only if you live in a big city that has a large variety of art supplies stores or costume stores. some big cities have year-round costume stores. i had to order most of my cosplay items on amazon. i was looking for body paint and only found ben-nye at a very small locally owned costume store.
I always buy my base clothes from thrift stores so I can cut back on extra material costs. Plus, places like Goodwill have some weird ass clothes that might suit the character a lot better than something from a more expensive store. The only things I don't get there are wigs, makeup 99% of the time, and fur.
i know this is a super late comment but pro-tip for joanns coupons, you can use all versions of their coupons as long as they are from different sources. for example if you have a paper flyer, email, text, and app coupon all for 30% off one item they can all be used. they have different codes on them so they can all be layered. The only ones that you can't do that with are the % off entire purchase ones. Also make your life easier and screen shot all the ones you want to use on your phone so that when you get to you get to the register you don't have to worry about your phone deciding not to load or switching between sources.
Quite a bit late, but from a former Joann's worker; they can't accept screenshots because there's a possibility of editing the photo and/or sharing which can actually get these poor, innocent workers fired since the system can track if a single coupon was reused several times and during it all, the worker never even knew something was wrong. I actually knew someone at a sister location that got fired because of this. To the system, it looks like workers are allowing customers to take advantage of the coupons. Trust me, it's really easy to just have every tab/app/whatever loaded on your phone before hand. I do it every time. Nothing reloads as long as you don't close it. Even if you've used screenshots before, the worker probably didn't know they were screenshots and naively accepted them. If you get caught scrolling through photos or have your screen boarder up, you'll be asked to pull up the source and thanks to Murphy's law, it will have issues loading. Hopefully this was a good learning experience. ;)
I always get distracted when shopping at craft stores and usually end up buying art supplies i like too much to use but dont actually need instead of actual materials to help me with cosplays.
I’m sure someone mentioned it but I use Cosplanner and it’s super helpful! It breaks down what you need to make and buy, tasks you need to do and you can give yourself a budget and keep your reference pictures in it! :D
Cosplanner is super awesome and super efficient. I know some advanced cosplayers who have been using it ever since they first started and they said that all their other advanced cosplay friends use it as well. It’s so wonderful and like this little gallery of your cosplays so you can go back and see all the progress you’ve made both in that specific cosplay and over time as your skills grow ^^
Zonbi's Workshop Great Video but I'm in England we don't have a Michael's or Joannes we have Hobby Craft so do you think hobby craft will be good place to get stuff from for this cosplay?
thank you so much for making his video, I'm a new cosplayer and I'm only 13 so as expected I only get money from chores or birthday gifts. I really needed these tips.
With an AC Moore, Hobby Lobby, Joann's and three Walmart's all within twenty minute drive, I've gotten pretty good at pricing. But a lot of the time you can find embroidery floss and acrylic paints along with some spray paints, super glues and sometimes accessories and findings can be much cheaper at Walmart than Joann's.
I love watching ZONBIE shop for materials, and getting so giddy and happy about her purchases! HMMMM.... Kinda reminds me of someone who has refused to grow up, and LOVES all kinds of Costume, Model, Art, projects, and really enjoys shopping for all the supplies!!! There is a certain moment during building great works of art, where simply shopping for all the right materials, tools, paints, etc., is a very satisfying and exciting time! Once you have everything you need ( though you NEVER really do) there's another kind of special MOMENT when you're alone with your supplies, and the creativity just flows out of you, and you're all alone, in your own world, making stuff, that YOU KNOW nobody else will ever make! And that is a special kind of "almost" MAGIC!! Thank You ZONBIE for sharing your fun with us!! Now I can't wait to get to work! I just did A TON of shopping for supplies!!!

Man, Plastidip in Canada seems to be so expensive in comparison to the states. It's like $25 bucks a can here at home improvement stores. Do you (Zonbi) or anyone else know where to get it online for a more afforable price? I am always looking to make things as cost efficient as possible! PS I love all of your videos, extremely helpful in my cosplay endeavors!
Hi! I know I''m really late - So in Canada we are cursed with the 25$ Plastidip. I use Flexidip, and the main difference between the two is Plastidip is thicker and requires less coats. Flexidip is kind of annoying, it's thin as shit and you need to put like 10 layers of it on for it to even stick. It's a pain, honestly. What I'm trying out is spraying flexidip into a cup (kinda like Zonbi does) and brushing it onto things, it's easier to control it and the running is a little easier to control. Also before I spray down my foam pieces with the sealant, I apply like 5-6 layers of white glue all over it. It kind of makes the job easier of sealing, but that's just me. Hope this helps!
Boy do I wish I lived in America where I could just buy stuff like this 😔, living in Ireland there was only 1 good fabric shop in THE WHOLE OF DUBLIN and it recently closed down so any fabric I need to buy has to be ordered online. I have to drive all over Ireland just to find places to buy the various things I need for cosplay.
I'm making a junkrat cosplay to! Your videos are so helpful and fun 😺 I will post a few videos on It in the future on my channel. I like to make the weapons and props first
This was super helpful! I’m the type of person that has so many ideas in my head and I think “oh I can use that” and just buy it and then never use use it or I buy the wrong thing and try to make it work (which by the way, more than half the time, doesn’t work). So thank you so much for making this video!

Im rewatching this video to try and help a friend who cosplays. Going shopping for material (She will cosplay as Mei) But that thumbnail is just so amazing. Ooh and thanks for the tips!
I usually order most of my cosplay supplies online, since I do more sewn stuff and fabric is pretty expensive in stores here in Germany :/ like 6.50€/m for a basic woven cotton fabric and about 16€/m for cotton sateen, if not more. Cheap satin is usually around 6€, but i just don't enjoy the glossiness of it that much :/ I got 3.5m of poly/ cotton blend taffeta from Amazon for only 14€ which would have been at least around 40€ in store...
this vid would have been perfect if I lived in America but unfortunately I live in Britain and don't have massive shops like these :( wish I lived over there now you lot get the better stuff haha lucky
I would still plan ahead and know which coupons you can use on what. Instead of picking out everything then looking to see if you have coupons that apply.
what do you use the plastic dip for. I have a question. I bought some crazy looking knives for a joker outfit. they aren't real knives, but are stainless steel, you have any ideas how to make the stainless steel blades con safe, would that plastic dip work. I also thought about dipping the blades in that clear rubber flex seal product as seen on TV. Any ideas?
I was talking to my friends about possibly getting into cosplay but i wasnt sure where to start. i saw this video like four times to note some of the important materials. i was wondering if you had any tips on what i should get for making a reinhardt cosplay. my friends recommended it since i am a big guy. i would appreciate any help. keep up the great cosplay!

Joann's coupons system is my favorite thing ever. I love being able to use all my coupons in one trip
Quite a bit late, but from a former Joann's worker; they can't accept screenshots because there's a possibility of editing the photo and/or sharing which can actually get these poor, innocent workers fired since the system can track if a single coupon was reused several times and during it all, the worker never even knew something was wrong.
