- Become an Empire Builder expert by watching this video. It's a guide to Amtrak's Empire Builder train service between Chicago and Seattle/Portland. In this video you'll find the answers to general questions about Empire Builder, including:
Where does Empire Builder go?
What's the Empire Builder's schedule?
What's the history of Empire Builder?
What are the amenities on board (food, bedrooms, etc)?
Where can I go beyond Empire Builder?
Empire Builder connects Chicago, Illinois with Seattle, Washington and/or Portland, Oregon. Along the way, it passes through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, and Idaho. It's a great adventure, there is a dining car and there are options for sleeper accommodations, and the pace is relaxing.
See you on the rails!

The Empire Builder and The Zephr are the two best long runs in America,I've traveled both of them, beautiful views with both, and the best way to travel.train travelers tend to be more laid back, easy going, kind, nice, friendly, people. You meet interesting people on the train
Great video, Thank You. We Love the Empire builder!
I'm gonna be an Empire Builder in July from Seattle to Chicago stopping at Glacier National Park for a day. Looking forward. Thank you for the Empire Builder's complete overview and history 👍
Have a great time
I LOVE the Empire Builder. Amtrak staff rock!
been on this train many times and enjoyed more everytime. can't wait for my next trip.
This is great. Just moved to Portland last year, can't wait to ride this baby.
Do it!!
welcome
Great overview of the Empire Builder! I’ve taken this train twice before, once from St. Paul to Milwaukee a few years ago, and again last year from Chicago to Seattle in one go, as part of a cross-country trip originating in DC. Both times it was a really great experience, and I get to do it again in a few weeks, going from Portland to Chicago with a couple days in East Glacier to explore the park, so I’m really looking forward to experiencing this great train again
Sounds excellent. I want to go explore Glacier someday too. Riding by it it nice but... !
Hi, I have a question for both TID and BWI. My wife and I will be taking the Empire Builder from MSP to the west coast, and we are interested in a couple days in Glacier Nat'l Park. Unfortunately I have not been able to find information about the logistics... is it possible to stay somewhere close and not need to rent a car? Are there tours or ways to visit different parts of the park? Car rentals right now are thru the roof, it would be nice to find out how people have done stops at Glacier like this. Thanks!
Hi@@alwaystanning.The closest place you can get to the park without needing a car is the Izaak Walton Inn, conveniently located at the stop in Essex, MT. It is officially within park boundaries, and is close to some hiking trails that go through the park. If you want to get to the major sights within the park, the only way to get there is by road. The Inn has some cars that can be rented, but when I went there last year, the prices were relatively steep (still ended up renting there due to changes in plans, and it worked out ok in the end). There are bus tours of the park provided by local companies which depart from some other hotels that are closer to the main visitor areas of the park. Your best bet if you want to do this is to stay at the Glacier Park Lodge, which is a few steps away from the station in East Glacier, MT. This is where I was planning to stay last year, however it was closed due to COVID. It should be open now according to the website, so this might be your best bet to be able to see all the highlights of the park without needing a car
This is a nice video!

Your narration said, the rockies in Eastern Montana, Western, right,c; beautiful country,
I'm going to be doing this trip in a few months. I'll be riding in coach the whole way from Chicago to Seattle
Great, have fun!
@T1D Wanderer I'll be sitting in coach the whole way, so my experience will be a bit different
Taking the empire builder to Chicago from Portland then switching thrains to the capitol limited to Cleveland where we switch to another capitol linited to Toledo where we switch to a greyhound where we finish our trip in Columbus Ohio. 74 hour trip. Gonna be amazing never rode a Amtrak or a greyhound. Doing the trip in coach like a boss
Like a BOSS
@@T1DWanderer it’ll be amazing
I looked forward to riding the EB in retirement, but being 2 hours from the nearest depot in north Minnesota the schedule is totally unworkable. A 2 hour drive to get on or get home, always between 1-5 am, and having to sleep during the day is a NO-GO. The schedule is no doubt designed for convenience of folks at either end, and might also work good for a few folks in podunk somewhere Montana.
Given that many who ride trains are elderly with flexible schedules, would it not make sense for Amtrak to figure out a time when their schedule gets tight and simply let 12 hours expire before next departure. Once a week, once every 2 weeks, maybe one train a month. A few “night people” in Chicago and on the west coast might like it? The folks in traditional “dark areas” could schedule their trips for the occasional “flipped” schedule trains, get on in the daytime and actually get a nights sleep in the train. As is for my trip, North MN or Spokane is 2 consecutive nights sleep lost going either way, an impossible daytime sleep period, and then 2 days jet lag to recover. Ain’t gonna happen!

Enjoyed your video. Thinking of the trip. My father was late for Thanksgiving 1942 he was at fort lewis train to millville new Jersey then a tour of the pacific. Millville to phila no train now I took one of the last bud trains stopped in 1972. 1972 one to phila one from phila per day. 1939 about 10 each way each day. Do you think this route empire builder is the route used in 1942 yours truly evans w Robinson
I’m taking the chi-SeaTac run in April
Have fun!
Hey does train from chi to sea stop at every stop like ppl board on at evry stop or no ???
This looks incredible and you sell it really well!
Slightly confused about the sleeper car accommodations as I've never done this and am planning a trip from Chi to Portland: Do you buy the sleeper cabins when you buy your ticket, or when you get on the train itself? I don't see anywhere to buy them on the Amtrak site but if you just buy them on the train then that makes sense.
Thanks!
I believe you can only buy the sleepers at the time you buy the ticket, not on board. You choose the route and times, and it tells you what seating/room options are available then.
Anyone have different info?
Rooms are the roomette option on the website. Then you’ll get the option to choose a family room or just a roomettev
How can I get the ticket?
Amtrak.com is the best way. They have an app too.
Can you get off at a stop and catch the next day’s train for free? We are planning to go from Seattle to Chicago.
Not for free. I *think* you have to buy two tickets, but check with Amtrak because there may be some multi-ride deal currently.
T1D Wanderer ah ok got it. Thanks! Keep posting these train trips. We love watching them.
You have to buy multiple tickets, but it is not significantly more expensive.
They used to have a program where you were allowed to have two or three stops along the way. They discontinued that option?
You can buy a rail pass good for 10 legs within 30 days. PRICE goes up and down. Look for when it is low and save it for when you need it. The 30 days starts when you take your first leg.
