The Man Who Flew For Four Air Forces (And Scored Kills for Three) Part 2

- In the part two about an extraordinary pilot Saiful Azam, we will see what happened after he and other Jordanian pilots were sent to Iraq to keep fighting against Israel. Iraqis provided them with their Hawker Hunters and Azam would get a chance to show his fighter pilot skills during the third Israeli attack on the H-3 airbase in Western Iraq. Israeli Mirages and Vautours expected to put it out of action once for good but an Iraqi patrol led by Azam would interfere with their plans.

As a German my ace heroes are of course fellows like Hartmann, Richthofen and Marseille. But numbers don't always tell the whole story. From watching both these videos I get a strong feeling that Azam was one of the most skilled fighter pilots to take to the skies. He made the most of the scant opportunities he had and he defeated opponents of the highest calibre. Amazing fellow!
Jet fighter pilots never had a chance to shoot down as many opponents as WWII pilots did. Although I'm not a huge fan of 'what if' fantasy scenarios, it would be interesting to see some of these pilots swap roles and see how they would do in a different scenario.
You don t av to be a German in order to consider Hartman, Richthofen or Hans-Ulrich Rudel as heroes . . They are the heroes of the world and of every aviation enthusiast . . .
MXB2001 - Interestingly PAF not only got training from USAF but also from West German pilots some of them WW2 aces in the 1960s

Thank you for this feedback, I'm glad you liked the video. I knew that his first name meant 'sword' but I wasn't aware of the rest.
Proud that he was PAKISTAN AIR FORCE piolet and was trained by PAF.
Considering your interest in Indo-Pak & Soviet/Afghan vs PAF episodes I'd recommend you a wonderful source for further material and maybe making more content. "Flight of the Falcon" by Sajjad Haider _a high ranking PAF fighter pilot and leader of almost all major air raids in 65 war. The book is upheld in high regard on both sides of conflict as far as accounts of air wars go_ the thing that will interest you most. Fortunately for you the author is alive , 91 years old but active and open to candid discussion ( speaking of personal exchange with him). I'd strongly recommend you go through the source and I'd help happily if need be. Regards !

Interesting story .
True, not known well enough.
Both were great jets my country had both in Service. So there we go again...😉 Another WarThunder/DCS Showtime112 Video was greatly presented.👍 You can't beat Showtime112... His the best when it comes to creating such great historical WarThunder & DCS videos. The only thing that makes me curious both the Mirage IIIC (Shahak) and the Hawker Hunter had no external fuel tanks. Now before everybody shouts out! When they get into a dogfight they drop their external fuel tanks I know that but even before facing a dogfight they had no external fuel tanks fitted so the same goes for the Mirage IIIC (Shahak) called in Hebrew even the Mirage was not equipped with air-to-air missiles like Shafrir or Sidewinder. Brig-General Mordechai Hod , Commander of the Israeli Air Force during the 1967 Six-Day War, once said that the Israeli pilots shoot down more Arab pilots using their 30mm DEFA 552 Cannons than with Shafrir or Sidewinder. BTW: The Mirage IIIC was given the Hebrew name 'Shahak' (Skyblazer) due to its very inspirational Mach II performance and highly polished metal finish
Yet another detailed comment from you, thank you very much! The tanks were carried historically, in fact I think that Azam initially forgot to drop them when his flight spotted the Israeli formation approaching H-3. The reason I didn't mention this is that Hunter and Mirage III can't carry drop tanks in War Thunder. I think they only introduced them very recently and only with some of the latest jets. And yes, most Mirage victories were made with cannons as early missiles were quite unreliable.
These old birds are really something! 😁

Awesome story! Thanks
I appreciate your comment!
His story seems very similar to Anwar Hamid, or Harry Anwar as he was his name in the US. He was my friend and flew for the PAF, then the Jordanian Air Force. He was in charge of training their pilots and bringing them up to speed. He established an aerobatic team there with 16 jet fighters and King Hussein gave him a red Mustang convertible after one of his air shows. The Israelis/Ezer Weissman put a price tag on his head while he was in Jordan. Years later I got my Israeli sister in law to arrange a 10 minute meeting with Minister Ezer Weissman. This 10 minute meeting between these two former enemies lasted over an hour. They posed for a picture (which I unfortunately lost but I got an electronic copy form a Galena Illinois newspaper where Harry Anwar owned property) The Israeli Airforce museum was not very interested in this picture.

I wonder what Saiful Azam's thoughts were comparing his experience(s) flying and fighting with the Hunter & Sabre ? That man was a warrior !
I didn't find anything like that when I was researching him but I agree, it would be very interesting to hear his comparison between the two types.
I read an account of a South African pilot, Dick Lord, who was also an instructor at Top Gun on F4’s when he was in the British Navy Fleet Air Arm. He had the chance to fly both the Sabre and the Hunter. He said both were superb aircraft, but if he had to choose one in a dogfight against the other he would take the Hunter.

BTW, you should know that during the engagement over Jordan, one Israeli was seen heading back to Israel trailing in smoke. Israeli sources state that the same aircraft crashed and the pilot was killed so while it's an unconfirmed kill during the engagement, it's actually a confirmed kill by the opponent.
Thank you for the feedback! Yes, some sources say that the Mystere damaged by Azam eventually crashed too.

To obtain many kills against israeli pilots is a prowess, but under different flags is unreal, nevertheless this man did it, it's a fact.Like I said last time, Israel had many losses with their attack against military airport of the Arab league. It was not so easy for them. In the first hours of the strike, you have the benefit of the surprise after, and when you take the same route for attacking an other time the same target, we're waiting for you.
I seem to remember analysis by Shlomo Aloni in one of his books where he claimed that Israeli bomber losses in the 1973 War were not much higher than in 1967 War. But I suppose the effectiveness of the strikes in the earlier war must have been much higher.
@@showtime112
In 1973, the israeli aerial losses was due to AAA of the Arab league. All the material and the strategy of defense comes from USSR and it was very effective at the beginning of the conflict. So, the USA gave to Israeli HARM missiles adapted on their Phantom II that they have developed in Vietnam war with their Wild Weasel strategy. It was the opposite in fact, at the beginning of their strikes they have recorded the greater part of their big losses, not after because they have succeed to reduce the efficiency the defense dome of the AAA from Arab league helped technically by the russians.
In fact the arab league retained the lesson about the israeli preventive strike of 1967.
It was the same on the field.
I have read that he losses of the Israeli air force in 1967 was rougly 2/3 of their aviation but this operation was a success for them because they destroyed all the aerial capacity of their enemy. It was the objective.
The best pilots in 1967 in the Israeli air force were on MIRAGE III, so in your story this pilot realised a miracle for shooting a MIRAGE with his Hawker Hunter. It's because at this stage, no one missile worked properly, all the dogfight took place with cannons.

Being a fighter pilot much less an ace in Pakistan Air Force as a Bengali was something to be proud of because west Pakistan (present day Pakistan) viewed the people of east Pakistan ( bangladesh) as an inferior race with no qualities to be a good military personnel. Its is the pilot more than the plane. PAF polits have had good record of kills.
Pakistani pilots flying in Arab countries and on courses in the UK reported back that the Hunter was a very capable aircraft, and better than the Pakistani F-86 sabres. The significant difference was that Pakistani F-86's could carry sidewinder missiles, the Hunter only had cannons.
switching over from one fighter jet to another amidst all the chaos of war must be challenging and having done so with actual combat kills shows his high skill set
Excellent! You are super inspiring! Thank you for such quality content
Thanks! More content coming up. And thank you for being a subscriber for so long!
@@showtime112 it is truly a delight to follow you. Loved the African conflicts series. In fact I am playing a boardgame called Warbirds (pretty smooth air combat simulation) and I get inspired by the scenarios you re enact! Would love to see at some point some WWI content!!! Thank you!
@@davidfortezadelrey3181 WWI is in long term plans. Platforms exist for it, I just have to acquire it and find good scenarios.
@@showtime112 ohhhhh! I have a few scenarios up my sleeve
@@davidfortezadelrey3181 Feel free to suggest, I'll start compiling a list.
Love the Hunter, beautiful plane.
I agree!
Sir Saiful Azam.........👮
The pride of Bangladesh 🇧🇩
Yes was Bangoli but train by Pakistan airforce and was Pakistani at the time
As a Pakistani, end of his carrier is Heart Breaking. But he do what he think was right like to defend Pakistan or Arab brother or his own people of Bengal.
Some viewers commented that he was a sort of a mercenary. I don't think so, it seems to me that he was motivated primarily by his beliefs (which is the exact opposite of a mercenary)
@@showtime112 His Status was same as Foreign legion in Ukraine helping them to defend. Air Commodore Abdul Satar Alvi said 16 people volunteer to PAF for this and if They died they will be disowned.
Mercineries do things for money but they do it for their believe of defending brotherly Muslim nation.
Still paf couldn't recognise his kill..
You are sadly mistaken. He was once a Pakistani. It was his PAF training that made him what he was. He shot down an Indian jet in the 1965 war.. Despite 1971, tragedy, he is deeply admired and respected in Pakistan. After a very long time his squadron in PAF even invited him to attend an event.
Nice work Hrvoje. Very interesting!
Thanks, good to hear from you!
A fantastic video series on this great pilot. A month ago I read Cooper's book on the Iraqi Hunters so it's great to see the dramatization of the engagements.
Thanks! I can recommend that book, it gives a whole new perspective.
Part 2 is even better than the first one!
Our living eagle saiful Azam sir. Love from Bangladesh 🇦🇪🇧🇩
Hi , What is the aircraft at time stamp 1:06? I would love to know.
I think that is a Vautour.
Those are French built bombers, Sud Aviation Vautours. Israel operated bot single seat and two seat versions.
Amazing! One of your best videos, delighted to have watched it many times.
