    The 1950s Caterpillar film This New Series H D8 touts the new 225-horse power tractor (00:37). The D8 has been the yardstick of big tractors for decades, and more than 1,000 improvements have been made since the first D8 was built. For the new D8, engineers design lifetime lubricated tracks and test the product on proving grounds; the H Series D8 is then tested vigorously on Caterpillar’s proving grounds (02:25). The film discusses new features and improvements to design with the new Series H D8, including size, undercarriage, drive and speeds, and other specifications. Operators enjoy the comfortable deck (04:20) with increased visibility on the revamped tractor. The film gives an overview of operations from the deck (04:50), then shows a D8 undertaking a land-clearing job in Central Florida (05:34) and another D8 working a stripping operation at an Arizona mine (07:00). The new D8 is easy to maintain and features some other notable features, including the double reduction final drive gears, a new direct drive transmission, and the advanced lube system.

    The D2 and D11 are the only two I have not run. I was amazed that I could do just as fine a grade with D10 as with D8! But D7 and 8 were my favorites because of the jobs they are given.

    Fluid hydraulics introduction is probably the single biggest major improvement to any machinery in any field.
    Diesel engines would be the 2nd .
    But hydraulics simply allowed a massive increase in what could be then achieved.
    As both an Automotive Technician and a Mechanical Engineer when you stop and think about what operations in a huge range of engineering fields are done by hydraulics then try and design a way of doing it without hydraulics.

    • @thegreenerthemeaner
      @thegreenerthemeaner 3 года назад +2

      That is almost a hard call. Diesel engines had far more torque cubic inch to cubic inch, burned way less fuel, lasted far longer between overhauls. Hydraulics brought more precision and ability to perform a function in a way that power mechanical could not. Blade tilt? Ripper angle? Hydraulics came around almost the same time as diesel. The hands down winner in the earthmoving arena was the diesel engine. Several old dragline/clam rigs were repowered from steam to gas to diesel or straight to diesel. Couldn't quite make them hydraulic as easily as the later ones.

      I learned how to operate a dozer on a D8K. I am most certainly a CATerpillar man. I miss the old D8ks that engine (D342) would never lug down it would just spin tracks. It was only like 220 horsepower but the torque was INSANE! Grew up around CATs and operate all different yellow specimens on a daily basis. CAT diesel power is the best type of diesel power.

    Not my favorite vehicle but definitely my most appreciated. Growing up I saw normal Cats everywhere, giant factory on wheels Cats, and countless Cast rotting away in the woods. So much variety, too, back in the day. There were about 30 normal Cats creeping around my neighborhood looking for work, and collectively they probably had every year of Cat on their ranks. I was a boy in the 80's and you can bet there were still some pre-historic Cats around.

    Great video! When I was a young heavy equipment operator, I actually got to operate three different 8Hs. Thet were the later models so they all had hydraulic blades. One of them was a direct drive pulling a cable scraper. That crawler was impressive how quickly you could load up, gear up, and go spread. The other two I operated were just for dozer work. Both of them had a single shank ripper that was hinged so you could actually rip while turning so ripping straight in heavy frost was easy. I really enjoyed operating those units. This brought back good memories. Thank you.

      The 35A and 52A are torque converter drive, The 36A and 22A are direct drive, and the 46A and 68A are power shift. The 35A, 36A, and 46A are American machines, and the 22A, 52A, and 68A are the British counterparts. This video is 1958 as the powershift came out in 1959. The 46A took over and the torque converter drives were eliminated in 1961. Due to lower production numbers of direct drives, the 22A model was eliminated around 1970... At the end of production in 1974, only the 36A, 46A and 68A models remained and were replaced with the 66V, 76V and 77V D8K tractors. In 1965 and 66, significant changes were made. The 270 hp machine came out in 1966, and with it came many improvements.

I remember our machinery looked better after they had an overhaul and repaint than they did when my grandfather bought them new!!! Nowadays you would have trouble selling at huge discount these machines with their poor finish. People want better quality now than back then. Its all related to the cost now.

    Great history Periscope....where are the hydraulics? Cables lift the blade?

    • @jimharvard
      @jimharvard 5 лет назад +8

      all dozers used cables to lift the blade up through the early 1960's. there was no down force to the blade, only gravity and the weight of the blade provide downward force. the cable blade systems were pretty ingenious in that the winch on the back of the dozer provided the pulling force of cable that ran along the right side of the machine to the front "idler pulley" at the top of the radiator which then fed the cables down to the blade. the large "swing handle" beside the operator ran the winch "back and forth" which raised and lowered the blade. naturally, the cable system was no where as efficient or accurate as when hydraulic cylinders took over for lifting and "pushing down" on the blade. but because the front blade was so heavy, the cable system worked well in its day.

    • @thewidower1
      @thewidower1 5 лет назад +11

      If you paid attention to the video there was hydraulic controls on some of those machines. It was available even back then as an option but it was expensive. The cable control was thought to be adequate at the time. They weren’t to concerned about side cuts or slopes back then. A good cat skinner could always make it work.
