    The actual shape of the wheels matter less for those wondering. It's entirely possible the surface of the 20in wheel with the aero caps is more aerodynamic than the 18in Martian wheels used here. Bigger difference is the massively wider 275 rear tires on the performance model versus 235 in the normal model. Plus the performance model has more sticky tires whereas the 18in tires are optimized for low rolling resistance

    • @ervin9805

      thanks for explaining. so the video was more a test on wheel sizes rather than martian wheel vs stock wheel?

    • @watermelon1221
      @watermelon1221 17 дней назад +2

      yes, tire is a big factor. the 20 uses high performance summer tires while the 18 inch one uses all seasons that are also optimized for low rolling resistance. The wheels help, but so do the tires. It's probably closer to 8-11% difference if the 20 inch one used the same hankook tires

      @@ervin9805 no the video was a more a test on *tire* size and type. The shape and size of the *wheel* were not directly tested here because not all other external variables were the same or controlled

      FastWheels makes an 18" Aero wheel that fits. A viewer of my channel put them on his 2024 Model 3 Performance and got 360 miles of range real world. He's averaging 218 Wh/mi. I have the same wheels (in 19") on my 2022 Model 3 Performance and I average 214 Wh/mi and get 340 miles of range. I get the owner of Martian Wheels is your friend and all, but there are better options if you want maximum range. I don't have anything against Martian wheels, I use them when I take my car to the track 😎

    I put 19 inch wheels on my MYP24 for winter tires. My consumption improved about 8%. It's now 3 weeks later, temperatures have plummeted to around freezing and those 8% have equalized to where I now have the same consumption as I had on 21inch wheels and summer tires. It's a pretty good buffer.

    So it looks like the uphill range impact was +20 miles and downhill real-world range impact was +40 miles with the 18s vs the 20s. Very impressive! I have to assume that the fact the 20s have aero covers helped them a bit too. I'd imagine that if the Martians hypothetically had good aero caps, we'd be looking at maybe another 10-15 miles extra range on top of these already big gains.
    Based on my calculations using an 80KWh battery pack size (yeah I know that's slightly inaccurate), the M3P on these 18s got upward of 255 miles real-world range on the uphill leg and 314 miles (!) on the downhill leg, all in near-freezing weather. Even running the stock 20s it was getting 235 miles uphill and 273 miles downhill. That's fairly incredible. My old 2018 Model 3 LR (on 19s and Michelin PS AS 4) would have been hard-pressed to manage even 220 miles average real-world range at these temperatures, sometimes I wouldn't even reach 200 miles. This new car on the 18s is averaging ~285 miles and on the 20s averaging ~255 miles. And the older model on paper supposedly had more range than this new M3P does! Even at 80mph, this new car on the 18s could probably do ~250 miles even in near-freezing weather. Theoretically you could drive from Atlanta to Philly needing only three charges even in winter. In my old car, I had to stop at least five and sometimes six times doing this route in the winter. Insane improvement.
    Funny enough, I just slapped on some ultra-lightweight 18 inch Atomic wheels and the Hankook Ion Evos to my own new M3P yesterday. Can't wait to see these kind of efficiency improvements myself! Though I'm so torn on putting this rocket ship into Chill... 😆

    Martian (and TSportline & others) should come out with some aero caps for their wheels. I'm really surprised they haven't done this yet. I think if they had optional aero caps, they might do quite well on a range test.
    I have a set of 19" Titan 7 TS5 wheels on my '19 M3P, and while they look great, the aero efficiency isn't great. In fact, it was worse than i thought it was going to be given the weight savings that they provide (rims are 19 lbs each). If Titan 7 made an aero cap for those, I'd totally buy a set.
    Any, it'll be interesting to see how this test shakes out.

    • @zmarko
      @zmarko 17 дней назад

      PS - I also have 18" wheels for my winter setup, but I forget the brand of wheel (it's not Martian/TSportline). Got them used when I had my Kia Stinger GT.
      And as a tip for M3P owners, any 18" wheel that fits the Kia Stinger GT will fit the M3P also as they have the same bolt pattern & offset. Center bore is different so you may need some hub-centric rings). So that could be a source for some no-tesla-tax inexpensive wheels for the M3P. 🤣

    Impressive test setup. You should add weight to car where lighter person drives If you want to eliminate driver weight variable. Or you could swap driver every 100 miles or so if you want to eliminate driver weight and driving style variable.

    I wonder how much range those same wheels and tires would yield on the LR AWD Model 3. The EPA range for that car varies dramatically for 18” vs 19”wheels.

  • @CanonicGames
    @CanonicGames 16 дней назад

    When are you going to do a range test of the Gen2 R1S with and without the aero wheels? People are claiming they make no difference since Rivian doesn't claim any additional range, but it would be interesting to see actual data on standard wheels vs aero wheels (with aero caps) vs aero wheels (without aero caps)? I'm guessing there is a reason Rivian doesn't add claimed range for the wheels probably related to them not doing an EPA test with them??

    Interesting there are such large calipers in the rear, usually this is the case in the front. I suppose those cars are heavier, and no heavy gas engine in the front, so rear braking is more important...

      @@bnort1040 sure though even smaller changes can still produce results that may indicate a better performance than actual. I haven’t watched it through yet, did he mention the tire brand or width differences at all? Wonder if the Hankooks are a more eco focused design and if they also were a 275 rear section width as opposed to the normal AWD setup which is a square 235.

    Tesla should offer at least 1" smaller rims for all us people wanting Performance cars but skips that one just because of the comfort and range decreases with the big P rims. They could sell the 1" smaller rims at the same price. Many would opt fort that option and not buy the LR. That would mean higher average selling price for Tesla.

    It looks like the stock wheels have the stock performance tires too. This range increase is not all down to the wheel diameter, but also the tire compound and section width of the tires. Not exactly a like for like comparison between wheels.
