This is so cool! I was scared of the soldering. I love that the entire phone stays intact for this. I just ordered two old phones on eBay, hopefully they’re similar on the inside.
came after seeing your FB post. i loved this. it was beginner friendly too! i truly look forward to your DIY videos as i’m dabbing in this music production world and it’s lovely to see representation!!! i also agree... bringing genitals is weird into wires and i always though it was just unnecessary like cmon lol. finally somebody said it!!! appreciate you and your art (i started listening to some)!!!
Thanks! Yes, it's counterintuitive. That part of the headset that you normally speak into actually requires electrical power to generate a signal. Those old phone lines you plug into the wall actually carried an electrical current (DC I believe?), so unless you plug the phone into the wall or a power source, you can't generate a high gain signal from it. However, the other end (the part that you normally put your ear to), can conduct sound WITHOUT power. Hence it's just easier to use.
Great video. Your style makes me want to check out more of them, gonna look for your music too. I want to make a phone like that with both out- and input for a ‘late night show’. Thanks for the help!
I know this comment is a little old but you can swap the modules. Sometimes they have screws in them but sometimes you will have to resolder the cables
Will this usually work on any older telephone model? I just purchased one that looks really cool, but it's not exactly the same style. Hoping I didn't buy a cool old phone for nothing but show :/
I love this tutorial! I did everything you said and it works, but I’m not getting the “lofi” sound that I want. It sounds pretty clean. Any tips on how to make this sound? i attached my phone to an Xlr with a stereo jack so I can use it to record on my iphone.
Interestingly enough, your phone is probably too new/too good to get that lo-fi sound. You might have to go for an older/scruffier telephone. Good sound off of this means you have a well-built telephone. ^_^
The lengths people will go to if showing soldering is the goal. Soldering isn’t hard. Soldering irons aren’t expensive or hard to get. Arguably, stripping some wires is more difficult than soldering.
SuprrKnova Wow you truly blow my mind. You are so talented and my constant, especially when I'm driving and you hit those powerful licks. Its really a beautiful gift you have. Great for us.Oh man I'm in heaven! I love you SuperKova
How do i make this, but with a 3,5mm jack cable? I'm wanting to make it for my PC and maybe my phone :p, also loved the tutorial very easy to follow everything :)
The wire is any XLR cable, you can get them cheap at any music store/online. As for the interface it really depends on what you want to do with it, how many inputs you need and whether you want to plug in instruments so there's no single answer
I used just the cheapest generic XLR cable from American Musical Supply. You can use literally any brand. For audio interface, I'm using the UAD Apollo Solo, but you can use any audio interface e.g. Focusrite Scarlett, M-Audio, etc.
I don’t thinking you can record on the phone but if you want the record on the phone you can just record on the pc and than send it to your phone with mail or message
You could but you'd want to plug it into a line-in port if you have one. Be sure that one lead goes to sheath, and the other goes to tip. If it's a stereo plug, I'd guess connect tip/ring together to one wire, and sheath to the other. If it's a mono plug, you're going to get only the left channel. You might also add a tiny resistor for tip and ring so they don't backfeed on one another. But that's getting fancy.
Yes, you need an audio interface to translate the signal to digital and into your computer and you need recording software to record the signal. I used Logic Pro X, but you could also use Audacity or some other free program
Yes, you totally could! It might sound kind of wonky and you'll prob have to adjust the gain a bunch, but technically speaking there's no issue with using a 1/4"
Thanks for this. I found you because my husband and I are looking to create exactly this for our drag show in Atlanta! I came here to RUclips thinking "there's no way someone has already figured this out." And POOF! Here you are. Many thanks!!! And now I am hooked on your queer music!! Gonna listen to you right now on Spotify as hubby and I play gin in bed! Thanks again!
I'm not sure if it has a name but if you search for "Western Electric Rotary Telephone" on eBay, Craigslist, FB Marketplace etc. You'll find it or something similar!
Incorrect. The mic at the bottom of the receiver is a carbon mic, and would need to be powered. They're using the earpiece (speaker) AS a microphone so this is 100% a dynamic microphone.
(The speaker uses a magnet and a coil to generate the sound. You're reversing that procedure, using the speaker cone as a diaphragm to actuate the magnetic field of the coil. This is, in essence, an ad-hoc dynamic mic.)
This is so cool! I was scared of the soldering. I love that the entire phone stays intact for this. I just ordered two old phones on eBay, hopefully they’re similar on the inside.
Yay! Hope it went well!

Thank you so much!! Yes, I agree and glad you could connect ❤️
That's super cool you're doing youtube videos/music tutorials !
Thanks! Yes, I'm excited to make more 😊
This is super cool! I've hung on to a receiver like that from an old phone for years, time to put it to use :D
Yay! Glad you could put it to use 😊
hell yeaa,thanks
You're very welcome!
Hi ! Very nice video!! Why did you not use the speaker part of the phone headset part??
Wow! You make this look so easy!
Thank you, Ellen!! ❤️
Saw this on the FB group and had to check it out because is this a dream of mine? Yes.
Yay! Thanks for checking it out! I'm so glad 💜
Do you know if theres any way to get it working from the end you would normally speak into?
I know this comment is a little old but you can swap the modules. Sometimes they have screws in them but sometimes you will have to resolder the cables

Hmmm not sure this will work for EVERY phone. But it should work on most phones of similar build.
This yellow telephone is so much nicer than the one I've got.
Haha I splurged and bought a nice looking one off the ol' eBay. I couldn't find a one from the thrift stores around me at the time.
Everything in this video is super pretty
Thank you 🥺

So not true lol
This video is so helpful! thank you so much 🌞

Thank you!
Thanks so much for this, I'm going to try it out! Going to check out your music too. Best of luck with the channel!
Thank you! Hope it turned out well!
Working on this currently, is there any tips for doing it with the mic?
How do i make this, but with a 3,5mm jack cable? I'm wanting to make it for my PC and maybe my phone :p, also loved the tutorial very easy to follow everything :)
You solder it
By the way what happens when you try to ring this telephone?.. would it fry the equipment?..
This is freaking rad!
Thank you!
If I used an aux chord instead of an XLR could I plug it into an audio output and listen through it when I'm not recording with it?
Do you know if this setup can playback a message as well? Looking to setup some voicemail recording devices for weddings.
Well sure if you use a DAW you can playback like you would playback any recording
@@SuperKnovaMusic not sure what a DAW is?
@@AbshireFilms DAW is a digital audio workstation (e.g. Logic Pro X, Ableton Live, GarageBand, etc.)
i was smiling the entire time!
🥰❤
Is it possible if we replace microphone cable with guitar cable?
Can you tell me what audio interface and wire you use, thanks!
The wire is any XLR cable, you can get them cheap at any music store/online. As for the interface it really depends on what you want to do with it, how many inputs you need and whether you want to plug in instruments so there's no single answer

What should i do if i want to connect aux I dont have a xlr cable and audio interface and all that. I want to record on my phone
I don’t thinking you can record on the phone but if you want the record on the phone you can just record on the pc and than send it to your phone with mail or message
Is there any way to attach the 3.5mm jack to it so it can be plugged directly in a pc?
You could but you'd want to plug it into a line-in port if you have one. Be sure that one lead goes to sheath, and the other goes to tip. If it's a stereo plug, I'd guess connect tip/ring together to one wire, and sheath to the other. If it's a mono plug, you're going to get only the left channel.
You might also add a tiny resistor for tip and ring so they don't backfeed on one another. But that's getting fancy.
And you can save the recordings made through the phone? Does that require any other kind of software or tech?
Yes, you need an audio interface to translate the signal to digital and into your computer and you need recording software to record the signal. I used Logic Pro X, but you could also use Audacity or some other free program
This is so sick.
This is too stinkin' cool !
could you use a 1/4" so that you could run the mic through stomp boxes?
Yes, you totally could! It might sound kind of wonky and you'll prob have to adjust the gain a bunch, but technically speaking there's no issue with using a 1/4"

Yay! Thank you so much! Hope your show went great 💜
thank you for uploading this!! i've been wanting to make a pohone mic for so long now! :)))
No prob! Happy DIY'ing 😊
Thank you muh dear
Ofc!
Sadly mine doesnt look as simple as yours. Doesnt seem to be screws
Do you need to hook it up to any power or a battery or anything?
Nope! Not if you use the speaker end as shown in the video. If you want to use the mic end of the phone, you would need power.
So cool, thank you!!
No prob!
Why use the earpiece and not the microphone?
Using the microphone requires power, using the earpiece does not!
Ooh looks cool!
Thanks! It was fun to make and also to use 📞🎶
Well done! I enjoyed your music too!
Thank you, Jerry!! 💜
Great tutorial !
Thanks! 😊
let’s fucking go!!!!!!
can we record using that?
Absolutely yes.
What is the name of this telephone??
I'm not sure if it has a name but if you search for "Western Electric Rotary Telephone" on eBay, Craigslist, FB Marketplace etc. You'll find it or something similar!
why dont u use the regular mic as the mic instead of holding the phone upside down ?
The regular mic requires power to use, the speaker end does not
🤓😍
))) carbon microphone it`s carbon microphone... it`s not a ribbon or dinamic mic
Like!
Incorrect. The mic at the bottom of the receiver is a carbon mic, and would need to be powered. They're using the earpiece (speaker) AS a microphone so this is 100% a dynamic microphone.

Yess! Amazing, came from your IG post, subscribed. Love your music and so happy you are making tutorials! I want to try this hehe
Yay! Thank you! Yes, let me know how it goes :-)
Omg you're the cutest!
