  • In this video I perform the fall work on my Bloodgood Japanese Maple called 'The President'. A tree that was collected from my garden in 2018, potted for the first time in the spring of 2021. This tree has been under development for three years and in this short period has moved from a stump in the ground to development of secondary ramification with short internodes thanks to a combination of defoliation and hedge pruning. In this video I discuss how to continue developing the tree while at the same time fostering short internodes and additional ramification.

Funny Rafi, I was going to PM you tonight and say when is your next video. I guess my tree can be called the First Lady eh! Nice work I feel like I prepped my tree correctly for spring, all went well in my trimming as well. She is tucked away and well winterized. Thanks.

I tried wiring on Japanese Maple in the fall, and many of the thin branches (annual growth) didn't wake up in the spring, although the tree stays in a shelter all winter, where the temperature doesn't drop below -3C. Maybe this works only with two-three years growth?

I think the problem is with the fact you let the tree experience freezing conditions. The two key factors here are 1, not let the tree experience freezing and 2, do this work at the right time. That is, before the tree is dormant but after it reabsorbed nutrients from the leaves and you safely defoliated it. I wire twigs that grew this year and never had problems.
