something to think about on the combat results table, or someone never thought of it. In the 5-1 and 6-1 column,, then the 7-1, 8-1, 9-1 columns... what if an attack is 6-1 then a +1 is added to the die roll... same goes for the 8-1, a +1. if you have a 9-1 a +2 to the die roll... What is the the reason for having those 6-1, 8-1, 9-1's. other than you didn't make it to the magical 10-1 AV results... just something to think about for those useless 6-1, 8-1, 9-1 extra boots on the ground, for no good reason, odds... I have the original game from 76 and actually got it out a month ago or so, then found out that a new and updated one came out. this one here. so i ordered it, clipped all the corners on the pieces, even did it to the 1976 game. it was a good game in the 70's.. and from what i have been reading and watching yours and others video's it is now a great game... going to be finishing up my Normandy 44 in a couple of days and this one will be hitting the pool table/wargaming table by this weekend...
looks wondeful SJ...unfortunately I'm gearing up to play Russia Beseiged. I just cut 1000 counters on it musta taken 10 hours...sidebar, the next innovation in board wargaming will be precut counters in trays inside the box shrinkwrapped with counters aligned correctly...but it hasn't happened in the 50 yers I've been playing.
I checked the rules and even the optional rules. If you are the attacker and obtain an AR (Attacker Retreat) result you retreat your units 1 or 2 hexes, in which case the situation that you describe ("retreat forward") is still allowable. In more recent wargames, we usually see that retreating units are required to retreat towards a specific direction (usually towards friendly supply sources). There is a specific illustrated example in the rulebook showing an AR result, with the Germans retreating one of their stacks deeper into Russian territory. I understand that this may be a turn-off for some wargamers, but it appears to be an encouraged tactic in this game.
Looking forward to seeing a few turns. Thank you!

Why not do ‘play throughs’ of the scenarios included in the game?

Did they fix the "retreat forward" trick?
That drove me crazy.
