    like me on / cneistat

    and of course / caseyneistat
    this is only the surface. there are a lot more rules and factors and considerations and details and stuff. an education in airline status is the first step towards attaining airline status.
    i ate 7 donuts tonight while finishing this edit. 7.

      ***** I've flown business on British and it looks much better, seats aren't together. That's from SFO to Heathrow though, so I assume AA Transatlantic flights are similar. I was hooked up through a friend, no way I'd pay the $5k+ full price unless I was I millionaire. An aisle seat in coach with no one next to you is 70% as good in my opinion, especially since everyone has personal video screens now.

    • @santiagoqr1
      @santiagoqr1 4 года назад +5

      The egg it’s not “a crap ton” it’s just 100k a year, that’s 8350 a month, that’s basically 3 trips from anywhere to anywhere in the US in one month, which means in a year you do 15 round trips, and you’re set.
      This is not that hard to do, my dad used to do this and he always traveled 1st. I used to do it and travel 1st, but now I travel less.
      It’s just not possible if you don’t travel more than once a year like most Americans.

    100,000 points is equivalent to 20 round trips from NY to LA. Which is almost twice every month to get that done in 12 months. So basically, unless you take a round trip from NY to LA every 18 days or so, it would be significantly cheaper to just pay for an upgrade lol. But, if you are on a plane that often, the free upgrade would definitely be something to take advantage of.

      It says at the end he was not paid by the airline to make this video, he just did it because he wanted to. Usually youtubers have to be up front about when they're getting sponsored (paid) to make a video, so I don't see why he would lie about it. The fact that he gets around 2-3 million views per video says that RUclips themselves are probably writing his paychecks lol. I'd be surprised if he didn't have a youtube partnership at this point.

    August 3, 2019. Doha to Boston. I approached the lady at the boarding desk. Asked her if flight was overbooked. She said lemme check. And then said yes it's overbooked. I asked politely if I can get a complimentary upgrade. She said, go to the gate and you will find out. I asked her if she can write something to the person at the gate about my request. She said again, go to the gate. I went to the gate and before I could finish the sentence about my conversation with the lady at the desk, the guy said, '' It's already done for you Sir''. I couldn't believe it. He took my economy class boarding pass and issued me a business class with seat number 6D. Still can't believe it but it's possible.
    Always ask if flight is overbooked.
    Wear for it.
    Be polite.
    Travel alone if possible. They won't give you business seats for the whole family.
    Try every time. This was my 4th attempt.
    Good luck.

    When I first saw your video I thought, oh no, not another demand for an illegitimate upgrade without a single legitimate claim for one. But, having watched your clear, concise and honest explanation I came to the conclusion that there are some decent and respectable customers out there. Commitment is the operative word in your presentation and you capitalise on it. Good on you for having the sense to actually read the small print and for American Airlines willingness to reciprocate. I was a flight attendant for 30+ years and, now retired, never having to hear that ugliest of ugly customer demands, upgrade, upgrade, upgrade makes me appreciate the credibility of your video.

      +MrLaeddis1 Not really... A Gulfstream Jet like that would cost about $10,000/hour approximately to fly. If you fly 100,000 miles at approximately 500 mph in the air, you'd spend about two million dollars in costs.
      Considering the coach price of flying NYC to LAX is about $500 and each flight takes about 5 hours, you per year would then only spend about $20,000 or about 1/100th of what you would spend to charter a private plane.
      If it was even remotely affordable to do that every businessman would fly that way, but it's not.

    If you fly from NY to LA, you need 100,000, each round trip is 5,000. Math time, 100,000 / 5,000 = 20 (100/5=20) 20 • average of $550 per round trip = $11,000. To upgrade to first unrestricted, $1,500 more. REMEMBER you're flying 20 times to activate first class, spending $11,000.
    This is really useful if you're flying at least 50 times a year. This is how airlines make money.

    As someone who works for a legacy carrier he is correct, you need to commit heavily to 1 airline. I've seen people travel from airport to airport to airport in 1 day. Now there are days where you won't always get these upgrades. Like the month of August, everyone is traveling so good luck unless you are like 12 million miler or something. You can bring chocolate or Starbuck gift cards to the flight attendants but they don't have the authority to upgrade you. In fact they could get fired for doing that, and no the union won't protect them from that.

  • @redcomusic
    @redcomusic 11 лет назад +13

    If the purpose of this video is to teach the viewer about the benefits of reaching elite status (i.e. free upgrades and bonus mileage earnings), then let me point out a few misconceptions on your so-called "list."
    1. You do NOT need to fly a lot. 2-3 transcontinental round trips (on AA, for example) flown strategically within a calendar year will give you the 25K you need to go from basic to Gold, and so on. So if a passenger amasses 13K in January and then another 13K in December, that's not flying a lot. And then with 26K total he/she reaches elite level, anyway.
    2. You do NOT need to commit to one airline. Maybe one alliance, but NOT one airline. So if a passenger amasses 13K from AA and then another 13K from BA (putting into AA account) all within a calendar year, that's not committing to one airline but rather to one alliance. And then with 26K total he/she reaches elite level, anyway.
    Good video, but it's not completely true. People, please read more about partnerships and alliances before accepting the author's list as fact.
    Thank you.

    • @redcomusic
      @redcomusic 11 лет назад +1

      @Winslow09 What you say is true, but you're confusing "a lot" with "a lot of miles," rather than meaning "frequently." When the author said one has to fly "a lot," I'm pretty sure he meant "frequently," and that's what I'm disputing.
      As on my example, one obviously does NOT need to fly frequently in order to reach elite status.
      Understand now?

    • @jerrywilliams9053
      @jerrywilliams9053 11 лет назад

      redcomusic... that's right... it's how many flights one takes and/or how many miles flown in a qualifying time period .. but they have to be "qualifying" flights... airlines are getting tricky and earning more money once they realized that business guys were getting first class for the lowest fare class cost of coach ... I used to work for an airline. I would see guys who's business paid for their flights and they earned the miles. So after earning a bunch of miles... they would pay the lowest coach and get an upgrade to First for around 10k miles... but that's changing... It's a hard thing to do now...and esp with flight loads so heavy these days.

      +- Porscheeky - He's not lying. I have the same benefit with my family with United Airlines. Unlimited flights, but you get placed on standby. Typically for us the first class aisle is more empty than coach, and we almost always get the empty flights (besides the week of a holiday or something) and we pay nothing. We actually have an allocation to bypassing the standby and guaranteeing us a seat, but once we go pass that we either have to wait standby, or pay a fee (which is still less than paying for the actual ticket). It doesn't have to be for work purposes at all.

      Well an transatlantic flight is about 6'500-8'000 Km from UK to New York or any East coast city in the US. From Munich to Miami it's about 11'000 km, witch is about 7000 miles. The flight is about 10h and 30 min. So you will need to fly that rout about 14 times and 140h since the way back is faster. If you are very busy you will probably fly shorter flights or connecting flights after reaching Miami. Or you could do about 100 small route flights.

    • @Ritual1G
      @Ritual1G 7 лет назад

      Also keep in mind, their not the biggest airliner company to fly around the world. They do have flights to bigger and busier Airports but flying to Croatia or Poland you will need a connecting flight.

    • @jamiehanrahan4705
      @jamiehanrahan4705 10 лет назад

      SuperMrgentleman Well, actually, yes, you do pay more if you want your miles to count one to one. There are at least two things he's not telling you. One is that the free upgrades aren't always available. Those seats come out of the same inventory that's available for "SAAVER" upgrades, the lowest "cost" upgrades with miles. If all of the f/c seats are taken up by f/c-paying customers, or customers on "AAnytime" upgrades, none are available for these free upgrades for ExecPl. The other is that for a mile flown to count as an elite qualifying mile, it can't be booked in the deep discount fare classes (G, Q, N, O, or S on AA). A mile on one of those tickets counts as only half an elite qualifying mile. otoh full-fare economy class miles count as 1.5 elite qualifying miles each.

    • @jamiehanrahan4705
      @jamiehanrahan4705 10 лет назад

      Jamie Hanrahan Oh... AND, the "complimentary upgrades" themselves only apply to full-fare coach tickets (fare classes Y or B).

    • @NT-fb6ow
      @NT-fb6ow 10 лет назад

      At the start of the video he stated that there are no tricks or loopholes.

    • @jamiehanrahan4705
      @jamiehanrahan4705 9 лет назад

      ***** It's true, you can qualify for elite status with either "elite qualifying points" or "elite qualifying miles". At discount economy class they are the same. At "deep discount economy class" you only get half of the qualifying points. But full fare economy class (and business, and first) accumulates points at 1.5x the miles. So if you want to qualify in less than 100K actual flight miles, you can do it by flying 66,667 miles in full fare economy. But that'll cost more than the 100K miles in the discount classes would. More than 1.5x more than deep discount? Probably.

    So 20 flights from coast to coast on American Airlines would, according to the prices right now, cost me about 8'000 dollars.
    Yeah, no thanks I can start saving up for a Cessna with that amount of money, or at least pay rent.

      But if you're traveling for business, say, once a month (LA-NY) you'll do more than 100,000 in a year. All depends on your situation.

      lets do some math. you said if you fly 12 times from LA to NYC (5000 miles per trip) thats over 100,000? 5000 x 12 is 60,000. Thanks

      You're very right. I was thinking it was 5000 each way, not roundtrip. Nice of you to correct me.

    Love this video soo much. This was my first Casey video that I had ever seen. Also the first video I had came across for ways to sit upfront for cheap. He has it mostly right except there is a way which I use to fly upfront on all my international travel which is about once or twice a year. Its the goose that lays the semiannual golden egg strategy.

    It's a great video and I give him props for making a few bucks. But, it makes me laugh at the people protecting this guy. This is a commercial. period. It's packaged in a "cool kids only" shiny box, but it's still a 5 minute commercial. He didn't do anything, besides get your attention long enough to explain American Airlines loyalty program. Props to him for doing it though.

      Anyway, I don't care, I love his work.

      His job is to make commercials, he didn't just "make some", and same with me, I love all his videos; but like I said he doesn't make money off these. Even on twitter he posted a picture of his revenue from each video and they all said $0

      It says at the end of the video that this was not an endorsement. Yeah you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet, but Casey isn't an actor. You can tell he's a pretty genuine dude. That said, I found the video to be well made but it wasn't very useful...anyone who didn't know of an airline reward program didn't need to watch this video in the first place.
      And actually, Ali Karim wrong. He makes money on RUclips through ads of course (ads you see before the actual video)... In fact the only problem I have with this video is he just took advantage of something he does everyday anyway to make an honestly pretty pointless video for 99% of people. Guess its semi-interesting for some to see what he does as a pretty routine thing.

    They do this on purpose, and it's kind of humorous. The only people getting that many points, in that time span are either a) people that can afford to travel that much, or b) they're traveling for business and their job pays for all expenses. Why is it humorous? Because the people in the "a" category that have that many points, can already afford to just buy a ticket in first class. Then the people whose job pays for their tickets, usually they put you in first or business class anyway. The rich get richer and the poor...stay in coach forever.

    • @VBGex
      @VBGex 8 лет назад +2

      I have to disagree with you on the part of those that fly for business. Most companies only allow executives to purchase biz/first. Anyone else has to buy coach and only gets upgraded when you fly enough to earn the status.

    So, i did some rough math and I've gathered this. If you need 100,000 miles to be a member of the top tier of their rewards program, and a roundtrip flight from JFK to LAX is 5,000 miles then... One needs to go on that trip 20 times within a year. Okay, then i searched, currently, how much that trip costs, and it's $1,058 on American Airlines. Meaning that, in order to enter this top tier, one would need to spend ~$21,160. Woah... No criticism or anything, i just thought this was interesting lol

    • @alpha12orc
      @alpha12orc 9 лет назад +2

      ***** on the other hand he can fly first class everytime. a first class ticket at $8000 would make those 20 flights cost him 160.000 bucks... so if he can do it, why not.

      Serpentinia Yeah, but my fiancé and I don't have a lot of money right now, since we just moved into a house, and I just finished school, so flying southwest makes sense. You just gotta make sure you check in early so you get a good boarding time, and have a better chance of getting a good seat. We are flying Delta for our honeymoon though.
