Actual sorta serious answer: maybe the position of a gem determines what kind of weapon and/or power comes from it. Like, we haven't actually seen any other ruby, pearl, amethyst, etc summon the same weaponry that the CG ones do. Maybe a pearl with her gem on her back would also get wings? And a Lapis with a gem on her forehead would be able to pull watery spears out of it?
Some things like the clone ability would be unaffected of course...
There's also some sorta-canon evidence that the stone's position affects a gem's personality, or at least *reflects* it... (in fact, probably more the latter, as there's no good reason why a holographic pico-scale sentient optical computer/AI with the ability to project a solid light avatar form should end up in a particular position "on" that body more than any other, or why it would be different between individuals otherwise.
