Time spent with our Kids, it’s always super well invested time.
The important thing to take into consideration is the water level always accelerates as it goes down because its not like a proportional glass with equal volumes at each level its like a martini glass. So when the lake is full, 1 foot of water may be 10 of billions of gallons but when its 1/4 full 1 foot of water may only be a million gallons. (not actual numbers)

Lake is shaped like this V.
With very gentle slopes at top.
So now, level may drop 30 or 40 feet per year.
Detail topography of lake per foot and some math will show how many acre feet per each 1 foot layer.
But it doesn't look good.

Well said. That's what I've tried to relay when people are saying it only drop x amount each year, so they've got time left. But that level now drops exponentially fast since it's in a smaller space.

@@yomamapwnz because it's not really about climate change. It is about the Hoover Dam supplying water for 10x more people than it was designed to. People were sipping water out of the river, now they are gulping it. Simple as that, really.

I've been in Vegas since 1968 and grew up out at Lake Mead. My Mom & Dad were members of Las Vegas Boat & Ski Club. When I was a kid, the bathtub ring on the lake was only about 5 feet high back then. I just came across some pics from back then that I wish I could share... they are probably from 1978 or so.

@@MrHurricaneFloyd The numbers give you a far better grasp of the scale and quantity of water loss. These videos give a great visual perspective.
People can say there is a drought, or the water level is low, but to see it through your eyes as it occurs really brings it home. The submerged island you bottomed out on a few weeks back, now high and dry, just stuns me. Thanks for doing this every two weeks, spending your time and money to bring it to us.
If water was priced per supply and demand there would be few issues but since its priced by gov there are shortages

With climate change continuously drying up the Colorado river, it's no surprised that the lakes it feeds, like Lake Mead, are also drying up. We're seeing climate change happen before our eyes and people still refuse to believe it's happening.

As a previous 27 year Vegas resident, our family, along with other military families, enjoyed renting pontoon boats and taking the kids out fishing on the lake. This is absolutely heartbreaking! We were there when the water went over the road and would never believe the lake could dry out. Thanks for capturing what appears to be the final episodes of the lake but good memories we will always treasure. New sub.

Gotta work at it. My boys still enjoy hanging out talking about everything. I was real busy working to support us but always had time to sit on the porch and talk at the end of the day.

I was active duty in the US Coast Guard for 10 years and I really hope everyone who watched this video follows the life saving advice given in the first 60 seconds. Almost without fail the SAR cases I participated in where because people greatly overestimated their skills and abilities and under estimated the weather. It is true that a smooth sea doesn't make good sailors but the time and place to learn those skills is not when you have a recreational boat full of friends and family. If its your boat and its your responsibility to make the GO / NO GO call if people end up getting hurt or killed it is 100% your fault, full stop.
Really so true and it's scary out there on a flat calm day because there's so many idiots on the water people who have no clue and should not be out there at all. Getting a boating license should be much like a license for a car at least a car has brakes!

@@frederickbooth7970 which is a GOOD thing. Most, if not nearly all states have no insurance requirement and a few have a boating course requirement for juvenile boaters less than 16 or 17.

This kills me to see this. Back in the early 80's. My dad had our boat docked at Temple Bar Marina. I was 12 yrs. old around that time and my Dad taught me and my 2 sisters how to ski. Memories!

Right now the Lake Mead surface is about 1,041 feet above mean sea level - it's dropped about 26 feet since the last peak of the level back in February!

I started watching this channel about 6 weeks ago. I've sent links of it to a bunch of people. They should have 1M subscribers. There's very few channels that give you what's actually happening when a disaster starts to unfold. This is one of them. They deserve your attention and subscription. This message was not paid for by any party.
The fact that you can essentially have a picnic in green grass where 2 months ago you would drown under 15 feet of water in the same place should tell everyone just how insane this situation is.
And yet conservatives want to continue ignoring the problem because Americans aren't willing to sacrifice. This problem isn't going away anytime soon. People would rather get 13mpg in their city ego truck and complain about gas prices than do anything.
It's not insane. The lake has been receding since WW2. Nobody noticed until the last 3 years.

I spent every summer on lake mead. Jumped off the cliff at gasoline alley! Hit water for the first time…water isn’t soft.
And the Christmas parade!!!!! That was back in the day. Every boat decorated with lights and love. This absolutely breaks my heart!

Endgame is probably something like the Salton Sea or Great Salt Lake held behind Hoover - small, briny and not useful for anything. :(
As long as humans are using it for a water supply, it's going to go down of course. People blame this on climate change but all of the lakes near me have been the same depth since the early-90's (when I was a teenager) and some may actually be a bit higher as they have been flooding campsites regularly every spring/early summer.
When your siphoning water to use for the general populace what do you expect? Las Vegas alone gets 90% of it's water from Lake Mead.
@@Travybear1989 Agree on the use factor. Too many lawns, too many golf courses for fatcats eg: hotels, golf resorts, too much growth allowing non-xeriscape yards and water waste in general. Way back in about 83-85, Vegas muckety mucks said: No more golf courses!!! Riiiiight. They promptly approved one off the highway past Rainbow out near Craig. In Vegas, money talks and sound management walks. They get what they deserve. Karma's a real thing. My mom used to say: " You made your bed, now lie in it".

As the water recedes the lake bottom is less steep meaning a more pronounced drop in lvl is seen. There's no way it'll take a year to drop 20 feet when it's dropping 2-3 feet per week now. As it gets shallower the drop will be faster. Evaporation also speeds up as there more and more shallows that heat.

Remember that the water is filling a canyon. At the same water loss, it will go down faster as it goes out. So much less surface area for every foot of drop.
Maybe people will start moving to an area that makes more sense to live in instead of a desert that gets less than 4in a year.
@@ian2372 in a perfect scenario, sure, but the reality is that if people decided to leave the southwest, housing is in such short supply nationwide that it'd become a crisis like the United States has never seen. Agriculture is still the biggest consumer of water from the Colorado River so residential water supplies could last for decades
That said, new development really needs to be put under microscope in how they expect to supply water to new homes as well as using only the best techniques in water conservation in building.

I spent many enjoyable trips at Lake Mead decades ago for over 15 years. There is absolutely nothing normal about what is occurring now. This is their One World Order Agenda unfolding... Agenda 21 & 30. It’s very disturbing to witness.
I lived in Vegas until I was 27, and I have so many fond memories of being at Lake Mead throughout my childhood. As sad as it makes me to see it disappearing, I look forward to each of your videos. Please keep up the awesome content.
Blame Vegas' citizens for it's shrinking. 90% of municipal water in Las Vegas is siphoned from lake Mead.

I grew up in S. California and left in '72. I started following all the lakes drying up then. I am glad to see your channel. The respect and compassion I see reminds me that it still exists. I find your sharing is soothing and restful. I hope the future brings more water.
The state is responsible. Awful water management.
It's poor water management and a lack of infrastructure improvements since the 70's. A man made crisis because droughts happen but people can plan for the future. It's stupid.
@@chopperdeath Easy to blame the state. In the end, it's people that just waste water left and right. Watering grass lawns, huge farms growing shit that shouldn't even grow there... it's a long list. Sure, state could ban excessive water use. People could, shockingly, also take responsibility for their actions. Not a concept that'll ever be popular, I know.

Ive been kayaking on the lake & river for about 7 years now. Crazy how the shore has changed. I dont fish but I like your lake updates.
Even for me in Oklahoma, it's interesting to see the lake level drop, although it's difficult to wrap my head around the size and depth of the lake. I've watched old historical films about the construction of the dam and the covering of towns that were drowned due to the filling of the lake. But now, I'm interested in seeing what history could re-surface due to the level dropping. Same thing goes for Lake Powell.

I lived in Las Vegas from 1994 to 2001. My fiance and I had a boat and we spent every moment of our free time on Lake Mead. It was so full and beautiful. It's makes me so sad to see this.

Really appreciate you folks keeping with the Lake Mead updates. I lived in Vegas when I was a kid and got to see the spillways overflow in '83. Spent plenty of time in HS hanging with friends in those coves fishing, swimming, and having fun. Who woulda thought 40 years later the lake would be nearly gone? It's amazing to see how quickly the dry lake bed greens up.
I spent time in Kuwait, which was over two years worth of seasons, and when the light rains would occur in the winter months you could see a greenish sheen across the desert. The grass seed is there, just the rain doesn't cooperate.

waatching thsese type type of videos on lake mead, makes me appreciate where i live more, even though i hate winters. i live in the upper peninsula of michigan. we got plenty of water and canooks (canadians) coming over to visit or traveling through.
As the lake is wider at the surface than it is at the bottom, even if water consumption remains consistent the level drop will accelerate as it continues. I'm no expert but given how fast the water level has been dropping i think a 20 foot drop by the end of the year is a pretty conservative estimate.
Always look forward to your videos. My dad raised my brother’s and me on the Platte river in Nebraska. I taught my kids to hunt and fish and they are now teaching their kids to the same. The circle of life. Great video as always.

Whenever people ask me if I think climate change is real, I say absolutely. They are changing the climate every day on purpose. Squeezing us out, as you say. Shut down rain, shut down agriculture, and the population problem seems to work itself out naturally.

I keep wondering if there isn't a leak somewhere, filling up a massive underground aquifer, cavern or something and nobody has noticed.
As the surface area of the lake continues to decrease, you should expect the lateral distance between annual water marks and lower rate (measured in feet) to increase.
