Nope. You know the saying ‘Possession is nine tenths of the law’? Well when it comes to the throne, possession is 100% of the law. If you’re sat on the throne and no other claimant has the power to remove you then the throne is yours, and everyone else can swivel for it. There are probably hordes of people out there who could probably try claiming that they’re the rightful heir to the throne because they’re distantly related to a king or queen who once sat on it, but they won’t get very far. Brutal but true.
ds1868 Yes he originally received a decent and perhaps "proper" burial. However the Kings body was lost to time. "My bones scripted in light", Poor start. Duffy this is unimaginative. ie too pre , visualized, not human enough, no mention of his wrongs. We cannot eulogise a failed man to this extent
What an odd event. As an aside, how many other kings have been buried outside of the capital? Seems a little disrespectful to me to bury him in a provision city.
Ideally though, when a body is found by an archaeological dig it should be buried in the nearest holy ground, as has been done here. But yeah I wondered why they couldn't find room for him in Westminster
Joanne Rowley They don't have to be buried just in Westminster. They can be buried anywhere they like. No doubt in Richard's time Westminster was just a rural outpost of London, which was only a square mile big.
Joanne Rowley Westminster Abbey is really a creation of Henry VII, Richard's mortal enemy. I wouldn't want him there. I would have said,"Bury Richard III in York, the city that stood up for him when he was killed, and could have been punished by the paranoid Henry VII". But the powerful said no to that.
It's not as unusual as you might think. Henry VI, Henry VIII, and all monarchs since George III, were buried in Windsor. George I was buried in Hanover. Most of the Monarchs between Elizabeth I and George II were buried in Westminster Abbey, but King John was buried in Gloucester, there was another in Canterbury, a couple of the early Plantagenets are in Anjou, William the Conqueror is in Normandy, etc.
@Tricia M Westminster Abbey is not a 'creation' of Henry VII. The Abbey was founded by King Edgar in 960, and rebuilt first by King Edward the Confessor in 1065 and again by Henry III in the thirteenth century. Seven English sovereigns were buried in the Abbey before Henry VII, in fact the Henry VII Chapel is one of the last additions to an Abbey Church which had already been standing for over 500 years.
Meme Guy History rarly looses the body of a Monarch. I can not say as to whether he was a bad King or a misunderstood or even malaligned King. Whatever the case I do believe that he deserved a better grave. Having ones remains literally driven over day in day out...well I do not think that the dead should be treated in such a way. Of course the current owners did not know, with 100% certainty back then. When they were made aware I believe he deserved better than to have been simply put back where he had been found. Just my opinion. Have a great day/night.
Cumberbatch strikes me as good lad but he sure is posh. I somewhat doubt it was hard for him to achieve success with the likely backing he got from his family and there connections.
I'm an atheists t0 me all this is silly and useless but if you are going to do it get the right religion. Richard III would have never heard of Protestantism so this is really stupid you might as well do it in a mosque or a temple.
Skiffypig1 You do not know that with one hundred percent certainty. It is beieved by some that Shakespeare was the propaganda machine of the Tutor Court. I am American new to this part of history thus still undecided. I will say that even if he had been a terrible person/King, he deserved better. No one deserves for their remains to be ran over day and night till the end of days.

King of England the last Plantagenet king
v L u k E v 94 He was an English king from the York branch of the Plantagenet family. They fought the Lancaster branch for the throne in the Wars of the Roses. Both the Yorkist and Lancaster branches descended from King Edward III, but through different sons.
I'm King
Hahaha of course they're related.

DAMN THAT VOICE IS SEXY
"My bones scripted in light", Poor start. Duffy this is unimaginative. ie too pre , visualized, not human enough, no mention of his wrongs. We cannot eulogise a failed man to this extent
Didn't Richard III murder his nephews?
What an odd event. As an aside, how many other kings have been buried outside of the capital? Seems a little disrespectful to me to bury him in a provision city.
Ideally though, when a body is found by an archaeological dig it should be buried in the nearest holy ground, as has been done here. But yeah I wondered why they couldn't find room for him in Westminster
Joanne Rowley
They don't have to be buried just in Westminster.
That's nice. It would be even nicer if the remains of the princes in the tower could be found and put to rest.
They have.
They're buried in Windsor castle in the chapel where Harry married that dreadful actress.
Fake.
this dude has been dead for over 500 year, why have another funeral
Ihaba S
He sounds like an actor, that's what they sound like. Majestic? why because he's distantly related? Don't make me laugh.
Does no one realise that this king was a horrible man!!!
Because a car park simply won't do.
This wasn't that good.
