    This video may be 4 years old, but is the only source of info on the internet ( after much searching), about Limelight’s, that answered my question of “what happens if I cut a flower off”. As always thank you Jim!

    I have one that my neighbor gave me duing my bout cancer and that's when my boxer died in '08. I call it my Diamond tree after my boxer. I have never trimmed it. My one is the size of your 2. The flowers on mine are enlong gated. I give some of them to my florist for arrangement. She also uses them for funerals. I have never used fertilizer on mine. It is huge. I love them as a dried arrangement.

    I am so thrilled to have found your channel. I'm in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia, z6, and you have videos on so many of the new shrubs I've bought this year - and your videos are so much more in depth and informative than any I've found before. I purchased four Limelights to use as a hedge in the center of a 75 foot property border and now I have a much clearer idea of how it will look and spacing requirements. I also have six Confetti hydrangeas and I was going to plant three on each end of the Limelights but I doubt it's needed now. Thank you for all your wonderful videos.

    Hi, I have a question regarding these hydrangeas paniculata. It's my first year growing them, but they don't seem to sit well as cut flowers. How do you keep them alive after they have been cut? Mines just don't seem to last no more than 3 days after they have been cut. It's either I'm not using the appropriate flower food or there must be a hidden pesticides that it's eating them up. Any tips would be appreciated very much thank you! 💕

    • @SandraSElam
      @SandraSElam Год назад

      I've grown Limelight hydrangeas for 4 years in Virginia, Zone 7a. The cut flowers wilt quickly (within a day or two) early in the summer. However, if you pick the flowers in late September or October, they last for several weeks in water and they will actually dry without losing their color. You can keep them in a vase with no water (as a dried arrangement) for months.

    • @Gargamel19
      @Gargamel19 5 лет назад

      Considering the habits these guys have i would leave them spaced apart enough to grow personally....It looks like they can get quite large...The might get big for you and then create a "canopy" effect on anything thats growing around it and starve those plants of sunlight! lol ; )

    I ordered Hydrangea paniculata Limelight from the nursery; but once I planted them I realized it was actually Hydrangea paniculata Little Lime Light. I'm upset because I wanted the larger Limelight that get's 6-8' tall. I also researched and wanted the regular H. paniculata because it is a proven Pennsylvania Horticulture Society Gold Medal Plant. Do you know anything about Little Lime? Does it perform as well? Does Little Lime get as many blooms? Do you know how big it will get H & W in zone 7A?

    • @SandraSElam
      @SandraSElam Год назад

      Little Lime will probably get 6 feet tall. Limelight, as shown in the video, gets 10 to 12 feet tall, so you should be fine.

    Hi there, I'm a novice gardener. We had these installed in our garden last summer and they've flourished. That said, their blooms are so large that they droop. How can we encourage upward growth so that they start to look more like the ones in your video vs. being a huge droopy (but very flowerful) mess? If we could get them to be 6-7' high with all the blooms towards the tops of the plants that'd be awesome!

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  7 лет назад

      +Nhu Vu Some late winter pruning would help thicken the branches some. Is it possibly in to much shade?

If they sell them somewhere you could just take a chance, keep it in a pot, and then see how it goes?? maybe if it can slowly acclimate to where you are and the sun it needs then it might work. These dont have the same habits as a traditional hydrangea you can buy on mothers day at large chain stores, so it COULD work. I'd give it a try.....*shrugs*

    I just planted one of these. It was a baby with only about 8 branches. It is in full bloom right now. But my question is, do the flowers change colors? And when is the best time to cut them so I can dry them? Also how do I encourage the plant to grow new shoots and fill in more? Right now is tall and lanky looking and when we get a storm the branches fall over but don't actually break. Thanks!

Another question, the fence where we're planning to plant these is a wooden 6 footer. They won't be getting any sun until around 2 pm in the afternoon during the summer months. Good idea, or should we consider another location? Thanks!

    Wonderful Video and thank you so much. So I want my Limelights to be at most 6 feet. So if I am always cutting them back in late winter or early spring, and they only bloom on new growth, can you please tell me how will they ever reach my desired height? Thank you!

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  5 лет назад +2

      If you only want them to bloom at 6 feet then you will have to cut them down to 3 or 4 feet every late winter. They will grow 2 to 3 feet before they bloom.

      @@JimPutnam That is exactly what i do! I live in the NE. Actually I think mine grow /bloom to 10-11 feet. I try to cut off the bottom branches so the deer cant get to it, but each heavy rain tends to push the branches down. I"m thinking of tying them up this coming spring..

    Hey Jim - I am a new gardener and am learning so much from your videos. Would I be able to train my Limelight Hydrangea to what I think is called a "lollipop" shape? I don't want it to be a perfect ball of flowers on top, but would like to see if I could get it to have a trunk at the bottom two-thirds and blooms only on the top third of the tree? I hope this makes sense. : ) Thanks!

    Jim, thanks for the awesome video and information. I finally have a home where I can do some planting and I really like these. My intent is to plant them to create a little bit of a barrier between my yard and neighbors. Honestly, I was hoping you might be able to weigh in on how to best purchase these to get them growing. Should I order them as a bare root plant? Get them in a quart pot? A gallon? I guess I would like to make sure they get a chance to really start growing before the heat of Arizona gets going in May/June (I am in zone 9). Really appreciate any input, if you have time. :-)

It can get up to 115 in the summer !

      been there dude. Ive made 3 separate attempts to buy them and they all died (except for this most recent on that ive kept in a pot on my patio) it receives morning sun and then afternoon shade, but other than that i have no plans to put it in the ground because of all the other times the did it and they ALL just wilted and died.
      Limelights are supposed to be really great though and DONT have the same habits as traditional ones you buy on mothers day that look all pretty in their pot at the store. I would try these as a last attempt if you really want to give it a fair shake. ; )
