The people who are commenting negatively about a judge really need to smarten up. I have seen many of these Judge ____ shows and I believe this to be a fact: the judge is always right and those who try to argue with one in court deserve to lose their case.
Besides, the defendant in this case has a valid reason to be absent...he is fighting a war in the Middle East!

I can tell u what happened to the ceiling and why it has a hole in it: He was probably pissed and drunk and threw something heavy like a beercan or bottle OR he slammed a broomstick up there. U do not forget doing something like that, at all.He used his friend cuz he thought he could, just like most people. Its usually the ones u least expect it.
Most court shows, if not all, cover all costs of travel expenses and also the cost of the ruling. You also get paid an appearance fee...so most people come out on top, believe it or not. My dad got offered an appearance on Judge Judy for buying a property with a sink hole in FL...both parties must agree to show up though, but it was pretty cool to see the whole "contract" of what it entails.

The judge's poor judgement in the case has nothing to do with Affirmative Action. It seems that he attributed all the damage to the property to one person when four people occupied the residence. The landlord does have the responsibility of either keeping a property up to code or appointing someone to maintain the property. If that responsibility was to fall to the occupants, it should be stipulated in writing in the lease. The judge made a bad call on this one.
If you watch the video, they say Twice that it estimate is for full replacement.

Kid shouldn't have gone on this show otherwise he would've had an easy appeal. If CO states 3 people max and there were 4 people living in the Unit- himself being the 4th- that kid wouldve got his FULL amt of rent paid back to him. Landlord wouldve been fined. and house by the looks of it wouldve been slapped with severe code violations. Landlord wouldve lost everything. wrong courtroom. gotta love this bs though.

I wouldn't rent a place with an onsite manager. I own a house now,thankfully, but I did live in a place like that and it was a nightmare! Constantly being told to turn the music down, when it didn't bother the neighbors, they were constantly being harassed to.

Since it is TV, he actually doesnt have to pay anything, the show pays everything for him. So i did get paid, but this youtube post is his only punishment. In real court, its even dumber, as the person who loses can pretty much pay you when ever they feel like it.

As you can see from the look on my face at the end, at least judge joe brown paid the max. The show has a 5 grand ceiling, and he was like, you get it. I used that money to go on a trip to Australia and travel around the continent. Almost worth it.

That means he got free rent also and disrespected my house right in front of me at no cost to himself. Yes, I had to bend over backward to get it recorded and actually post it here. This is really his only penitence. He is really really extra lucky I didn't want to look like a crazy veteran just back from Iraq or I would have beat him to within inches of his life, nursed him back to health and then done it again.

natalieninetales1 I agree 100 % natalie ! I moved into a place that was basically a nearly condemned building, old and decrepit. I didn't complain. I was glad to get a roof over my head. I cleaned up my apartment area and made it a pleasant place to be, even if the building had seen better decades long ago. I had lots of plants and even a long vine that I strung around on my ceiling to cover its drabness. I grew vegetables and flowers in pots on the large porch. Since I was on the 3rd floor higher than any surrounding building for a long ways I could sit out there nekkid as a jaybird and tan during the summer, enjoy a beautiful lake view with plenty of warning of someone coming up the stairs. I ended up with my friends, who lived in far better apartments and homes, coming to my place to hang and visit because it was such a pleasant place to be. That was what they told me without me even asking why they liked hanging at my place. I didn't allow ANYBODY to act in a destructive manner in my home and never had a behavior problem like that with my friends even when drinking. They knew I wouldn't tolerate it and they liked being there. I even almost miss living there now. No excuses for losers if they choose to live in a shithole and do nothing to improve it. No matter where you live, you can make your home someplace you're proud of, and that makes you and others happy to be there. The same applies to neighborhoods and communities. People have to take PERSONAL responsibility for the places where they live, not wait on someone else to do THEIR chores or make their life nice. If that happens they'll never take care of it or respect it. You have your head on straight natalie. Good Luck to You !

They edit about 50% out to fit more cases on one show. In my opinion they did not even keep all of the real good stuff! The shows are also their own little world, as long as the law is concerned. People on the show sign something that says you drop your prior case you had in your own home town and will comply with pretty much what ever Judge Joe Brown decides. and FYI you don't know shit about other people personal situations, and the LIES people will tell anyone just to make it easy on THEM.

Even if he were presiding over a normal court, he probably still would have made the guy pay through the nose, since that's usually what happens when someone is declared in contempt of court, except the person would actually pay the court instead of the opposition. I don't think it's unprofessional at all; who else but a judge would have the authority to put people like that in their place?
Not sure, I would imagine that the playing up or acting would be on the choice of each person there. I believe that the Judges on "reality court" shows do crack more jokes and tend to sound a bit more harsh than a "regular court" for the sole purpose of entertainment. That is why the producers look at each case prior to putting them on the show....they pick entertaining cases that could cause the arrogance and foolishness that 8/10 cases show.
This decision will be over turned in a blink by any appeals court. unless substantial parts of the evidence was edited out of the video, there was no where nearly enough proof that the defendant caused all the damage. the landlord is also liable for willful violation of city ordinances, something that the court didnt even consider. its sad that he had no way of being present but he should have had someone look after arguably his most important asset - his house.

The defendant is correct when he said that wood paneling wouldn't be $600-4000 dollars. That quote was probably to finish the whole damn basement. The defendant should not have done the damages (or should have paid out for what he did) but the fact that the prosecutor is trying to get that amount of money is fucking nonsense.

Really, the whole point is public humiliation. Both parties are paid for their appearance, the show covers the winner's payments and loser gets a small fee in return for appearing on national television and allowing themselves to be shamed.
where do you live? I live in a rooming house, got a room has a stove, sink, fridge, good size room, have a closet, pantry, the rent;s 500.00 a month, landloard pays utilties. other places near me pay 600.00 and up for less.

He probably will never pay. Getting a judgment is the easy part. Collecting on someone who has no assets is the hard.
Well with TV shows, to get you on the show and look stupid, they offer to pay whatever the judge decides within 2 months. So they don't have to pay the judgement and the others get a guarantee to be paid.
