    You are 100% correct, brother! People who are spending on speculation are playing with fire! And that means they're going to get BURNED at some point! If someone is collecting for the love of characters, stories, art, and community, THAT is the right reason! People need to just enjoy the genre and stop with the flipping books and stuff!! Patience may pay off, but only time will tell!

    A major part of the problem here was that a lot of dealers on RUclips were week in week out telling everyone to buy the hot book before it goes up even more, and surprise surprise they had copies to sell, I got shouted down on one channels comments for saying that I would not buy UF 4 at $4500 and I explained why I thought that was the case. my reasoning being that at the top of any market the only people to make money are the ones who already have the product , there was more with regards to supply and demand , I did not call anyone anything bad I just made a reasoned argument. I got called stupid and had my post deleted , It was obvious to me that the entire reason for the video was to drum up sales at the high price but it was done as a you better get it before it's too late video. Any collectable fluctuates in price and if you look at the history of any over inflated market , the market always adjusts. There is an element of personal responsibility at play here, if you want a guarantee of return by Government bonds!

    There are only three bottom-line reasons a particular comic book has value --
    1. Paper content (for recycling purposes);
    2. Its inherent entertainment/artistic value (which is highly subjective but depends mostly on the opinion of the purchaser);
    3. Its position as a status symbol (which is also highly subjective but depends mostly on a consensus opinion from other people).
    I submit to you that anyone who's serious about trying to profit financially from purchasing desirable comic books would be much, much better off investing in gold. It's scarce, it has numerous real-world applications that will ensure it's always in demand, it's compact, it's darn near indestructible, it's held in high regard by just about every culture, government and financial institution on the planet, and it has a proven track record of financial stability and profitability that goes back thousands of years.
    Yes, a high-grade copy of _Detective Comics_ issue 27 will likely be valuable for years to come. But it consists of cheap newsprint that will probably deteriorate over time, and it's possible to purchase a facsimile for $50 or less that accomplishes everything an original printing does, except "being an original printing." If there were to be a really serious economic downturn in the U.S. and elsewhere, prices for collectible comic books are gonna drop like rocks.
    Just my opinion. And that's why I buy cheap reprints.

    • @socom18psp
      @socom18psp Год назад +2

      Detective Comics 27 has been around for 84 years now. In that time it has gone from 10 cents to well over 1 million dollars even in mid grade. Gold in 1939 was around 34 dollars per Oz and currently sells for just over 2000 dollars. In the last 84 years tec 27 has out perfromed gold by a massive amount. From 1939 to around 1970 golds value went up around 1 or 2 dollars basically nothing. Since the 1970s it has become very volitaile and has had huge incrases and decrases in value. As for the facsimile question the only thing it shares in relation to the original is the art/story and even that is somewhat different. A huge aspect of collecting is the actual material itself. A facsimile does not have the same type of paper and feel as the original. For collectors like myself the feel, smell and historical signifigance of the original is lost. Even the way the colors of the inks look is not the same experince of the original. This is a huge aspect of collecting the comics in the first place.

    The trust lacking in the industry for me started when ebay was introduced. Making all the sales data open to everybody only meant prices became more volatile and could be manipulated even easier. They should look-up the value of their books in a 2020 Overstreet and subtract that number from what they paid to see how underwater they are. I honestly refuse to buy any books inflating due to an MCU release. The MCU's output, especially after Endgame, has largely lacked staying power. Exactly to your point, if this thing is gonna be on Disney+ in eight weeks after a meh box office showing, the comic price will dip in kind. If you're trying to time the market and flip the book before it dips, it's kinda sucky because it leaves someone else holding the bag, but I suppose you CAN make money that way.
    I just collect books for characters I like, and I think if I ever dip into buying some seriously pricey keys, it'll be for timeless stuff when they're not in the middle of the movie hype cycle. As a DC lover, (love Marvel too but not as much lately), I'm bummed that this same MCU cycle is probably coming for the new DC movies.

    This discussion of "trust" is very important and something we really need to talk about as a community but I feel like social media kinda solved that problem for the publishers. As a 20 year collector, I know that the worst decisions that do the most damage to the community come from the very top of DC and Marvel (and now their parent companies). But the publishers weren't pumping up all these worthless, modern variants, it was youtubers. The publishers have hid their influence behind a bunch of influencers who seem to be sharing misleading market data with the masses.
    When the market crashes, the folks that are going to take the blame are the influencers who keep trying to promote dollar bin fodder as spec books.

    I think a big takeaway regarding the comic market in recent years is comic fans should trust in patience. And when I say "comic fans," I mean people genuinely interested in the medium in some way.
    I'm talking about the readers and collectors who like the stories, characters, creators, writing, art, history, etc.
    Some books are gonna go up in price and part of that is simply due to time. But there are deals out there and books aren't all unattainable.
    Patience comes in especially with speculation. If you're after a book and the prices jump because of a movie or TV show, fall back for a bit. That's also where the beauty of having a variety of interests comes in. There's always something I'm after.
    Let the flippers, dealers and speculators swap money with each other repeatedly. C'est la vie.

    I'm not sure the market itself is necessarily volatile, but the speculators that weaseled their way in made it appear so. As you say, there are time tested books and characters (AF 15 is an obvious example) that are immune to spec behavior. The ultra high end of this market will always be stable. As will the low end. Dollar books are always gonna be dollar books. It's spec dabblers skewing the means for middle of the road books. Example: I picked up a very decent Spotlight #2 several years ago for peanuts. Similar examples are 4 or five times what I paid. I know there was a Disney+ special and all but that doesn't affect the rarity or availability of this book. Speculation is a four letter word as far as I'm concerned. I'm glad there are slightly fewer than there were recently, but it's something to always look out for. Every bubble bursts and whenever specs and flippers raise their heads, unfortunately the only thing to do is wait them out.

    Comic book pump n dump.
    But I know a lot that we’re collectors but went away from it. Then the Covid stay at home got them back into it.
    Also now with the movies, it’ll overhype the price.
    Also there are ppl on RUclips that does a “too 10 to buy right now” and magically those books listed were for sale at $500 but now at $700. I believe these ppl overhype these books as well. Especially if you have these books for sale. Never buy on the hype.

    Correct on all fronts! I'm also in to collecting Pokemon and sports trading cards with my boys...the Pokemon market got hit hard early 2022, so they are about one year ahead of the comic boom regarding decline. One thing to note with Pokemon, it's on a rise in certain areas, like a rebound, so I can see the same happening to the comic market in about a year. It will just take a catalyst to make it happen. Regardless of speculation, just collect what you love and it won't hurt as much...

    Even precious metals like gold swing enormously in value imagine comic books whose only value is the one determined by demand.
    I can understand being pissed but huge drop in prices have to be taken into account, like for any other product, exactly like huge spikes albeit the latter are obviously preferred.
    So for me it's not a question of trust but of how risky one wants to be with his investments.
    P.s. I keep seeing people hanging slabbed comics on walls like painting: I don't know if those frames have some sort of protection but light is one of the worst enemies of comics; is that a concern of yours at all?

    I think you're focused on the "short term" rather than the long term. If your Fantastic Four 52 actually dropped 50% and you were a true fan, you actually shouldn't be "mad". Were you planning on selling it soon? No? Then why worry? We both know that will always be an important book and will never "go down to 0 in value". You're focused on "timing the market" as opposed to time in the market. These are great investments because from a historical map, majority of these keys, grails, and older books have actually appreciated an average 9%-15% yearly. Yes, there's plenty of books that have lost their value since the Covid "boom", but there's plenty of books that have reached a new "floor" in relation to the boom. Prior to the Covid hit, you could acquire an ASM50 for under $300 for a nice copy and a Fantastic Four 48 in a (5.0) grade for under a thousand raw. You won't find that these days because the prices have adjusted. There will always be "ebbs and flows" for any collectible. If I kept every big book even after the Covid drop, I'd still be ahead with the market prices of today. I think you missed the floor on X-Men 4 as I believe people got their tax returns and have pushed a lot of big key grails back up in value in align with their incoming monies. Keep up the content and just take a breath. Things will be fine.

    It isn't unpredictable at all. If you buy movie based spec books, they will go down and you will lose your money. That's the prediction...it's always right. Not one of these fomo books, whether it is silver age or modern has kept their initial value. That sounds totally predictable to me. If you 'love' a book, you're not one of the people running around trying to get it before the movie comes out.
    People have only benefitted in the short term on these books. Knowing and observing this, I don't see anything unpredictable at all.

    I know with the first full carnage, I bought that when there was massive hype. but I did that, out of fear of it going up even more. But the movie wasn't horrible but seems like the carnage next movie isn't likely ;) so seems I over paid a wee bit, but yet he's still popular so I don't feel bad about losing about 100 bucks, but I collect amazing spiderman. But I'm so frustrated with the way people flock and buy stuff, like the first White Vision is a perfect example. personally I don't care about Vision, so I didn't want that book. in fact I had it and gave it away about 5 months before Wanda vision came out. because it was worth almost nothing. but I don't care since it still worth almost nothing to me ;) but seeing how much a next to worthless comic shot up so fast, then crashed again... most I've ever paid is 500 for a ASM 300 but I know that one isn't going to move down or up too much in the coming years. I did go back and buy other issues of Spider Man I needed for my run that had more of the symbiote story.. but again it's more of a before they jump to crazy prices, and even if they dropped what I paid for them is about the cost of the CGC grading services
