Thank you again for another thoughtful video. I'm so discouraged by almost all of the videos on youtube now about photography. They don't bring anything intellectual to the conversation. Your channel is the only one I watch anymore. It's interesting to hear your perspective on America. I find it fascinating to hear how people from around the world view America. America is hard to put into one box. We are so different from state to state and even within each state there are so many differences. Anyway, thank you so much for what you do! Looking for inspiration in Boise, Idaho, U.S.A. :)

This is a very well done video. I appreciate Matt Black’s photography and his wanting to call attention to the most in need, and struggling citizens of America. I believe there is quite a bit more to the story that Mr. Black’s photos do not or cannot address or show. The why’s and who’s of why this situation continues, and why most of these areas or cities in these states that he chose to shoot in, just seem to never improve. Some of it is circumstantial, some of it is by design. None of it is good. As good and enlightening as his photos are they just scratch the surface of a problem that has plagued this country for much too long. Thank you for bringing this video to us and for all of your hard work! Stay safe! God bless! 🙏✌️

Since 2001, I live in California's central valley, in the town of Davis, which is where the University of California, Davis (where I work and got my PhD) is situated. The town is a middle and upper class town surrounded by farmland, gorgeous farmland. (Well, at least to me.) But, as a refugee who as a lived on surplus US government food and whose parents were both factory workers (they were not factory workers back home, though), I often wonder where farm workers and the poor are in this are, where they live. Yes, we do have homelessness here, but it is rarely visible out in the street like it is in cities; there are many students here who are broke and/or come from poor households, but they are rarely visible. The good thing is, the university has programs that assist students w2ho are in financial need, who sometimes cannot afford meals.
Really enjoyed this because it made me grateful for where and how I live now (kinda the American Dream, but my way, and it has been an interesting/challenging journey) but also because Matt Black's work that you shared and your fine commentary once again reminded me that those of us who are fortunate can do a lot to share the abundance that we enjoy.
And, BTW, stunning photography. Stunning B&W.
    Thank you.

Your comment is super important because it highlights the experience of someone who has lived a close enough reality to perhaps some of the subjects in these photos. Another excellent mini documentary about a photographer and his work. Matt Black captured not only the heart of his subjects. How Americans look upon the 'foreigners' who migrate to 'the promise land'. The separation between the middle class and those who work all their lives with little to show for it. Very moving documents.

I didn't realize there are large Mixtec communities here in San Diego and Tijuana, it seems most people are from Culiacan and the northwestern parts of Mexico. Indigenous communities are an integral part of Mexican culture and today make up about %15 of the population. Francisco Jimenez wrote a nice series of books for young adults based on his life growing up in Santa Maria, California and working as a field worker but going on to become a university professor.

The vid is great, as usual, Tatiana, and thanks for it. As a general introduction for the artist it works beautifully. But, you may need to focus a little more on the details rather than a overlooked global aspect of the artist's work.
A picture is worth a thousand words, and i know this is as difficult to ask, as a task, to perform, but your overall work mrs Tatiana would greatly improve if you could find times and spaces to question what a perticuliar frame is all to give. Refining the details, reframing the light, questioning the framing, and delivering how your personnal VIEW on one single photo had enthralled your aesthetic or social personal viewscape.
I hope u do not suffer from my opinion, for I'm enthusiast by your work. It's just that I feel u may get more artisticly involved if u define what's ur own point of view on Matt Black's (or any other's) pictures, one by one, rather than globalizingly summarize it in a YTube-friendly academical and connoisseuresque approach.
PS : excuse my french, i am not a native english speaker.
Post Post Scriptum : despises my tiny and maybe unrelevant criticism, i do love your work, but just hope u would somehow somewhat someday dare to face a more personnally engaged physical, emotional, personal approach to your video essays. Be blessed. Keep it real. You rock.

I think his theme could equally be applied to the U.K. in 2024
It’s an odd one … where do photographers take inspiration ?
From some it is wildlife, wilderness, landscape etc and that all speaks
For me, this would be my way of showing things I read and see daily, want to shout about and see for what they really are. The photography is only the medium though at that level
I suspect I’d look for local contrast between ares of poor/rich within a few miles (there are plenty) but who knows till you go look eh ?
    Made me think so thanks
For all younger people as photographers, your skills are probably perfected to a fair amount but just think of this …
What are you saying through those skills ?
Imagine being closer to 70 than 17 and think what you’d want to say then use your skills to do so
Beats the hell out of doing weddings

I agree with you that these photos can and should convey a message, but I can't see how they can reach the people who need to see them, or whether they would have any effect if they did.

Good point, to be honest I didn’t include it in the video but, speculating here I think perhaps if these photos are included in books or presentations designed to perhaps get more help or eyes into the situation, similar to what the photos of Dorothea Lange did in their time.. helping creating programs or even local charities to help people in need, it could be a good way of helping by portraying this ongoing reality, but I don’t know if this has been done or not. So this is my guess. Thanks for watching!

We are under the illusion that the uber rich have a heart and will do anything to help the poor. Photos are revealing to only those who open the book. Reality is that too many vote corrupt people in power, I give you New York as an example, and the problem gets worse. There is no solution. Try to fix not only the U.S, but Canada, Central and South America, Africa, Middle East, Europe, Russia, North Korea, Philippines and China.

I guess that Matt Black's art form, as being close to his famous predecessors, is intentional. It shows us that nothing changed for the poorest people. Beautiful and tragic. Did anyone accused him to make beauty (and money?) from adversity, as it happened to Salgado?

I disagree with american reality. It still stays a social construction from reality. The video is beautiful. But as a european, I cant stop thinking that this american nostalgia feeds the america great again ideology. You are not an exception with this nostalgia, many american channels in photography are in this trend.

Tune Tank offers "free copyright removal"? I hope that's not what I think it is. There is no Matt Black or others that you talk about with "free copyright removal". It's all creative people-including you-have. It's a legal right and it's being eroded illegally.

    • @TatianaHopper
      @TatianaHopper  4 месяца назад

I don’t understand your comment, tunetank offers free copyright removal of music that people use from their platform it has nothing to do with Matt Black or the photos, it’s pretty clear in the video but I’m sure it was misunderstood or something similar.

@@TatianaHopper your sponsor is in the "free copyright removal" business. Copyright is all we-photographers, musicians, artists-have. It's great for free music for your video but when everyone starts to expects and demand copyright free art-photos, music, art-we are cooked. "Free copyright removal" is such a red flag that I had to comment. I respect your photographer education work a lot. You are doing excellent work and telling it to a good sized audience in a compelling way...including your fine introduction to Matt Black.

Ok. I see. Tunetank checks for copyright violations. I did not hear it that way. I heard it in as a way to get around copyright.

    • @TatianaHopper

@@douglasmaclellan5283 I think those are very different things, tunetank like so many other platforms (artlist, motion array, epidemic) offers free copyright removal over what they own because they acquired the rights of a given song from an artist that willingly sold it to them or have artists under contract to them in order to produce music to be available on their platform which therefore can be used by creators like me or you or anyone else on their projects. No one claims in this video or in any other segment to be offering free copyright removal of anything else that they don’t own - photos and other materials, it is very very clear. I think if people start demanding that it’s really their problem in the sense that it really is not the same as what these platforms do… copyright of images / video / public domain / fair use is not really what we’re taking about in this sponsored segment but rather the copyright the company owns (their music). I hope this clarifies, thanks so much for watching! Peace ✌🏻

Ps - the sponsor is not in the free copyright removal business, I advice to check the links to understand the nature of their business and how it works. It might be helpful.
