Yes! This is a new and improved version of an older video. Enjoy! Edit: I said the wrong date. It's 1929, not 49. I think a few hundred more comments pointing out the mistake will definitely fix it!
I have to tell you that your narration has really changed in the last year. Your writing has become extremely interesting and poetic especially your closings. It makes all of these stories that much more captivating. Congratulations and here's hoping that your videos continue to grow in length because I think many of us prefer to listen to your take on things.
@@mycosys I’m sorry you think that, but you’re wrong. Italian names are not easy. I love how someone finds one thing to criticize just to make himself feel superior. All hail the pronunciation king! My original assessment stands.
Well, this one is certainly timely for obvious reasons. I would normally skip it. I've had a lifetime of WW2 Historical research. I'm watching anyway. I love your channel that much. Keep up the fantastic work! ✌🇨🇦🖖😁
Honestly, thats not high praise. The History Channel hasnt been doing real history for like 25 years by now. It would be more accurate to say, that hes doing better history than the History Channel, when the History Channel still did fact based history. Which he does!
Thank-you for the video. In 1937 my Grandmother took her then three children (my aunt and two uncles) to Italy and back aboard Rex. I very much enjoyed this glimpse into what their journey was like.
Seems very similar to the last one you made on the Rex. But no complaints from me, as always a great watch. It's arguably one of the best looking ocean liners in my opinion.
So good to see you back on the topic of the great liners. As I have said to you before I adore your liner content and Rex is a good topic even if this is a rework of an older video. I know you are very into the shipping history of the Great Lakes, a topic I have failed to engage with, but all your output is worth good watch.
Can't believe? Funny, considering that without Alessandro Volta you'd still be pushing your car instead of starting it. And yet, our Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati still leave the rest of the world in the dust ...Inaduceted 🇺🇸🤢🤮
That’s the ship that carried my mom and her family when they left Italy for the USA in 1938. She told me stories about the crossing, how everyone except the kids were seasick. They were Jewish and the first Italian anti Jewish laws were passed only a few weeks after they left. My grandfather saw the signs and acted. They moved back to Italy after the war. Now I’m in the process of getting a place myself in Italy.
don't forget to blame ALL the people who supported him and LOVED everything he said and did until it was too late. we always blame the one, but millions always let it happen.
@renasauceman How true your words ring to the Heart of my Family... growing up, I often heard of their escape from Mussolini's Fascists after my Grandfather spoke out against Mussolini... and yet today, I tremble and Pray that the United States doesn't fall prey to the empty promises of those that claim that only they have the ability to 'Restore America to Greatness'. ... just as Mussolini promised that he could deliver the Glory and Prestige of ancient Rome to Italy after the first World War.

Didn't the USA fly over the REX as she approached American waters to try to prove the idea of Billy Mitchell and the power of aircraft and sinking large ships?
War was not kind to ocean liners. Much beauty destroyed by blunt aggression, misuse, or blind incompetence. Lusitania, Brittanic, Lancastria, Rex, Normandie, Cap Arcona, Wilhelm Gustloff, and so many others.
Very well done presentation. Both of these liners were very beautiful & innovative. REX was a bit faster, but the Conte S, was a superior ship. Had they survived the war the “bugs” would have been worked out and I think the Count S was the better of the two. Just my opinion
Very good w/excellent footage and details, but some corrections needed, as follows. At 4:19: "contract signed in 1949"?? Surely 1929. 7:25: NOT powered by "turbo gearboxes" but by steam turbines. 8:22: Rex had a counter stern, not a 'clipper stern' (there's no such thing, though there is a clipper bow). Opening music very heavy-handed, Otherwise very good w/excellent footage and details.
Conte di Savoia was not slower than Rex. In fact, CdS performed better during her sea trials. CdS was also first given the opportunity to attempt break the transatlantic speed record.
In the video @ 12:33, docked at Pier 18 North River New York, looks like either the Str. ACADIA or SAINT JOHN of Eastern Steamship's New York - Boston over-night service. 💥
In the video @ 13:23, the large sidewheel steamboat to the right [west] of the NORMANDIE, looks like she might be the Hudson River Night Line's Str. BERKSHIRE. 💥
Maybe I am hearing things, but at about 4:17 you say the contract for Rex was signed in December 1949. Should that not be 1929? Mussolini was long dead by 1949.
Very interesting. Please don't apologise for trying to pronounce foreign names or words. I like the fact that you try as many others wouldn't. It is difficult. I think it gives an extra professionalism and authenticity when words are pronounced as they should be. I encourage you to keep going. Thanks.
I wonder if the perennial organized crime presence in Italian construction caused the electrical failures on the big ships or if it was simply lack of expertise.
The bombing and sinking of the Rex at the end of the war was truly unnecessary and a pure act of pettiness from the Brits. Definitionally a straight up war crime, but they knew that the winning side wouldn't be held accountable
I've always enjoyed this channel, but this story leaves a great deal to be desired. Of all the odd mistakes (and I'm not counting pronunciations): Italy wasn't "burned to the ground" by the war. That was Germany.

To be fair, that's not a very high bar.
Not untrue, either way.
It's quite interesting to see Big Old Boats remade both the SS Bremen and SS Rex videos.
well those videos are a few years ago now, so it would make sense to remake em so more new people can learn more abt them.

Another beautiful ocean liner, the Roma, was converted into a carrier, but she never entered service. It's another story that's worth telling.
Wonderful video!!! @ 19:17, docked at Pier 14 North River New York, is a Fall River Line steamer which just may be the PLYMOUTH. 💥

It is interesting, that no living dictator dares to name any ship after himself, thinking of the possible bad omen, if it would sink.
I’m hoping for a Conte di Savoia video one day, she’s so underrated 🙏
I like her more modern Art Deco interior better than Rex neo classicist and baroque style.
I'll second that.
She was a beauty.
It's so sad how the most beautiful of all liners- Normandie, Conte di Savoia, Awatea, Bremen- didn't survive WWII.

I watch most of your videos twice. When I have insomnia, they help me sleep, then a second time when I can actually watch and enjoy!
4:15 1949? Did you mean to say December 2, 1929?
I was thinking the same thing. I had to replay that section several times to make sure that I had not misheared what he had said.
Well, obviously he meant 1929, but he was half asleep listening to himself. Apparently, he is still asleep two days later.
Well done as always sir!
Outstanding narration...... Sad that many are now using A.I. narration.
Great historical journalism, proffesional production and presentation. Thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. Felt much longer. Bravo!

The SS Rex was a masterpiece of naval engineering. No other ship like it.

Naming any vehicle "Rex" is just asking for it. May as well just call it "Crash and Burn". 😂
A bit harsh 🤗👍😂
When I first met my in-laws dog, I was convinced his name was spelled Wrecks
Excellent video. Lots of historical facts that I had never heard of before. You tell great stories!

Actually yes! I've seen photos of that flyover. Had completely forgotten.
GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS 😊😊😊😊
I found this very interesting. I didn't not know much about Italy's rise and fall in the world. This provided some great information. Thanks.
This is a great combo of major historical events and the role of ocean liners.
You said the contract was signed in 1949. How could Mussolini have done this in 1949? Was it done from the grave supernaturally? Just wondering.
Your video creations are remarkable

The Rex was gorgeous! 🥰 It's a shame that these vessels, part artwork and architecture, aren't around anymore. They were awesome. 🌹⚓
I so enjoy watching these. Please note in the first chapter you misquoted the date when the contract was signed.

Mussolini was dead in 1949 - the war was over. Do you mean 1929 or 1939?
Mm. Mussolini in '25. Who said history doesn't repeat...it just changes continents...
Did I hear correctly at 4:14-16 minute: "A contract was signed on December 2nd, 1949". Oups" Guess the year was 1929.
It’s crazy that the first Rex video is 3 yrs ago now, i feel so old now
THE Oedipus REX ! on one of it's "mother's day " cruises !
I still find I weird SS Rex was sunk approximately one decade to the date of the SS Moro Castle fire.
Dealing with our own Mussolini right now. Sorry.
Try dealing with this one the way the folks in Italy eventually dealt with the original...
