Join us this time on Expedition Extinct as we look at the closed history of the Pleasure Island Family Theme Park In Cleethorpes, England.
Opening in 1993, the park closed in 2016 after 23 years of operation. Just another small theme park in the UK unable to make it in today's industry.
The park will be holding an auction on March 7th and 8th 2018 and will auction off the remaining assets from the park. If you would like to look at the auction lots or bid yourself you can find it here.

I spent most of my life going to this theme park, with little to no changes made in the last 10 years, it's spiralled so quickly because people tired of its lack of new anything ever and when they start charging more for entry and the rides feel like they could fall apart at any second, it's a recipe for disaster, not to mention the fact that the majority of grounds staff looked between 16-18...
Don't get me wrong, I loved pleasure Island and it was upsetting when it closed... However, its was obvious why.

It’s sad , but it reminds me a lot of flamingo land now , flamingo land is ran down and old it’s a bit like pleasure island but the new coaster can save it , pleasure island never got anything , other than that flat ride in 10 years , I’m sad that it shut but I can see why

I held a season pass for this place, it was literally walking distance from home as a teen, I was even there with my cousin the day the gates didn't open and the staff were laid off (your facts were a little off, there wasn't a sign on the gates, there was literally no information until about an hour after the gates were supposed to open and that information came from the angry teenagers that'd just lost their jobs). It was a great place to go and hang out with friends for the day but the entrance fees kept rising and nothing new was being opened. By the time they actually brought some new rides to the park they'd killed off the trade with the costs.
p.s. you forgot The Gravatron, a simple ride yes but by far the crowd favorite and the one I miss most fondly.
p.s.s. NOW I'VE GOT THE TINKABOO THEME IN MY HEAD!
    Thanks!

Anthony Mcdonnell Totally agree there, and with no real warning either. I was part of a campaign to save it back then. Very sadly she got her wicked way and left that park totally trashed. Don’t like her general business strategy, even at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Her last victim was the beloved wooden Wild Mouse. Haven’t been back there since. No respect for her punters IMO.

Many places that we enjoyed as a kid, close. Almost nothing last forever... Times continue to change and those parks and places suffer the consecuences and ultimately need to close.

The Tinkaboo Factory music still haunts my dreams, I can still hear now "There's lots of lovely things to eat at the Tinkaboo Fac-tor-ry." I remember one afternoon I was easting a slice of fruitcake back at the caravan and I dropped the plate and it cracked, and without missing a beat my nan, to the Tinkaboo tune went "There's lots of lovely plates to smash at nanny's ca-ra-van."
    Good times man.

So much to do with why these places fail seems to be location. A lot of the theme areas, rides & throwbacks to it's time as a zoo that this park had seem very similar to Chessington's. Tommy Tinkaboos Sweet Adventure especially, that's the twin ride to the old Professor Burp's Bubbleworks that used to be at Chessington's.
In the days when I used to go Chessington's was small, some places were tatty & all of the animals really looked like they wanted to be somewhere else. They never had the biggest or best rides, haven't rebranded in over 30 years now, but one thing they always got right was the atmosphere & considering where they're located, on the doorstep of London with good local transport, means that they always have visitors all through the season. It wouldn't matter if you went in April, August, or October, there were always huge crowds. I guess not being so dependent on holiday crowds makes a huge difference.

When it was £7.00 entry, you could get in for 50% off if you collected (I think 6.1 of each flavour) lids of a drink called Punika. Many brands used to trial products in the Grimsby / Cleethorpes area, something to do with the right social mix (rich, poor, young, old etc). This drink was on trial but even with the offer, it never took off. I remember Ariel wash tablets being trialled there and possibly Sunny Delight juice. Nowadays Cleethorpes still has some random things for the UK at least, a drive thru Taco Bell being one.

I live locally and still feel incredibly sad when I see the site going into decline. It had a good few years and our kids loved going there - such a shame.

I used to go to this par with school a lot - I swear I never remember any of the shows being performed, and a lot of the attractions being shut. This will have been 2008-2014. Still sad to see it go, though hearing the theme for the Tommy Tinkaboo ride brought back some of the nightmares from that dark ride.

Another great video! Always heard of Pleasure Island but never got to visit, did seem a little outdated towards the end by the looks of things though, but as she said without a good year they don't have the money in order to upgrade

I used to go there so often. I would only go on the Boomerang because I don’t like flat rides (except the pirate ship and the Gravitron but they were tiny). Boomerang bashed your head so much on the restraints that after going on five times in a row I’d have to take a break until my headache died down and then I’d go on it five more times and go home feeling sick. It also felt kinda janky so I was always convinced I was going to die. They were great times.

I was born in Cleethorpes (a long time ago) although we moved south when I was very young, I still used to visit family up there. I had never heard of this park until seeing the video - perhaps lack of advertising was part of why it failed!

Wow, you used my footage from the documentary I made on the construction of Shrieksville....I’m flattered! Great video, such a sad thing to think that I used to frequent this park with my kids, it was cheap entry and had plenty of fun rides. Melanie really tried to keep this park afloat and she loved the park too.

Agree with comment on smaller parks in the UK. I remember Southport, its more like a funfair now I've been to alot as a kid (obviously Blackpool n Alton Towers are still the best even as an adult) but it must be hard for those that don't/didn't have that kind of money, and it's sad really. Loving the vids though, brings back memories

Literally got the dreaded tinkaboo factory theme song :’) had some wonderful memories at this place . The boomerang was harsh though would smash your head to the side on the loop lol . Also remember mum giving me £10 for food and it getting like one burger n chips was so expensive . Very sad to see what’s happened over the years

That woman didn't want to deal with the park. If they stuck with there plans they would have done great and they still would be open she let down her father and everyone who enjoyed the park. I can tell when she talks she didn't care about the park as much as her dad did and the people who visited since it opened. It's sad very sad to see a park that could have been something great get shut down and for the people who had jobs lose them and the people who enjoyed the rides is sad and it never had to happen, If they put there heart and soul into it would have been the best place on earth. But it's too late its gone never again to be enjoyed by the people and the family that owned it couldn't be happier.

Majority of the American local theme parks have all gone the way of the smoke and disappeared in the light of Disney, Universal, Dominion and other large companies. Sad to see that but I see the point as I want bigger and better. Thanks for sharing!
