Hey everyone ! The Z 6ii and Z 7ii are here ! iv spent quite a lot of time with both of these cameras and I think they are a really great and considered upgrade for the Z 6 and Z 7 range. ! if you have any questions or would like me to test anything in particular then let me know in the comments below ! Thanks so much for watching. Also please ignore my concentration face in the Af examples ;) haha
@@championthewonderhorse9733 Absolutely agree. I used to subscribe to those three but not for some time now. Northrop seems hell bent on wishing Nikon into bankruptcy, and Polin, well, I can't work out what planet he is from!! Ricci talks a lot of sense and good supported factual information, as does Matt Irwin, another positive and unbiased reviewer.
The software features like the new autofocus menu, reverse focus ring, long exposures should be added to the current Z6/Z7. That doesn't require 2 processors or anything like that.
@Monster FueledI bought the Z6 for the big mount and I saw updates thought there's gonna be big updates, but I've kinda been disappointed. :). I like it but it could be better.
Agreed, half of these changes or more are what have been requested, by Z6/7 users. 900s shutter, Eye AF in different modes, reduced display info. Seems like Z6/7 owners were actually beta testers. Now they’ve repackaged it for the grip/card slot moaners and used the feedback from the beta testers for UI improvements which they could’ve added to the original bodies. Instead chose to save them as “features” and sell it again
100% true but the are so ignorant and they won’t do it because there won’t be enough differentiation between last and new models they have to charge premium for it. Those feature will appear in z6 and z7 in a year or maybe even later after the launch of the mark 2s
@@Justin-ny6un Justin for gosh sakes, not so - the Z6 and Z7 were the first Nikon Mirrorless and they are AMAZING cameras in their own right. Also, they are worth having just for the Z glass alone - best lenses I have ever used and I'm a part time pro photographer. First time out for Nikon and they did an AMAZING job. No one who owns a Z6 feels cheated, all of my colleagues who have these cameras love them.
@@lcador9 At a substantial distance all you need is good face acquisition. Because depth of field is so deep that your eye and nose and the rest will all be in focus anyway ..
@@praetorian65 I use the G1. I have compared the G2 with my G1 and the G2 isn't really that better imo. Even a video done by FStoppers confirm the same. They did a comparison of the G1, G2 and the Nikon VR2.
The Z 24-70 2.8 pushed the Tamron G2 to the curb also and I loved that Tamron. Adapted lens just don't function as well. I only had the Nikon 70-200 f/4 which is excellent but with the Z 70-200 f/2.8 in the bag it is more then worth the extra size and weight. Also, since 200mm is the longest native focal length, I can use a 1.4TC and have a native short range BIF alternative. I hope the Z7 II will offer improved performance with this combination and that longer glass starts coming. If I had only specialized in macro or selfies my bank account would be much larger.
No 70-200 on the market can match the S. Of course, law of diminishing returns. Tamron's G2 is a lot cheaper, whether the better quality of the S and better ergonomics is worth that extra $$$ is up to the user.
Where did you order it? I got a Nikon d850 last year on Amazon for $95 on prime day. Bwahahahaha! Score of a lifetime! I preordered the z6ii from nikon store. If af has improved I will trade my d850 for z7ii.
Got the same deal. My confirmation email came at 1:01am eastern so the full checkout process happened within 1 minute of it becoming available. Not sure if it was a presale deal for launch or an error. I do know it was advertised at that price and they processed my card. So I’m going with they were okay with 90% of MSRP (plus I got the 3 year damage coverage) so it came in right at $3k with tax.
Z6II is interesting, going to have to see if there's focus improvements to really make me upgrade from the Z6. Not that the Z6 is bad, but improvements are improvements. There's a few things menu wise that I hope trickle down to the Z6, I can't see any reason why they wouldn't. Selecting face/eye/animal eye detect as part of the focus mode select, longer exposure timer to name a couple. I wouldn't mind if the AF wide/face/eye detect made it too, but maybe that's some kind of processing limit, same with eye detect in video. But please, Nikon, can we ditch the 30m record limit already? :D Great stuff Ricci, thanks!
Definitely will be adding a Z6II to my two D5 bodies, for a total of three cameras again, just sold my D4s to afford to buy the grip and Z6II. I'm mainly finally buying the Z6II due to it now having a full battery grip and faster fps, buffer, etc. I need the Z6II to be able to shoot like my D5 bodies do, without the herky jerkey 12fps and low buffer. Obviously better AF tracking is another big decision that matters to me, and why I didn't buy the original Z6 that I had tested. As long as the Z6II with battery grip works closely enough to my D5 bodies, I'll be very happy, I know there will be major differences here and there, but I just need it to perform close to as well and not slow me down. Good on Nikon and I'm sure I'll one day own the Z9, but until then I'm looking forward to quite shutter only, san mirror for situations where I need that, since I'm a photojournalist that would be press conferences, PGA Golf, etc.
@@gabrielh7718 I don't think I'll be buying any Z-mount glass, just because I'm already treated out quite well. I have the 500mm f4E VR FL, 70-200mm f2.8E VR FL, 24-70mm f2.8E VR, 16-35mm f4 VR. So FTZ adapter and I already own some of the sharpest lenses Nikon ever made and I got lucky with my 24-70mm VR, it's very sharp wide open edge to edge on my D5 bodies. My 70-200mm FL and 500mm FL are ridiculously sharp edge to edge at f4 and the 70-200mm is very sharp also wide open. There is no equivalent Z-mount lens that is worlds better or even noticeably better than the lenses I use everyday, with exception to 16-35mm, which I don't use and don't really even care for. I should sell that and maybe get one native lens, the newer 20mm f1.8S, would be a maybe lens for me and ditch the 16-35mm.
@@patricksmith2553 Similar boat for me but with the 500mm PF. I use the D5 rather than my Z7 because focusing speed and other aspects of the auto focus system perform more efficiently. I believe this is due to, a large extent, to dual processors in the D5 and not having to use a lens adapter. My hope is the Z7 II will improve AF performance for fast action shooting so I can use the available 45 megapixels. Shame that Nikon to date has not delivered a native super-telephoto. If they had or do would you be tempted?
No I would not be tempted at this point by a native Z-mount telephoto, but I hear their is going to be 400mm f2.8 S first. I am a big fan of that type of lens and have owned most versions of it, however I’m now using the 500mm f4E FL. What would tempt me more is if the Z6 II works better AF wise and with the FTZ. The Z6 with FTZ worked ok with the 400mm f2.8 VR and 500mm f4 E VR FL, but not great. Canons adapter AF wise was for some reason is better than Nikons. I tried the EOS R and now R5 with my colleagues 400mm f2.8 IS III lens it worked almost flawlessly, very fast. Unfortunately the FTZ is somehow not as good, not sure why or how but it could be a number of reasons. So I’m mainly hoping for the Z6II to perform closer to my D5’s even when adapting lenses. We’ll see soon I guess, lol! The Z9 does not sound tempting, I got rid of my D850 and don’t want a high megapixel flagship camera!
Patrick, thank you for the detailed responses which I found very helpful. Our needs and views seem to differ on but a single way. Unfortunately, I am a bit addicted to BIF and post cropping is benefited by the 45 megapixels of the Z/7. I love my 500mm PF but also am disappointed when adapted to the Z7. It is wonderful on my DSLRs but the smaller and lighter form factor of the Z7 benefits my aging body. Perhaps the AF in the Z7 II will be improved with adapted lenses, hope, hope....
You said that tracking AF is still available at the top 12-bit FPS. Can you confirm that please? I had the impression that these cameras only have AF-S at top speed, and C-AF at 5.5 FPS. I am not an owner; just trying to clarify in my mind. What I am hoping is that the dual processors allow the cameras to shoot at the top burst speed with continuous AF focus, and also that the EVF does not start slowing down it's refresh rate at top burst speed. Are you able to comment on this please?
In my video I said that upgrading (I have 2 Z6s) would probably mean liquidating my last DSLR (D800) and "going all in" with the mirrorless cameras. Tempted by the new Z7II for landscapes. That extended long exposure would free me from the calculator and remote.
I started shooting a Nikon F2 back in the 70s when I was a teen, switched to sony in 2017 but never like the color. Glad I kept a Nikon Df and all the lenses and it’s time to ditch sony and enter the Nikon z world.
Hi! I also stated way back in the 80's, got into photography again just 2 yrs ago with an old digital, D700 Nikon body. I still have my beloved 105mm f/2.5 lens given by my wife as a gift. Photography have progress quiet a long way. . if given the opportunity, I would like to get a Z II ... thanks for your sharing. God bless.
Thanks Ricci. Really useful overview. The comparison I most want to see is Z 6 vs Z 7 ii. I’m happy with my Z 6 for theatre / low light work, and my understanding was that it is better suited for that kind of work than the Z 7. I’m looking for a second body, so what I really wanted to know is: how will the Z 7 ii low light performance (AF performance and image noise / quality) compare to the Z 6? I’m tempted by the higher resolution sensor, but I need at least comparable low light performance.
Thanks for a very clear and useful vlog of these new cameras. As a long term Nikon user - this is most useful - instead of the usual Nikon is dead - rather buy a buy a XYZ cr*p.
Interesting stuff! As an early adopter and owner of a Z6 and Z7, something I'd really like to know is whether there will now be any further firmware updates for those cameras incorporating features from the new models that don't require dual processors... I'd also love to know if the options for button customisation have been expanded? eg. the ability to assign a button for AF+Area as we had on DSLRs..? Hopefully that'll be something you cover in your next in-depth review.
@@AK-de3ej well yeah, obviously we won’t be able to use the firmware of the new cameras in the old versions, but hopefully Nikon will release firmware for the older ones that bring some of these new features, since they done all /need/ the dual processors to be implemented... you know, like a nice gift to the loyal early adopters :D
you all prolly dont give a damn but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost the login password. I would love any tips you can offer me!
@Baker Alec I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I have been saying that for a long time, and Nikon knows how landscape photographers desperately need this feature, but they are so ignorant and arrogant that they add couple of new features to the camera and put a new price tag on it and call the camera pro. They can add this feature to z bodies via firmware, they just don’t want to because there won’t be enough difference between last camera models. Feature that Fuji had for years
As a long time Z6 user, the two features that excite me the most are the longer exposure times, and how the viewfinder turns off automatically when the viewscreen is pulled out.
Ricci, thanks a lot for your great videos! I own a Z7 and several Z-lenses, and what should I say: I am just happy with the Z-system. At the moment there is no real need for an upgrade to a Z7II, but I consider buying a Z6II because of its better low light performance and as a backup for my Z7. My question is, do the L-Brackets for Z6/Z7 also fit on the Z6II/Z7II?
Ricci, thanks for the very helpful video. When you do one on the menu systems, I'd be interested to know if the Fn1 and Fn2 buttons can be programmed to switch between AF modes, as can be done with the D850, for example (depress the button and it instantly changes modes, no sub-command dial needed). That is very useful for wildlife and something I sorely miss on my Z6.
There's going to be plenty of folk bemoaning these new cameras but from my perspective as a D750 & D850 shooter, Nikon will be adding me to the Z mount fold soon. The dual card slots and proper grip seal the deal for me, any other improvements are icing on the cake. I would say that these versions should have been what Nikon released when the Z6/Z7 were originally launched but hey, better late than never. lol. The Z6II will be my gateway into Z mount for sure 👍
I'm in the same boat. Currently use a D750 which still works great. I tried all the Z lenses today and was blown away with the sharpness and rendering. Just so good. Itching to make the switch but the current COVID situation had reduced work coming in so have to wait for a while.
Good set of additional info that wasn’t part of the spec sheet, like the evf not turning on when the monitor is pulled out, or the lack of video backup to two cards, not crucial but good to know for sure , looking forward to next videos
I really like the implementation of face and eye detection into the wide area mode, that's definitely something that needs to be seen in action rather than read about in a feature list/spec sheet, it makes allot more sense to me now. The extra card slot doesn't make as much of a difference to me anyway but I do like that there will now be a vertical grip option Fantastic video as always, will there be anymore videos on the 70-200 with the teleconverters?
I am sold after seeing faster & acurate face & eye tracking,wide-L eye af, that evf deactivation while screen flipped out, longer shutter speeds & one another amazing feature you forgot to mention that Z5 & D780 also share, simultaneous raw+video output in interval timer timelapse 🔥🔥
Can't wait for the next video or two. I'd like to know if Nikon improved the User settings banks: adding drive mode to the saved settings, and powering back on with all last-used settings like the DSLRs did. Z6 and Z7 reverted to the User settings after power off/on so if you changed anything as you went about your shooting, those settings are gone. Really disorienting.
No mention of the EVF blackout? I sold my Z camera recently simply because I couldn’t track a fast moving subject due to the blackout when shooting at high speed.
Thanks for the very clear and thorough breakdown of the updates. They look fantastic, as a satisfied Z6 owner I don't think I will upgrade to a Z6II right now, but would consider a Z7II if I start taking on more work that requires the resolution. In the mean time I will continue changing more of my lens lineup to the S lenses-your videos have definitely helped me see how much of a difference the new glass makes.
Great overview. I look forward to your review of improvements to AF tracking for wildlife once you can test properly. A year ago, you showed a timeline for lenses. Of particular interest was the S line 100-400mm lens. Do you have an idea indication of when it might be available?
Things I would love to see in the test of the Z6ii: 1. Eye Af vs Canon R6 vs Sony a7iii 2. IBIS vs Canon R6 is the difference relevant for the real world usage 3. Color vs the original Z6 (compare 2 photos with the same settings especially for skin tones)
I currently use the Z7 and hoping when the Z7 iii comes out it has a fully articulating screen and the extended shutter times can be changed from fixed values to infinitely variable times like on the canon r5. 🙂
Wow... Lots of new videos to catch up on now, thanks to these announcements. I appreciate your thoughts on the Z6 II and Z7 II, and look forward to hearing from you again when you get a production model in your hands. Thank you!
Unfortunately, I have yet to hear anything about an improvement to the EVF refresh rate... it would also be really nice to get "recall shooting" added. I guess I'm stuck waiting for the Z9... but even then, I'm not optimistic based on what has come out so far.
I pre ordered z6ii, trading the z6 for it. Two card slots, better low light AF and vertical grip is reason enough for me. If they made the AF better I will trade my d850 for z7ii. My local camera store is giving me $1250 for my z6 which I think is fair.
As a landscape and studio stills hobbyist I can't find the use case requirement for mirrorless. Sure the WYSIWYG on the back of the camera is nice, but I have that on the D850 when I need it and when I don't the battery life isn't impacted when I look through the optical viewfinder. Focus? I do most of that manually. Exposure? I do that manually too. The only reason for me to switch is image quality, and there again the D850 is still better. Maybe, in a few more years when the Z lenses are filled out and we have a 60+ megapixel sensor I'll have to move.
Thanks for your always appreciated breakdown on the new goodies :) Having a Z 6 already I think my personal conclusion is to buy glass and wait until next year for the next level body (Z 8/9) and newly added tele primes to fully ditch my beloved D500s. I may also consider the Z 7 II but I don't see a reason to replace my Z 6 with the Z 6 II.
Hi, thank you for the informative video. Would you be able to clarify what's the FPS on Z7 in H (not H+)? What's the maximum frame rate you can get with tracking? How's the blackout compared to 1st gen (both Z6 and Z7)? As a current Z6 owner (+ 6 lenses) - are there any future firmware upgrades planned, or the hardware is maxed out and we shouldn't count on any future AF-C improvements?
Seems to be some nice upgrades for photos and the prices are very reasonable. I wish Nikon would have done more for video to appeal to more users. Flip screen, 10bit, more bit rate options, uncropped 4k60. The autofocus is so good in video I think they missed the mark. As a mainly photo shooter the Z6 has been very good for me and the mkII looks great.
Very interesting summary, and I look forward to your full review. As my main interests are studio portrait photography and land/city/seascapes I don't think I will need to upgrade just yet as the Z6 and Z7 are fantastically capable cameras, particularly since the v3 firmware release. However, I will wait for your review of the production models before finally deciding.
A BIG question is whether Nikon can tell us if you have fixed the Custom menu options for key controls, ie to assign AF-On + AF Mode to Fn1 / Fn2 etc? Firmware should have been fixed these glaring gaps in the Z6 and Z7, BUT Nikon persistently ignored this deficiency. The ability to switch AFC modes 'On the Fly' is a most powerful feature. It has been available in the D500 and D850 ie since 2016. [Thom Hogan just made a similar, slanted comment at this today in his Zsystemuser post]
Autofocus tracking for wildlife is most important for me. The Zs have lagged behind for distance for initial acquisition, making it far less efficient for birds and fast moving ground creatures. How does the Z7 II compare with the likes of the R5 which I find to be outstanding? Again, outstanding video.
Ricci will never answer at questions related to others brands; cameras or lenses. Ricci is from Nikon School. He gives u onest review and opinion only about Nikon products. PS: i wasn't at english class so pardon my english.
Hey Ricci - thanks for the awesome videos. I wondered if you can tell me if there is any speed difference between the original Z's and the mkii's in terms of how fast the viewfinder comes on. Not in terms of it coming on from flipping the camera on switch but when using the eye sensor. So raising your eye to the viewfinder. In the original Z's, although quite quick there is a very small delay. I wonder if this has improved. Whilst not important to most, its important to me and there have been a few occasions in use where ive quicky raised the camera to my eye and miss a split second moment through not being able to see whats happening straight away. Whilst this is a rare occurance, and correct me if im wrong, The Z6/Z7, at least with the original mk i's, you cant put the viewfinder to always ON, you can have it so its viewfinder only or priorty but it always uses the eye sensor to come on and off - I know this is to save battery life of course.
Thank you Ricci. Based on my style and use, my Z6 still fits for me. The one thing I am really interested in is the improvement to the AF Eye detect system. Based on your samples here I am underwhelmed. Yes, the large area AF is nice; but when watching your outdoor movements it was clear that the eye detect was not finding you when you stepped away from the camera. Now maybe zoom lenses would be better from a distance; but the sample did not pick up your eye unless you were close to the camera. If this is actually the case, then I will wait for future improvements or cameras that will bring up AF Eye detect to the level of Sony. Looking forward to your next installment.
I own the Z6 and love it. The new version has nice features, but I was only willing to upgrade for a flip out screen. Unfortunately Nikon neglected this (again). Is such a pain to take photos in portrait from a low or high angle. So I wait for the Z6iii
As an Olympus User who watches Nikon closely as Switch option if Oly doesn’t get going respectively the New JIP isn’t going anywhere’s. One question however is somehow a real surprise. Why isn’t there a HighRess mode? Its were useful, at least on the Oly (Tripod and also Handheld).
I had a question about the Prores/blackmagic raw update for the Z6ii/7ii and I would like to know if getting that update for the Nikon camera would be like having a blackmagic image in a Nikon camera? Thank you.
I was hoping that the Z II bodies would have also included better AF. I mean it's better than the gen 1, but still lags Sony for some tracking features, which is a bit of a letdown. My hope is that over the next year or two, Nikon can improve this and get this at least to par with some of the competition, as I feel currently the second processor maybe isn't doing much, unless you're doing burst shooting. EVF lag is another thing I would like to see improved. It's improved on the Z II's but still needs works. Again, hopefully this can be done with firmware. I'm also curious if both processors are being utilized to their fullest or not.
Hello Ricci, Thanks for this first look video. For future Z6/Z7 vs. Z6 II/Z7 II video's I'd like to see what improvements the second Expeed processor has brought to the AF performance. Has the AF in general become faster, is the Eye AF and Face AF better/faster and more reliable (catches the face or eye faster/earlier), and if the AF follows the subject better/faster when compared to the original Z6/Z7 models (with firmware 3.0 or later). Do these new II's 'wake up' faster, activate the viewfinder and respond faster? I've had a Z6 (with Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S) for about 8-9 month. I shoot concerts and have found the Z6's response sometimes a bit too slow, though I got some great shots with it (you can see some of my photos in the recently released live album "Third Stage" by the band Flying Colors). I sold my Z6 and purchased a D780 when Covid-19 hit and shows were cancelled. But I miss the WYSIWYG concept of shooting with a mirrorless and I believe that mirrorless is the future. I'll most likely buy a Z camera in the future, but if this will be sooner or later depends on whether Nikon has improved on some of the performance issues I've mentioned above.
Hey Ricci, congrats on the 20K. Great video and very helpful. I am currently a Fuji shooter but would like to move back to Full Frame. I looked at the Z6 when it first came and out but the 1 slot thing just bothered me. I was a D750 shooter when I went to Fuji and loved my Nikon so looking forward to the move back. I am borrowing Z6 soon to do a side by side test shoot with my Fuji gear and that will be the proof in the pudding. SO hopefully I will be back to being Nikon shooter, also subscribed. Thanks, for the content!! Mark...
Hope some features will make it to z6/z7 firmware too and reward people who have already invested in the Z system and in that way demonstrate that Nikon cares about its customer base
I hope the 50 F1.2 S tests will be done with Z6/7 ii with a model and face/eye detection. Can it keep up with any moderate fast movement of the pretty standard portrait photoshoot wide open. But it looks like it's not mr. Ricci cup of tea. Either way, thanks for the honest preview.
Have been wanting to go mirrorless but I shoot wildlife with a D850 and a D500. My question would be could I sell my D850 and go with the Z7II and have basically the same capability for most everything except maybe really fast BIF where I could use my D500. I can see lots of advantages to mirrorless but the Z7 was just not fast enough for me. I also use custom buttons on the DSLR's to switch focus modes instantly and the Z6/7 didn't offer that. Hopefully something similar is possible now on the mark II's or maybe it wont even be needed. Really appreciate your efforts and you are IMO one of the best places for Nikon info on RUclips.
I'm in the same position. Really don't wanna sell either my D850 or my D500 but I suspect I'll have to at some point. Just waiting for AF on mirrorless system to be as capable as DSLRs
As an owner of a Z6 ive been eagerly awaiting news on the AF upgrades, I know these are only preproduction units, but in stills has your experience been so far that the AF works better? Just because when I choose to shoot wildlife with say the 200-500 on the Z6 ive been majorly annoyed with its lackluster AF
Hey, Please do an animal eye detect test once you get hands on the production units. Earlier the software was limited to pets like cats and dogs. Just wanted to understand if there is further enhancement in this field such as bird eye etc
Interesting video. I was disappointed by the Nikon presentation regarding AF. Looking at your trials, it seems the eye AF on selected area is quite good, which makes it usable for me (running people). How do you adjust the AF area ?
Hi Ricci. Excellent heads up and insight into the new cameras. Really pleased that the timer has been improved and really hoping the AF improvements are significantly just that. One extra feature from the D850 which was missing on the Z7 was the 1.2x crop factor selection, which as a nature photographer I find exceptionally useful - Does it appear on the Z7.2? If not it needs to be. Looking forward to the deep delve.
That was quite comprehensive and good enough for me to decide on which body will work for me. I primarily shoot birds and wildlife, preferring action, with the D500 & D850. I was looking for a good body to shoot video, I presently use my D810, because it permits back button focus when tracking slow flying birds and you answered that very well. Thank you. I will wait for the Z9 for my action work, if it has the megapixels to support crops. A question I am looking to get an answer for, is how much lag is there in the view finder and how it will affect my on the wing images of fast flying birds. Great video!
I'd love a ISO64 cleanness and dynamic range test, especially against other competitors, it baffles me that other cameras don't let you go down to below 100. Also what the editability of the 4K60 footage is like.
I've been a D750 shooter for over 5 years now. I love that camera. I haven't felt a need to upgrade until I saw what eye-AF can do. I mostly do Portraits and headshots. I've never done video. Sometimes I'll do events/weddings. I'd like to be able to do kids sporting events here and there, but that's it. I played with the z6/z7 at my local bestbuy and realized it's too small for my hands without a vertical grip. I can't go back to a camera without a vertical grip so I couldn't go to the first Z cameras. If these cameras have eye-AF that is good, useable, and reliable I want one. I'm just not sure which one to get. z6II or z7II. For someone who only shoots stills that mostly does portraits/headshots and occasionally events and sports which is the better option? in the Z7II I like the idea of 64ISO, no OLPF, and greater MP for cropping, but it's slower FPS and large file size worries me. Can you or anyone with Z experience give me some insight? Thanks!
I moved from the D750 to the Z6 (from the beginning). The focus speed of the D750 is a bit faster than the Z6 but overall I am very happy with the Z system. The size and weight is a joy and the Z lenses are 👌👌👌
With wide area focus eye focus will the camera keep hold of the eye if the subject moves out of the wide area if you have the shutter release half pressed? In other words can you use the wide af area to help select the desired face and then yu half press the shutter and keep the eye in focus if you recompose beyond the wide area box or if the subject moves out of the box?
Dual processors not enable more performance now, My bet is that over the next two years the FW updates will enable a lot of incremental improvements like we have seen with the Z6I
It seems to me like the original 6/7 could handle a couple of these upgrades. Like the ability to switch the focus direction and the eye detection in large area, or at least the ability to access those options from the i-menu, right? Am I just crazy? And if not what are the chances they get added to the originals via firmware?
Looks extremely impressive even for pre-production models :) Thank you for the AF demonstration and I think the Auto-Area Eye option is a great addition as it will allow us to pick out specific faces in amongst a crowd of other faces. One thing you may have left out is the improved low light performance including sophisticated back-illuminated design (both censors) to deliver an improved high ISO noise performance and low light AF capabilities. Perhaps you could conduct some low light test as well in your upcoming videos. For me the AF improvements with low light performance as well as great video capabilities as well as the Nikon ergonomics as well as Nikon's approach to consistent feature packed firmware upgrades all represent even better value for money and are all real selling point and I am already hooked. I look forward to your upcoming videos with production models and additional test :)
Ricci, I think the only thing that would tempt me to upgrade from Z6 to Z6II is if it had a better microphone amplifier. I cannot use my Z6 as a sound recorder. Could you test that please?
Fantastic updates can’t wait to see what the Z9 brings to the table. If Nikon nailed the AF down and the Z7II, Z6II are as good as Sony and Canon regarding Eye AF and tracking them Nikon is solid.
hello, Ricci. it would be very interesting as the autofocus z6II/ z7 II works with Third Party Lenses. I use the Sigma 500mm f4 Sports at my D500 and D750 and I am not very satisfied with the auto focus trekking.
How many companies have a vertical grip that has hot swappable batteries? Well done Nikon. Ricci thank you for the fantastic content - Looking forward to your next video. Stay safe - Chris.
yeh, no more losing the rubber contact covers, or their partners on the grips themselves:-)) and good one for following on that style of attachment, does this mean the FIRST mb-n10 is compatible with these cameras as well, so that videographers use the mb-n10 and the still guys use the mb-n11 grip model, so if you want buttons get one, or for hot swap batteries get the other, would make a nice choice for this system and only add to it's versatility.
I hope the new AF improvements will be made available for the Z5 through a firmware update, that would be gr8. I guess the dual cpu is not required for this.
Always enjoy your videos. Your video in the 24-70 2.8 S was a big factor in me purchasing it. And I appreciate how you talk about the gear like a normal organized person, unlike a lot of RUclipsrs who come off like a salesperson at a conference booth. I’m sure you get this asked a lot, just curious how you get this gear earlier than anyone else? That’s some next level stuff right there.
I assumed if Animal Eye detection is on, Human Eye detection is on too. Should I be switching back to Human if no dogs or cats are present? 😬 Was also hoping that Subject Tracking would get its own selectable mode (not just a subset of Auto Area AF). LOVE the internal battery grip contacts, much better approach (like my old D200!). Thanks for an interesting & informative video as always!
Always like your videos and I have been directing people from my channel to your reviews that ask me about certain things on Nikon cameras that I don't have or don't review. Great work, very informative as always. I am now committed to the Nikon system especially after buying the 70-200mm F2.8 Z mount lens after watching your videos about it, that convinced me, thanks..
Hi Ricci, thank you for the great video. You definitely answered some questions I had. I’ve currently got a z7 and shoot mostly landscape, I do encounter PDAF banding on my z7 at ISO64 - 100 on strongly backlit and high dynamic range scenes when even modestly bringing up shadows (no crazy 5 stop pushes). I’d be curious if Nikon has solved this issue in the z7II - apparently the new z5 doesn’t have this issue so I’m hopeful. Thanks again.
Hey Ricci, can you tell me something about the high iso performance of the Z 7ll? Better / same as the Z 7 or same as the Z 6? Thank you.
Compare this to the usual clickbait bilge from Polin, Northrup, Granger etc. Night and day.
What were the custom settings for the Eye-AF test for a3, g4, and g5 (from the z6 menu)?
The software features like the new autofocus menu, reverse focus ring, long exposures should be added to the current Z6/Z7. That doesn't require 2 processors or anything like that.
@Monster FueledI bought the Z6 for the big mount and I saw updates thought there's gonna be big updates, but I've kinda been disappointed. :). I like it but it could be better.
@Monster Fueled how do you know that... as nobody tested them yet... ;)
The eye AF inside the wide AF field is a real handy extension of that function!
The eye tracking is impressively fast and accurate.
I observed it to still lock on to eyes at not a substantial distance.
@@lcador9 At a substantial distance all you need is good face acquisition. Because depth of field is so deep that your eye and nose and the rest will all be in focus anyway ..
I tried the 70-200 2.8 S today and damn what a sharp lens. I currently use a Tamron 70-200 and its no match for the S lens.
G2?
Interesting. Is that the Tamron G2? I may need to consider my upgrade priorities.
I think what everyone wants to know will be the autofocus improvement of both cameras. I pre ordered a z7ii which was priced at 2697$
Where was z7ii already discounted?
@@CO8848_2 i think it was a mistake on their part. I just checked and They just changed it again to 2999$ . I hope they honor their mistake
@@FamilyofTech Yeah, rooting for you, nicely done, mate.
Great stuff Ricci, thanks!
Watch the DP review. There's some good changes made, the banding is almost gone, eye focus is better and faster, and you don't need CFE cards lol
Eye autofocus isnt a big problem for me , i survived 30 yrs without it
Now the Z6/7 are done right!! That proper battery grip too...
You are going to be in for a treat once you get some native Z glass
God bless.
Nikon F90x here....the beauty of Nikon are all the lenses available new and old 😀
I'm with you A H. Nikon since mid 70s....tried Sony mid 2019, did not like color at all, or the menus....back to Z for good.
Im pretty happy with my Z7 but I would think about getting a Z6ii.
i am happy with my z6.. the only thing that's tempting is that 900 sec long exposure
the z 6 is still a fantastic camera and it doesn't stop working with a new model :)
Hi, is it a good upgrade from Z7 to z7ii for wildlife photographer specially hearing the improved auto focus and animal eye detection.
I think using firmware from new models will not be adaptable to old Z7/Z6.
@Rylan Kody instablaster :)
@Baker Alec I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Omg....I really hope the long shutter speed is coming to a z6/z7 via firmware
Thanks ! Hope you are doing well !
Honest, down to earth and remarkably clear presentation! In short another great Ricci talk! Thanks very much Sir!
Thanks so much :)
I really like the implementation of face and eye detection into the wide area mode, that's definitely something that needs to be seen in action rather than read about in a feature list/spec sheet, it makes allot more sense to me now.
The extra card slot doesn't make as much of a difference to me anyway but I do like that there will now be a vertical grip option
Fantastic video as always, will there be anymore videos on the 70-200 with the teleconverters?
Thanks for watching !
Yes Iv got some great shots with the 70-200 and the TC’s Iv got sooo much content so little time 🤣
I am sold after seeing faster & acurate face & eye tracking,wide-L eye af, that evf deactivation while screen flipped out, longer shutter speeds & one another amazing feature you forgot to mention that Z5 & D780 also share, simultaneous raw+video output in interval timer timelapse 🔥🔥
Was waiting for your video!
me too
No mention of the EVF blackout? I sold my Z camera recently simply because I couldn’t track a fast moving subject due to the blackout when shooting at high speed.
Thanks for the very clear and thorough breakdown of the updates. They look fantastic, as a satisfied Z6 owner I don't think I will upgrade to a Z6II right now, but would consider a Z7II if I start taking on more work that requires the resolution. In the mean time I will continue changing more of my lens lineup to the S lenses-your videos have definitely helped me see how much of a difference the new glass makes.
I wonder if the banding issue is fixed. Boosting exposure and shadows sometimes shows banding in shadows.
Apparently the Z5 doesn't have this issue, so one can hope...
I do see this banding occasionally on my Z6.
Great overview. I look forward to your review of improvements to AF tracking for wildlife once you can test properly. A year ago, you showed a timeline for lenses. Of particular interest was the S line 100-400mm lens. Do you have an idea indication of when it might be available?
The time line for the 100-400 was always before the end of 2021 so I’m expecting it next year at some point !
Things I would love to see in the test of the Z6ii:
1. Eye Af vs Canon R6 vs Sony a7iii
2. IBIS vs Canon R6 is the difference relevant for the real world usage
Thank you!
Great coverage. Please don't forget the 14-24 f/2.8 S review.
Certainly haven’t I have sooo many videos coming up
As always, an excellent and well presented review. You always make the information clear and easy to understand.
Thanks for watching !
While I have already ordered my replacement cameras via nps pre order, your overview was confirming of the decision. Great job Ricci!
Thanks for watching :)
Unfortunately, I have yet to hear anything about an improvement to the EVF refresh rate... it would also be really nice to get "recall shooting" added. I guess I'm stuck waiting for the Z9... but even then, I'm not optimistic based on what has come out so far.
Amazing cameras. If they released those cameras two years ago, I would have bought it.
Great series of videos on the Z& ii (and Z6). Made me feel very good about pre-ordering.
I pre ordered z6ii, trading the z6 for it. Two card slots, better low light AF and vertical grip is reason enough for me. If they made the AF better I will trade my d850 for z7ii. My local camera store is giving me $1250 for my z6 which I think is fair.
A big question is - will there be features, that will be introduced to the Z6 and Z7 via Firmware.
Some would make sence to mix the cameras on set.
Thanks Ricci for always giving us an honest no BS review!
Thanks for another excellent video Ricci. Looking forward to all the other vieo's you have planned.
Thanks so much !
Certainly gonna be really interesting to see what comes out next year ;)
Hi, thank you for the informative video.
Looks great and thanks but I'm not finding any CC on this video?
Looks like a great camera but how does it stack up to the D850? Is it time to change?
Hello Ricci,
Thanks for this first look video.
Ive seen your other reviews and you deserve way more than 20k subs
With that dual processor we know that Nikon can improve and add new features in the upcoming firmware updates!
Awesome material. Subbed. 7II ORDERED
Lovely video and well done. I am buying one and will be coming from a D90. yes I said a D90 and looking forward to it.
Z6 II and 100-400mm
I'm very excited or
The 200-600
Me too !
@@RicciTalks Hi did you try the camera with any non Z lens?
Looks extremely impressive even for pre-production models :)
Thank you for the AF demonstration and I think the Auto-Area Eye option is a great addition as it will allow us to pick out specific faces in amongst a crowd of other faces.
Thanks for watching Chris !
Hi Ricci Looking to buy one of these so your video was great and informative.
yeh, no more losing the rubber contact covers, or their partners on the grips themselves:-)) and good one for following on that style of attachment, does this mean the FIRST mb-n10 is compatible with these cameras as well, so that videographers use the mb-n10 and the still guys use the mb-n11 grip model, so if you want buttons get one, or for hot swap batteries get the other, would make a nice choice for this system and only add to it's versatility.
Mb-n10 is indeed compatible
I hope the new AF improvements will be made available for the Z5 through a firmware update, that would be gr8. I guess the dual cpu is not required for this.
Great Video, the Af looks super impressive and it's awesome to be able to limit the focus areas. Thanks for another great vid Ricci!
Awww man Jasin thanks so much ! Hope you keeping well !
@@RicciTalks Yes sir, I can't wait to get my 6ii on my next film set!
Excellent video with very good information
Always enjoy your videos. Your video in the 24-70 2.8 S was a big factor in me purchasing it. And I appreciate how you talk about the gear like a normal organized person, unlike a lot of RUclipsrs who come off like a salesperson at a conference booth.
I’m sure you get this asked a lot, just curious how you get this gear earlier than anyone else? That’s some next level stuff right there.
Oh, you work for Nikon School. That’s awesome.
Wow! A scary video with Ricci getting up close and personal in the eye-detection demo. Seriously, a very helpful overview. Thanks, Ricci.
I very nearly left it out and I thought no it’s ok no ones looking at me they are looking at what the cameras doing .... hahaha 🤣
I assumed if Animal Eye detection is on, Human Eye detection is on too. Should I be switching back to Human if no dogs or cats are present? 😬
Was also hoping that Subject Tracking would get its own selectable mode (not just a subset of Auto Area AF). LOVE the internal battery grip contacts, much better approach (like my old D200!).
Thanks for an interesting & informative video as always!
Animal eye detect is not looking for a human body
@@RicciTalks Well - this should immediately improve my eye detect then 😆 Thanks!
Glad you like them and find them useful
Great video! I am on the fence between z6II and z7 first version for landscape photography. They are at about the same price now... any advice? :)
I pre-ordered my Z6ii. Hopefully they will also be able to reduce the sensor reading speed with dual processors. Good Video.
I only bought my Z6 in last 6 months do you think they will do firmware update for the new AF changes for the Z6
Thanks
Not heard anything yet but that could change next year
@@RicciTalks thanks met you at a Nikon day at Minsmere in 2019
Hi Ricci, thank you for the great video.
As usual, a great review. Thanks Ricci... I think I'll hold off upgrading just yet and wait for the Z9.
