the review and almost certain i will get one. Just one thing how tall are you. just for refrence for passengers as i do like the car there doesn't seem to be a lot of space in the back many thanks.
Top review!! You guys always fix my mood with your vids!! I would also really like to hear your opinion in regards to the sibling (308) since they are pretty much the "same" car... I saw that video as well with the comparison with the Leon and if I am not mistaken both of you preferred the 308. But, between Astra and 308, what major differences (pros and cons) did you spot and what would be your pick and why? Thanks a lot in advance!! Keep up the amazing work!!

Electric cars is "bad news" you half-wit!
The only complain is two screens stucked in the dashboard, but at least it still retain the physical buttons.
Otherwise the styling looks much better than golf
We had a Kadett for 20 years!!
Great car!!
The amount of detail in these videos is insane.
Welcome 🙏
Wow, i really enjoyed this in depth review! Also, so nice to hear that the host/reviewer picked this Astra over the VW Golf as im a huge Astra fan. I own an Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC and this new Astra really appeals to me!
Like this a lot more than the Golf.
You may emphasize the German roots of Opel, but the company is owned by Stellantis now and the new 308 isn't just a sibling - to me it seems to be the mothership... I like the new design though.
We´ll see how it is during a test drive, but as for design .. wowza !! Opel/PSA did a fantastic job, it looks great from all the angles.
Maybe there is an improvement on the set up but not in the space inside as well.
daaamn this looks nice... wish we had this in the US.... 😭
I can’t explain, it’s looks like nice car, but there are brands when you say “It’s not for me”. And this is that case.
This hits my opinion 100%. Head says, yes everything is fine, but stomach says "please not..."
My takes:
- Thomas came built with facial harmonization as standard lol (brazilians will get this)
- designwise I think this new Astra looks better than the Golf
- that manual shift looks smooth as butter
- the back lights are so "Golfesque"
- I see Peugeot/Citroen at the door knob, key and the turning/wiper knobs...
- I feel like both Golf and Astra have downgraded the quality of the interior. Maybe it is just my perception, but this boxy black shape is not that attractive.
- a huge thumbs up for keeping the manual temperature control instead of that touch control gibberish in the current VWse
- that black piano surrounding the dashboard will get so many fingerprints...
- the secret chamber looks cheap as f...
- they should have put one USB-C and one USB-A outlet
I can’t lie the design looks very good inside and out. Definitely prefer it to the golf, and I like the interior buttons
Great work great car..greetings from 🇬🇷
Kudos!
It looks awesome. Good job Opel!
My first car was a Opel Ascon 2,0T GTline, Thx for nice vid on Opel newest car :)
Really like your blogs as I live in the UK you convert it all into inches etc and Vauxhall instead off opel that for me makes
Your blogs fantastic and very informative .
Look up the definition of a blog you might be surprised with what you find
Great to see you in Portugal. Great review as usual
Why don't they make it black or try to match it with the rest of the parts?
i love the looks of the gs-line I'm mean looks good and this is lit hopefully it will have a gsi model find on the insignia gsi
Excellent review as usual Tomas! Are you guys going to be reviewing the new Renault megane e-tech electric anytime soon?
Cheers! At least got this: ruclips.net/video/cdcdRE-uLms/видео.html
The coloured roof comes from its grandparents from the 60s like the 1963 vauxhall Victor
Opel have not "joint the PSA group" PSA buy Opel and after that PSA and FCA have create STELLANTIS.
amen brother
@@a.folker5365 nonetheless Opel was much better off in times of GM than PSA … this new Opel Astra for me is unappealing and repulsive.
absolutely true new opel soulless
@@mlasrb absolutely true new opel soulless
As always a solid review by Autogefuel! :) Petrol and diesel prices in Norway is of the charts and will only get even more expensive... Therefor I would wait for the all electric version. Just a pity it comes out next year, and not i 2022. Hopefully Autogefuel will do a review of this as well, and give some more info of the dynamics of the wagon all electric as well. Cheers :)
For sure we will! 😎
I like it when Thomas is showing 10"
you should like it more when it is 2 times 10" !!!
I'm loving the engine sound! I wonder how reliable and durable it will be, but at least the sound is awesome.
Great review as always, but did you see the swirl marks on the paint on the red car, looks like they had washed it with sandpaper .
thanks! that might happen on events when they do very frequent micro fibre towel cleaning
Congratulations, amazing review, next month i want to buy the manual version! Thanks a lot👌
highly appreciated! Please recommend our channel :-)
@@autogefuehl no doubt! I do it!
Im not into opel but this car looks so badass
I agree, it looks great. And a bunch of people are calling it bad looking for some reason
I love that interior, it seems to be a potential solution for future VW products to save their current interior design layout in the golfs and ID's.
I would choose not the Astra , nor the Golf, but Seat all the way. Better price than the Golf and design , better quality and design than the Astra.
I think the same
Great review as always, very detailed 👍
Cheers!
Being looking forward for this review Thomas
enjoy !
Great review as always. Danke

Much nicer than the Golf 8
Greetings from Portugal 💪🏻👍🇵🇹
Obrigado!
@@autogefuehl Gern geschehen 😅
Looks way better than the golf and the 308
To me it seems that they are trying to slowly move opel a little bit more upmarket. And this car is the beginning.
Very nice voice quality and good narration
Good review guys. It's funny that phev cars are more and more popular, more efficient on fuel (on paper at least), .more powerful... but, even the new Cupra Formentor 245hp phev doesn't give you a feeling of fun or speed. Just doesn't. Looks this astra is the same and probably all other phevs as well.
*looks like this astra is the same story.
Agree
Can definitely tell it’s a 308 at heart..
Thanks again for a great review
I WANT ONE
I'm in love
Base interior looks ugly, but the "premium" one isn't much better. Piano black ruins it.
And there's the question of engines. 1.2 Puretech has really bad reputation for reliability, basically due to timing belt being faulty and also weak metallurgy (cracking heads or cylinders). Maybe the new reworked version with timing chain will remedy some of that.
the design is excellent inside and out, except for the manual gear shifter
The front looks like inspiration taken from dodge challenger. :)
Great review nice car, personally I dislike the new digital dash, I like old school dash!
Opel has done a great job with the new Astra. The exterior looks way better than previous generations. Would be better if the cockpit was all one screen like the new Mercedes. Don't like the plastic in between dividing the screens. Should have a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine. Great review by the way.
The dashboard with those screens reminds me of Knight Rider. As a kid, I was dreaming of cars like that. But now, I'm not so sure tbh :D
Just found your channel and WOW, this review is fantastic! Thank you, you have a new happy subscriber!
Welcome! And feel free to recommend 🙌
Excellent review, shame anyone had any say on the design except Opel. The exterior is debatable, but the interior is horrendous for Astra or Opel standards.
That stick shift base, nightmare material...
Der neue Astra hat einen Radar basierten Toten Winkel Warner nicht mehr den Alten aus dem Corsa der auf den Parksensoren hinten basierte.
Never underestimate the importance of ten inches. To have it twice! Oh my... the possibilities!
modern looking but also to much history, alloy wheels like old opel kadett or senator, front grill like opel manta, c pillar grill like opel kadett.... very good
Beautiful car!!
Great review 👍
Thank you Thomas. A great thorough review. I've got a 2016 Astra Sports Tourer 1.6 Diesel- better than my previous Insignia which I loved. I love the blistered rear wheel arch- looked retro Quattro/Integrale to me. Definitely on my next car list. 😊
Nice sharing 😀
Very interesting tips 👌
Thanks for that ✅
Be safe out there 🙏
Cheers
u too !
Great video as always! Did i undestand correctly, that teh fuel consumption was 5.5 liter? Whats your thought about a full city drive consumption? Thx.
Much improved from the previous version but personally I would choose the 308.
Thanks 🙏 didn’t know about the flipping logo. As for Kadett D, the opel designers claimed to have taken it from the Kadett
Even Korean electronics does the same: LG washing machine is playing melody after finishing the program xD
Thomas in a playful mood today, Mr "two times ten inch"
Hell yeah. Great review.
🙏🙏
better than golf in styling and as a package.
Much better looking than the Mk8 Golf 😉
4:30 My Peugeot 208 has the same sound when I forget to turn off the lights, love those quirky bleeps though
If German-built then deserves attention. What a crazy difference a river makes.
Haha I love the indicator sounds…
if memory serves me right (and I may absolutely be wrong) …but that indicator brings back memories of the 1990’ Opel kaddet 200is I drove all those years ago….
Hi... really enjoyed your review...I'm based in the uk... and i want an Opel not a vauxhall... how about that...as like the badge better .
Eey there, do you have any idea on when are you going to do the test drive with the new peugeot 308? Thx
11:15 VW needs to see this
Comprehensive review nicely done.
@@jeromelondon3609 It will definitely be interesting to see how the sales shape up!
Hello Thomas I like the review and almost certain i will get one. Just one thing how tall are you. just for refrence for passengers as i do like the car there doesn't seem to be a lot of space in the back many thanks.
Cheers! 189 6ft2
