    Rocket Rods opened at Disneyland in 1998 and closed just over 2 years later. This is video from multiple days - early 1998 during testing; from a POV ride with New Tomorrowland views also in 1998; and then a walk-through of the queue with the film and vintage ride vehicles, down the tunnel and a full front row POV ride in 2000!

      Yeah I literally thought the same thing. 2000 was 21 years ago. I couldn't believe it. I'm still stuck thinking it's just 10 years!

    That line was constantly long but there was so much eye candy, especially in that 360 theater. It was awesome and worth the wait with your family. 🥲🥹 Oh such beautiful, wonderful memories in that line with my family that I will cherish forever!!!!

    Took this ride twice way back in 1998! It broke down inside the building on our first ride! Staff members have to lead us out of the building, and given us a priority ride pass for our second ride! It was an OK ride, but the tyres given out really strong rubber smell! That's the most memorable part of the ride for me! LOL!

    Just think, this September 25th will be the 20th anniversary of the Peoplemover track sitting there doing absolutely nothing. What a momentous occasion it will be.

    Great video! I own the Rocket Rods sign from the exterior of the ride entrance, I bought it on eBay many years ago when Disney, for a short period of time, auctioned off memorabilia.

    I’m sad the track will most likely never be used again. This attraction damaged the structure so badly that it would need a complete rebuild.

      It's not just that, they tore out the original, more simpler, PeopleMover tire propulsion system. The track is wasted architecture now. One day, if there's a way to get up there before they tear it out, I will. Arrested, banned, whatever. It needs to be filmed for preservation. Ideally with a VR camera.

    This was an amazing ride in many aspects.
    Remember it was a prototype of many technologies, from true autonomics with each car having it's own computer, and basic awareness of the surrounding area and cars before and after it.
    The real problem was the high tourques and loading placed on the drive trains. They ripped themselves apart.

    The people movers tracks were not designed for high-speed use.

    3:55 that poor mark 3 monorail, was once the mouse-o-rail, now a scrapped vehicle since the interior was apparently in the worst condition.

  • @MrDash03

    Not modifying the tracks was a huge mistake especially without banked turns and the ride vehicles being much heavier than the Peoplemover cars.

  • @zeroconsequences
    @zeroconsequences 10 месяцев назад

    If they just abandoned the PeopleMover platform and replaced Circlevision with the Rocket Rods' queue idea of a museum of prior Disneyland attractions that hinted at what was to come (sort of an internal D23 showcase) it would have been a good holdover attraction in it's own right. But for some reason they needed to put a fast ride in there.

  • @joemazz958
    @joemazz958 4 года назад +3

    Create a new ride vehicle, a la peoplemover, configure it to ride on that same track, and slow it way down, and stress on the infrastructure would be nil.

    • @HauntFreak13
      @HauntFreak13 3 года назад +4

      By now the infrastructure is probably so screwed up from RR and general aging that it would need a complete rebuild.

    • @Elayzee
      @Elayzee 4 месяца назад

      They’re not even allowed to put another ride on that existing track because it’s completely out of code with fire hazard escape routs required for today’s standards. It would have to be completely gutted and rebuilt from scratch and brought up to code for today.

  • @TyrellDunn

    This ride had the potential to be one of the greatest rides in Disney Theme park history. If only it would have received the proper track that would have supported it and make it where it would not have to stop too much. Rocket Rods would still be here. I’d rather have that then the PeopleMover

    Why did they closed it after it opened for two years

    • @ohdogwow2
      @ohdogwow2 4 года назад +14

      The original People Mover track this ride was grafted onto wasn't designed to handle the physical stress the Rocket Rods put on the track. The track structural support was beginning to fail. It was cheaper to shut the ride down indefinitely than to fix the track. It's also why they never just put the people mover back in.

    • @andrewschannel4259
      @andrewschannel4259 4 года назад +8

      The ride was also astronomically unreliable. It broke down at least once a day and it frequently had wait times of over 2 hours as a result of its low capacity and intermittent shutdowns.

    • @HauntFreak13
      @HauntFreak13 3 года назад +2

      The tires would wear out quickly, the seats would tear, 3 hour wait times (due to incredibly low capacity) only to have it break down... it was a disaster. Such a shame because the concept was cool. Execution was just a huge failure.

    • @BungieStudios
      @BungieStudios 2 года назад +1

      @@ohdogwow2 They couldn't put the PeopleMover back in even if the structure was sound. They gutted the original, simpler tire propulsion system and installed the new, larger and more complex track for RocketRods.

    I Think They Should Have Just Possibly Decided To Turn The Ride "Test Track" Into "Rocket Rods" In Stead Because It Makes Way More Sense And Also Because I Really Like / Love The Rocket Rods Vehicle Design A Lot Better Then Test Track's Current Ride Vehicle's Design They Still Use For Test Track :( . Any Way Rocket Rods Ride Vehicle Is A Futuristic / Syfi Type Of Vehicle Design That I Think Would Match Test Track Really Well Plus Test Track As Disney World Ride Is Really Well Maintained And Up To Date For Rider's But It Needs A Bit More Syfi / Fun Futuristic Ride Vechicle Like The One From Rocket Rods Instead Of The Boring One It Has Still Just Saying Cause I Believe This To Be Very True :) , Especially Since Test Track Is Supposed To Be A Thrill Ride Of A Futuristic Ride Of Vechicle Testing Nothing Sounds As Right And As Close To Me In That Type Of Sense Then The Rocket Rods Ride Vechicle Highly Says To Me It Would Have Been A Truely Great Idea / Really Big Upsetting Missed Opportunity For "Test Track" To Become "Rocket Rods" It Would Be A Dream Come True To Me Personally :) . What Do You Think Comment Down Below If You Have Any thing To Say About This Ok Peace For Now Bye .
