- Hey Gang! We went round and round on what to do with this wall, and we searched and searched. Ended up finding WBDoors.com and they have been awesome. Like we said great customer service and as you can the doors themselves are high quality and function perfectly. These are going to look great installed and painted. Inspection is passed! Respectfully, your WBDoors access doors should be hinged at the top and you can then install a spring loaded cam lift making it more like a gas loaded hatch that lifts the door out of the way towards the ceiling eliminating ever needing to clumsily remove the door from a ladder and getting it dinged up or having dirty fingerprints on the finished wall or ceiling paint you choose.😇

Yeah, those are going to be really awkward to remove coming towards you whilst you up a ladder. Would be ideal if hinged upwards on a gas strut.
Yeah. I was going to write a comment for this. It would be much more awesome to have a hatch that opens up, like a truck cover hatch. Plus you'd have less rick of a hatch accidentally falling/tilting open partially if the walls were to vibrate due to loud music, slamming doors, or even gusty winds.
i agree 100% too, those access doors were not designed for being installed in that fashion at such a high height, at floor level ok. imagine having to climb the ladder, push it open and unclip it, then having to descend the ladder while holding the door above your head, then climbing back up to access the space with the door blocking the ladder rungs.

I strongly recommend against a black floor for your garage. It has a much MUCH bigger impact on how bright the interior will be than you'd think. (It's literally an exponential effect).
The reason is that light bounces off the floor, and back onto the ceiling (often several times), before bouncing onto your work area. This gives illumination that is both brighter and more even. If your floor is black, you get none of those bounces, and it'll (a) take a lot more illumination an energy to light your space, and (b) the illumination will be much more harsh, with sharp shadows. You may find it less pleasant, and it'll be harder to work in.
Plus dark floors look SO much dirtier than light floors
I have to agree with you Tim exclamation point it's much different than the LED lighting bouncing off of the drywall on the ceilings and it would probably caused a lot of eye strain while working in the shop.
Don’t do it! I worked in theatre for many years. There is a reason the floors are all black. They absorb light and prevent weird reflections and light bouncing in weird ways. Exactly what you don’t want in a shop as the original poster said. And they will never BE black. The minute someone walks on them they will forever be dirty. There is a reason we repainted the floors every 12-18 months.
I concur. PLEASE reconsider. You would also have a hell of a time finding little pieces of stuff you drop on the floor.
Lol, does anyone look at inspo photos? Black epoxy garage floors (with flecks) is kinda common and looks just fine? Looks pretty bright in all the photos... Also, Jordan's workshop-style garage is going to be VERY brightly lit...like a mechanic's workshop, blinding.

1:06 that side by side refrigerator right up against a wall will make it very difficult to open that left side door. Was that just placed like that as part of rendering, or was it like that on the plans? There has to be a decent gap between that refrigerator and the wall, maybe around three inches. And to get that door open fully, you have to also account for how far the handle sticks out in front of the door, because the handle would then be the first thing hitting the wall while trying to fully open that door.
@@stevebabiak6997 Some CG renderings are not exact as far as spacing. Appliances especially don't allow for gaps, depends on the software you're using. I think they know the fridge will need spacing, although some newer refrigerators require zero clearance for door opening

I second the comments against using black for the epoxy floor. If you’ve ever been in a room with a black floor, it literally sucks-up all the light and gives the room an odd “feel”. In addition, if you drop anything small like a screw, good luck finding it on that black floor. I’d highly recommend a light grey with flecks.
I somewhat disagree, I have 3/4 inch rubber mats on my apartment "workshop" floor, and it is much better than the reflectivity of the laminate flooring or lighter mats I had. It reduces the glare from the 10 000 Lumens of lighting in a 120 sqr ft room with white walls.
Amazing rendering. One piece of advice: don't have the refrigerator next to a perpendicular wall. The door won't open 90 degrees because the handle will hit the wall first.
And that means you won't be able to pull the shelves out easily for cleaning. We made that same mistake in our reno and are now living with it. We have to pull the fridge out every time we want to remove the shelves.
This is by far the most frustrating thing in my whole house
I went with a black floor with white flakes in my shop, and i absolutely hate it. Just like the other comments say, it makes weird shadows and horrible lighting effects. I'm having it redone white with black flakes after the holidays.
Those access doors would be awesome, if they added gas struts, so they lift up towards the ceiling and not have to remove the door.
Your project looks great. A note for your viewers, your build is being filmed for your blog and if Jordan ever sells the house the new owner can see what is under the walls. When I bought a new house in Las Vegas, I actually went to the job site and took photos during framing. In addition, i received a book of contact numbers of with all the trades that worked on the house including original paint codes, etc. Not that I am going to sell the property, I can provide the new home owner all the specifications and photos so they know what is actually under the drywall. Your followers might want to do the same.

I would refrain from any type of black flooring. Really recommend going with a light gray or tan or matte white. Love the video!
If you drop a small screw or any other items it is hard to find on a black floor. Tan or light gray floor please
I've done 3 garage floors, Grey and tan. With and without the flecks and the grip coating. Def want the grip coating.

** Jordan has grown so much since the beginning of this stud pack journey.. These are Forever Life Skills that he will have for the rest of his life and he will always be able to take care of himself. Problem solving and Making Decisions are some of the hardest things in life to learn and are so detrimental to success. The building & contractor skills sets are a plus for certain, render themselves useless without the ability to problem solve & make clear decisions. Just a mom here, just noticing these things and it made me smilie when he walked in front of the camera and started talking with all that confidence.! WAY TO GO JORDAN!!
Video rendering is great. The only thing I would recommend is not having the fridge right besides the wall. We used to have that and could never fully open the fridge door. When we remodel we placed a narrow pull out pantry (for cans/sauces etc) and then had the fridge. Helped create the space to have the fridge door fully open.
As a roofer, I've seen roof decks ruined by small leaks that went un-noticed because of spray foam on the underside. If you can't see it, then you don't know to have it fixed. Eventually the deck rots over a large area and the repair is not fun. BTW, if you ever want to see a nice cutaway view into an ant colony, that's where you'll find it 🙂
If possible I’d install access panel up side down. (Not like tailgate but like SUV back door). I think it will be easier access and door will be out of the way.
I love how you explained everything with the walls. I’m an electrician and I had to explain to the “framer” how to drop the ceiling so we would have an even space for a bathroom fan & lights. He did his best, and I rolled with what they gave me. Sorry home owner I tried. They are trying to save money 😂😂

Just one detail I noticed that a lot of home builders miss is the fridge being placed right against the wall. Depending on what fridge you get, if you try to open the left side it will only open half way before the handle hits the wall. Just an FYI. Keep up the great work!

I had assumed there would be a bedroom in the apartment above the garage, but I didn’t see one in the animation. If not, how about a fold down Murphy bed on the outside wall beside the bathroom? Could surround the bed with nice cabinets and maybe some bookcases for storage, books and Knick-knacks.
The 3-D visual was awesome. And as a traditionalist, homey type person, I have to admit, I love it. It's so clean, bright and easy to keep organized. I can't wait to see the finish.

Plus if you are on a ladder and have to take the door off where do you put it? I’m thinking it’s awfully awkward to then carry it down the ladder?
And others, doesn't seem to matter how the door opens if it swings out, from top from side or bottom, all are equally problematic for the person at the top
of a ladder. Latch at bottom and gas cylinder would seem safest as one could be below the door when it swings up but closing it would be a little dicey.
Dismounting door as noted problematic as only place to put it is inside the space you are accessing. Would hate to be the tech having to R&R that HVAC
unit in 12-20 yrs or servicing it sooner. What seems easy when one is under 50-60-yrs old is less so at older ages. Where do you keep the ladders? @@JonnyCat63
And the idea of setting them inside the space? I thought you said the space was for storage? Are you going to have space to set them inside?
for ease of use put your access panels upside down. so the bottom opens & just use a stick to hold it open....easy
Yea, you can open the access panels when you're up on the scaffold. But, when you're lining there, NO SCAFFOLD!. Having the panel opening from the top means you have to remove the panel to access the HVAC. If the panel opened from the bottom, you could crawl in without removing the door.

Hey guys, I only have 1 suggestion flip the access panel 180, so the hinge side is on top. Will make it easier to get into off standard ladder when finished. Mabe some gas shocks to hold it open or an eyelit bolt to hook to to hold it open.

Looking good! One thing we saw in the rendering clip is in the kitchen. The side-by-side refrigerator door against the wall will not fully open. The only way to accomplish this is with a single top and bottom door refrigerator with the doors swinging away from the wall. You two may want to move the refrigerator. Just a thought 💭
I like to leave a few extra inches when a refrigerator is next to a wall to leave extra space for the door to open. Otherwise you may have a hard time fitting larger items inside. Preferably I like to have a cabinet or open space on either side. I have had times where a pizza box or something in the freezer will not fit because the door is in the way.
Tall thin door on one side to store broom, mop, folding step stool and such would be great.

And I also 3rd the comments about not using black epoxy on the floor vs a nice medium to dark gray color that will at least bounce light back up - not to mention dropping anything on that floor - you’ll never find it again!
Excellent choice to hire out your drywall. Like many things, it is a thing that only experts can do well and fast. Slinging sheets, goes to slinging mud, and then the sanding. Thats where the fun ends.

Having been thru a major remodel and learned my lessons now living with "average" amounts of storage, any future build I do will have overbuilt storage in every single room, right next to the places where the activities happen.

Hey guys I recommend spraying the the lower level walls with Bora-Care for termites, bugs, mold. Saw this product on the Build Show. Protect those studs and plywood for under hundred bucks, All natural product too.

Great video. I will probably order a couple of these access doors for my home.
One suggestion from a journeyman carpenter who worked his way through college as a framer and is now a Civil Engineer. As wonderful as your laser is, pro-carpenters (framers) will measure on each end of the wall and snap a line. This is just as accurate and it is faster. Also, framers will not plumb the small wall that sits on your tall lower wall. They will plane up with an 8-foot level or a straight stud and mark the place where the lower wall is in the same flat plane as the upper wall. This is MUCH more important than plumbing the wall because if the lower and upper walls do not line up with each other vertically, there will be a visible bend at the joint between the two walls. It is not critical in this case for the walls to be perfectly plumb. However, it is critical for both walls to be in the same flat plane.
Excellence in craftsmanship can be mastered with hard work and great teachers. You guys certainly have that. Good taste in styling is harder to come by for a lot of people. Jordan has it down pat for sure. His design is absolutely awesome to behold. Beautiful! Can’t wait to see it completed. Love you guys. Merry Christmas to the entire family.

I would flip those access panels upside down so you can actually crawl up there and service the equipment

I would have set the panels to open up rather then down. That way if standing on a ladder needing to access the equipment I don’t have to contend with the door, but let it swing up out of the way. I would also add a swinging bar to hold the door up then fold back out of the way when the door is closed.
Congrats on passing inspection! Suggestions flip your access panels to open upwards with gas struts to hold open. The way you have it hinders access & is likely to get damaged. Build another wall with built in wardrobe & storage plus a Murphy bed. Great 3d! But no bed? No Storage? Would have liked the view of stair access. Otherwise fantastic guys!

UPDATE: Couple weeks back I ordered a attic access door to installing in the ceiling from Williams Bros., got notifications today that it had been delivered, sure enough there it was at the back door. The door is very nice!!! Thanks y'all for turning me on to that access door!! And yes I let them know BIG TIME they own y'all a big thank you. 😉
Put a narrow cabinet like a broom closet on the left side of the fridge. You're going to want to open that door past eighty degrees!
This is a great learning channel, you explain everything in a simplistic way. You can create a video library for any subject on this channel.
No storage? You’ve got to have a closet for clothes or coats. You’ll especially want one if you ever decide to rent out that space. Regardless, keep up the awesome work. Y’all have come a long way from the mud and challenges you encountered when digging the foundation.
So you haven’t been to IKEA? Much better solutions there than a closet which collects junk. I’m 70 and agree with Jordan’s thinking.
@@tyrehester5550 some of us have to travel hours to get to an IKEA. Looking at their stuff online is nice, but some of us need to see it in person to really see if it is what we want. I'd hate to make a special trip to be disappointed.
I agree with the original poster's comments. A closet and some storage is required. Unless Jordan really likes the idea of living in a studio apartment. I would have thought he'd put a bedroom in there, but alas, no... Not even a sleeping loft. So we shall see how this all works out.

Man I'm kinda disappointed about no update on the network stuff. I was really hoping for a proper patch panel/rack to terminate the networking for the house and garage. Even if it was done behind one of those access panels (wouldn't be my preference).
Yes Studpack, don’t skimp on the network. Don’t put it up that high.
Hopefully once the main house is built it will only have the fiber modem and a switch up there. They can back haul the internet with a vlan to the router in the main house. @Studpack did you include an outlet (on generator circuit) up there for network equipment?

You should create a small loft bedroom on the patio side. Leave it open to the rest of the room and it won’t diminish the vaulted feeling.
That’s a good idea. What about a bank of deep cabinets under the access hatches with space for the TV and speakers and clothes storage? The top of it could be even with the loft floor so you can climb out on it to change the filters in the ERV without getting out a ladder.

Access panels definitely should open up with gas struts. But down works too. I use Williams Brothers all the time. They make the nicest access doors for ceiling HVAC systems.

Finally struck me on this project and when I came to comment about it, the first comment I see is about no bedroom.
Thought this part of the build was about future rental income after the main home build. Did I miss something in the start of this series?
Very odd to have a studio and no designated sleeping space if even just for visiting family and friends and not a rental space. Have to pop out a sofa bed every night and put away every morning?
I’m confused on this build now.
This was never for future rental income. The idea of having someone live in this house while Jordan is there is just weird. If you're house hacking to build a real estate portfolio that's one thing, but not at a permanent residence. This space isn't even necessarily a studio, it's just an exercise room that I will be temporarily living in until the house is finished. Sofa beds aren't the worst!

I can't believe I've watched every video and the lack of bedroom didn't cross my mind until I saw the animations. I can say though, I spent a good while living in a studio with a similar layout and I honestly loved it, especially as a single guy and even when my gf moved in. We had everything we needed and didn't have any problem with it. A studio in an apartment complex would suck for sure but ours was like this, a stand alone building on a cool property that allowed us to have a big garden and do all the things we wanted to while living for dirt cheap. Everyone would scoff and act like it was crazy but like I said, it wasn't even a sacrifice to us... preferred it in a lot of ways.

Hope the stud pack had a great Christmas. The 3d rendering was awesome to see and i cant wait to see it come to fruition. I love the LED strips and im intrigued to see the epoxy floor you chose. I was reading through the comments about the black expoy, but its your house at the end of the day and your vision. Im excited for this build and its not mine, but the main house has me questioning what could you possibly do that you have not already. Great job guys and looking forward to the next one.
