This is a description and review of my first workamping job. I had a great experience but like living on the road, it is not for everyone. Thanks for watching!
You made a really great video. It is so educational and upbeat. I had no idea or even knew of this industry. I really appreciated hearing that the 70 something year old lady works it every year. I'm in the senior years too, so this is very inspiring. Thanks for taking us right to the job site and explaining everything so well. Your video skills are great too. I just found your channel. Hope to see you posting a lot more videos of the actual work like this one.
I know this video is a few years old but just wanted to say I’m so glad you made this. I’m retiring early within 2 years. Am going to live in a travel trailer and have been following cheaper living among others. I’ve heard of the beet harvest. Finally I see how it works. Didn’t have a clue. This makes me feel better about it..! Thanks for taking the time. I think ppl will be more at ease with this video...
That was a very well produced and edited youtube video.... Excellent positive encouragement along the way and focused video with a meaningful message.... Congrats are in order for sure
Great job on the video. I was curious about the beet harvest. Discover Channel wouldn't have done a better job of explaining things. Good luck on your travels.
I had no idea what a massive the operation of a Beet facility . So interesting. Great video . nice building for bathing even if it's not done as long as you can take a shower. Imagine lines can form in the bathing areas. very informative video Brian ,great camera work . Now time to go on another adventure. Jp
I'm slowly working my way through your older videos. I've been wondering about this beet harvest I keep hearing about, so this was a really great video, in fact, it really can't be beet. ;) Thanks for taking us on the grand tour.
. . . . . just like the scene in Cool Hand Luke when Luke sets the "get-it-done" pace and tone for those assigned to work on that endless blacktop road ... lead or be led onward ~
That was awesome. SO glad you had a very good experience, especially as this was your first workcamp. We used to live in Manitoba and have driven past this plant many times, so it was cool to see what was all going on there. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome and different video. I'm looking to work/stealth camp next year in London, it will be a different situation to yours as I'm a self employed plumber/gas engineer and hopefully if I pass the exams electrician. I know from experience many jobs come about because of the people you know, apart from nice to stay in contact with friends you've made, the contacts also come in handy finding your next job, just remember to return the favour for this to continue. I'm glad it worked out well for you, and I'm amazed at the beet pile sizes. Stay safe, healthy, happy and contented my friend.
Thanks so much for all your informative posts. I haven't entered the van dwelling world yet. I'm still in my research phase. Of all the many, many videos and blog posts I've seen, I would have to put yours at the top in terms of their practicality and clear depiction of what the van world is all about. Maybe it's because San Diego is my home too, but you just seem to make a lot of sense. Thanks again.
Somehow missed this video until now! Great stuff! This is really awesome and fantastic information for folks who may be interested in working the beet harvest but no clue what to expect. (Like me!)
Excellent video! Love your positive outlook. The showers and toilets worked, and they were clean. Sounds like you had FUN too! Can't wait to see your next adventure! Peace :)
Very interesting the sugar beet operation and congratulations for your workamping adventure living up to your hopes, those outcomes don't come along enough. I lived in Helena, Montana for a few years as a kid growing up and I remember the long lines of railroad cars filled with sugar beets. Wondering if those huge piles get infested with rats, mice, birds, snakes, or whatever and how do they prevent that. Thanks for sharing.
I just found you tonite and I like what your doing here. You have a great outlook and your doing what I only dream about. I'm goin to catch up on some of your videos and I subscribed. Take Care and be SAFE. Tammie Miller
Tim Miller -You gotta check out all his videos. Quality, informative, and makes you envy his lifestyle. His living the dream without being blindsided with "stuff". As Americans we we're on this rat race we don't realize we're in.
After living in a vehicle, the facilities are rough but still good. Like you said, they dropped the ball. Would hope they did something to make it up to everyone, but I'm guessing not....
Awesome video! Your happiness and enthusiasm makes me smile. Thanks for the tour of the grounds. Very interesting process. Time to carry on to your next adventure. I'll be along for the ride :-)
Your video contains exceptional quality and info. I've been trying to get as much info as possible and couldn't find enough content to help me make a decision if I wanted to go for it next year. Glad to hear your remark on older couple. I'm 68 and want to give it a try next year.
This a great video for anyone that might want to try it. I'm sure you probably went in not knowing what to expect. Now that you took the time out of your day to get some footage people that don't know can see some of what they are up against. At best most people only hear story's from others. It was neat to see what you did to make some cash wile on the road. Thanks bro.
Fantastic. Good to know that your Big Gamble is paying off and that your courage has been rewarded! Looks like a fantastic place to live for a few month (even without the goat).
Great review and your absolutely right about the positive attitude. So the shower house wasn't 100% completed I've used state camp grounds that were worse.
First time on your blog...Nice video..very informative..Never knew they had trailer set ups like this and work..Beats picking veggies on the ground for work..So you don't stay in the cold or snow areas, I guess....Michigan here..No snow yet .Watching this at 6:23pm Sat..Halloween..R U a trick or treater Lol..?
Great video! I never would have guessed that's what the job was about (but I had no clue to begin with lol). It might be something I look into next year. Thanks for sharing :)
Glad your enjoying your adventure and thats what its all about enjoying new things daily So you doing amazon till christmas then AZ ? I might do tucson for gem show That's Janurary Got Fam doing it, good way to make spare cash watching booths etc and then New Mexico, Northern AZ, and Utah's mighty 5 Hope to see yah out there :>) Peace
ty for making this video. I heard about this kind of job and thought it would be cool to try it when I start rving. It will be awhile yet but at least I am in the planning process. It is good to know about the differe nt kind of work out there. Great video! It was cool to see what your work involved. Your attitude is going to take you places...literally. Lol. Keep up the good work and great attitude!
Holy Crap! That's a lot of beets! I met a couple here in Omaha who worked with you (Not giving out any spoilers). They were passing through on the way to their next workcamping gig. They said they were not happy that the campground was incomplete. They also said that you guys would hook up again. : )
Thank you so much. I really appreciate your videos. They provide good information for those who are considering this as an option. It is well put together and not so negative. I am mostly a positive person and really avoid negative types of people.
Im really enjoying your channel. I missed out on a van just like yours for $1900. oh well thats how it goes. hoping to be in a van one of these days. Keep this up man!!
That's very cool Brian! Very interesting to see all this different work possibilities for when I retire. Just one question; what are you doing in my machine? 😂 I don't think I'll have much of a problem getting some cash work operating machines. Glad you're doing good and had fun doing that work camp. 😀👍🏻🚐
+Rolling Earth-Ship I totally thought of you as I was operating the skid steer :) I was grateful to get so much experience on the Bobcat. Thats a skill I can take with me. Agreed, I think you could find work anywhere with your experience :)
+AdventureVanMan; amazing how RUclips has allowed us to interact with, and think of people we never met. I'm really glad you did good. You'll never forget that skill. 👍🏻👍🏻😄🚐
I am hoping some day to do this! I have my father, who is a freakishly strong 80 year old and my son, 25 special needs. He works very well and has great health. I find some folks doing these videos difficult to listen too. I love listening to you though. Your obvious joy in the beauty of the earth is a delight. Thank you for your upbeat attitude!
Brian Have you got your location yet for this season? It's official we will be at The Drayton yard and this campsite location this season. We'll see if they finished the shower/rec house :)
one of the most informative videos and enjoyable. Getting to see the operation is a bonus. So as a single person in a van have found that you have been denied a position? It seems since a lot of these jobs come with a site that they would prefer a couple since its double the labor for a single site. Thoughts?
+West Coast Roller I really don't know of any other opportunities to make that much money in such a short time frame....with camping and hook ups included. Hope you're doing good man!
Friend I love your attitude and approach to life as you live it.. Your videos are real and show the reality of Van life for most people rather than the 'dream' that is often the offering. Keep on showing us the life as it really is and sharing your excellent positive attitude.. Thank you Regards Chris
+AdventureVanMan Your video is a very good complement to the one put out by some beet harvest recruiters a while back. Fills the gaps nicely. One observation and question: Based on a generic roadtrip beginning in the SW part of the U.S., the trip to ND and back is about 3,000 miles. Starting in FL would be about 10% farther. Considering average van mpg and $3 gas (just to round up), my calculations tell me that about 1/3 of your take-home pay is used just for the trip to and from the beet harvest job. That assumes a return to where you came from, just as an example. Regardless of whether that math is exactly right or not, 25%-33% is a sizeable chunk to give up just to get there. Of course, this all depends on where you start out, but I used a common origin for van dwellers and it provides a high-cost example. Question: Did you have some type of strategy to make that cost less, or less painful, or did you just consider it the "cost of doing business"? It would be nice hear how other beet harvest workers manage this aspect as well.
Hey thanks. I would not drive to the beet harvest just for the job. I enjoy traveling so doing the beet harvest is just a stop on my travels. I don't have a home other than my van, otherwise probably wouldn't be worth it.
+AdventureVanMan seems like you went to work and kicked butt others went and failed because there fund raisers has made things to easy for them get dirty
That's so cool! I got started after I became disabled. I hope more young people see this alternative way to live! It's so much better than the rat race, materialistic mindset shoved down youngsters throats. Which has been going on for centuries! And look how that has worked out for us 😂
Great video! I have seen on several facebook pages about people working the beet harvest and had no idea what it was about. Anyone that is even considering this should watch this video. I hope the company will use it in recruitment, it puts the job in a positive light...
I had heard so many people mentioning the beet harvest...some very negative, so I appreciate your good video. You did a good job in showing all that is involved. Thanks, I enjoyed and learned from your video. Just curious, how did you deal with propane needs, were you able to get TV signal OK, are there grocery stores near by? Thanks
Glad it was helpful. Don't get me wrong... the 12 hour shifts are pretty brutal but thats where the money is. Where I was in Drayton, ND there is a grocery store right in town. Its flat as heck up there so there are local Tv signals, but I had no time for Tv. Work, eat, and sleep type routine but it is so short term it was tolerable for me. I have a 1 gallon propane tank which lasts me months. I had hookups there so I used an electric heater. Hope thats answers your questions. Take care
I really look forward to and enjoy your videos Brian. Just bought my van and outfitting it now and can't wait to hit the road. Do you use an electric heater with the free hookups for warmth? I imagine butane would become quite expensive. Do you keep charging the solar panel or does the electricity provided by the camp connect to your battery bank and constantly keeps them charged? Keep safe out there!
+coastal455 Thank you. Yes I use a small ceramic heater when plugged in to hookups. I also have a Battery Tender that keeps my battery bank charged when plugged in also.
Great Video Brain. We will be hitting the road later this year and would love to try out the Sugar Beat Harvest. Could you give us a rundown of the hiring process? Thank You!
sugarbeetharvest dot com They send an application in the mail. Fill it out, send it back and you're hired. They let know where you will be working towards the end of summer.
I just found your channel today and already love it. Just curious, and maybe you've already covered it in another video, about how many weeks out of the year do you have to work and then have free travel time?
+Rick jobs Pay at the sugar beet harvest is $12/hr for ground crew. Equipment operators is $14.25/hr. The over time pay and bonus is where the money is! I really appreciate you following along, thank you.
AdventureVanMan Thanks for sharing & happy to hear even seniors working. If you said, I missed it but how many days did you end up working? Oops, maybe I'll find out in your following videos.
Great video!
Thanks for sharing what the beet thingy is...interesting... I too like your videos they are positive up beat.... Happy trails!!!
Glad you liked.

Excellent video! Love your positive outlook. The showers and toilets worked, and they were clean. Sounds like you had FUN too! Can't wait to see your next adventure! Peace :)

+Mark Handler I was bummed they didn't have a very good experience. We are planning to connect in Kentucky :)
Thank you so much. I really appreciate your videos. They provide good information for those who are considering this as an option. It is well put together and not so negative. I am mostly a positive person and really avoid negative types of people.

Brian Have you got your location yet for this season? It's official we will be at The Drayton yard and this campsite location this season. We'll see if they finished the shower/rec house :)
I will be at Drayton again. Sounds like the camp is finished and the office will be in the camp as well.
AdventureVanMan Awesome, it will be nice to have the office at camp. We'll be getting in Sept 25th, hopefully we can meet up before starting!!

Great attitude and detail. Might want to entitle it Workamping Sugar Beet Harvest
Wow ,What an eye opener. Never knew about sugar beets processing, before seeing your informative video. Thanks
I have always said attitude is 90% of the job. You have a great work ethic. Peace-Love
also have u considered a work camper for koa. maybe around glacier park Montana or any where that is a few month season
+vegasdavetv I have looked into it. They usually prefer couples in nice newer Rvs.
Awesome thanks for sharing! Great opportunity to earn income while traveling.
+West Coast Roller I really don't know of any other opportunities to make that much money in such a short time frame....with camping and hook ups included. Hope you're doing good man!

Another great video, Brian. Winters coming and it's time to fly south.

Well doesn't sound that bad, sure seems better than being in the oilfield especially in ND.
+SteelDrifter I've done much harder work for longer. I did roofing one summer for 14hours a day, it was horrible!
Fun to see your great attitude and approach to living on the road! Live the adventure!!

Thank You!

They send an application in the mail. Fill it out, send it back and you're hired. They let know where you will be working towards the end of summer.
AdventureVanMan Awesome sounds simple enough! Thank you for the fast response! Will you be doing the harvest again this year?
No problem. Yes I'll be doing the harvest, probably be at the Drayton ND site again.
AdventureVanMan Perfect, maybe we'll see you out there. All depending where they put us :)
I just found your channel today and already love it. Just curious, and maybe you've already covered it in another video, about how many weeks out of the year do you have to work and then have free travel time?
this is cool
+Stitches Creations It was a neat experience :)
Takes a lot of energy to make the food that the world needs every single day doesn't it?
I would do that I am 63,
Thanks for the video, I am glad that your enjoyed yourself!
Very good informational video, thanks😊
Thanks for the video. I sub'd you. Very positive attitude. Very interesting. Good luck and stay safe.
Nice video. Do you get breaks and a meal time during you shift? 12 hrs.' is a long time without them.
+helmitpeak Yes, two 15min breaks and a 30min lunch break, all paid. They really weren't regulated, I noticed most taking more breaks with no problem.
Great video what kind of pay is normal? Your positive attitude is an asset. I'm now a loyal follower.
+Rick jobs Pay at the sugar beet harvest is $12/hr for ground crew. Equipment operators is $14.25/hr. The over time pay and bonus is where the money is! I really appreciate you following along, thank you.
Thanks what could a person look at in all. The reason I asked is I have heard anyplace from 10k to 3 k for the season. How long is the season?
AdventureVanMan Thanks for sharing & happy to hear even seniors working. If you said, I missed it but how many days did you end up working?
Oops, maybe I'll find out in your following videos.
