Just saw this. The first scene and the prison break scenes were incredible. All of Jennifer Lawrence's scenes were obviously fantastic. I had trouble suspending disbelief for instance with the supposed 1973 technology. I think I mostly agree with Matt's review. It got a little slow in the 2nd act and probably should have cut 15 minutes or so. Would have been great. The action scenes were some of the best in any comic book movie in years in this installment of X-Men.
Matt, you are amazing and we all respect you. But it appears (as you said) you were in a bad place (mentally and physically) when you saw this movie. But there was TONS of subtext. Charles was a microcosm of the ills from the 70s - the soldiers that lost their limbs from the Vietnam war, the people that were on heroin in the 70s, the loss of hope for the American dream because of the war then, all rolled up into one neat package with Charles. It was a touching movie about hope. And even if you don't agree - do we ALWAYS need such a heavy handed backstory? Non of this existed in Avengers yet you loved that movie. Also, the title hints at another sub text - days of future past. Because the future of being ruled by out of control robots could be OUR future, aka the singularity.
I fucking love this channel - in this day and age of youtube movie reviewers, nobody ever actually goes in depth into movie discussion and reviews these days...nothing past "ZOMG IT WAS AWESOME. THE ACTION WAS AMAZING. OMG IT WAS FUNNY. OMG THE ACTING WAS AMAZING!" movie reviews these days are nothing but gushing fanboys now...so glad this channel exists
This was the best X-men movie by far! I loved the guy that goes super fast! I always liked these movies but I enjoyed this the best. I watch so many movies, I'm like Ben. I don't remember shit either lol.
I'm with Christy in that I give the movie a 9. I'm someone who hasn't had much to do with the franchise, but this particular one caught and held my attention from beginning to end. For me, this movie belongs to James MacAvoy. He shines in it. A brilliantly versatile actor who can very much take on any role and/or genre. Thanks for your review. Cheers.
I loved it when Mrs Christy Lemire made a Prince lyric reference. "In through the out door." To bad she wasn't wearing a raspberry beret. You know, the kind you find at a second hand store.
This is my problem with Ben Mankiewicz as a movie critic: He clearly dislikes superhero / fantasy / adventure movies; but rather than acknowledging that those movies are not tailored to his particular taste, he chooses to rationalize hacky arguments about said films not being really good, he's eerily close-minded when it comes to this type of entertainment.
He said he Did like all the X-Men movies and that he did like The Winter Soldier. Just that he liked this X-Men movie way better than the rest of the super hero movies. But that he just doesn't care at all about comics or super heroes in general.
Ben is a great critic: He dislikes superhero movies because the market is saturated and so they're uninteresting. Unless they're good enough to stand out.
I agree. If he wants to be seen as a respectable professional film critic, he needs to open minded to ALL genres because even though, they are a lot of superhero/comic book movies being made, they're all different. They all have styles, tones, stories, visuals, and themes, so he really needs to stop with that bullshit "they're all the same, so I hate them" argument because they're not. Captain America was VERY different from X-Men. They were not the same kind of movies.
How can you say that and still consider being taken seriously when he gives this film, a superhero film, an 8.8? He has a valid point in that they're becoming overly common and starting to overstay their welcome, but he clearly enjoyed this one as it does a better job than the rest. Your complaint is pretty misplaced here.
Drake Brunette How people view rating systems 10 - I liked it just as much as you did 9 - Pretty good 8 - Don't bother 7 - Don't bother 6 - Don't bother 5 - Don't bother 4 - Don't bother 3 - Don't bother 2 - Don't bother 1 - Don't bother
In the comic book series they failed to go back in time but actually jumped to another time stream that had almost identical events to their own and was about to hit the start of the events that lead to the mutant apocalypse. It would be sorta bittersweet for the mutants in the future since they knew they didn't change their own past but at least they knew that their other selves could have a chance.
Alonso Duralde is mighty annoying and never rates anything above a 7. This movie was a fucking 11/10. Other than Ben and Matt, the other two people have nothing interesting to say. Is there any part Jennifer Lawrence can't play?
So good to have Bryan Singer back, the movie was good, there was a badass moment for each mutant, I liked them all. Interesting new power for Kitty, I don't see how it could make sense, but it's fascinating nonetheless.
Producers have said "Origins - Wolverine" and (at least part) of "The Last Stand" aren't canon anymore, even before this movie begins and time travels it all away. So not all the previous movies are canon, Alonso. This movie also totally wouldn't fit with what happened in "Origins - Wolverine".
There is no continuity error with Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, she played the younger version of the character in the First Class movie while Rebecca Romijn was the older version of Mystique from the first trilogy and loses her powers in the last movie. That is why she doesn't appear in the future with the original x-men.
Although I loved this movie, and loved it a lot more than the first three, I understand where Matt and Alonso are coming from. I'm not an X-Men fangirl, but I am a Star Trek fangirl, and I felt the same way about the most recent ST movie as they do about this X-Men movie. Sometimes the reason we love these great franchises is because of the overarching message the narrative is consistently selling, and when the film lacks that message, it can be jarring for hardcore fans. For instance, to me, ST is about exploration and understanding humanity in all people, so I was disappointed when the latest film was just basically about blowing shit up.
Days of Future Past is exactly what the X-Men franchise needed because there was literally nowhere else to go but backwards once they'd axed three core characters while simultaneously butchering the Phoenix Saga and Dark Phoenix Sagas. They pulled off the reboot wonderfully, despite a few inconsistencies that will never be addressed (since those universes no longer exist, other than in the memories of Prime Wolverine and possibly Xavier's as well).
Alright before all you people jump over me, I´m gonna clear that I did liked this movie, for me it's a 7.6 or something like that, but people are going nuts about it and its getting kind of annoying. it does has amazing features. just the Fassbender and McAvoy scenes makes the movie worth a look, the quicksilver scene was great and funny (a bit overrated), good action scenes and a smart well written script. but lets face a lot the film problems, Mystique´s reasons aren't fully established and she´s given a lot of good arguments to not kill Trask and she just doesn't listen, and I know, maybe the character it's just dumb but she´s not we know that from previous films. also, we are left to believe that she developed strong links with the first class group that last like two days and then she abandoned them, because that is the only reason why she went psychopath and wanted to kill Trask because of his death reason. so with mystique character no fully developed the movie failed in many ways, her motivations are essentially the engine of the movie. rembember that it is my humble opinion and my intentions are not to to disrespect anybody and if I did my sincere apologies
I would have to agree with Mat. This movie was just alright. And by no means was this movie anywhere near as good as Captain America. My problem with this movie was there just wasn't enough action. I'm sorry, but if want to serious drama, I wouldn't pick a superhero movie. I want more Colossas, more Ice Man, and much more Wolverine action! (By the way, we need a rated r Wolverine movie)
Not enough action? The fights against the Sentinels, the hilarious scene with Quicksilver [which I'll count as action since it technically was], almost every scene with Magneto or Mystique? None of those had enough action for you? Hell, most of these characters DIE, some of them dying TWICE and in extreme ways including decapitation, triple impalement and even cut entirely in half.
AzureRoxe Not to mention that the X-Men has always been _story_ driven. Nowadays if stuff isn't crashing, exploding and people aren't fighting or shooting at each other in every scene, it's "not enough action". If the film is constant fighting and explosion throughout, it loses it's impact. You need the "quiet" moments in between so the action can have it's "oomph".
Mystique could've already died in the future like beast and that's why Rebecca romijn wasn't in it. My only question is how did wolverine get his adamantium claws back in the beginning when at the end of wolverine he lost them?
time travel things confuse me. right from the star i had questions on the plot and trying to seek answers in the movie. 1)like how come the young (past) xavier could walk and why young beast was not blue. 2)then the question how was xavier alive in the present if jean grey's phoenix killed him at the end of the previous x-men trilogy movies. 3)and why is the non-mutant form of mystic not brunette, at the end of the previous x-men trilogy movies i remember her having dark hair when she was shot by the anti-mutant vaccine. do they not relate it to the previous xmen films?
no one knows mystics true original form shes a shapeshifter so technically rebecca roman could have been the form she wanted to use at that time or decade
i didn't quite understand the ending. how did logan go back to the future? clearly, after climax was over, we see that the sentinel program was abandoned, and logan went his own way, being captured and all that. did he suffer amnesia, and got his memory back after a really long time while sleeping?
Days of Future Past is good, maybe the 2nd best X-men movie after X2, but Winter Soldier is way better... Ben and Christy are crazy to think otherwise! Cap 2 is probably the best Super Hero movie ever, up there with X2 and Dark Knight and the Avengers.
CmdrSloanne If you stayed past the credits in Last Stand you would have seen that Prof X managed to Telepathically Transfer his consciousness into another body (Of a comatose guy). Later another mutant shaped that body to what his mind remembered it to be so he looks the same. (and still cant walk). Don't miss out this time, stay past the credits...... EN SABAH NUR
In the opening scene, not ALL were new - Iceman was from before. As for Inception... yeah, the music reminds a bit of Inception, but remember that the story is WAY older than Inception. And Ellen Page was Kitty Pride long before she was in Inception xD
It seems like they were more concerned about the accommodations at the screening than the film. He says the movie has no theme for humanity..umm the subtext in this movie is HOPE, Xavier is the embodiment of empathy in this film. The death of JFK imo is a turning point in American history when the zeitgeist changes from youthful optimism to opportunism. Charles Xavier in this film demonstrates how every American felt during that period after the Vietnam( hopelessness, drug dependency). Also, Xavier as MLK and Magneto as MX theme is handle so well in the plane scene.
For everyone wondering, that trailer is NOT a real promotional trailer for the film. The guys on What the Flick made it themselves. They do this a lot.
When What The Flick started I loved Ben's perspective and hated Alonso's. Now I feel the complete opposite wow haha. I put this film just below X2 (it being my favourite) in the entire franchise.
What I would recommend is to watch this movie and then re watch the first and you can actually see little hints and jokes that make so much more sense now in particular the see between profs x and magneto where they speak off hearing arguments like this before that were near carbon copies in each movie
another continuity error, is that in first class xavier is paralyzed when he still has hair, but in the last stand it shows a flashback of xavier and magneto going to gene greys house when she was a kid, and he is walking and bald.
***** No we are talking about X-men First Class, the one set back in the 60ies. That one was Directed by Matthew Vaughn. You're thinking about the TERRIBLE X-men: The Last Stand. A bad movie that tore apart the Phoenix Saga, but its all cannon. Though I'm guessing after this movie we are sort of rebooting a lot.
Xavier said exactly what happened to Mystique after killing Trask. He describes that Mystique was turned into an animal due to t*rture, experimentation and mutilation
With respect to this particular franchise, which I like for the most part - you know you're releasing too many superhero films when you can't call your second movie X-Men 2 anymore.
If they watched the same movie I did it actually answered all their questions. The Mystique in the first three movies is 30 years older than the one in first class and days of future past so they could be different looking. What drew me to the X-men was "Mutant" was a metaphor for "black". Xavier was like MLK and Magneto was Malcolm X. Again what they didn't pay attention to was older Magneto realized he helped make the mess they were in. A lot of what mutants were going through in the X-men books were the same as black people. Which brings up why I consider X-2 a piece of crap. X-2 was based off of one of the best Graphic Novels even printed called "God Loves, Man Kills". They totally screwed that up and are even in Days of future past. Stryker kills the only baby (I say that because you never find out the sex) his wife gave birth to. Then kills his wife. Retires from the military and became a huge TV evangelist using the money to fund a group of killers called the "Purifiers" who went around killing mutants. I hate reviewers how do not really pay attention to the movies they watch and don't really know enough of the source material. I used to watch WTF reviews all the time but they totally screw up superhero movies.
I feel like Ben doesn't like superheroes because all he's ever seen of superheroes is from movies and TV shows. I feel like if he read comics or played some games, he'd totally dig it. But who's gonna lose time in that, right ? :)
Magneto breaks out of the pentagon, and they wait another 30 mins of the film to tell the president. I think that's the sort of shit tricky dickie would want to know
Published on May 22, 2014 X-Men: Days of Future Past starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence...... not hugh jackedman ? :( awe-sadface
The end of *spits on the ground* X3 already gave us his mind reappearing in someone's body, and the end of The Wolverine he surprises Logan; 'long ago I told you that you weren't the only one with gifts!'
Eclipto14 So yes, they showed you it is possible for them to fix bad stuff in the past. Once you keep that in mind, is it still a mystery that Xavier's body being destroyed in X3 seems like it never happened?
8:15 .......WHAT....THE..."FLICK" are they even talking about?? Talk about the freaking movie, not about politics, not about how white people fear black people or anything else. damn!! This is making me depressed about a great movie. How about you get some freaking people who actually watch these movies and remember them some? ugh... so annoyed....
"I don't like the title...sounds like it's made by a nine year old" It is the name of the comic...stop being an old fart Ben. I'm sure there is a Meryl Streep movie somewhere that fits exactly what you're looking for.
what an amateur review, if you can even call it a review. its basically an unfinished discussion. When the one person said he didnt like it, he gave a vague reason to why and nothing else. there wasnt a deep discussion of the strong and weak points of the film just 4 "critics" talking.
They were bashing the title, without knowing history. Without knowing that this title has been out for decades. They find a small thing wrong with it, and blow it out proportion. I get its an opinion, but a lot of them just wish the movie was made in a way it only pleased them.
***** Wow. Well after growing up in the past 2 years, looking back at this, I still find it ignorant. The title is fan service. That's the point of it. Now, I would say most people our age have a very clear view on what is good and what is not. A lot of reviewers in their 50s aren't able to appreciate some of the cinema today, because of how backwards they think. That doesn't go for all of them of course. Opinions are all subjective, but there is a fine line as reviewer. And I think older reviewers cross it way to often.
"A 100% valid question... Shut up." - "Oooooh, movie stars!" - Ladies and Gentleman, Ben Mankiewicz!
😂

Best X-Men Movie (with First Class and X2). Really good, best super-heroes movie since Avengers in my opinion. Can't wait for Apocalypse !
i realize I am kind of randomly asking but do anybody know a good website to watch newly released movies online ?
man what trailer did they use I cant find it :(
Where is that trailer? That is the best and only trailer I like. Where did you find it because I can't.

Loved it. It's a 9 for me

Quicksilver = A Boss
why do these guys work as movie critics when they clearly don't like any movies lol
They gave it an 8 and only made one complaint in this entire review.
they're not really super hero movie lovers except maybe one of them.
Well... they are movie CRITICS... so, what better person to be a critic than one that hates movies :P
They gave it an average rating of 8/10...Does 80% sound low to you?

the movie didn't explain the Emma Frost paradox and created a small one with Banshee and Siryn so I'm knocking it down to a 9.5
Oh wah, they only rated it well instead of BEST MOVIE EVER so they must hate it.
Actually he does... and he's a comic book fan....

What trailer is this?? SO beautiful!
Probably going to be the best movie of the year, and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique just makes it a million times better. Can't wait to see it.

no one knows mystics true original form shes a shapeshifter so technically rebecca roman could have been the form she wanted to use at that time or decade
Finally found the song. It's actually a Hans Zimmer's score from Inception entitled Time.
Football field? Inception? Isn't that Dark Knight Rises?
i didn't quite understand the ending. how did logan go back to the future? clearly, after climax was over, we see that the sentinel program was abandoned, and logan went his own way, being captured and all that. did he suffer amnesia, and got his memory back after a really long time while sleeping?
I would've loved to see The Sentinels against Sebastian Shaw. All the fire power the Sentinels have would've sent Shaw on a power binge
Days of Future Past is good, maybe the 2nd best X-men movie after X2, but Winter Soldier is way better... Ben and Christy are crazy to think otherwise!
Cap 2 is probably the best Super Hero movie ever, up there with X2 and Dark Knight and the Avengers.
i havent seen this yet.. but didnt Professor X die in last stand?
This is an alternate time line, so not in this one. I haven't seen it yet, but that was the explanation I was given.
so if its an alternate time line, x1 trough 3 shouldnt be referenced in this film. these critics said they showed clips from those films.
Like I said, that was the explanation I was given. I'm not sure how it all works out.
yup!so did Cyclops who were killed by Jean in X-Men 3. hated that movie they ruin the whole Phoenix story.

Lack of social commentary? Did they miss the obvious drone metaphor in the sentinels?

another continuity error, is that in first class xavier is paralyzed when he still has hair, but in the last stand it shows a flashback of xavier and magneto going to gene greys house when she was a kid, and he is walking and bald.
He can walk in this movie as well (Mcavoy Xavier). The gunshot from First Class is NOT what eventually paralyzes him.
^oh ok. I didn't know that. thanks. I've not seen this movie yet.
That one was directed by Brett Ratner who has zero knowledge of the backstory so that film might as well be forgotten haha.
***** No we are talking about X-men First Class, the one set back in the 60ies. That one was Directed by Matthew Vaughn. You're thinking about the TERRIBLE X-men: The Last Stand. I just saw it today, and i agree it is a 7.3 out of 10, not allot of action more about plot compared to other x-men movies
Did you see the post-credits scene? ;)
Loved the movie! I surprisingly liked it much better than Capt 2 as well.
saw this movie yesterday ive only seen two X-Men movies first class and this one and i enjoyed both
Dragonball Goku vs the Sentinels, that would be funny to see
If they watched the same movie I did it actually answered all their questions.
I like the way Ben talks about this movie lol I'm so excited to see it
I'm actually the opposite of Ben. I think there was a little too much dialogue in this movie and the battle scenes weren't good enough.
captain america was great...as a go-to-sleep-now movie
Ben Mankiewicz hates everything lol
but he liked this, so there goes your theory
I feel like Ben doesn't like superheroes because all he's ever seen of superheroes is from movies and TV shows. I feel like if he read comics or played some games, he'd totally dig it. But who's gonna lose time in that, right ? :)
Aboubacar Amine *quietly raises hand*
Brilliant review guys!!! Loved it! Can't wait to see the film
These critics are so critical!
Jennifer Lawrence ruining Mystique.
Stopped watching this soon as guy on the left started complaining about his 'screening experience'.
Magneto breaks out of the pentagon, and they wait another 30 mins of the film to tell the president. I think that's the sort of shit tricky dickie would want to know
That was the best summer movie I watched this year. Idk wat there talking about
This movie deserves a 10!!!
To answer Alonsos question the movie is essentially a reboot.
I could have sworn it was a baseball stadium not a football stadium
You guys should really lost this silly rating system. What is the real difference between a 8.8 and a 9.0?
It is very entertaining. But I like first class more
Ben likes it, thats good enough for me.
Hotel Rwanda was rated PG-13. And that movie had dead bodies everywhere

X-Men: Days of Future Past starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence......
not hugh jackedman ?
:( awe-sadface
surprised christy loved it
A really, really good movie.
Christ, Ben's like a Sheldon of sport.
WHY IS WARPATH SO TINY IN THIS MOVIE?
I disagree. Winter Soldier was a better movie.
8.9 for me always!
8.8 really just give it a 9 come on now.
I like the title.
I'm sorry but Ben needs to read up more on black history
They don't like anything
If I could save time in a bottle...
Captain America was the superior movie. X-Men was good but parts of the plot didn't make much sense.
Nameless Paladin Really? what parts didn't make sense?
neither did Captain America.
I like days of future past more but I do love cap 2
Why do i feel like alonso never likes any good movie
I give it 10/10
Did they explain how Prof X ended up in his old body after being vaporized.
No :) But time travel is what this movie is all about, so...
The end of *spits on the ground* X3 already gave us his mind reappearing in someone's body, and the end of The Wolverine he surprises Logan; 'long ago I told you that you weren't the only one with gifts!'
So...no? That's fucking retarded.
Actually I believe it was sorta explained in the end credits scene in the second Wolverine does wacky things in Japan movie.
Eclipto14 So yes, they showed you it is possible for them to fix bad stuff in the past. Once you keep that in mind, is it still a mystery that Xavier's body being destroyed in X3 seems like it never happened?
best marvel movie ever. simple.
Ben has movie-viewing issues. Whatever, don't care about xmen
An Ellen Page X men Movie where she was the main star would be awesome
i feel offended that the jew says "the white people" .
Yea, I don't get people above the age of 35 ish any more. Or how old people can just review movies any more.
easy, they see a movie and then give their opinion. quite simple, really
They were bashing the title, without knowing history. Without knowing that this title has been out for decades. They find a small thing wrong with it, and blow it out proportion. I get its an opinion, but a lot of them just wish the movie was made in a way it only pleased them.
Husnan Chaudhry
yeah, let's ignore the fact they liked the movie
yup :P
And I think older reviewers cross it way to often.
damn none of these guys read comics when they were young they all look like nerds i dont get it
