That is exactly why I enjoy their songs so much more than the other bands I listen to. They're not afraid of being judged by the things they say because God's using them.
I love how real and direct the lyrics are.

Mike is full with wisdom. I have been thinking about this issue a lot about the Christian artists making superficial songs that are just "happy clappy". He might be right with the thing about CCM artist not making songs about some issues. Now that is why bands like Switchfoot and Needtobreathe, Tenth Avenue North (also Audrey Assad) are INSANELY precious and important for me. The are not technically CCM, they do not make music for a subculture, the do not write about their faith but FROM their faith. They are not a Christian Band but a band of Christians. I would not be alive without them. (Not exaggerating.) Their songs had more impact on my life that most hymns or worship songs. The honesty, the deepness, the rawness, the struggle, the being okay with saying out doubts and just not say always the theologically "right things". I can always connect and relate. If it were up to me I would sing their songs in my church with others but I know this probably would never happen. Which is kind of ironical cause they make songs that resemble the Psalms the most to me. So glad to see that there are some exceptions in the CCM world who also start to be brave and "be different". It gives me hope.... We also need more songs of lament and confession in the church. It makes me very sad that although they exist, in most Churches those are not popular. They should be. We need time like oxygen.

Tenth Avenue North's music and Mike's talks have really guided me in some very dark times, and shown me a way to look at the gospel that isn't full of judgement for not living up to what we are suppose to be as "perfect" christians. I think the topics on the new EP are amazing and hit some deep places. I was sexually assaulted in college, it shamed me, I was so afraid to come forward. I slept on my floor for weeks before finally telling a friend what had happened. At the time I was already severely anorexic and cutting, the rape put me in the darkest place I've been. She took me to my doc and I told him what had happened, and that I couldn't live like this, I was disgusting, it was my fault, I couldn't put food inside me. He put me in the hospital and tube fed me and kept me with a sitter for my own safety while trying to reach out to my parents and tell them that i was assaulted and needed support. They didn't offer support, they blamed me because the boy was at our home when they were out of town, like I had asked for me. I spent so many years broken and doing anything I could not to feel. I ended up in such a bad place I thought that God couldn't even see me anymore , I was so ashamed, so dirty, how could He love me. At that point I took an overdose that should have killed me. By the Grace of God my friend called me, and she felt in her heart that despite me saying i was fine there was something horribly wrong. She raced out of her job to my apartment and found me unresponsive on my bed, cold, and barely breathing. In the ambulance I coded, and that medic refused to let me go and smacked me hard across the face enough to get me to suddenly take a breath. I remember very little, but I remember clearly him grabbing my face and telling me that I wasn't going to die tonight. By the grace of an amazing , Merciful Father in Heaven I woke up in the ICU the next morning. I realized that God was not done with me, He didn't see me the way I saw myself as shameful and dirty, to Him I was still His daughter. I slowly began my way towards recovery from my anorexia and self harm, and I slowly started healing from what had happened. God has been there in many dark times in my life,, I just got away from a very abusive husband last year, I got my little boy and we got out, and I took the stand in court and told the truth, showed the hospital pictures of my broken body. I never thought I could get through it, every night I have found myself talking to God and thanking Him for His grace and love, that He is holding me up during this time and giving me the strength to keep moving forward and being a mom. Thank you Mike and the guys for all you do because you have saved my life many times, more than you even know.

God’s been taking me on this journey of greater intimacy with Him and I feel like I notice when people get it. Like I can tell when they really love Jesus for who He is and not just a concept of him. I saw Mike perform at a MercyMe concert - and this guy’s energy was just absolutely contagious. This man loves JESUS. I LOVE Mike’s response to his daughter’s question about Heaven being real. Jesus didn’t just pay the price to get us to Heaven - He paid the price to get Heaven inside us (My favorite quote from Todd White)! A beautiful answer that I’m sure she will carry the rest of her life.

Albums like this should be successful but it won’t because the world and even in the Christian life wanna be comfortable. This album goes beyond the comfort and addresses real life and helps us realize that we really need Jesus. That even followers have struggles too. Thank you Mike and all of Tenth Avenue North for releasing this EP this is the stuff that grows us. God bless.

I realized in such a deeper way that God understands and was with me. Thanks for all your music and words. Thank God for you, and your band.
Oh and Wally, it isn’t always men, but mostly, yes, that want to fix everything. I know I’m like this and I am a woman. I was a single mother of three children most of my life and when you are mother and father to kids, you have to work and provide in every way for your children, you have to become the fix it person. I think many single moms realize this. Thanks for your show. Watch it often. Thanks for having Mike on for this album. God bless you all!

I’m glad this is being talked about... however, I would like to say... there is one major topic that is missing... not just here but in Christian circles in general... Christian’s are behind the times... when it comes to splitting up sexes and saying this is just mans problem... pornography and lust is rampant with women as well... but it’s considered more shameful for women to come out and talk about... so it’s difficult for many girls to find freedom in this area... because it’s very rare to see this issue being brought into light for women. If you talk to one on one with girls that are willing to open up, you will find it very common... there needs to be more representation for women

    • @KaraDep87
      @KaraDep87 5 лет назад +4

I guess I wrote too soon... he does mention it’s also an issue for women... I just hope someday... there will be more women who can come out and talk about these things. Like we have seen with other issues.... representation does matter.

What an excellent conversation! I relate to your life experiences, Mike! I'm so glad you brought up these topics. And you're right--I have issues I want to talk about with 1 or 2 sisters in Christ. But I don't know anyone I can trust. Even women friends try to solve my problems instead of emotionally connecting with me first. Most of today's Christian women are not quick to listen and slow to speak. They only want to fix things. What's also frustrating for me is that I can't discuss my issues with my mother because she 1) is not a Christian yet; and 2) has never understood me and perhaps never will. I realize that only Jesus can fully understand me. But I thought mothers are supposed to be able to understand their daughters. Am I missing something? Anyway, I want to listen to your new album and let the songs provoke my thinking. God bless you, Mike & TAN!! 😇🙏

I think the only other Christian band that is open about things like sexual abuse is Switchfoot, namely in the album Nothing is Sound. I hope this opens the floodgates for Christian Music to discuss hard topics. Until then, Switchfoot, Twenty Øne Pilots, NEEDTOBREATHE, And obviously these guys!

I think what Mike was saying about the healthy desire that men are trying to fulfill through porn might be more about them needing respect and to be treated like the man they desire to be - conquerors etc.. What is the natural drive that men fulfill from watching video games that isn't being fulfilled in them in todays world?

      Hi Bonnie
Really sorry that this happened to you ☹️😰 Is there a trusted friend(s) that you can tell and who can support you and minister God's love to you.? It may be that you need a professional counsellor. Either way, please don't let the enemy use shame and lies to isolate you - bring the trauma into the light with safe people who can walk with you through it. Also bring the trauma into God's presence, talk to him, yell at him, scream at him, cry to him, be silent with him. I was sexually molested when I was child and as a teenager. I've been a Christian for years and it's only recently (Aug 2020) that I've realised that I haven't talked to God about what happened to me. Hope this helps...

This EP has great content, however I don't think Jeff should have produced this project. The song tackles heavy subject and it doesn't sound right with super poppy music. Had they done this project in a more acoustic fashion (not just an acoustic guitar, but similar to their old music), it would have made more sense. While Followers was more poppy from their past music and wasn't my favorite, their lyrics made sense to mix it with pop music. Love the message of the EP, not a fan of the music (except for I'm Listening).

22:00 - This is piling on an already ubiquitous man blaming culture. A man who desires intimate relations with his wife doesn't even make the top ten list of marital problems facing Americans. But women who deny all intimate relations with their husbands for years on end definitely makes the top ten list. Please stop blaming men for everything while giving women a pass.
FACT: ~75% of divorces are initiated by women.
FACT: Family court is a misnomer. It should be called wife court because it favors women at the expense of chidren and men.
If you really want to help marriages, then attack "THE" root of the problem. Attack feminism, not men. BTW, Feminism comes on both genders: men and women.
