Thanks, great update. I have a theory why the statues have axes, not swords. I think it's to show the Northman influence on Gondor which was promoted by the builder, Romendacil II. On the Bayeux Tapestry, which Tolkien mentions in Letter 211, both Harold and the Norman Count Guy hold axes as symbols of authority.
