Thanks Thomas. I have several ideas penned in my little black book and some old circuits i made up many many years ago that may give the unit more interesting uses.
I don't want to be a jerk, or come off as being condescending, but one safety precaution I would recommend would be to wear a thick leather glove on your left hand while you are drilling out the holes of the panel. If the drill happened to pull the piece out of your hand and spin it, it could slice your hand very badly. I know it's really easy to neglect it because I've also done the exact same thing a million times. It's like, "eh, it's only going to take a few minutes to drill these holes, why waste the time? I'll be extra careful." However, it only takes one slip, so the glove might be helpful if an accident were to occur. The smaller the piece of metal you're drilling, the easier it is to slip from your hands. Either way, this is an awesome video, and I am really impressed with the care and precision you take with your work. The process is fascinating. Thanks for posting.
I really do oppose your view tbh. If the drill catches the glove it'll pull in your finger and that could end quite badly too. On second thought. With a leather glove its probs gonna be fine. The rubbery gardening type gloves though.. I wouldn't recommend wearing while using power tools.
11:39 You really want linear pots for these attenuators so they will work well with control signals (and 13:40 they will work well with audio signals). Great job!
simple module Im building : octave voltage dropper. basically reduce incoming CV by -1,-2 and -3 volts. handy for when sequencer is playing notes too high, or you want to turn a regular OSC into a Sub :) as well as to simply dial down other control signals

You could always cheat and use black dibond, it's a plastic/aluminum/plastic/aluminum/plastic sandwich. and if you route along where to want to bend (at about 1/2 the thickness of the panel iirc), it bends really easy. And if you engrave it by just going to the depth of the first layer of plastic it looks really smart.

Great video as always.. I can't believe your OCD didn't kick in when aligning the panel under your laser.. I guess you could clamp a piece of wood to the edge of your desk so you'd only have to align the board in one direction (Y axis) to engrave. Just my 2 cents... really fun to watch this whole process though, thank you!
debaserNYC Hi I was looking down the edge of the panel and lining it up with the edge of the aluminuim base of the laser by moving my head to one side, thats why i had it raised on a piece of wood to make it higher , it’s easier but its not perfect.
Marcus, have a search for Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black. It's a paint on dye for aluminium. If you can get over the American spelling, it's great stuff!

However i need a plate about 810mm by 380mm with about 100 odd holes (well its not exactly rack modular, anyways, do you think i could get one with the base colour being yellow ?? Here’s a weird idea. How about an x-y scope display. I like playing around with one oscillator output plotted against another on my synths. I don’t have a modular, but I get some bizarre patterns that dance around in the rhythm of the sounds on my Mother-32s. That might take up too much space in your rack for a non-audio device, but it makes a nice visual effect. I just bought a couple of old Wavetek (1901C and 1910) displays. They’ve got an 11.5” diagonal CRT.
Sharklops It’s funny you mention that. I put up a video of the patterns I got on my Mother-32s, and then Jerobeam Fenderson’s videos showed up in my recommended list. He’s got some amazing music and it’s really cool how the music and scope display work together. I downloaded a copy of PD, but it will be a while before I can get anything out of it. I can’t get the precision graphics using analog synths that Mr. Fenderson can do with PD. His videos are amazing. He posts links to his PD code, but it’s too complex for me to follow right now. I’m trying to learn PD, but I just got an ARP 2600, so that’s taking all my time lately.
Hi Tim. I have a 3" CRT scope screen that i would love to use but it looks like it may be a bit of a task to get it all working. still I prefer a CRT in this machine rather than a modern LCD screen. it would just look better i think.
markusfuller Yeah, you’d definitely want an analog CRT if you were to do it. I’ve tried both, and even the best digital scope just doesn’t do the x-y mode justice. I think you’re right; it would be a lot of work to modify one to where it looked good in your system. I’ve got an old Heathkit scope that’s small, but it’s tube based, so that would be way too much work to modify. The Wavetek units are nice because the CRT is relatively shallow, and it’s just an x-y display, so there’s no sweep circuit or complex front end. All the electronics are on one board. The problem with that is it’s almost too big in x-y to fit your rack. It would eat up a lot of space that would be better used with audio or control modules. I heard somewhere that Keith Emerson had an oscilloscope display in his modular system, but it wasn’t even hooked up to anything. It just had a dummy signal displayed. I’m not sure if that’s fact or lore, though.If I was going to do it, I’d replace the input jacks with 1/4” audio jacks, so you could just patch in whatever signal you’d like.
Well I will certainly give it some thought. It would have to be very well shielded as theres a lot of signal radiating from a crt so it could be picked up as noise in the synths circuitry. but its not impossible. its just finding the right machine to do the job.
What about a modified Ring mixer based on the balanced Quadrature Sampling Emitter and the carrier to be 4 times the wanted frequency which drives a 74AC74 configured as a Johnson Counter giving the drive signals to drive the 74HC152 configured as a balanced Quadrature Sampling Emitter (QSE) which would be driven using an audio phase shift network and should work better than the diode ring mixer and should be able to give to bands LSB/USB selected by the Johnson Counter schematic is available on the internet just a suggestion. Anyway the carrier would be 76-80khz, even though the clock is a square wave the output signal will be a nice smooth signal.
Markus, as you always point out about safety, why didn't you put the goggles on when operating the laser? If you put your arm underneath with your watch on, the stray light might go anywere, apart from any arm burns. Anyway, apart from my remark like the video!
Albert Pauw Good question Paul. the red laser is just to help line up and the marking laser is operated by a foot pedal to the left of the pc on my left and I am in the hablt of closing my eyes when i push the pedal plus I am also facing away from the machine to push the pedal. but you are quite right to point that out.

Excellent video. very informative. I've done some new designs for some of my eurorack panels and currently trying to figure out how to print them onto aluminium (even acrylic would do I suppose.) do you have any tips on that kinda thing or know any companies who do such a thing? I'm currently thinking... print them out on photo paper then mount them to the back of some clear acrylic then just drill through the holes. (but I would MUCH prefer them printed onto metal) here's a mock up I did for my turing machine. pbs.twimg.com/media/DPRqUTfXcAEBJqH.jpg:large (simply printed onto photo paper and placed on front (it's just held in place using the nuts and screws on the module and the holes for the LED's are pretty rough as i simply punched them through with a bradol :) the turing machine was also a DIY build (simple by your standards but still a fun little build) wish I had half the tools you own , especially the laser :)

Nice work. Have you ever thought of using aluminium sheets with a sublimation coating and sublimating your own graphics, dials, text etc onto the panels? I used the same pots as Moog but only smaller. they have 10k Log type A in the attenuator.
The laser lettering was impressive. When I started out, such a task involved hours of fiddly Letraset.
been there. hours of letraset and finishing off with clear varnish spray.

I use stereo jacks for midi in and midi out as you only need ground and 2 signal (as only 3 pins in a midi cable is used unless it has phantom power).
Very jealous of your rig! You could add a big stereo spring reverb to just close the whole gap and get it over with XD..

Yes it is quite difficult to buy it here in the UK at the moment. most shop keepers just look at you with suspicion if you ask for acid.

about acid, generally if it's not fizzing (making lots of tiny bubbles) then it's not working (needs to be stronger)

That drilling looks really dangerous. Surely the piece should be clamped down hard? I like having hands connected to my wrists.

Nice work. Have you ever thought of using aluminium sheets with a sublimation coating and sublimating your own graphics, dials, text etc onto the panels?
