  • Composed of conglomerate (right) and red sandstone (left) Rocks in Tenuta Pilastru, Sardinia are sedimentary rocks located near the village of Villanova Monteleone in the province of Sassari on the Italian island of Sardinia. The rocks are composed primarily of conglomerate and sandstone, with shale mixed in between. The conglomerate consists of rounded pebbles and cobbles cemented together. The sandstone is a red color and contains varying amounts of quartz, feldspar, mica, and fossils. Origin and Geological History Rocks in Tenuta Pilastru formed during the late Miocene epoch, approximately 11 million years ago. During this time, Sardinia was at the bottom of a shallow sea. This environment created the ideal conditions for the deposition of sediment, which included gravel, sand, silt, and clay. Different types of rock were formed depending on the composition of the sediment and conditions such as temperature and pressure. Over time, these sediments were deeply buried and solidified into the rocks found today.
