Mom opossum calling to babies

  • This mother opossum was recovering nicely from a head injury when she developed an infection in her pouch, which also was affecting her babies with systemic infections. In order to treat both mom and babies, the babies had to be separated from their mother to allow her pouch to heal, and so they could be treated with antibiotics without constantly removing them from the pouch and putting them back. Luckily the babies were old enough to learn to drink formula from a dish and are doing great! Two of the nine babies heard mom calling during their antibiotic treatment and went looking for her - one little guy started doing laps! Hopefully once everyone is healed up, the family can be reunited.

I wondered why babies and mother were separated, and then read your explanation. Makes sense. I've always loved opossums, and lived down South where people hit them alot, sadly enough. Thank you for your kindness towards them and this post.

Seeing this 7 years later and thanking you for taking such great care of them. I know their lifespan isn't that long, but you saved these wee ones from a much shorter one.
    ✨🙋🍃🌏💓✨
    Blessings to you always.

I have a unfinished bathroom and a baby fell in thru the unfinished ceiling , I put it in a container with water and cat food then in the morning another baby fell thru I put it in the container .. then 2 hours later I see a makeshift ladder made out of insulation leading up to the celing and the 2 babies are gone from their container.. It had to have been the momma retrieving her babies .. (Wish I could have filmed that)

elevenplaneteleven mine is an asshole. Ive had him for 3 weeks. He bites me and knows how to unlock his cage and gets loose. So i now put a real lock on the cage. Also i got him a harness and leash. And today i took him out for a walk and he figured how to undo the harness and took off running. If he didnt have that long tail i would have lost him lol

poor momma. we have a male and female that visit the compost pile every night. I have heard that clicking before when I could smell the opossum out there. they both frequent a tree I can see them from inside in. the big male carried off a whole turkey carcass after Thanksgiving so we put bones at the compost for them now too.

What do opossums smell like? I have pair of wild visitors every night (and now babies too!) not sure i can identify their smell. I love them so much.

I have 2 little wild Opossums living under my fence in the backyard. From everything I've been reading I think they're at least 6months old. It seems to just be the 2 little ones by themselves. They look about double the size of these little guys... Do u happen to know how old these babies ares/where in this video?

When watching this, I was wondering if the babies would be able to go through the holes in the cage. I noticed one of them tried to, but couldn't. It did feel a bit sad to have mom and the babies be separated like that, but at least it was for their own good.

What do you do to help wildlife? She saved these guys. Doing this is hard work and expensive: lots of vets won't even treat possums. (And, yes, I know from experience.)
      Be better.

This is fucking awful. Free that innocent possums, right now! Humans have no fucking right to behave to put in a cage! What the fuck wrong poor possums did to you?
    Utterly disgusting

Hey, thanks for your concern! I agree, it's wrong to put healthy opossums and other wild animals in tiny cages for no reason. In this case, though, the opossum was hurt and being treated for her injuries - the cage was temporary, and once she was stronger she went into a big outdoor pen with her babies, and once she was completely recovered they were all released back into the wild.
