I was a boxer (amateur) for personal training. I went to the gym three times per week to work out. This video is correct. Street thugs constantly came into the gym wanting to fight the toughest boxer. The rhetoric about how the boxer will now face a real fight still makes me laugh. We would focus on body shots which meant no knockouts but provided for real punishment. Most did not last one 3-minute round before giving up. You cannot learn self-defense skills from the Internet and video games. It takes hard work, training, good timing, and sometimes a bit of luck.
You might be the toughest street fighter on your block, but if you only fight weaker opponents, you will not improve. In the gym, our goal was to spar with tougher opponents so that we were constantly learning and improving. At the same time, we took time to train with weaker opponents to help them improve. Teamwork and friendships from the gym can last a lifetime.

I only ever fought in amateur fights, and had the chance to spar against a professional once. It's an experience every person who trains martial arts should try once in their lives.
I fought 1 minute against the trainer of the most celebrated boxing pro in my country, and I'll never forget how his hands just teleported to my face with no path inbetween. They went from his guard to my face like whiplashes.

Yeah, I explain this to people I know. I started training CrossFit years back and a friend i went to school with was a pro boxer and CrossFit trainer, he offered to train me, I took the offer. He then offered sparring and told me I had a good build for a fighter so I accepted..our first week sparring I felt like a child trying to be mad at an adult and the adult just holding my forehead with their palm..the way his fists moved and his body and head..his fists were in my face faster than I could even process all while positioning himself in a way to minimize chances of being hit 😅 realized I had a long way to go that day

There's still rules in sparring. Usually the Dutch are the ones training 100% power in Kickboxing. If you're Boxing/sparring it's about technique, distance and strike choice but power needs to be controlled, save power shots for the heavybag. That's what helps you grow in sparring and reduces injuries for training partners. Leave ego bs at the door.

Having always been "the tall kid" I got my ass kicked a whole lot back in school. My mother took sympathy on me, and I took martial arts for a couple of years. It didn't make me into any kind of badass, I still got my ass kicked a lot, but at least had learned ways not to get hurt as bad. So, long story super short one of the schools I was in was Kim Brothers Karate, and the under 10 year old son of one of them was there one day while doing sparring for "belt up" considerations. Our class being one of the lower ones were often after the higher belt expo and the master overheard me saying something about the child being too small to hurt someone of my stature. Let us just say that in a couple of quick moves (he didn't actually touch me) it became quite evident just how wrong I was.

And it doesn't have to be about fighting. You can tell a young person all about your experience, show them that they're fkng up (along with how to avoid the inevitable pain that WILL come from that mistake), but it will still take the young person having to go through it themselves in order for them to learn.

Professional fighters are trained, conditioned, hopefully disciplined, and stronger than any walking man on the sidewalk, I understand, I run 3 Miles, and then 3 miles back. Do sit ups, push-ups, and regular exercising with weights daily. So when people try to contend, or contest with a truly trained professional athlete, the outcome is usually the person that is physically inclined to outperform you. This means that if you attempt it, the repercussions will truly embarrass you.

Jack Dempsey warned Hollywood stars that wanted to fight him that once in the ring his instincts would kick in and he would attack them without mercy, that he would try to kill them. There was no off switch inside the ring for him. These highly trained professional fighters are assassins. You willingly get in the ring with them and you have accepted that you will be punished and you could get hurt or even die. I disagree with Joe Rogan. There is no taking it easy on an opponent when they step in the ring.
