My family grew up in triad heartlands of hk back in its golden age. They told me they always kept the local area safe and in those days it was near impossible to do anything without dealing with the triad.
They also told me many were pretty open and did plenty of dealings in plain view because they were never going to be busted, its also a message to everyone that if you want to to business you go to them.
As for cops who are triad, a relative of mine dated one, my father was a kid back then and he would go to restaurants with him knowing it was free food, he never had to pay a cent and in the local shops he could help himself to anything.
My family were poor migrants from mainland china in those days.
A lot of triad members were from poor families, many were illiterate as were a great deal of people back then.
My parents would say to me "they are just trying to get by and make ends meet"
I was born decades later so i never saw those days myself but even though my parents were not fans of the triad, they understood well that at the time they were a necessary evil especially in certain areas of hk in the 50s and 60s
And all cops were corrupt those days, they were given an envelope all the time in their office draws
Paramedics were corrupt, nurses were corrupt, firemen were corrupt etc
You don't give tea money? No bed in the hospital
No tea money to firefighters? Theres no water today etc
I guess it got way too out of hand and people were fed up eventually
Of course the triad do exist, but they keep a much lower profile
Of course they still have their traditional businesses but the real money is from the legit ones!
Extortion fees, well now they have formed traders associations and i guess if you don't pay your cafes next shipment may be rotten
I would have personally met some lower ranking ones as a kid but i guess i never thought much of it at the time

Idc what anyone says, my favorite action films are the Hong Kong flicks that John Woo and Chow Yun Fat did- Hard Boiled most notably which spawned the highly underrated PS3 video game, Stranglehold which if you look at the game is essentially Hard Boiled put on a video game. Ill never forget purchasing it for 5 bucks at a Gamestop and the guy working that day said it was a crappy game but for action fans like me, best investment i ever made lol.

ah, the triads... back in hong kong's golden era, everyone knew someone connected to the triads. they were, to the older generation, a necessary evil within society. many of the modern-day groups were originally workers unions; my great-grandfather was the "dragon-head" for one of the unions in the letterpressing industry (pre-cursor to modern printing press industry).
and even into the 60s/70s, due to family business and certain ties, my family was protected by two major groups: the 14k and wo hop to. to this day any remaining elders in those groups are actually close family friends. when the ma brothers were exiled to taiwan, they basically told every triad that my grandfather was not to be touched, and they were to protect him.
its all old history now, that world is gone. a lot of these old gangsters are either dead or about to die. but many of them also represented the golden age of hong kong's economic boom and success, even if its from the underground. and that's something i've come to respect about these elders.

How the Triad could get a foothold in HK is simple and it's one factor and one factor alone... Money.
Back then during the 40s-70s, HK was developing but the government controlling the streets of HK, particularly the police, were woefully underpaid and not only was the Chinese cops feeling it, the British that was sent to HK also felt it.
Thus, the Triads got to work, expanded their business thru whatever ways they can lay their hands on money and during the 60s with the boom of the Golden Triangle, drug trafficking thru the area was rampant and easy thus Triads start pedaling high grade heroin to the streets and made bank with it. Then to prevent themselves from being caught in an unavoidable hole called "prison", many big bosses started ploys to pay off the cops with money, more cash per month than to some cops, 6 months of their original pay at their rank thus almost 70% of HK police were bought out by various organizations and some even willingly worked for the Triads for various reasons be it for more money, cohersion or simply because they want their banks to keep running.
Also, you brought up Lui Lok which was the point I was gonna make.
Lui Lok wasn't a 14K inducted member but he had crossed paths with them and even other Triad gangs across HK and noticed that killing each other for a plot of land and for that little bit of profit wasn't worth it and sending officers to arrest them with the risk of them losing their lives was even worse plus officers were reluctant to go for their pay being peanuts. Lui Lok then hatched a plan to get one of the biggest drug distributor of HK at that time which was Cripple Ho, Ng Sik-ho, to wrestle their way with the other Triad that they're only allowed to get goods from one source, sell it, then peddle at their places with a controlled price so that everyone gets fed and no trouble would occur and if one place sells it higher or lower than the set price over the deviated limit, heavy Triad punishment would be set upon them regardless how high of a position they were in be it the police or Triad organizations.
Because of that, HK suddenly saw fewer violence going around whereas cops were buying luxury goods and stuff which was way above their paygrades that even the British were pocketing money from Lui Lok and his cronies to keep quiet about the whole organized crime situation.
It wasn't until ICAC came about that his whole empire came crumbling down.

    • @Renwoxing13
      @Renwoxing13 2 месяца назад +2

It sounds more believable when you realize that :
      "Ocerthrow the monarchy"
Didnt really mean overthrow the monarchy at all, but instead kick the foreign barbarians out of power and restorw the old dynasty.
      Or
      Fan qing, fu ming.
Fan qing means destroy the qing dynasty
Fu ming means restore the ming dynasty.
Then again i could indeed be wrong and ignorant while mixing two different concepts from China.
However, i wouldnt doubt if the British i. HONG Kong are the legendary founders of those specific overthrow the monarchy societies.
At least as the money men, the idea men, and most importantly the inspiration.
I am sure that it was much more spoken about, and much more well known thw further back one goes that the European monarchies were overthrown by secret societies.
How those secret society members would roll in their graves at large multinational companies and private funds purchasing everything and leaving the common man nothing but possibly franchises. To them it would be the monarchy reborn in a new form i would think.

@@Renwoxing13 getting rid of the ching and restoring the ming has nothing to do with the western foreigners. The manchus were like 10% of the population who ruled over the 90% Han Chinese during the ching. If you mean barbarians as in the manchus, then yeh but if you mean as in westerners this would be wrong. The restoration of the ming was because it was one of the greatest periods in Chinese history. The ching were responsible for binding the feet of women, are other stuff. I remember seeing a very old lady in the 80s with bound feet. Will never forget it. Terrible thing to do to a child
