Isaro makes beautiful watercolor paints, the downside is that Jackson's only carries their small 7ml tubes (about 1 full pan when completely dried) and they are on the expensive side. My favorite lower price alternative is Roman Szmal, often providing the same amount of paint for half the price.
For your reference, most 15ml tubes of watercolor = 2 full pans or 4 half pans (completely filled, air dried and topped off again to account for shrinkage). Some brands shrink slightly more or less than others due to the water content in that particular company's formula.

Colorful line drawings can be done with disposable Copic or Micron pens, but the most economical option long term is dip/calligraphy pen or refillable technical pen using bottled ink.
I most often use very fine line width 01 fineliners or 0.20 tip size technical pens.

White highlights: I use white gouache and a 3/0 princeton heritage round detail brush. I no longer recommend gel pens (blobs, skips, fixed line width). Any pro grade PW6 Titanium White gouache can be mixed with watercolor to tint your highlights.
M Graham has a lovely white gouache that does not crack in the dry pan as badly as other brands, but Schmincke Horadam's pro gouache is a close second with superb quality.

I think this may be my favourite video of yours so far! I LOVED how technical you got with the pigments and how they stain and combine opposed to mixing them from two separate pigments on your own at home. I really like how you talked about the properties of Turners formulation vs Qor and honey based WC. I had to learn the hard way how to use extra water painting with sennelier and that’s valuable info. I also used to think it was bad that Turner would be streaky on my swatch cards but have come to appreciate how stationary the flow is when I’m painting with Turner and not doing an even wash or swatch card. I would love a video going into even more depth on each brands formulation properties (I recently realized how much I value that Winsor and Newton very rarely gets shiny even in masstone as that’s one of the only things I don’t like about Schminckes formulation (everything else about Schmincke is awesome though, probably has the most consistency amongst pigments (viridian and potters pink aren’t as shockingly gummy, weak or hard to reactivate as other brands versions of these can be). You seem to have a very vast knowledge of these things and detailed breakdowns like that are sparse on RUclips, I would love to hear you go even more in depth on these things!! Your channel rocks!!
Thanks, so glad to hear you enjoyed the video! I feel the same about Schmincke, sometimes the glossy shine really bothers me (Renesans is bad about that too). There is SO much to talk about regarding paint and pigment properties lol. I've got about 354464702348 video ideas including spotlights for dozens of my top recommended pigments that I hope I'll have time to make eventually, but I will definitely add a paint characteristics episode to my to-do list. It would be good to chat about things like disperse rates, honey paints needing water, how shiny and matte some brands are in masstone etc. It is a neglected topic. Happy painting :)

I was just on another wc channel learning about pigments as I've been wanting to get new watercolors, but I feel I'm better off learning about pigments and buying single tubes instead of buying sets that might have colors that I don't want. Anyway, a few of the viewers had mentioned your channel and how their learning so much about pigments- so I had to come over and see what you're about- and I'm so glad I did! I've been an artist for well over 50 years but always did oils and some pastels mostly, but in the last bunch of years I finally took the plunge and got into acrylics (not my favorite but I do it anyway) and I've fallen in love with watercolors. I do extremely detailed work in drawing with graphite and colored pencils, I did try gouache but couldn't get into the chalky look and finish of it, so I'm happy to just stick with watercolors. Even with a limited palette your skills as an artist shines through. It’s amazing the few supplies you used still produced beautiful paintings! Thank you for the information on the two Isaro watercolors and pigment mix alternatives. I think you mentioned in the video you might make a video on buff titanium. I’m curious about the pigment and I cannot figure out it’s purpose. All I can think of is mixing buff titanium with other pigments to make pastel colors.
Thank you! One of my favorite uses for buff titanium is sandy beach scenes, especially to calm down other granulating browns that might be too dark for that like lunar earth pbr11 or geothite. I have also seen it used in portraits as a way to make near-white areas of the skin, but honestly I prefer more transparent paints for layering when painting faces. I'll definitely make a video exploring it a bit more :D

Have the Nordman one along a few other Isaro colors (I live in France and buy directly from Isaro's website - much cheaper) and I have to admit I bought manganese violet (from Schmincke however) to be able to replicate it in bigger washes. (didn't see the separation however I worked from the tubes and my washes are not as diluted)
I will add buff titanium (DS - they have it in my local art shop) to my list, as I keep hearing about it and I'd like to experiment a little more.

These colours are gorgeous! It's nice to see them do a buff titanium mix, I love how it makes these dusty, vintage-like colours. Though oddly enough, I never really managed to get as excited about Isaro paints- I feel like I should get my tubes out and give them another go. Both the paintings turned out lovely!

So fun and a handy reference for the mixtures too! I'm definitely going to play around with different shapes and patterns with some other subjects, though mosaic-tiles and pebble shapes work really well for it. Happy painting :)

Van Gogh buff titanium is merely a hue. It is PBr7 + white. It is not PW6:1.
@@monsoon_magic2874 I know , it's still close in hue and it's the closest thing I can manage to get since Daniel Smith and Roman szmal paints are fairly expensive here.
Funnily enough chemically it would be similar to real buff titanium since it's titanium white with some impurities (the added pbr7 )

I’m totally inspired by the combination of all 4 pigments which, luckily, I have. Todays goal is to make a painting using them because they make such gorgeous mixes. I’m not inspired to go out and buy the premixed Isaro, I’ll use what I have. I think you get a much larger range of colors when mixing yourself, as you’ve highlighted in the bird painting.

So i used to be a strictly black and white- grey scale artist. because color is scary. but i started doing "limited pallets" as a step outside my comfort zone. but now im obsessed with the way limited pallets look.

I just looked at Jane Blundell's blog about mixing with buff titanium. That little bit of extra warmth is a nice addition to pastel colors. I don't have buff titanium but I'll try mixing a little umber with white and see what happens!

I feel like you can't go wrong with pink and green - especially the beautiful minty tones from PG7 and floraly pinks of PR122. Glad you enjoyed the combo too :D
I like PW6:1 and PV16 mixture with the PG7. It’s so pretty.
I've had Isaro for a while. They are beautiful paints if you like that soft muted delicate effect. They are extremely transparent and have a ton of glow. One thing I've discovered though is they do not like to glaze. After a few layers they develop this weird foggy "bloom".. the closest thing I can describe it to is the wax bloom from overworked colored pencils. I have no idea what it is as I've never seen other watercolor do it. They do best going in pretty strong with the first wash so your color values are what you want them to be, mixing wet in wet or dropping in pigment, and a max of two layers.
I find buff titanium to be a wonderful mixing color. I do think Daniel Smith makes the best.. and I'm not a fan of the brand so it really is saying something that I would only repurchase that one. It's heavily granulating.. it harder to see in pure swatches but when mixed it really shows it's stuff. I also think it's more transparent, whether that is from the granulation or not I'm uncertain, I just know it's nowhere near as opaque as what I'm seeing from the swatches here. I use it for beaches, rocks, and backgrounds regularly and would not want to be without it in my granulating palette.

Yeah I saw that, their tiny amount of stock didn't last long after the video started. Isaro is one of those brands they rarely have more than 10-20 tubes of at any time (unline schmincke and white nights where it'll let me put 100-200+ in my cart to test their stock lol). It's too bad though, makes it so I can't make sure they have enough for anyone who wants them after seeing my video. I'm glad you liked them though and maybe poke around with mixtures if you have some single pigments. Happy painting :)

I finally got my hands on some small sample pans of the Tundra granulating set.. and I still prefer my single pigment mixers. I can use the premixes to do a single subject within a painting, but I can use their parts throughout the entire painting and the result is so much nicer, way more cohesion in color, and also much nicer balance in texture.
I bet Jackson's is loving you this month--most of the Isaro colors I just looked at are sold out! :D Wonderful video, as always. That powder pink is calling my name….
It has been a real nightmare trying to time videos for when Jackson's actually has any stock, I hate to recommend things no one can find if they want to buy. While I definitely contributed to the Powdery Pink and Nordmann Green mini rush after this video (they only had about 7 tubes in stock to begin with!) I'm in general noticing a trend of Jackson's going out of stock for a lot of things for a really long time - especially after a sale. Multiple brands of stuff I've been watching to come back in availability has just had an additional month added to the ETA. I think global shipping, supply chain issues and likely the issues in Russia and Ukraine are all making things difficult. I wish the world, stock availability and prices of everything would go back to "normal". Thanks for coming by and until they get it again, have a go with your PR122 and PW6:1 :D
@@KimberlyCrick Hey, Kimberly! Just want to be sure you know that wasn't criticism but praise--your reach is growing! That's a good thing. I, too, would love for the world to go back to something more on the normal side of things. I can be very indecisive when buying paint, so I tend to leave carts full on Jackson's site while I ruminate, add and subtract. And I end up watching things go in and out of stock over time--out more than in on some things, it seems like. I have made my own mixes like the powdery pink before--with regular PW6, usually--and it just seems like it would be nice to have it as convenience. But the green--I never would have come up with that one on my own. I'm definitely going to be trying that one!

You always find the most interesting colors to play with! I only have DS Buff Titanium, I do use it quite a bit for sand and dirt paths. I’d be interested in a comparison of brands, as you pointed out, some versions can look pretty grey.
The base of those two premixes is very close to a mixing complementary which is probably why they get along so well and are so pleasing to the eye.
I really enjoyed this video. I would not have considered these two colors together, but now they make perfect sense to me. I always learn something new about mixing colors and how to use what you already have to duplicate convenience colors. I have been wanting to try Isaro paints, so it was nice to see how they perform. Thank you, I'm glad to hear the database is proving helpful. I will definitely be covering more Isaro colors, I have been really impressed with their recent releases. The only problems I ran into were with particularly weak pigments like ultra pink/vio, cerulean and one of the oldest tubes they made when they were a younger company being a little harder to re-wet. I think Isaro has gotten better with practice and the new colors are beautiful. Happy painting :)

That was very inspiring, thanks! It’s really funny that I just bought my first two Holbein watercolour paints in Shell Pink (PO73, PW6) and Cadmium Green Deep (PY35, PG7, PG18) - quite different from your pink and green, but the succulent painting would still be a great way to try them together!
Oh yes, that paint pairing sounds lovely! I bet there will be a little color separation in the wet washes for that mixture too with the little bit of PG18. Happy painting :)
@@KimberlyCrick The Holbein colours stayed quite separate, surprisingly. I did a mix of pigments for the Isaro colours you used and it was lovely! I now started a little succulent series, trying lots of colour combinations 😊 Thanks so much for the inspiration!
Omg these colours are pretty but your artwork just made them shine! I had my eye on the green for a long time, but haven’t had the chance to buy it. Love all the mixes you created using the four pigments, now I feel like painting using this palette!
That's funny, I always use PR122 + PG7, I adore this mix. It's like my comfort limited palette. I considered buying Buff Titanium for a year or so, too bad I won't be able to buy it for a long time.
Thank you for these ideas! I didn’t have PG7 but used an old sap mix I had. It turned out too yellow which is ok for the experiment. I should pick up a PG7. For the soft pink I tried both PR122’s I had in my palette - a quin mag and an opera rose. They both came out lovely; the quin magenta being the nicest of the two. You’re a treasure to the watercolour world. Thank you.
PG7 kind of gets a bad rap because of it's overuse as a pure green by novices and how super saturated it is.. but it's really a useful color to have. It's used in a ton of convenience mixtures, makes a really great black mixed with cool red, and gorgeous teal and turquoise blues/greens. Since it's staining and transparent try mixing it with granulators for some great effects.

You aren't the only one - there was a time I might have scoffed at buying pastels or struggled to find value for a paint that wasn't either completely transparent or completely opaque so I could use it on black/over other colors. Every so often though, a color just speaks to you and creativity shows us some value :D Have a blast with your color mixing!
@@KimberlyCrick I feel at first I was influenced by RUclipsrs who insisted on only transparent pigments -- but then I read Bruce on Handprint explaining that semi/opaque pigments can be diluted to your desired opacity and how they all have their wonderful uses. And of course everyone seems to make an exception for things like Cobalt Teal, LOL!!

Oooh a Buff Titanium mixture, how scandalous! While not a pigment I go to very often, it does have some neat traits for mixing. I don't believe I've ever thought about what distinguished it from PW6, your explanation that it retains some of the ochre / iron oxides makes perfect sense! Beautiful artwork as always, I really like seeing the range of possible mixtures as a background. Thank you!
It's funny, I was wondering if that part was TMI. Sometimes I'm not sure how much random pigment facts to put in, but I find it fascinating how pigments are made. I'll definitely elaborate more about the Titanium refinement in the spotlight - last I read it was only about 1-2% iron oxide that causes the beige hue. Maybe a good hint on how just a touch of an ochre or umber mixed with a white on your palette may give a similar result!
I also wanted to mention Isaro's payne's grey is quite unique. They use pbk11, PB 15, and PB29 so the blue is much stronger and it's very granulating.
Isaro's Payne's is quite dark valued and that granulation is lovely! I had tried some colors from them over a year ago and it seems like there may have been formula improvements since then, as the new colors re-wet easier and seemed stronger than the old batch. I'll have to thoroughly test the 20ish colors I collected, some colors definitely seem quirkier than others.
I draw mandalas and love your pigment/colours review but this has been sooooo enjoyable to me also for the fantastic view of that colour wheel underneath the parrot! I loved it so much that I want to make it my new way to swatch my watercolours from now on!!! It looks like an amazing porphyry mosaic! 😍🤩 I actually love it so much, either 'cause I love crassula plants and this is one of my favourite colours combo! My I ask you how did you draw the outline of the parrot? with ink, or what? Many many thanks for this video too!
I love the muted colors you mixed! I searched manganese violet in your data base. Da Vinci no longer shows it on their site. I contacted them. It is currently out of production while they work on a new formula. Hopefully it will address the problem you have. Isaro & several other watercolor brands as of today are on sale at Jackson's. Your paintings are both gorgeous!
It's really unfortunate what happened with that PV16. I read that there's long term stability issues if there's any hint of acidity in gum arabic formulations. While I don't think the PH levels are too dramatically low in DV paints (since I haven't had trouble with acid sensitive colors like Ultramarines from them), I hope it will be something they can easily fix about their binder in the future in order to reintroduce the pigment. It's such a beautiful color for mixtures, I feel bad that I'll have to omit DaVinci from being in my upcoming PV16 spotlight video.

Hi Kimberly! This is a very useful video; thank you! A few weeks ago, I got similar results to the Nordmann Green using PG7 mixed with PR176 and again with PR177. Obviously, these are not granulating, so there was no pigment separation. Also, the colours were a little bit on the dull side, which is not a surprise, considering that PR176 and PR177 are near compliments to PG7.
I'm curious what brands you won't mix on a palette. My paints were all separated by brand but I kept looking for certain colors from DS and Qor so I finally just combined them. I also added two W & N and one Schmincke. I sold my Sennelier, honey based is just not my thing, and slightly expanded my only brand stand alone palette of Holbein and now I couldn't be happier. I finally feel content with my palettes.

Because I prefer slow disperse rate paints, I avoid mixing qor in with my other brands. I also have found that honey based paints (particularly m graham more so than sennelier or white nights) require more water to avoid backruns/blooms from drying at different rates in wet washes. So In general, mainly mgraham and qor don't get mixed with my other paints with the exception of mg viridian pg18 which I make an exception for due to it's unusual intensity. I have been hearing some artists having issues with flocculation/gritty texture issues when certain brands chemical biocide preservatives mix, I have yet to see it myself but wnewton and dsmith together have been questioned.

OT but FYI: amazon is selling Miya Himi watercolor tube sets, I've never seen the tubes before.
They've just re-styled the outer box on their old tube sets that have been around a few years ( www.amazon.com/MIYA-Watercolor-Painting-Tube-Colors/dp/B07PDG3BZ7 ) which rightfully don't get talked about much since they are a pretty poor kids/bargain/arteza level watercolor and gouache option. They are weak, chalky and crack terribly as they dry (on palette while working and definitely not good for use in pan).

Have you done any lightfast testing on colored pens? I've heard the reds in the Pigma Microns are fugitive.... but I really don't care to fuss with loose ink. I do enjoy colors other than black and do a lot of line and wash.
Yes, I had fading in Micron reds so I tested Copic multiliners as an alternative - which I'm happy to say the Sakura pink and wine reds were lightfast. Copic seems like a good alternative to the R&K SketchInk or other loose ink for dip/technical pens.
