  • These commercials aired on KCOP on February 9th, 1985
    1. Promo for "The Great Escape"
    2. Sanyo Beta Hi-Fi VCR
    3. California Dentist Association PSA
    4. AM/PM
    5. Lucky
    6. "Late Picture Show" Commercial Bumper
    7. Jamaica Tourism (Using the melody of John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" in a jingle for Jamaica tourism is certainly an...interesting choice. At this point in time Jamaica was in dire economic straits partly due to crime and political unrest/violence which led to a sharp decline in tourism)
    8. Pete Ellis Dodge
    9. Pioneer Chicken (With OJ Simpson. Double the OJ, double the awkwardness!)
    10. Snuggle Fabric Softener (Hey, it's the bear show! Based on the 1982 date stamp at the end, I think this is possibly the original commercial for this product...and Snuggle's first appearance!)
    11. "Late Picture Show" Commercial Bumper
    12. Record A Call Telephone Answering Machines (I remember the one we had back in the 80's was an enormous woodgrain monstrosity like this thing)
    13. Bounce Fabric Softener
    14. Comet (As a kid the cans of this stuff and Kraft Parmesan cheese looked basically identical to me back then)
    15. Stater Bros. Markets (This chain is still around but is only found in the LA area)
    16. "Late Picture Show" Commercial Bumper
    17. Wherehouse (I haven't thought about this chain in a LONG time. I had no idea that they once specialized in movie rentals...or that they had Merlin the wizard as their mascot with Paul Winchell voicing a friendly version of Gargamel from Smurfs! Also, I can't imagine Disney was thrilled at how similar this depiction of Merlin was to their own version of him from "The Sword In The Stone")
    18. Taco Bell (With William H. Macy well before his acting career took off. It's always incredible to post stuff like this!)
    19. Nissan 200 SX
    20. Grand Prix Race-O-Rama (AMAZING! The Go Karts look like fun, but let's be serious...the arcade looks awesome and was probably what most people went there for. This was a chain that also had at least one other location in Ft. Lauderdale Florida, which was frequented by the infamous Billy Mitchell)
    21. "Late Picture Show" Commercial Bumper
    22. Promo for "Support Your Local Gunfighter"
    23. Worthington Ford (The wacky commercials for this car dealership were another staple of LA local television)
    24. Reynolds Wrap
    25. KCOP Station ID
    26. Promo for "Support Your Local Sheriff and "Support Your Local Gunfighter" (Despite the similar title and featuring most of the same cast, "Support Your Local Gunfighter" was not technically a direct sequel and more of a remake/reboot that featured different characters)
    27. The Independent News (I left this short partial recording in as a bonus)
    a. Winter Storms
    b. Battle Of The Budget (Partial)

The 1980’s had the best of everything, even the commercials are golden.

Honestly, I miss seeing supermarket commercials where they show certain products that's on sale like we see from Lucky & Stater Bros. I also miss The Wherehouse where we used to rent video tapes from many movie titles at the time. Simpler times indeed.

9:25 - I miss arcades, and am glad I had my childhood in the 80s and my teen years in the 90s so I got to experience it all, from Pac-Man fever, to the beat ‘em up craze of Final Fight and TMNT, to the fighting revolution of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat.

Lucky- Those packages of Pilsbury Cake Mixes and Green Giant Vegetable cans featured in this commercial really bring back childhood memories for me, especially seeing them in the pantries in my relatives’ houses.
Snuggle Fabric Softener- Snuggle the Bear’s ragged looking appearance in this commercial adds to his charm and cuteness, I think.

I love the Grand Prix arcade ad. Maybe too much! Multiple copies of Defender and Popeye, that place was HUGE!
As well as Cal Worthington! He passed away in 2013 but all the dealerships were sold off with the iconic Long Beach location gone in 2023.

7:43 - I know it’s the same actor, but I keep on waiting for this wizard to start screaming about those medaling Smurfs…

I definitely knew the "Come to Jamaica" commercials long before I heard the John Lennon song.
Merlin reminds me of Service Merchandise's Silent Sam.
My summer camp in Miami visited Grand Prix once a year. One time, I nearly missed the bus going back because I was stuck on a particularly long Galaga game.

I love seeing retro tech, all the dials and lights and the remotes were awesome back then too! Now the tech is so much more advanced but they're so boring now, sleek and clean yes but boring to look at compared to tech back then

I was living in Long Beach at the time. I was 5. I wonder if i saw any of these. My parents rented from Werehouse all my time. I still remember the black clamshell cases

Wow an old commercial of Grand Prix Race o Rama! I used to go there back in the day, my parents would drive up from Miami and just leave me there for a few hours to go blow $50 on arcade games, my favorite was "Alien Versus Predator", was the first place I played Initial D on Arcade..that was about 2004-5 at the least...It turned into a spot called Boomers some time after they built the massive wooden roller coaster. It was a total loss after the huuricanes Katrina then later Irma. They demolished that place long time ago and built a designer center of America over it, however the old go-kart course I think is being operated by some small company, seen it used in another RUclipsr video (Taxi Garage), so in spirit it lives on! I miss that place

The commercial here is for the location in Pomona in the Los Angeles area and I assume the footage here is of that location. They were a national chain at the time of this recording.

You’ll find most Stater Bros. locations within the Inland Empire (Riverside & San Bernardino Counties). Still pretty small by supermarket chain standards, but super ubiquitous around those areas.
