- *VW Jetta 09A Transmission Teardown*
*Subject:* Analysis of a Volkswagen 09A Transmission Teardown
*Key Findings:*
*Transmission Code:* Matching the transmission code is crucial for compatibility.
*Fluid Leak:* A common leak point is the pump o-ring.
*Speed Sensors:* This transmission has three internal speed sensors. All three sensors should be replaced on any rebuild.
*Fluid Filling:* Use the fill plug and standpipe, avoid the band anchor bolt.
*Valve Body:* Uses a silicone sealant. Solenoid issues can cause shifting problems.
*Band Anchor Bolt:* Removing it can cause a loss of reverse.
*Reverse Clutches:* Commonly worn, indicating slippage.
*Pump Gears:* Must be marked before disassembly for correct reassembly.
*Underdrive band:* Can wear at the servo apply point and cause slipping
**Internal Filter**: Can only be changed by removing the bell housing
*Recommendations:*
*Match transmission codes* before replacement.
*Replace all three-speed sensors* during any rebuild.
*Inspect the pump O-ring* for leaks.
**Use the correct fluid filling method**.
**Address any valve body or solenoid issues**.
**Thoroughly inspect clutches, bands, and components**.
**Mark pump gears**.
**Use anaerobic sealant on the differential**.

BRAVO! Just surfing for info on a 01 Jetta I just bought from a customer. Came across your video. Although it was unrelated I gained a lot of knowledge. Another day I learned something!
P.S I have been an auto Tech for 40 + years. You can always learn more!
Thank You!

Hi Hiram, you are the rock star of Transmission. You have saved me a tonne (metric) of trouble by posting this video on YTube. Let me explain... I own a 05 Jetta with over 500,000 KM's and wanted to give it a transmission filter and fluid change. Bought the filter & gasket and that special VW G052 Trany Oil (liquid gold) @ $40.00 Cnd./litre. Just about to start undoing the valve body cover when I decided to confirm the type of trany I have. Found the # 09A... had a quick look at your video to find out that the damn filter is inside the trany and impossible to replace unless you have Hiram do it for you. LOL Damn VW engineers, they do this all the time, who has ever heard of lifetime (warranty period of the trany) oil in a transmission. I guess I will have to just settle on changing the oil periodically and hope this keeps the beast running. Thanks for your vids.
.
Always great watching your videos, thank you for filming and posting!
thank you so much for this video. I've been looking for the speed sensors on the outside the entire time. thank you!!!!!
Fantastic video, very though and explained exceptionally well. Just purchased a 98 beetle and needing to do a transmission service, your video was just what I needed. Thank you and again, very well done!
you should be a teacher you are awesome. great way to teach. keep up the good work
You are the "Transmission King"!
Thanking you from Singapore, Sir.
Hiram abi sen mükemmel birisin. Yeteneğin takdire şayan. Eski dosttan selamlar.
Great video! The assembly process of this would be very helpful thanks for sharing your knowledge
"We have fun with transmissions, but we have fun with them one time" Hiram Gutierrez
Very helpfull i'm replaced my valvebody and need change the oil filter but with this video i learn where is located, thank you!
Hiram, that 09A is the same trans that is in my son's 02 jetta.
I have been waiting for this video!!! I have enjoyed your work and your videos, I would like to see the trouble code video update. I was glued to the video.. I was hoping to see the assembly on this too .. Do you ever think you will do a online classes I would be a student for sure..
My boys and I love to wrench in the garage its a beautiful life.. Thank you for the time and the quality of the videos
Great video... you are amazing ... it seems like an easy task, but it has many items. GReat
That's exactly how I tackled my gaskets, and it worked.
Hi on that transmission you didn’t indicate the temp sensor ( g93) location. ? Could you comment on the sensor location bc iam getting a 00300 code. Pls and thx.
I have a Golf4 1.9tdi 2002 automatic transmission Jatco 09a. The question is that there is no fifth gear. The valve body is new. except that there is no fifth gear. After 70 k/h Shows 5 well, the actual one is fictitious but in reality it remains at four. Please can you give me some advice other than the hydraulic unit, what else could it be? Thanks in advance, I will be very grateful for your answer. Code 00652
*HOW COULD SOMEONE THUMBS DOWN **_ANY_** VIDEO THIS MAN CREATES & POSTS? WTF*
HUBBABUBBA DOOPYDOOP they are cynical trolls. This guy is the man
Fat thumbs hit the wrong place by accident. Or someone has to to make it look fair and unbiased...no "fake news".
i went to a local trans shop today and was given an estimate of $2,800 for a rebuild of a VW 09A/GNZ for a 2004 Jetta 1.8T. I know you mentioned a few times about making sure to change the speed sensors and I specifically asked if the kit includes the speed sensors - he said no we never do those unless they go bad. Needless to say I will be taking my business elsewhere.
Harsh up and down shifts are usually the 2/4 duty solenoid.
Quite a common fault just remove front cover, absolutely no need to replace all 9 solenoids.
We change these in situ on Rover 75's.
The cracked reverse piston fault can also be done in situ.
Done loads of repairs on these Jatcos without removing and stripping the whole unit, which keeps the cost well down for owners
Hiram Gutierrez, your video are excellent. Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Apart from that, this tranny sure is complicated.
Tu eres increíble hermano...papá and i watched it all amazed at your mastery @👌👌
excellent, as always...
You said when it's cold and doesn't want to shift it could be the valve body and or solenoids. That's my exact problem is it won't shift until it's warmed up. Would you recommend changing the solenoids?
Yes go ahead.👍
Great information, thank you.
Hi Hiram, again a great video, thanks a lot!
Looking forward to a DPO (aka AL4) transmission being diagnosed by the master
regards,
Marc
Will hardened seals cause slipping in the forward gears? I found that my reverse band had the "ramp" wear that u described
very good!
Years later, but where is the fluid level check screw/bolt/plug hole? I've read that there is one, but don't know where it is.
Thanks.
Great video! I wish you put it back together on a video. I put everything back together but not sure if I did something wrong. The rear cover is hovering over a little under quarter inch and no more as if it were preloaded. Is that normal? I kept an eye out for the little details from what you were putting aside as of the bearings and what not. I couldn't get my torque converter in all the way after the rebuild. I'm guessing that the key slot was shifted a little off and needs to be centered again.
Es posible reparar una 09a que desliza de 2da a 3ra solo abriendo por atras y cambiando los discos de fricción?
I want to thank you for this video , it is very well made, rigth to the point and it has been very helpful . I have only one question , is the vw tiptronic 09a the same as the 09b? I mean the same overhaul kit works the same on both transmissions? what is the difference? thanks alot Hiriam :)
Hey Hiram, Thanks for the VW 09A trans video. Could you upload the assambly process for it?
You're my hero!
have same transmission in Volkswagen GTI... thanks transmission filter internally. I was wondering where that filter was😆
Does this transmission have a standpipe on one of those lower ports? The manual says the tranny can be serviced using it. Service to overflow.
Thanks for the great video. I am about to attempt my first rebuild. Mine is fine in first and reverse but slips badly as soon as I get to second (fluid is clean and full). Any suggestions what I might look for?
'02 jetta 1.8t.. reverse was forward when I got it and forward was nothing, towed it to my shop and put it in reverse and it worked perfectly but no forward gears... fixed leak and filled up with fluid and had no movement in any gear... swapped valve body and 're filled and all gears were forward gears... drained a little out and has no movement in any gear... any idea what would be wrong...???
Love the video...thanks for sharing....I'm trying to rebuild a yep transmission...which book is best atsg or vw?
I have problem can you help me what is cause it.when I drive normal and when I press the break or remove my leg from the accelerator paddle. the transmission un-engage. I must put it on "N" then "D" again to engaged the gear.what is the possible error will cause this problem.it is VW Jetta 2009BR
hello sr would you make a small video putting back the valvebody I'm having a hard time I'm not sure how to Aline the pin that is on back of valvebody thanks great work
Is there anyway you can show us how you pulled it off the car? Im having a hell of a time getting to the m12 triple square bolts holding it in and wondering what to do?
Mine is a 6 speed but shifting is quick. Probably delays a liltlebit fro. First to second and 3rd to 4th. Please give me advice on that. Thanks
Hiram, tendras el armado de la transmision 09A. Y excelente video
Very good video where are u working out of.Thanks Jody
If I don´t change the speed sensors, the unit will do the same things, I mean nothing gonna change or maybe, because I have hard shifts in the unit, thanks, greats videos!
great video. I just replaced valve body. now goes foward in reverse. is it possible I got the rooster comb not online with plunger?!?!
I have a 2002 jetta VR6! The transmission sometimes doesn't want to shift when you first take off, that I usually just pull off to the side of the road wait and then take off and then a little shift through the gears. There are no codes being shown. I was wondering if it's bad solenoids
I've just run into a 03 jetta 1.8t. The problem is it doesn't shift into second. DTC P0732 Gear 2 wrong ratio. What can you tell me before I tear into this thing? As always, thanks a bunch! BTW I was able to successfully repair my wife's 2012 Sonic with the blown up wavy and drum on her 6T30.
Nice work, sorry your so far away. thank you
Good video, Hiram. If the band anchor bolt is removed, does the trans need to torn down to re-anchor the band?
"Got a 14 here but it'll go"
Do you know how many teeth are on the torque converters for this trans
what job does the speed sensor at the turbine do is it the one that causes the car to not change gear unless the car sits and warms up for 45 minutes
I got a 2004 vw jetta reverse wont work until transmisión is warm ones is warm I put it on reverse and I have to step on the gas so it can work what can I do to fix it
Tell Me about the solenoid that would be responsible for the transmission not shifting until it warms up a few degrees. I know I should replace them all but, all of them test within spec (using an Ohm meter) so, I want to know which one of them is for surely bad.
good vidieo i replaced the three sensor and still getting a code for vss
Hi.tell me please, what can be with the gearbox 09A jatco. rear inherent, the first and second ok is also present, but there are no 3-4-5 missing as if the clutch was squeezed.
What would you charge to rebuild that thing right?
You good man and naice worke
Another great video Hiram. You mentioned the different "codes" on the production tags on the VW transmissions. Even if the codes and housings are different, could you have used the internal components with the other unit your car dealer had? Assuming the transmissions came out of the same type model and engine? Also, i have a customers 02 Jetta that has a long delay into reverse and a flair into 3rd. Might have that bad piston you were talking about in the Jaguars.
Is this the same transmission for a jetta 2011 baseline?
Muy buenos videos .tendrás videos de reparación de cremelleras o dirección hidráulica gracias por sus videos
Hello I have a 2005 Jetta gli and it has a transmission code it reads, gearbox oil temperature sensor g93. Any suggestions on weather I should also change valve body? Price, parts, labor?
I replaced all solenoids and all speed sensors. Still shifting hard. What could be wrong. Valve body? Thanks.

Hiram I have a question. ..I have a 2007 vw jetta Wolfsburg 2.5... when car is cold... nice and smooth. .. start warming up or driving in a hot day... start jeering and slips. .... has a automatic transmission code "juj" any suggestions? torque converter? valve body? solenoids? please help.... thanks
Wonderful Job Bro! You are dead on with your info and explanations. Question. I have a 1992 Mk2 VW Jetta Carat 1.8 8v. It has an automatic tranmission. It shifts from first to high gear. How can i adjust the shifting on this unit. Or is it the a valve body issue. It has 250k, and i found it sitting for 2+ years. Just got it running from all the ground issues, now this.
Hi. Great videos. I'm trying to open a small shop but the parts are so expensive. I would like to provide help on normal prices. Could you please advise, from where you are taking the parts on a good price. Currently I'm working on 09A transmission (JF506E) on Audi A3 2001 19. TDI 131hp.
Are you still in business and rebuilding 09a transmissions? Love your work.....
My Jetta 2003 1.8T its not shifting from 3rd to 4th. 1,2,3 shifts ok, reversa ok, not shifting hard. With Codes 00300, 01166, 00652. What can i do to fix ir or its better ti remplaced ? 09A 321 l05 ( JP JC7 )
hey hiriam como estas?

Great vid.any advice on where to look on this same unit that barely moves forward and reverse,I checked fluid and it is full.have to rev it up to get it to slightly move in both forward and rev.
Hi can you tell me why my VW Jetta sometimes tries to stall the engine like its locked up but always manages to release itself without quite stalling ? whats the fix ?
Any info would be a real help please. Mr G UK
Hello, i have a quick question. i had the problem of no shifting up until the car warms up. i had good R and good D. the mechanic changed two selenoids only(since acording to the PC only two were bad). but the car is not working well after that. now it wont shift up even if i warm it up. somethimes does but for few moments. i still have good R and D. what do you think i should do? thats all what they did to the car. the change of those 2 selenoids. Gracias! Saludos de Mexico (My car is Jetta 2002 1.8t trans. 09A)
Hello Hiram,
On a 2015 TSI VW Jetta, If I replace the transmission, is it plug and play or will I need to get the transmission programmed to the car.
Amazing. Simply Amazing! You are easily one of the best mechanics I've seen just by this one break down alone. An it's not an easy job I know!
Can I ask tho where is the nut to drain the atf? An is there a protective shield under the car that you have to remove?
Thanks
Hi there ,Am having a prob with à VW golf IV TDI 115ps the gear box from 1 to 5 and from 5to1 reverse is working fine but every i have really massive shock in the transmission (like the box is shifting 2gears u know what I mean) Did you had such issues maybe ?Cheers from Germany (-;
Hi, I'm down In San Diego where are you located? how do I contact you? Thanks.
I watched your video on the tare down of a vw jetta automatic transmission, can you explain that if you remove the wrong bolt for filling the oil you can disconnect the reverse ban on the transmission. I just bought a car that has no reverse and the guy told me he just had the car in to have the fluids changed, when he got the car back reverse didn't work. Is there a way to reconnect the ban without pulling the transmission apart? Or what is the best way to fix this?
It wont go in to drive and found throttle leaking air I switched it but I have to rev it up to like 5 rpm in Drive to get it in first. Then it rides fine until I put it in park or reverse not as bad . Im guessing valve body and solenoids.
hi, where's the transmission fluid filter!?
richi535 minute 24:30...
Hi there . I have used your videos a couple of times...thanks alot for that. I own now a 2.8vr6 galaxy and im wondering About the transmission 09a . Besides the black cover for the solenoids i do also have underneath a black cover....whats behind that ? I have searched and searched but no luck at all . Please...please let me know if you got a ckue
It's just a skid plate. It protects the transmission from objects that might hit it and damage it.
@@AutomaticTransmission ahhh okey. Didnt wanted to unscrew and se IF there was some sort of spring and ball . Mann youre god at your job. Did the 4t65e myself once...you made it look easy 🤣 ( ot did ran after though )
Hello,
Pls I need your help.i have an 02 VW Bora with an 01M auto transmission.it has only 89990km on it. It recently started to leak AFT from the opening between the engine and the gearbox. Checking it revealed the torque converter seal was bad. The gearbox was removed and a new seal installed. Fresh ATF was poured in and the leak was fixed. I took the car for a test drive, it was just fine. Went to a car wash, washed the car and on my way home, the car started acting up. It won't move on drive, and reverse. Prior to the seal replacement, the car was scanned for codes and 01192 was found. This was cleared after the seal change out and the code hasn't returned again but the car won't move in drive or reverse. Pls what can I do? This is the second gearbox I am using for this car with very little mileage (
Hi. I have troubles with a VW T4 Automatic gearbox. It only shifts gear reverse and 1 and 2 forward. It never gears up to 3:d and 4:th gear. Any idea what it can be? Regards Kjell from sweden. Btw: Very good video :)
Thank you for this video and your expertise on this hard to find subject.... which rebuild kit do you personally like to use? The Jatco master rebuild kit looks like it has EVERYTHING! I would like to know what you think. Again awesome video....VERY informative. I like your saying, " we like to have fun with transmissions....but only once.":-)
Which of those 3 is the output speed sensor? I got code p0722
Hiram, I love love love your videos. Thank you so much for uploading them. Can you recommend a good place to get parts? In fact, I need parts for the 09A itself.
He mentions in the video where the source the speed sensors. I would assume you can start with those suppliers.
Not all GNZ trans are the same code 09A?
Hello! I have the same box on a VW Bora 131 hp. The problem is that 4 and 5 are slipping. The discs have been replaced (but without the steel discs), and the selenoids are new. Unfortunately, the problem remained. please help
maybe the preassure akkumulator ????
Hello Hiram. I like so much you channel and this video. I would like to hear you speaking spanish. Regards from Mexico.
