Every car I have ever owned has never had secured mats. Never had any problems. 👍

Those floor mat checks are STILL happening at Toyota service to this day! It’s in the paperwork you get back when they finish your service be it oil change or whatever.

Just undo the clips when getting car serviced at dealership and see if they are fastened when one gets the car back😅

It's listed on the pre delivery inspection form as a specific line item. It's also on the new customer checklist. Then there's a section in the manual about it. Every Toyota going in for any service at a dealership is supposed to have a floor mat safety check done as part of the multi point inspection. Its among the first items to check. And finally, the floor mat hooks on the new Toyotas have this very interesting twist lock feature. You place the mat over the retainer, turn the hook 90 degrees and it clicks into place, holding the floor mat. Very easy to remove. The older Toyotas have that one-way hook, like on the prius, which makes getting the mat off a bit challenging if you're in a rush. That's how people pull out the hooks. Either being impatient, or on accident, or just from repetitive wear. The new floor mat hooks are a very nice piece of engineering. Superior to any other car I've used. The OEM mats also come with this big yellow notice sewn to them talking about the safety of floor mats and how you're supposed to install them. It's in 12 different languages.

I have similar mats in my 06 Tundra DC and I had the opposite problem! I couldn't seem to accelerate going up hills. Flat road was fine. Took it to my shop and they test drove it and had the same issue until it was discovered that the aftermarket floor mat had crept up and under the accelerator, just as you described! This was a first for me, and I have been driving Toyota trucks since 1984. Now, I check my mats and pull them to the seats when I get in!😊

Great safety tip. You can't buy OEM mats for my mom's 2004 Camry LE so we wound up buying third party and then using brass rivets to make secure holes in the third party mats so they worked with the safety pins.

Hey Peter, I've just cleaned my "corolla" MAF sensor, for now the 3rd time since I've owned it. Just like you've shown me, from your vid. Thank you VERY MUCH!

I have had those exact rubber floor mats in my 3 Corolla's for years. Never had a problem. I know there is a possibility it could get stuck but they never have.

I just purchased a set of OEM floor mat hooks for a new-to-me 2014 Yaris. Why they were missing, I don't know.

I may be dating myself, but there was a scandal with Audi, where cars would accelerate unexpectedly.
Turned out to be operator error 😅

Yes, I remember this, on the news. I've since bought "Weather Tec" mats, and they too come with they're own "HOOKS" , but I still use the stock Toyota HOOKS, works FINE!

It is interesting that you don't hear about this problem with other auto manufactures, but Toyota's are the most popular selling vehicles in America

I recently bought 2003 4Runner, the carfax says it has outstanding 'recall' for gas pedal...I assume it is this same safety issue that the previous owner never had done. I have aftermarket heavy rubber mats installed.

It was a CHP officer and his family that was driving on the 125 freeway where it met with Mission Gorge Road. It was a rented Lexus from Bob Baker Lexus. They knew that the floor mats were bad and crumpled up, yet they let the car out.
The Bob Baker dealership was sued and ultimately closed. Bob Baker died and is probably burning in hell for all of the bad dealerships and burned customers.

It should be common sense that if you are accelerating and your cruise control is not on that the petal is probably being depressed and to have a look at the accelerator.

Update: I ordered the floor hooks and installed one for my driver's side mat. My 06 only has one hole for the hook, so I attached it easily and the OEM mat slides right on. I added my rubber mat on top by poking a hole and slipping it onto the hook as well. Thank you for mentioning this issue. It reminded me to take care of it asap!

I was driving my Toyota Avalon to Camp Pendleton, CA to visit my daughter and niece. They were preparing to deploy to Iraq when I heard this story over the radio. The local dealership altered the accelerator pedal and checked the ECM and reflashed it with a new software update that Toyota implemented. In the end, there were “run away” Toyotas as the media perpetuated. It was all man made laziness and lack of common sense for a few Toyota owners that created this nightmare. 😅😅😅
