Great to hear! If you're clearing your throat a lot - it does mean that you are singing too much on your throat. Make sure you are breathing a deep tummy expanding breath and opening your throat when you breathe in. This will help. And drinks lots of water!
Yes it is! Just listen to the great opera singers - they all use head voice but have very powerful sounds. It's by practicing the exercises and making sure you have good breath support. Watch my videos that cover singing in head voice and breathing and practice them..it takes time and patience too
Manuka Honey (active 10+ - anything less will not help) and lemon in warm water - drink this about 4 times a day. Steam might work too...And avoid spicy foods and dairy
AHHHHHH!!!! The yawning method worked so well and you seem to have the same range as me, this is brilliant! Thank you so much, you have helped me a lot! I really appreciate it :D
Yes this is a deep frustration for many singers and especially guys I find, so you're not alone. What you need to do is do work on strengthening both your head voice and your mixed tone. I have more videos on these subjects so check them out. In the long term, it is a very difficult problem to try and solve yourself, so if after a long time of trying and you're still frustrated I suggest you consider skype lessons. Good luck!
hi there! yes there is a distinct different bn chest & head voice. Chest voice naturally feels and sounds stronger - more bass, but head voice naturally feels weaker and thinner - more treble. If when you 'whoop' it feels open, free and light - it should be your head voice - you'll also feel it resonating more higher in your face and head. If there's any pressure on your throat or heaviness - it should be chest. hope that helps?
#HowToStrengthenYourChestAndHeadVoice #ChestAndHeadVoice #VocalTechniques #SingingTips #TheSongBirdTree #HowToSing How to strengthen your chest & head voice
Good pitching comes with great breath support and good release of the breath. Try not to mimic - maybe try singing a song you know without listening to someone else sing it first - just sing it the way you would and slowly develop your own unique style
I love your lessons. If I were to put in my 2 copper pieces for further instruction, I'd like to see some intermediate or advanced vocal exercises for operatic singing. I'm probably in the minority, but that's the style I'm learning so that's where I'm casting my vote! :)
Kerri, you are an excellent instructor! In your videos, things are well explained & vividly demonstrated. Those videos also covered a wide range of topics in singing. As a vocal singing student I benifited a lot from your teaching. Thanks.
Do lots of light 'mmmms' on those parts where it's raspy and lots of open throat and light 'oooh'...that will help to open up those notes. Try it and let me know how you go !
I know what you mean and yes that would help to make the sound brighter. But I would work on learning to control your vocal mechanism from the inside-out. It takes training. But is better than manipulating externals, as this could cause tension
It really depends. Different people will take different amounts of time. It depends on where your voice is now, it depends on how correctly you are doing the exercises, how consistent you are in practicing everyday. So I really can't say. But if you are practicing correctly and consistently, you should actually hear an improvement pretty quickly, say within a week or two. Good luck!
Hi there, wonderful to hear that you are studying music and might come to Melb! I'd love to meet and help you with your voice. RE your question, a crucial part of smoothing over the bridge is to strengthening your head voice and practicing bringing your head voice down through your mid range. This provides a good foundation to help you mix your head and chest voice in order to gain a smooth break =)
hey girl! thanks a lot for your videos there helping me out a lot. And its really easy to follow. Most videos on youtube gave me more questions. I have one question for you.. Could you post a video that shows the most common mistakes by learning how tp sing. Cause im afraid im learning things wrong and get used to them.. That would suck haha. Thanks for the great help! Greetz
Hi Kerri your videos is very helpful to me. I have been singing carelessly without knowing that my voice will actually damage without using the proper way of breathing. Thank you for the tips. God bless you.
Yes you can extend your range - through proper vocal technique and exercises, but never by pushing your chest voice up and straining. So be careful by taking note of how it feels. If it feels tense it's incorrect and you run the risk of ruining your voice. Taking a slow and lighter approach to extending your range will ensure longevity in your voice
I'm glad that your sister sent me here. I find this really helpful because I love singing and I'm not very familiar with the technics. So thank you so much! I'll definately check out your other videos too. You are such a nice person and an amazing teacher. :)
Ok, I c what u mean now. Right, well the main thing is to keep the throat open - so when you whoop at the top of your range you should feel a great open-ness, try to keep the throat just as open when you come down...might help to yawn and see how that opens your throat and try to open it like that every time you take a breath in =)
Good question! I guess the first thing is to teach kids that they have another option. Show them how they can control their volume, how they can sing softly and loudly and increase and decrease their volume
I don´t know how to thank you. Thanks to you my voice is getting better every time! I can finally see a bright future when it comes to my singing. Thank you!:D
Hi, that is a matter of strengthening your head voice and getting more connection in your voice. Requires lots of practice. Start with the exercise in this video specifically the strengthening head voice one - this helps you not flip into falsetto, and also practice my vid "How to develop mixed tone" - that might be a good start. I'm releasing a FREE course that might help very soon from my website so watch this space!
Hi there! thanks for your kind words. I don't have a CD yet, but I am thinking of making one - do you think I should? My most recent video is about strengthening head voice - How to sing high note with power - check that out - you might find that helpful with your question =)
Great video Kerri. Could you do videos on how to sing BOTH classical as well as CONTEMPORARY genres? How does one transit from one to the next? This is something SLS and CVT methods, especially the latter, try to address, but none can do it as satisfactorily as you, I believe. :)
You need to work on developing your mixed voice, which starts with strengthening your head voice and lightening off in your chest voice. I recommend you check out my How to Belt 1 2 &3 videos. As well as check out my website for my How to Belt package if you want to dig deeper.
Just started watching your videos and I absolutely love them! I was wondering if you could do a 'how to sing' video on Somewhere Over the Rainbow by July Garland. It's a beautiful (yet difficult song to sing) and I'd love to hear your tips for singing it! Next year I'm performing as Dorothy in a Wizard of Oz production and am in need of lots of help!
Great video Kerri! :) Could you please consider doing a video on strengthening the voice at the transition between the chest and head voice? :) Thank you!
I've noticed that some other series on RUclips somehow have all of the series videos linked so that you can be at part two and click on the link for part three. Would it be possible to do that with your series? I like the series and think it would be easier for people to navigate from one part to the next if they were linked together. Thanks for doing this. I've always been a shy and weak singer and through three years of hard work in my church choir, I've finally developed a much wider range!
lol I've been doing everything wrong! I've always naturally used my head voice, but I noticed how weak and bland it was. I never realized how much of a difference the tones and how smoothly it comes out with the chest voice. I learned a lot! Thanks!! I gotta watch all of these.
"Miracles"?! Wow, that's fantastic! I'm so happy to hear that its made a difference to your voice. The thing is when we speak or sing, we are using the same instrument - our voice - so if you keep diligently practicing the exercises, it will improve both! Good work on your practice! All the best for you too =)
+Sapphire Blue Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoy my videos. One-on-one coaching is available through my website - thesongbirdtree.com/one-on-one-coaching/
Yes hi my name is Niecie and I was just watching your video and I was wondering if you can make a video on how to sing from your diaphragm and make our tones more stronger ?
Wow thanks so much for these tips! Dunno if you're still active on this channel but this and the breathing through the ribcage tip have helped quite a bit. Gonna experiment a while more and hope to improve. Thanks again!
There's a lot to it, but you first need to get rid of tension by not pushing your voice. Check out How to sing 101 - Part 1 for some exercises on how to open the throat
Excellent lesson! Thank you! Maybe for the future you could demonstrate the best way to pronounce consonants, maybe using some commonly sung words. Only if you feel there is some value there. Keep up the great work!
Chest - 4:35 and 7:38
Head - 11:05
falseto, this dont head
Your videos have helped me realize that I actually can sing and I just didn't understand how to use proper technique before! thank you so much!
That's exactly what I've noticed about me too
Great to hear! If you're clearing your throat a lot - it does mean that you are singing too much on your throat. Make sure you are breathing a deep tummy expanding breath and opening your throat when you breathe in. This will help. And drinks lots of water!

I am a voice teacher also and really enjoyed this video. Thank you for your great instruction!
Glad to hear from a voice teacher like you Linda!
Glad to hear my videos were helpful to you :)
Manuka Honey (active 10+ - anything less will not help) and lemon in warm water - drink this about 4 times a day. Steam might work too...And avoid spicy foods and dairy
Thank you both, Mary Luz and Teresa for those warm words of yours. Wish you the best!
Always warm up with exercises before you sing. You can do them in the morning, or whenever you feel like your voice has 'woken up' enough
AHHHHHH!!!! The yawning method worked so well and you seem to have the same range as me, this is brilliant! Thank you so much, you have helped me a lot! I really appreciate it :D
You're welcome! Will take note of your idea as a possible idea for future video.
One of the better singing teachers I've seen on youtube: no waffle, straight to the point, good exercises.
You're a great vocal coach, very painless and pleasant to watch

I hope my family doesn't hear me practicing this they'd think I'm insane
Hannah Rose All my neighbours hear me when I do opera excercises...I guess it's funny for them. (or maybe they just hate me ahahah)
You're so welcome
Good question! I guess the first thing is to teach kids that they have another option. Show them how they can control their volume, how they can sing softly and loudly and increase and decrease their volume
Fantastic lesson - just started singing (nearly 50) in my band. Playing mostly classic rock. This really helps. Thanks.
I don´t know how to thank you. Thanks to you my voice is getting better every time! I can finally see a bright future when it comes to my singing. Thank you!:D
That is GREAT to hear!
Great to see you have been practicing my exercises for a month!
Really enjoy your courses! You've so much personality! You should be teaching music lessons on tv.
OMGoodness! You are an AWESOME teacher! I never thought I can sing this high, so easily. Thanks a lot!!
you're welcome!

Yes! Thank you for sharing that
Thanks Tara!
the "a" exercise is awesome. Most teachers dont teach vocal attack. They dont know that vocal attack strengthens the vocal chords, even in chest
jonny cage Thank you so much Jonny!
Kerri, I have really enjoyed listening to your videos 101 series. I have one more to go. You really know your stuff. Thank you.
+George Borrego - I'm so happy to hear that, George, keep going! =)
Thanks for that. I love opera technique and would love to teach it, so it's great to know someone wants to know!
My head voice is really strong! YAY! It's loud and strong, surprisingly, and with that it makes it easier to get into mixed voice. THANK YOU!
Another outstanding video!! Thank you so much Kerri!!
Hey! That's really great to hear =) Am so glad you've discovered more of your voice!
You are truly a blessing~! Thank you so much Kerri.
Excellent instructions. I never understood how to increase chest voice volume until now.

Hi Robert, yes join the choir why not! And yes you are right, you sing an octave lower =)
Hello Kerri. I really love the Whoop excercise. It is rather rejuvnating. Thanks a million.

Just came across your site! Am so excited - it is informative and so much fun! thanks Kerri
I FINALLY FOUND YOU! I saw one of your videos a couple months ago and I forgot your name! Thank you! This really helped :)
Thank you, Kerri. Excellent clarity and technical info.
You're welcome Desiree!
Takes a lot of training and practice. Watch my videos on How to sing in mixed voice, and How to sing without breaking
Wonderful video! Your drills are perfect, and the yawning trick was really helpful.
Glad to hear :)
thanks for that lesson whoop whoop whoop! my voice exercise again!
You're welcome
I so love the way you teach! It's satisfyingly effective. Thanks a lot. How i wish I can meet you to teach me how to sing. :-D

You're amazing!!! Thanks so much for all the videos!
yes if you practice correctly...
Thank you Kerri... Very practical info and I have seen a difference when using your techniques giving me a ray of hope!
Glad to hear Jeff!
Thank you, Kerri. That was great, always wanted exercises to help my mix/head voice. Would like a tutorial on tongue rolls exercises. Thank you.
Wow thanks so much for these tips! Dunno if you're still active on this channel but this and the breathing through the ribcage tip have helped quite a bit. Gonna experiment a while more and hope to improve. Thanks again!
Thank you for explaining everything.
Thank you! I will =)
Great lesson! Thank you!
There's a lot to it, but you first need to get rid of tension by not pushing your voice. Check out How to sing 101 - Part 1 for some exercises on how to open the throat
Thank you for the wonderful information!
I will look into your suggestion for possible video tutorials in the future, Namrata. Thanks
Thanks for the help! Now to work on the breathing!
Glad to hear that :)
Good job Kerri.
