    One strategy I really enjoy using when playing as a bad guy, is using the lady of the lake
    on another bad guy and telling everyone that they are a bad guy.
    That creates a staged conflict between us, in which we accuse each other, leading the good guys to believe that one
    of us is a good guy, and the other is a bad guy! The player who comes out of this with everyone's trust
    can then backstab the others at the finish line, earning the bad guys a sneaky victory!
    This strategy works best when used sparingly, because if your group is familiar with this technique,
    it might just lead everyone to suspect both players of being bad guys. Even so, it is one of my favourite
    strategies just because of how confusing it is!

    when we play, we usually DO NOT take all the people from the first mission if it succeeded because the second time you have to add ONE more person in and if it fails you dont know if there was a spy in the first mission or the new person who has just been added.
    We generally try to mix the team a bit taking 1 or 2 people from previous missions to over lap

    Whenever I'm in the situation where I'm bad and there is another bad on the mission, to avoid getting a double fail I say something like "I know I'm going to pass this mission" or "I know this mission will pass". It floats over the radar of everyone that's good usually but if the other bad is smart he will know you're voting succeed and will fail the mission for the team.

      Not the best thing to do. It's better to have a predetermined "fail order." The one I've seen most is Oberon>vanilla spy>assassin>Morgana>Mordred. Although if you want something foolproof, I reccomend clockwise starting with king.

    Because of that coordination, both times everyone was thinking "man, only 1 fail card, so it must be that there is only 1 spy among that number of people", then they would pick and choose between us which to take to the last 2 missions.
    I mean, it's pretty simple to do even with complete strangers. Say the card you're gonna pick, and you're good to go.

  • @Y0uWinY

    Strategy to fail the first mission with a 5 players game.
    If you are not the leader, but the leader picks you, you can fail it and blame it on the leader. Say that it was his plan to put the blame on you.
    On the next mission, 3 players will need to go, they can't risk not pick either of you because that is almost a 100% fail, since one of you is the good guy and the other is not. (Try to convince people it is almost not possible to pick 2 bad guy cause of double fail on a 2 players mission). So they can either choose to take a 100% chance to fail the second mission or choice either one of you which is 50, 50. No matter what happen, try to accuse the other person, and don't give yourself up too much during voting. You pretty much get the second mission on your favor unless he is a Merlin. If the next leader is your partner, then you pretty much got it.

    • @essennagerry

      @jonaskoelker 8 лет назад +2

      +Xiaoyu Duan - I haven't played Avalon, but I would guess that the way for a Generic Good Guy to protect Merlin would be to just a bit too confidently make claims that are somewhere in the plausible-to-credible gray area-that is, give a fake cue that *you* are Merlin that is subtle enough to be believable but unsubtle enough to (1) be picked up on; and (2) portray you as Merlin.
      I wonder if the overconfidence will get you mistaken for being a Generic Bad Guy, but if you simultaneously get established as a credible Good Guy Of Some Kind perhaps not. Hmm, interesting...

    About always picking m1+1 (the first quest plus one more player), if someone has offapped (approved when not on the mission) the mission when not hammer, or an any other way resigned as spy, then you never put them on mission one. M1 is the most likely mission to float (succeed with spies)

    It can also be a bit more abstract. Say, you're team leader, and you pick yourself and another spy for the mission. Only 1 fail-card is required. Now, again, without communicating a single word, without looking at each other, what cards do you two play? If there are no earlier votes to default to, you could generalize the principle that team leader is the one taking action. The another, non-leader spy is just along for the ride, so he should pick "succeed", while you pick "fail".

    It's a rather simple application of game theory, Schelling point in particular. If you don't feel comfortable using it, or you don't trust that your teammates can think it through during the game, it probably doesn't work. Myself, I play this game usually with people studying at university, so they are bright and old enough so this kind of coordination happened spontaneously and pretty much automatically even at our first game. With younger players it might not work as well.

  • @gJonii

    Played The Resistance for the first time yesterday. Played twice as a spy, 5 players, 2 spies. 2 spies got together in team 3 times, and we coordinated results of every single of those(We made a deal that I would be the one to play fail cards, except once, first 2 player mission, we had to give it a pass because we couldn't risk 3 player mission where they pick neither of us). I dunno if it's against the rules or something?

  • @samplautz5586

    Addressing the double fail, here is a guaranteed way to never get it: Start from the leader and go clockwise. Whichever spy is first in that circle, they fail the mission. If the leader is a spy, they do it

    • @konstantinstepanov5461
      @konstantinstepanov5461 3 года назад

      yeah but whats the point on agreeing on the system that everyone will use? I mean unless you agree with just 1 person and hope for a low low chance that both of you get evil cards. The whole point is that there is no secret way of communicating or agreeing before hand, so you and your evil partner need to play a bit of a game of telepathy.

  • @gJonii
    @gJonii 11 лет назад +3

    Say, I'm playing with A, B, C and D. I'm spies with A. On the first mission, B and C go. Then on the second mission, A, B and C go. Mission fails. So obviously we both know A played fail-card. Next, for some reason, we have me and A for the next mission. Without communicating a word with A, without ever looking at his general direction, what card do I pick, and what card does A pick?
    If you answered "obviously A picks "fail" and you pick "succeed", you're getting the idea behind this.

    • @samplautz5586
      @samplautz5586 5 лет назад

      How I play it is the closest person to the leader going clockwise from the leader is the one who puts the fail card

    • @essennagerry
      @essennagerry 4 года назад

      Ok so if me and A are the bad guys and A is very strongly suspected and we both get picked for a mission I should play succeed? And if A plays succeed too, could I just spin it as "A is trying to mask what happened before and appear as a good guy!"

    You don't know for sure that the first spy is going to pick success. Unless you have play with this person before. If I was the second spy I wouldn't know if you are going to put a fail or success because of that statement, because I would say that statement too and put down a fail card. Which is why with two spies on the same team will usually end up with 2 successes.

    You seem to be missing the point of this method of communication. As I said, it's elementary application of Schelling point. Being familiar with the concept helps a lot, but I've used it with people I assumed were bright enough to spontaneously invent the same concept. It's honestly very difficult to be caught using it, because most often you don't even need to say anything for it to work. I'll give some examples just to illustrate how it might go down

    It's much like poker, except this time, you are not trying to bluff at all, but rather try to be co-operative. So understanding smile and nod at the right moment "yeah, from what we have now we can work out who should defect and who should play succeed card" goes a long way. Of course, you can try blunt methods like making statements such as "I hope you guys aren't playing a fail card on me now!!" or "As a resistance member, I'll play succeed!" just to make sure.

  • @gJonii
    @gJonii 11 лет назад

    General educational background + looking at their face "how overwhelmed are they?" during their spi-time is enough, and I wouldn't really say knowing that much about a person warrants saying "I know them".
    I don't think I have ever seen anyone actually be caught out communicating and coordinating their votes on 2-spy mission. Closest thing was when I, as a spy, managed to raise suspicions on the resistance member, that his statements "looked suspiciously much like coordination"

      This one time I was playing with two brothers, I was one of the bad guys and knew they were both good, one got accused a lot though… the other one, before voting for a mission with his brother in it, gets us all to be quiet for a moment and says "listen… _I know my brother…_ I know he's bad! I can just tell!" Thankfully the group found that funny so I didn't have to hold in my laughter hahaha. 😂

    You can't discuss information outside of the whole group. That is cheating to the max, and if everyone did that the resistance would win.
    Also, there should ALWAYS be 1 failed card in every mission, never 2, unless it is the mission that needs two fails. If there are ever 2 spies on a mission it means the resistance is playing the game wrong.

    • @essennagerry
      @essennagerry 4 года назад

      How can the resistance prevent it except if they both play a success card? They can't directly discuss it obviously, so how could they tailor it so there's always only one failed card? What if the king picks two bad guys in the mission and it's just the first or second round?

  • @louiswouters71
    @louiswouters71 9 лет назад

    I think you are playing it wrong. I have seen multiple people doing this, but when I play it with friends, the votes are secret. We throw them on one pile and the leftover votes on another pile. We then only see how many approve votes there are, but we don't see who approved the mission.

    • @louiswouters71
      @louiswouters71 9 лет назад

      I looked it up and you are right, I still suggest you try it out. It really adds another layer of stategy to the game. For instance of there is all reject votes this indicates that evil doesn't want this team so they sometimes should vote approve to an all-good team to mess up the vote count without reaching a majority.
