Here's an idea for getting started. I knew I needed lots of practice before offering my sharpening services for money. I went to my church and offered to sharpen the kitchen knives. Wow, I jumped off the deep end. There were 43 knives in the kitchen drawers. I sharpened every one. Then went to two more churches and did the same. Then Knights of Columbus hall. In all I sharpened over 200 knives before I ever charged for the work. But I got so that I felt confident and I continue to improve. I feel I learn a little each time I sharpen.
Your story has inspired me to start my own knife sharpening service here in San Diego! Ordered a set up from work sharp that will hopefully get here this week so I can get started. Doing it in addition to being an active duty Marine 🤙🏼
Matt's the real deal and has helped many, including myself, start a successful sharpening business. He was and continues to be generous enough to share all that he learned getting started with his business and beyond, giving those of us in the Guild of Professional Sharpeners a huge leg up.
Thanks for sharing this. I am part of the Guild of Pro Sharpeners and Matt is the Sharpening Boss and is as open and helpful as you see in the video. Thanks for bringing the value to the sharpening world!
This is a fantastic series with more to come I hope! I'd love to learn about and see in-depth teachings of other methods and techniques. Including handle repairs or restorations, the list is endless...
New knives seldom have a great factory edge. That is why sharpening a low end knife is better than buying another low end knife. It will be better than knew.
I just ordered me the Work Sharp Precision Adjust Elite Knife Sharpener kit and it should be arriving in two days. I'm gonna give this a shot but first I'll start with sharpening my own kitchen knives.
I use a buffing compound called white diamond to polish the wire edge after the abrasive belt on my 2x48 belt grinder with a 8 inch buffer on the other side.
Awesome videos. They have put an idea to try to sharpen knives…. I have some stones & have been watching the different systems you sell at Work Sharp . What is the organization your were talking about online ? Thanks
Me encantaron los vídeos , quisiera saber si puedo utilizar algunos de sus productos electrónicos para mejorar el rendimiento en mi incipiente negocio de afilados ya que estoy afilando a mano alzada pero quiero darle un servicio más rápido
Weird I always thought to truly sharpen a knife mainly a chef knife wet stones are the best.I am starting to think this is not true my plan was to get shapton pro 320 1500 5000 and start here my ? Lansky , Russian , wicked edge ,and now I see some use belt Sanders so is it better to learn freehand or the angle helper type or 1×30 I am really broke left the restaurant work and landscaping is getting hit any thoughts would be appreciated thanks 👍

Great stuff, the making money sharpening series was fantastic! Nice work and thank you for the 3 videos.
Thanks for watching and glad you liked it!
In Australia the cost of the Ken Onion is around $360 and you’re lucky to get $5-7 a knife
I've enjoyed watching all 3 of these. I have no interest in sharpening as a gig but I liked hearing what these guys had to say about doing that.

I have actually tried to teach a client how to sharpen his Japanese knife and he didn't want to know. "I'll just pay you, thanks." lol

Maybe those high-end knives the owners sharpen them themselves.
