In cultural studies, there's this idea of Rice culture vs wheat culture. And it argues that: Cultures historically built on wheat cultures tend to produce more individualism, originality, innovation because wheat doesn't need intense group activity in order to grow and this has a massive social implications that will effect a culture for centuries. Example of countries built on wheat culture, Germany, America, UK. Rice cultures are the opposite, less individualism, less originality, less creativity and therefore lack of innovation. The reason for this is that rice farms needs intense cooperation with your neighbor. The unfortunate side effect is that it will create a shame culture which will effect an individual person's ability to be more individualistic and creative. the fear of being shamed for being too unique and not part of the strict social norm will affect a person's, individuality, confidence and inventiveness, and this will envitably trickle down to future generations. China is a hyper industrialized nation, they have no excuse for their lack of originality, creativity and innovation. The culture is the problem. The lasting cultural effects of building the foundation of your civilization on rice crops will rob future generations of their own individuality and creativity.
