Chris I had the same problem. I solved it by hanging a 1.5"x 1.5" piece of wire fencing below the pen floor on chains with a bell attached to it. The critters can't reach the pen floor or birds and the bell scares them off.
I notices you don't use a double bottom when we built our rabbit and bird cages we would put the flor wire on top of the 2x4s and small chicken wire under the 2x4. so all our cages have basically 2 floors under them some we did with both rabbit wire on both sides, but the chicken wire was easier to clean.
I had the same problem with raccoons. They could get on top as well and ate 17 out of 19 eggs one night (collected and forgot to bring them in....I guess they ate until they were full!)And they killed a quail the same way the fox did , through the bottom wire. I put electric poultry netting around an entire area, and that seems to have helped. No other incursions since then.
A few days ago I went out in the morning to find all 7 of my Coturnix Quail just gone. The cage was closed. No damage. Only some feathers on the ground in the front of the cage. I had been using a 2' X 4' standard wire rabbit cage for almost a year and a half. It sat on top of two tall plastic trash cans that was secured into the ground, and had a couple layers of heavy tarp on the roof and mostly covering the back and sides. The quail poop and sand/dirt from their sand boxes went into the trash cans which I would use for fertilized soil for the garden. Whatever they were, somehow grabbed the quail against the front of the cage, killed them, and pulled them straight through the cage wire, which is no easy feat. I don't understand how they got all 7, but maybe they were there for hours. Most likely raccoons I assume. My plan is to cover the cage with hardware cloth so the gaps are way too small and start over within the next month. Very disappointing.
I rehabilitated an injured hawk once, and was feeding him whatever meat I could get. The one thing he would NOT touch was a opossum. That told me a lot. ;)
My quail are starting to lay eggs. They will be 2 months old on the 8th of October. Yay. Now if i can get more than 2 eggs a day from 15 hens I'll be happy
A friend of mine did a double layer of cage under her hutch she says the poop still falls through but predators can't get their paws up in there Your trick maybe the fox will learn that the posom is better food lol
If you're in the country get a big bore pellet gun, and a small game permit from you dnr, then either taxidermy it, tan it and make a liner for a jacket for your sweetie, or a scarf When the electric wire quits working, foxes are smart little dogs
I thought about putting a second bottim on my hutch I'm building. Hopefully that will stop foxes possums and large birds from being able to get to my birds
Love your videos! We will have to do this. Years ago (decades lol) we had to run hot wires on the outside of our pastured poultry pens. It did the trick!
Get a motion sensor alarm at Harbor F $20 It is wireless and the batteries last a long time. If it is long distance , like 300 yards , lengthen the antenna wire , is a fix for extra distance, is what I've heard. don't run with your gun!
That’s unfortunate. I feed my local possum the extra quail eggs. I used 1/2 inch grid and a secondary layer of chicken wire just because of this. I like foxes but they can carry rabies.
Foxes are a big problem especially in places that they have no other animals to compete against I think If you get a fox that comes into your property you should probably kill it because it means there are many others around
I always put electric mesh safety fence around any area with outdoor pens in it. Learned the hard way. rats and mink are the worst.... too dang smart. watch baiting with tin fiol and penut butter on the electric fence. You'll stir up one heck of a stink when you get a skunk
Predator problems are an ongoing problem for me, I keep a baited live trap out at all times and a game cam up. Couple of weeks ago I caught 2 coons and 2 possums. Got pics of another coon and another possum last night, will have them removed this week I'm sure. I had to build my cages very secure from the get go because I knew this would be an issue. Haven't lost any yet, knock on wood.
@@gameboyadvance4256 Bahaaahaa I only have 6 the problem is they either laying on the porch or in the house. Wife and kids spoil em Lol Good idea though!!!
Hahaha yeah my cousins dog is a giant but it don't care about foxes but my little terriers will chase foxes all day long so he gets foxes in his garden and I don't haha
It doesn't matter if they are spoilt as long as they are hunting breeds they will never forget to chase my dogs get spoilt rotten but always want to get hold of something if they see it walking on their territory hahaha
@@kristyw8180 thank you, they dug and dug til finally they were able. If we had been home we could have stopped them. we are def going to buff up our security.
Sorry to be off topic but does any of you know of a method to log back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost the login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
I recently lost all of my quail in one hutch to what I believe was a raccoon. The door was open and nothing but feathers in their sand room 😢😡. Poor little quail, murdered in their happy place. The doors have latches like yours. Gonna have to put a lock on them I guess.
You’re right! You will have to clean up more often and change bedding but personally for me it’s worth it. I am so glad I found this video because now I am thinking to build a “cage or run” around the hutch to prevent animals from walking to the hutch, basically a cage within a cage. I do not own quail yet but I will soon.
Sorry to hear Chris. Glad you didnt lose more than you did. I thought the picture with the fox and possum was kinda funny. I can picture that shot with cartoon captions above their heads. Oh what they could say. 😂 Anyhoo great fix! Thanks for the lesson, God bless!
Hey can u tell me how to find out the age of the quails?we bought them from a shop which claimed that they will start laying eggs soon .It's been 20 days now.. no eggs
Chris pls notice me I have a question about rabbit What to do if the mother doe don't want to feed his kittens he didn't feed his kittens about 24hours now pls notice and reply
I don't like to clean out dropping trays so I choose to just have one cage and let the droppings fall to the ground. but you could definitely stack the cages.
Hope the fox leaves your rabbit cages alone. Years ago I had a rabbit loose a foot through the bottom of its cage. It was from wild dogs but I suppose foxes could do that too. I don't have rabbits anymore but kind of glad that my quail live indoors even though they are more work. Great Video Chris!
Great video as always and I have a question. Have your quail ever wanted to peck each other to the point of really damaging each other. If so how do you prevent this behavior?

JIMBUOY- GREAT IDEA, THANKS FOR COMMENTING!!
add a hot wire to the second bit of fencing and double of the security
Cool idea thanks!
Sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing!
When I was young and dumb (about 9) I tested a hot wire with a carrot. I can still feel it. lol

sorry about your quail chris. im sure you gave them a good life. good luck with your next batch of quails.

After loosing several chickens to dogs & several ducks too raccoons, broke down & bought electric net fencing. no issues since then.
I'm glad you found a solution!

put a screw into the wood and run wire above and below your hot wire it acts as a ground also

Hi, new sub here! My husband and I just got quail and we have been watching your channel for all the great info. 😊
Put you a hose clamp around that ground rod where the wires tie to it. Save yourself some issues later with bad ground
A friend of mine did a double layer of cage under her hutch she says the poop still falls through but predators can't get their paws up in there
Your trick maybe the fox will learn that the posom is better food lol
This is exactly what I was going to suggest - a second layer of mesh a few inches below the floor.
I had a fox come kill my chickens once last thing he ever tried to kill
thanks for sharing your teaching gifts with us.
What about a false bottom with 1” chicken wite below the frame 2x4s??
I Ran 2 by 4 wire about 6 inches down below any kind of wire the birds are sitting on. Haven't had a problem in years.

We put a disposable piece of cardboard on one side to give them a place to escape. Works well.
Get em Chris !! Also I don’t know if most people know this but possums eat a lot of ticks.
True, but also like your chickens, lol
Cool I didn't know that. Thanks
They dont carry rabies either
An offset wire mesh below or build a hopper out of plywood and duct the droppings into a bucket.

Did anything happens with the animal control with your neighbor
I was wondering that too

Probably not a bad idea to get a dog

2 stray dogs took out about all my flock. We are devastated.

If you really wanted to entertain us you would have grabbed a handful of that fence. LOL

@Watson Brixton Instablaster ;)
Do you have light in the coop, do you have a video on it by chance?

Another reason why wire floors are bad news foot problems and predation. Better off with solid floors.

Where did you get the solar fence charger
Oh my gosh how horrible!!
I'm not sure what happened to my adults but the pen door was wide open but got babies from them though
Fox and possums sometimes hunt together. It's true.
I never knew that.
Hey can u tell me how to find out the age of the quails?we bought them from a shop which claimed that they will start laying eggs soon .It's been 20 days now.. no eggs
Sorry that this happened. You might want to do this with your rabbits also. He will be back we have had this happened.
I would probably put another piece of hardware cloth 2 inches under the cage.
Chris pls notice me I have a question about rabbit
What to do if the mother doe don't want to feed his kittens he didn't feed his kittens about 24hours now pls notice and reply
Nice job Chris! :)
How did fox get thru under there...many nasty things could eat your birds...
You can have three layers of cages at this height. Why only one?
I don't like to clean out dropping trays so I choose to just have one cage and let the droppings fall to the ground. but you could definitely stack the cages.
I had a similar problem. Only came once. I'm thinking about putting barbed wire on the under side of the cage

9:04 anyone else thought that was a quail in the tree? 😅
What do you mean by a grow out cage?
We wanna see footage of what he did.
Shocking ,lol. That should let him know he's not wanted
Am haveing lots of problems with them.as they do the something to my Rabbits.
Just make a dubble floor. To have one open floor from bottom outside is not responsible.
Wood doesn't conduct you could have just used nails bent over.
Where was your dog!.....Larry @ Scoot's Organic
Why didn't you just put a layer of chicken wire across the bottom like another layer of flooring?
Great video as always and I have a question. Have your quail ever wanted to peck each other to the point of really damaging each other. If so how do you prevent this behavior?
Set some conibear traps.
Or, night vision and a .22 PCP Air rifle...
Pest problem solved. 🖖😁
A good ole steel trap will take care of that fox. Then the next morning 1 shot from a .22 problem solved.
why are you putting insulators on a wooden leg ?, The wood will be a natural insulator. 🤔🤔🤔
Good point. But it did give me something to wrap the wire around.
Got dogs?....😉
Why not just put on a second layer of wire a few inches lower than the first?
Chris pls notice me I have a question about rabbit
What to do if the mother doe don't want to feed his kittens he didn't feed his kittens about 24hours now pls notice and reply
