Best sleep system. How to sleep good backpacking. Hiking. Camping. Ultralight gear.
I just got back from a 4-day backpacking trip in the Trinity Alps and used a Rapide SL Wide Long (for the first time). Albeit it didn't get too cold - maybe low 50s - but the pad is extremely comfortable and warm to the touch. The raised side baffles keep you cradled in the middle, something perfect for a side sleeper like myself (as well as a back sleeper). I highly recommend getting the wide and longest version if you are on the taller side; I'm 5'11 and had more than enough room.
HOWEVER, make sure the air ports are both CLOSED at night or you might wake up with puddles in the baffles and a deflated pad like my first night.The next two nights were great, and if you can spare the weight bring the pump sack (it's not the fastest nor lightest, but reduces the humidity you would put into the pad filling it manually) or Dan's famed micro pump. It's expensive but super comfortable and seems like it will hold up well.
P.S. Pair the Rapide SL with a NEMO Fillo pillow for the best sleep possible - trust me.

I got the Air Core pad from Big Agnes and had one of the best nights of sleep out camping ever.
I’ve seen a few reviews where they say this is a well thought out system, but it doesn’t live up to the temperature claims, making it WAY too expensive for what you get. One reviewer said he started to get a chill in the 0F lost ranger somewhere between 20&30F.
I don't really care if I'm first, but your videos have jumped up to the next level with this new editing. Thanks for putting our so much awesome content, really hope you make it to the big leagues.
You should look into a Zenbivy system. It’s such a better version of what big Agnes is trying to do here.

Now, my wife and I have the older easy sleep Roxy Ann 15 and Encampment 15. One has a left hand zipper and the other a right, so that you can zip them together. This keeps our air mattresses from sliding apart and gives alot more room than the bag itself. We love this set up. The only thing we would change is making them compatible with a 25" pad. Do you know if these two bags come the same way, with a left and right zipper? When we saw this bag in REI we thought, "Wow, that looks comfy", but then thought why carry all that weight. Love yours and Charlie Berens videos! You guys are my Wisconsin heroes. LOL
Big Agnes uses the survival rating, not the comfort rating. Add 10-20f to the number to get what you will be OK at for comfort unless you sleep really warm. It's been a thing for a long time.
I wish there was a cross between the disco and the Sierra Design Backcountry. I like the spoon shape and larger hood of the disco and the zipperles quilt and pad sleeve while saving space with no insulation on the back top half.
I love the idea....one system for multiple conditions.

As someone just getting back into backpacking, this system has appeal.
Big Agnes Camp 20. Best Sleep Ive ever had personally. + Wool blanket in the foot box, Couldnt ask for more.
I put mine up at a consignment shop. I move around too much, and the quilt locks you into position with the pad sleeve. Additionally, the Pad Sleeve likes to bunch up at the top of the pad if you are sleeping at any sort of an angle. This really needed to be a sidewinder and a traditional quilt.
I wish I had this setup last time I went backpacking. I woke up to my sleeping mat literally frozen with ice on the pad. I was freezing throughout the whole night.
I got mine for 250 from a guy who didnt like it and i love it. For people who dont move around too much this is absolutely great
I’m glad some of these design ideas are becoming more main stream. I’ve been layering quilts for a while and having all the parts designed to work together is fantastic

I think this is the one for me. Three in one , very cool. I can use that also in my Patriot camper X2 tent.
Usually the major downside of modular sleep systems (and modular packs) is the additional weight of the features that allow each piece to integrate with the others. The other risk is that the whole thing is neither fish nor fowl. It tries to accomplish everything, and as such, ends up not being very good at any one thing.
Or you could make your own and save a bunch of weight.
I'm pretty sure this system will not live up to its purported temperature range. But, the concept is decent. I forget: did you ever try the Zen Bivy system? Similar concept but might be warmer? I would be interested in a comparison, if that's ever in the cards. Thanks for the video! Well done!

I assume the temp range is survival. I have a Roxy Ann 20° from a few years ago, and its comfort limit is about 35 in ideal conditions with a good base layer IME. It's stupid that big box brands continue to market based on survival ratings at all, but that's a whole other conversation.
Zenbivy light is amazing, very warm, very light and packs down tiny, two pillows and the whole zenbivy in a 10l stuff sack.

I wondered if you had it already. After I saw Eric's review I began researching it and the Rapide SL 25. I bought both the Lost Ranger 15 and the Rapide... wow. Simply the most comfortable system I've ever used. Buy once, cry once. So glad I got them!
I did a backpacking trip last month at Philmont with my kid with the scouts. I was told to bring a 20 degree bag so knowing I sleep cold I brought a 10 degree bag. Big mistake, I roasted every night. Made me start thinking more about sleeping "in layers" too. Anyhow, probably a good idea Big Agnes.
Haha i just bought those two (3in1 is 0 degree) and YEAHHHH they're awesome. Best combo i've used so far. The pillow barn allows me to use inflatable pillows which were uncomfortable to use on their own (you can deflate them a bit and pillow barn will restrict its movement and provide better stability). One thing i'd pick on it is that i think the quilt sheet part of the system should be baffled and not sewn through (i'm going to modify mine) AND the zipper on the sidewinder bag constantly snags. It would make it even more versatile.
I've been living in there Echo park -20 in my van for 2 winters so far in their town of origin( not gonna advertise this town) ..
Can't complain and super comfy for rollingi around and not getting frustrated. when it's that cold frustration is frustrating..
I just got the Diamond park (15 degree) and the full zip off quilt is REALLY COOL. I wish I knew about this before I bought though. It's my second big agnes bag. The pillow barn helps a ton to keep my extra clothes under my pillow that I kept on top of the barn. The hood area I found folds down around the top end of my pad if it's too warm for that. But it's another wide/long setup for us large dudes.

Hi Dan, lost ranger and Roxy Ann are two trails in the mount zirkel wilderness. The cdt goes north from steamboat to Wyoming thru the mount zirkel wilderness.
I do this concept with my western mountaineering bags.....I use a terralight and a monolite..monolite for the ultra light trips, terralight for everything else.
When I winter camp I combine the 2...works well. But expensive 😆 combined with Nemo tensor or thermarest depending on temp.

To be honest, you could make that setup from most pads, blankets and bags. Also: it's $700! (not bad for a good pad, blanket and pad combo if you're starting out though!)
God damn. $700 for a starter? Im glad when i was living in a tent i was in a warmish climate year round(around 60-80 farenheit). A $20 foam pad and cheapish sleeping bag kept me comfortable. Coldest i got in a tent was when i bought a tent that was too big. Heat escaped it too fast for one person. Taped some emergency blankets on the inside over netting and that worked pretty dang good. Made the extra space worth it and saved some dough.
Just picked up the alpkit cloud cover blanket to go with my alpkit pipedream 400 bag. That's my 4 season setup sorted :)
You bring up something I've been thinking about, and you may be the perfect guy. What would be the perfect summer set up? What makes hot bearable for you? I don't want to hear from someone who likes summer camping. I want someone grouchy about it and exacting.
My best sleep doesn't have three or four zippers between me and getting to sleep.
A pillow case stuffed with the $600 I saved is particularly restful.

I like the looks of this sleep system! I can see myself using the grey bag during the summer months because i run hot and dont need much but its nice to know you can pair it with the other orange bag and get down in the temps. Nearly to 4 seasons considering your inside a tent and wearing warm sleep cloths. Yeah brilliant idea! The sleeping pad "thong" lol is a great idea! Cost is one concern and my only other concern is i dont get why these bigger companies don't over stuff their down insulation?.. It looks sparse which was a problem i had with some sea to summit sleeping bags. But gives me some crazy ideas. I could see making the grey bag with down insulation and the orange bag with synthetic. I think down over synthetic in the colder months would be extremely beneficial and you would still have the option to use them separate. Yes it may add some weight but you could be mint in damp colder conditions. Think about it? Down weighs nothing and synthetic is heavier and feels more like a heavy blanket. But thrown the down bag over the synthetic bag in cold months and the down will hold in the heat and the synthetic bag will give you the comfort and moisture resistance. Might be worth a try. Its probably already been done lol. Or do opposite synthetic bag over down bag? Good stuff dan! Hike on!!
The king of sleeping pad (Tensor) has been dethroned by the Rapide SL. I have both and Ive left the tensor in my storage rack since then.

Have you ever tried a silk sleeping bag liner inside a sleeping bag/quilt? They add warmth and are lightweight.
I sometimes slip the pad into one, making it feel less like cold plastic.
@@kke I've not tried that - putting the sleeping pad inside the silk liner. I like the silk liner as it acts like a sheet keeping the sleeping bag a bit cleaner.

as someone sensitive to certain materials (not medically) and also a hot sleeper, does the nylon bottom 'sheet' make u feel sticky and sweaty, particularly in warmer seasons?
Today that setup pad and bag is over 1000$ so it better be the best
I would personally much prefer the top layer to be a sheet synthetic. the weight difference would be minimal for that layer and the cost would be beneficial as well as zero cold spots since there would be zero sewn through construction
Used the 15* ul in upper 30* temperatures and I froze. The temperature rating is off by 20*. It’s too bad because the convenience of the system was nice.

Where is your Big Agnes stuff sack/air filler (Pumphouse Ultra)? That thing is genius... fills the mat in about ten seconds.
I love Big Agnes design on sleep systems. Super comfy and featured. Have two different ones. HOWEVER they are chilly! Worst temp ratings IMO. Don’t trust them enough to try a third purchase as cool as this is. Went with ZenBivy quilt and it’s much much hotter for same rating. Come on BA your stuff is otherwise awesome !

For $700 I'd rather buy two separate quilts with different temperature ratings. More weight efficient

I was all excited the first few minutes…then I saw the price. My goodness is backpacking a rich man’s hobby?
No, and you don’t need all these products. You can pay a lot of money to make backpacking a little more comfortable either on the move by cutting weight or at night - but never think you need all this. Especially if you’re not rich enough to take weeks off work at a time, you can get by on a weekend or a short week with an external frame pack, army surplus sleeping bag, closed cell mat and a simple bivvy, trangia, metal cup, plastic bottle of water from the supermarket and a 24h armed forces ration pack, and frankly, you’ll pay $200 all in and have a great weekend every time you have the inclination to go out. Everything beyond that is a luxury. Obviously stick to within the comfort (not survivable) limitations of your mat and sleeping bag, the worst of the two is your limit, and if you’re new, add a good whack on top of that and ease down to the limit.

@@TheBudgetSportsman you’re not wrong. A lot of these brands are fashion brands and you’re paying more because people who care what other people think about what they are using will pay extra. (And that stuff is what gets the RUclips views) I got lost in all that nonsense when I was young, and with very few exceptions (Hilleberg, Fjallraven) none of these brands turned out to be worth the money.

So many people swear by the Zenbivy, I think it needs a review or comparison.
I would be better just taking my Hammock Gear top quilt, and a warm liner or cheap light sleeping bag, to slide in the quilt. Cheaper and probably lighter.

I'm currently looking at this exact combination for the last month or so based on its weight and small compressed volume. What's the opinion about the quality of this sleeping pad? Some retailers I've spoken to, say that on the lighter Big Agnes pads they had so many quality issues they stopped selling them. Is the quality starting to get better?
As someone who sells the pads and chats with Big Agnes on products, most are extremely durable, the Rapide definitely is a heavier shell than a somewhat lighter Tensor and there are few issues with welds or seams having leaks. What did get retired was the Axl Air, notorious issues for a lot of folks, had one which held well until a friend borrowed. Think they’ve more embraces the Mother of Comfort ideal and tried not to trim as much weight out and get good, usable r values and plush support which are quiet in a reasonable weight. If anyone wants to get a starter pad, air core ultra, and if anyone wants to invest a little more, rapide sl, and then past there would be more specific pads such as a nemo tensor or thermarest uberlite and x therm.

I'm not happy with the bag so far. It does have cold spots. Disappointting!

unfortunately your probably wrong...they seem to be going in such a weird direction...the tents are just over the top expensive without new innovation. I loved their gear back when the copper spur was gold. Now its more gimmicky. I still love the copper spur though. Its my go to loner now. I'll see in a week or so what tents are out there. I'm going to the sierras. Will I see a unicorn first or a dyneema BA tent?
