Just to elaborate - Wash. DC is north of Richmond, VA (Virginia is where he lives). I think he's referring to both the politicians in DC, AND the (even more) powerful business interests that control them. Glad you found the song, and that I stumbled across your channel (because of it). Don't think a separate channel is needed, but I think you would really like 'I want to go home' from Oliver. Also check out his interviews with J. Rogan and J. Peterson
Added.. (Above is correct), However in West Virginia there are a LOT of Miners, working deep Underground.. They're Very Proud of them, in that area. Sacrificing for Energy. The Politicians seem more interested in Protecting Epstien (minors), then the Miner's jobs, Prices, as Oil and Coal are blocked.. (The American war on Energy under crooked Joe).. Simultaneously Lower paying jobs for teens are being absorbed by unemployed Adults (or illegal immigrants).. While the Government Ignores starving homelessness, and feeds Fat welfare recipients with Tax money!
My man speaks for everyone, regardless of race, sex, wealth or where you live. Washington DC is north of Richmond, Virginia, it’s the politicians he’s referring to
You don't need to be from the United States or understand what's happening over here to relate to this song. This is a universal anthem to everyone who is tired of the greed and overstepping of politicians, government, and big corporations. Tired of being over taxed underpaid and undervalued. Tired of inflation, and working to make ends meet while the rich get richer. This is the cry of the working class every day person from all walks of earth.
... The actual lyrics are specific to USA, but overall and the fact that everyone in every nation of the world is affected by US politics, yeah it is pretty damn universal. Hell, if anything it might have more meaning for the people in Ukraine right now than in the US.
Oliver Anthony is a recent discovery, but a major talent with an important message. Love the sound of the dobro guitar. The rich men north of Richmond are Washington DC.
The fact that you felt like you disrespected him by speaking when you thought the song was over speaks volumes about your character. You are so informed and understood the message of the song perfectly. Hats off for you my friend.
The first few times I listened to this song, I honestly bawled my eyes out. The message is so powerful, and you can feel the emotion in his words. The middle class is being eliminated in the U.S. So many have lost their home's that they worked so much of their lives for between the pandemic and inflation. I personally am disabled and on a fixed income. When I go shopping for food and households, essentials, it costs me nearly twice as much as it did before the pandemic. The Rich Men North of Richmond is Washington DC. So yes, he is talking about politicians and Epstein Island. I laughed when he said Epstein Island also. Simply because of how shocked I was that he said it. At the same time, cheering him on for saying that they need to be focused on taking care of their own people that live in America. However, I have watched over 20 reactions to this song from channels all over the world. Everyone has said that even though they are not American, the majority of people are struggling around the world to some degree and can relate to this message. He is an independent artist, so it's not on mainstream. He refuses to sell out to a label because he wants to keep his roots and his soul. His music can be found on his own RUclips channel called Oliver Anthony Music. This song was posted from a local radio station that wanted this message to be heard. However, this song exploded into the millions on RUclips globally in one weekend. It put him on the map. So he created his own RUclips channel, and you can find him music on other platforms like Spotify. He has several songs now, and after this song blew up, he did some touring independently. I love your reactions and would subscribe to Any channel that you create. Music reactions are fun. Do you have a particular kind of music that you would like to react to our are you going to do music by request only?
Just so you know, in case you didn't.. The reason he is so far from the mic in this video, is because he is not used to singing into a mic.. He always sings to his phone.. It was radiowv that begged him to use a microphone.. He was so nervous that he stands away from it in this video.. But that also proves how powerful his voice really is.. He is so honest and not some fake Entertainer. It truly was his heart and soul, along with his 3 dogs..
There is an older song titled "Sixteen Tonnes". It was written for a low bass to sing, and is a working mans ballad. It became almost an anthem for the poor in Russian. (to my surprise) There are several pretty good versions on youtube. I think Tennessee Ernie Ford was the first to record it, but there is another version that I think is even better, by the Yale Spizzwinks, and then there is a third version by Geoff Castellucci, and yet another by Johnny Cash. My personal favorite of these, is the Yale group. Let me know what you think. @@european-reacts
This is just a friend of his who borrowed a Mic & recorded him. Oliver was living in a tiny trailer with a hole in it's roof. This was spring/summer 2023. He's independent. Records co. offered him millions he turned them down.
"Rich men" is a old-fashioned insult. Such as, "A bunch of rich men trying to decide your life." Washington DC is directly north of Richmond Virginia. Excellent reaction, btw. You understood the essence of the song.
Oliver Anthony is incredible, he’s just a blue collar guy who went viral overnight because of this song. He was a nobody before it blew up, he just had to get these woes off of his chest, and that’s why it resonates with so many. He has some other great songs you should check out like “I want to go home”
In the first day he hit 5 million views 3 days later it was up over 8 million about a week later he was above 15 million views on this video. this dude is my hero.
He's a fellow Virginian and lives just an hour up the road from me. The "rich men north of Richmond" refers to the corrupt politicians in Washington DC (north of Richmond VA). Just wanted to clarify that, and it's worth viewing the lyrics online to get the full meanings. This nation began here (VA) and by-damn our 2nd Revolution may very well begin here too! #AmericansFirst 🇺🇸
As an American this song brings me to tears. It’s exactly what we are all thinking regardless of what political parties we affiliate with. Oliver is pure talent
Was exactly the right reaction. Because it was genuine. Oliver Anthony took us all by surprise last year. He went from no one knowing who he was to the entire country knowing his name in a week and the next week the world started talking about him. I still get tears when i hear this song. The difference in life from when i was born (1980) to just a couple of years ago was dramatic. We are currently watching the rich men (politicians and lobbyists) north of Richmond (thats in Virginia, he is referring to Washington DC here) sell us and our coutry out. Because they and their buddies with to much power in the rest of the world, want to control everything. Which they cant do so long as Americans are free. Because we wont let them. But if they can break America, we will be to busy trying to take it back to help anyone else. Yeah, i wish i was exaggerating. But thats exactly what they themselves say. Go watch the footage from the WEF this year and the past 4 or 5 years.
Please don't apologize for having to restart. When you hear something powerful, go with it! That to me, is the power of not just music, but art as a whole! I just found your channel and love your videos, subscribed and can't wait to see more!
Oliver Anthony( real name Christopher) is a humble God loving Virginian who was relatively a unknown. He began sharing his songs with the public and he profoundly resonated with the Average American struggling to live a honest life. He starts his concerts reading a word from the Bible. He is not owned by the music industry or Hollywood. I think his persona is genuine and people have recognized his rare qualities in a musician as something different and rare.
He was totally unknown until a few months ago. This song made him an overnight sensation. He refused an $8M (I think that was the amount) record deal because he has no interest in being a professional musician. It turns out that he lived in the county where I grew up when he was working the jobs he refers to in the song. If you watch some of the videos he posted after this, you will hear him code-switch-change his ‘good old boy’ country accent to an obviously well read and more sophisticated accent (I do that when I visit my mother). He lives on a large plot of land he owns in Virginia in a broken down camper, but is not from the Appalachian region as many people think. This song hit a nerve around the world! I was actually wondering when you would run into a video that is not complimentary to the US.
There is a difference between being complimentary to the US and being deluded about the state of our politics. This song isn't an insult to the average citizen of the USA and let's face it on of the favorite US pastimes is badmouthing our own government.
I love the pain and frustration in his voice, u can tell he is feeling his lyrics. Yes, music reactions would be greatly welcomed from you!!! Loving your reactions and accent, lol
He's on his property south of Richmond, Virginia. Washington DC is just north of Richmond. He was interviewed by Joe Rogan and he made it clear that he's talking about all the politicians in DC, not just one side or the other.
He wrote this song in 2017. He posted the video on TikTok August of 2023 and refused all record deals. He is neither Democrat nor Republican. This song is about all decision makers. Certain politicians latched onto it the minute they knew people identified with it.
He has many songs that are so amazing, and north of Richmond is Washington where all the politicians and President are. A must listen to is( I want to go home ) Oliver is a very talented and intelligent man and puts lyrics into music that everyone can relate to.
Never heard of him. But his message is supported by millions of everyday citizens that are tired of rich man’s rules & controls. Grass roots people are humble hardworking and tired of crooked politicians and all elected crooked officials.
Hey Mr. European, I love it that you like Oliver Anthony, so awesome, and I can tell that you are a very smart person. You don't need to live here to understand, but guess what, you understand that song more than lots that do live here. I like your personality and your reaction to Oliver Anthony. Good job.
This guy is not a professional country singer he’s a common person like everyone else. He’s amazing. Please react to another song of his “Sober.” It’s so good you will love it!
He made this video with a simple microphone in the yard of his little plot of land where he lives in a travel trailer with his dogs. He's not a famous musician he's just an ordinary guy who happens to be able to put his soul into his voice.
He wasn't a big deal until someone videoed him and posted it. He was your average working man struggling with problems and he only played in a local bar. His line about miners, not just minors on an island, is referring to our coal miners. North of Richmond is Washington DC.
I love the way he plays with words in the lyrics. “I wish politicians would look out for miners and not just minors on an island somewhere.” He lives in West Virginia, coal mining country.
I live about an hour from FarmVille, VA where Oliver is from. I got to see him at Blue Ridge Rock Fest in his first major concert. He also played an acoustic set with shinedown and papa roach when the festival was cancelled. He’s an amazing singer and person. He brings his very well behaved dogs everywhere. He’s also located close to the Shendoah National Park you loved so much in previous videos. A great example of our regions people.
He's bitching about inflation and the politicians trying to control our lives. The line about worrying about miners instead of minors on an island is exactly what you thought. All of us Americans feel this way, tired of working hard and having not much to show for it. He really made an impact for sure. North of Richmond is Washington DC
My only grief with the line is how it sounded like Who cares about the kids, pay attention to the miners. I know how he feels, and I don't disagree, just that it was an unfortunate choice of wording. If it weren't for that wording, it would have very quickly become a rallying cry for both sides of the aisle.
@@GotWag I know because he said so later, but his wording in the song itself didn't convey that. Great song, solid message, just one section where his message got lost :(
Oliver came on the scene last year with this song... He says the American dollar is nothing because, first the government taxes our wages before we even get it, then every penny of our wages that we spend is taxed again. Until it works out that the federal government is getting about 30% of our wages in taxes.
As a read head from southern Virginia it is important for everyone to know we can all sing this good :). I wish but he is 90 miles or so from me in Danville VA and he is as new to most of us as he is to the world. I along with many are very proud of what he has done and expressed.
He’s a very intelligent man. He put his words into a song 🎶 which by the way is brilliant and everyone knows what he’s talking about. He just had the guts to voice them. Can you imagine the money 💰 we would save if not for the politicians. So think very hard when you vote. ❤.
He’s relatively new to the country/bluegrass scene, but he has a powerful message to bring. I love this song and as a blue collar American Male I’m not ashamed to say I cry for America every time I hear this song.
He was offered an $8 million contract by the music industry and turned it down. America fell in love with his music, transparency, message, and integrity.
HAHA, I love how you went back at the end and said " woops I feel like I might have disrespected him there" - What a hell of a choice for your first song react, nicely done. - Massachusetts
As far as you reacting to music, go for it. We aren't here to get an education per se. I enjoy your enthusiasm for what you are seeing and learning. I'm an American. Seeing your reaction to the things I and most Americans take for granted makes me appreciate my country and my life more.
There are multiple visions of America that the world sees. Oliver expresses what a good majority of Americans feel/see. We may project ourselves as the strongest country, yet we are very divided within. Corruption in politics, an island the rich and influential can do whatever they want, and don't worry about ballot accountability. He left out how dead people votes count (vote was submitted after death, and how unregistered / illegal immigrant voters can vote as many times they want in less restricted states.
I have nothing to add that hasn’t already been said…except that he’s singing for all of us. Those rich men north of Richmond are all those corrupt politicians in Washington D. C.
Feel free to hit the like button and subscribe for more content. I would also love to hear your suggestions for future reactions-drop them in the comments below!🙏
This country became a superpower on the backs of blue collar men and women from all over the world. The politicians have forgotten about the blue collar worker, not just in America, but across the globe. It’s time for the blue collar worker to take back what is ours and leave the politicians to the side. The world doesn’t need politicians, just good people making the right decisions, for the right reason.
I love your channel and you would be a good reactor to anything you want to react to. I watch many music reactors and one thing I hear them complain about is copyright strikes. If you watch other reactors, you may notice that they put a filter over the original video to avoid the strike. Sometimes it doesn't work and I hear their frustration. There are some artists that are independent that will let you react without a copyright strike. Like someone else suggested, try some music reactions on this channel. Thank you for the hard work you put in!
Yes, Washington, DC, the nation's capital, is about two hours north of Richmond, Virginia. That's on the East coast about halfway between Canada and Florida. America is a GREAT country, but has its problems too.
Loved watching your facial reactions. This song is an anthem for the working class. It is time the people in the US clean house of the rich men north of Richmond and put in people who actually care about the working class.
He’s relatively new. He came out with this song in August and it’s already got over a 113 million views on RUclips probably well over a billion views on all social media. He’s got a lot of really great songs on his channel. I wanna go home and Doggonitt
His word play on miners (mine workers - always political pawns) and minors (youngsters) is amazing. If you do music (Elvis and BeeGees!!!❤) reactions you’ll have a numbers bonanza.
This song really hits hard. When people say they want popular vote for president instead of the Electoral College, people like Oliver, and millions of others who don't live in NY, DC, or California, would get no say, because they are a slight minority. I think both left and right (Democrat & Republican) voters are getting tired of electing people to office that get nothing done and make a lot of money doing it.
So an American living in California shouldn't have the same say as an American in a smaller state? A New Yorker's or Californian's vote aren't as important as the vote from, say, Arkansas because you don't like those American's politics. How is that fair to ALL Americans?
@Daniel I live in California and I can tell you this, my vote gets Jack shit because of how corrupted the state is. I live in an area where the state never had interests in taking care of the civilians unless it was for their exclusive interests. It’s resulted in our region to being neglected, in fact, we’re considered backwards compared to the rest of the state. Most of the damaging wildfires happen in our region, to keep those in SF happy they are doing good by climate change activist standards, not listening to the locals who live in these once beautiful regions, too many acres are now scarred by charcoal. Millions of acres. And most of it could have and should have been prevented. In the end, as a Californian who is not on the same wavelength as those who run the state, my vote only counts in the local vote, it makes zero differences to the other part of the country like senate voting, having the electoral college to have a say who gets to be president. So don’t act like this isn’t fair to Californians when I can say on behalf of the region I live in California that the state never considered our vote when you have Silicone Valley and Hollywood whispering in the ears of the politicians.
He burst on the scene with the release of this song on RADIOWV, hoping for around 300+ views. Within days he was number 1 on billboard 100 and turning down huge contracts. Oliver Anthony is name to honor his grandfather. His name is Christopher Anthony Lunsford. He has many more songs on Oliver Anthony Music. Check them out.
Washington DC is a couple hours north of Richmond Virginia which is what he is referencing. Basically “rich men north of Richmond” means politicians in DC
Thanks!
Ty so much! Thats super generous!
America is not the celebrities, The politicians, or the news media... America is this guy
Out all the truth spoken in the comments, your comment resonates the loudest to me. This is who America is ❤️
The line "Rich Men North of Richmond" refers to Washington DC and the members of Congress and the lobbyists as well as the president.
Yes, Washington DC is just a few miles north of Richmond, Virginia USA.
This is a social statement in reference to the state of the world. Referring to politicians and includes a reference to Epstien Island.

He's talking about Richmond, Virginia. Washington DC is about 2 hours north of there.
And while I agree with his statement, fudge rounds are DELICIOUS
This is the first time anyone ever heard of Oliver Anthony, we all know him now!
North of Richmond is WASHINTON DC. Hell Yeah! Its a good idea to have a Music Channel. Do it ya'll. ❤❤
@@josephcompton9340 pretty sure he meant that politicians should be paying attention to miners, rather than 'indulging' in minors on that island.
@@GotWag I know because he said so later, but his wording in the song itself didn't convey that. Great song, solid message, just one section where his message got lost :(
Look up Richmond Virginia on a map. Then look north.
@@kengilcrest8670 Dude. He lives in Portugal. Don't be a dick.
Oliver came on the scene last year with this song...
He says the American dollar is nothing because, first the government taxes our wages before we even get it, then every penny of our wages that we spend is taxed again. Until it works out that the federal government is getting about 30% of our wages in taxes.
Nobody heard of this guy before this song. He is amazing.
i saw Oliver Anthony and knew it was going to be a extra good video
He is amazing right?
Great song. Good to hear it again. Love it.
He’s new and spitting truth.
Don't worry about it bro you don't need a new channel your reaction was actually really good it seemed organic not forced 👍👍👍
Everyone in almost every country is going through it. A loaf of bread was like a dollar which is cheap for us and now bread is almost three dollars.
This song captured a country
Just do "Music Mondays!"
Once a week or once a month.
Listening to USA music will get you in touch with the heartbeat of the everyday Americans.
Oliver is amazing and speaks all truth what’s happening in the United States
He’s relatively new to the country/bluegrass scene, but he has a powerful message to bring. I love this song and as a blue collar American Male I’m not ashamed to say I cry for America every time I hear this song.
He just appeared one day and when recording companies tried to buy him off he was offered 8 million dollars he told them his soul wasn't for sell
He was offered an $8 million contract by the music industry and turned it down. America fell in love with his music, transparency, message, and integrity.
This song speaks to the darker side of America and what politicians are doing to a once great country
First song and self-published!
He is the real deal. He's been offered thousands of dollars for record deals and he has turned it down
Yes second channel for music would be amazing!
That’s a deer stand in the background
Not every country would allow a citizen to express their opinion. One of our best rights
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU REACT TO, AM I THE ONE BY BETH HART (LIVE AT THE PARADISO). IT IS AN AMAZING PERFORMANCE.
Oliver has a lot of good songs. You should check them all out. Also check out " Keep the wolf's away " by Uncle Lucas
Another recent song similar to this is Jason Aldean's try that in a small town. If you haven't already watched that one.
Richmond, Va -- about 100 miles south of Washington D.C. So the Rich men north of Richmond is talking about the wealthy politicians.
The sentiments expressed in this song resonated not only with blue collar Americans, people around the world have been moved by it. Freedom!
Yes, Washington, DC, the nation's capital, is about two hours north of Richmond, Virginia. That's on the East coast about halfway between Canada and Florida.
America is a GREAT country, but has its problems too.
YES a music channel. You're very good, balanced; dont yap too much. And genuinely intent and curious. Yes yes yes music channel
Thank you for being respectful of those of us w kids watching
Loved watching your facial reactions. This song is an anthem for the working class. It is time the people in the US clean house of the rich men north of Richmond and put in people who actually care about the working class.
He’s relatively new. He came out with this song in August and it’s already got over a 113 million views on RUclips probably well over a billion views on all social media. He’s got a lot of really great songs on his channel. I wanna go home and Doggonitt
You should react to the country acapella group Home Free singing Man Of Constant Sorrow. It is AMAZING.
Truth always hits hard
His word play on miners (mine workers - always political pawns) and minors (youngsters) is amazing. If you do music (Elvis and BeeGees!!!❤) reactions you’ll have a numbers bonanza.
This song really hits hard. When people say they want popular vote for president instead of the Electoral College, people like Oliver, and millions of others who don't live in NY, DC, or California, would get no say, because they are a slight minority. I think both left and right (Democrat & Republican) voters are getting tired of electing people to office that get nothing done and make a lot of money doing it.
He's not an anticonstitutionalist. Smfh
There's a reason for electoral college. This isn't the United States of California and New York.
@@kate2create738living in Mass is a joke voting for president every time it's Democrat if you want to go red no point in voting
I'm happy in my state 😅 but I do think we need politicians who are about the people and not about corporations
oh wow, you just now hearing this?
What a song and a performance. He sings from that deep part of the soul.
Great song, and he sings it from the heart😊
I call this a world anthem!
Washington DC and New York is located north Richmond, VA. Thanks for sharing.
Washington DC is a couple hours north of Richmond Virginia which is what he is referencing. Basically “rich men north of Richmond” means politicians in DC
