I Built & HYDRO-DIPPED a JEM Guitar...what would Steve Vai think?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 24 окт 2019
- This episode shows how to build and hydrodip a DIY guitar body. The process of hydro-dipping a guitar is also known as a swirl dip, swirl paint, or swirling. I used basic woodworking skills to build the guitar body, and the swirl paint finish is inspired by Steve Vai’s Ibanez JEM guitar. I’ve seen a lot of videos about how to swirl dip or hydrodip a guitar, but I’ve never seen anyone use woodworking skills to build the guitar body from scratch before swirl-dipping it, so I decided to try it. I also couldn’t find any videos showing how to make the Steve Vai Ibanez JEM body shape by hand, so I hope people find that interesting too. :)
For the woodworking aspect, I used my X-Carve CNC to make the templates for the guitar body. I then used a router to cut the neck pocket, pickup cutouts, and cutout for the Floyd Rose tremelo. I then used hand tools to carve the two signature features of Steve Vai's JEM guitar - the monkey grip handle and lion's claw tremolo cutaway. For the hydro-dip, I went with Magic Marble paints -- they make swirl dipping easier than any other type of paint I tried (including Humbrol, 1Shot, and Rustoleum). I then used Spraymax 2k clear coat to give the guitar a glossy finish.

Hey, Vai here. Well, I absolutely love seeing things like this. Anytime someone is fulfilling their creative passion, it's fascinating to behold, and this is no exception. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this. Franky, sometimes I have no idea what goes into actually building a guitar, meaning the amount of precise focus and time that's necessary. And watching you so conscientiously building this guitar is inspiring to me. I have the easy part, I just play them! You make lovely instruments and I'm honored to have had a little hand in inspiring this one. Best of luck with your work. Deep appreciation.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! 🙏
@@modustrial not the real Steve Vai... this is his channel:

Nice try, but you're not Steve Vai. The actual Steve Vai's channel is "SteveVaiHimself," as pointed out by Twobarpsi. If you're going to impersonate someone, at least put some effort into it. You've been reported for impersonation to RUclips. Enjoy.
@@kyeronelma4835 👍
@@Twobarpsi or is the first his personal channel and stevevaihimself his corporate channel
You need to contact Vai and present him the guitar as a gift. He's the kinda guy that would love it and and actually play it live.
If someone knows how to put me in touch, I'm all for it 😀
I just sent the video to Steve's twitter. hopefully he responds. Link is in a separate comment.
@@nicolausteslaus He isn't a well practiced player, which he says right in the video. If you knew anything about guitar you'd know that guitar is a well built good sounding instrument. TONE IS IN THE FINGERS.
Vai can't play this guitar live. He's in a contract with Ibanez. He can't play an Ibanez copy man, come on. That would create tension between to two, longstanding brands of Vai and Ibanez.
@@joshuamichael4312 Vai can play whatever he wants live. What is Ibanez going to do? Drop him? That doesn't seem very smart on their end.
Bet he would be like "damn son get that thing outta the water"
🤣🤣😁
More like “get it out of the trash can!” Or “use a different bucket!” 😂
Totally not related to the guitar, but the hydro-dipping gave me a fantastic idea for a Lightsaber I'm building.
Enjoyed the video, it inspired me.
A hydrodip lightsaber would be so cool! If you share pics on Instagram, please tag me so I can check it out! @modustrialmaker
@@modustrial, I'm not on Instagram, but I am on Twitter and Reddit.
I did go ahead and dip it today. It looks pretty good, but I did end up with a couple spots where the paint globbed up. Did you encounter that? If so, what'd you do about it?
@@HungLikeScrat Yea, that happens sometimes, usually if the part bobs up before you clear the surface. Also, when you pull the stir stick out of the water, it can create a glob at the spot where it exits. I always am careful to pull the stir stick out at the very edge, so if it makes a glob, its not at a location where it will get on the item being dipped. Did you end up sharing pics of it anywhere? If so, can you send a link?
Yes! Steve Vai would be thrilled! BTW I recommend EVERYONE find a copy of Passion and Warfare. It is truly an epic album!
That would be really cool if he saw it! And yea PAW is a fantastic album (album.....what a crazy concept these days.... 🤣)

Great persistence, great camera angle during the dip and great outcome!
Thanks much!
Bro, if Vai really give you a compliment, it's just only one Steve Vai but you got thousands compliment from us who loves to see the result that you have done which is outstanding and marvellous . Good job buddy. Greetings from Singapore.
Thanks Sham!
I have been waiting for this video for so long, and now it's here!!!
Me too! 😁
That looks super dope bro. 👌😎
Thanks Brian!
This is so impressive. You put your heart into it which makes it even more special!! I am in awe!
Thanks for the very kind words Beth!
Great job!! Waiting for more builds man. Cheers!
Thanks Guillermo!
Приятно наблюдать искреннюю радость от сделанного своими руками! Поздравляю чувак, это новый уровень! )
Finally! I've been excited to see this build since you mentioned it like 20 years ago haha! - Nice touch bringing the granddad's tools into the mix. Gives the guitar a little bonus. Made from your and his hands so to speak.
Thanks brother! It was great to put his tools to work. Next one will be quicker, I hope 🤞🤞
@@modustrial I'm only teasing ya I know you're a busy man! This was awesome regardless. Also make that hydrodipping video! Have you tried using rustoleum metallic paints for it??
i really liked seeing the draw knife and rhasps/files come out. i planed down a storm window to fit over the weekend with my grandads old hand plane and spoke shave/rhasp plane. it was nice to see them shave again and not have to deal with the drama of loud power tools. it's important to know how to use and care for those old tools.
The old hand tools really are satisfying to use! There are tasks for every type of tool, and the important thing is chosing the right tool for the job 😀
Your rusty playing is my goal. 😂😂 so freakin cool
Ha, thanks Tamar! This one took me back to high school bands and skateboarding ... The good ole days ....
@@modustrial i got one suggestion, change the color of the neck and bridge pickup to neon pink, neon green, OR neon sky blue.. for the total 80's look
Epic end result! Love videos like this.
Thanks Matthew!
Fun change of pace! It's really great, plus it was fun to watch the dipping process... over... and over... and

Thanks Mahdi! Glad you found me!
Amazing job! 👏👏👏👏👏 With stand up ovation 😉👍 Awesome! Thanks for sharing this. Keep on rocking!
Thanks much!
This is such a cool video, I love the way the guitar looks, good job man!
Just watched both guitar videos you have. I must say you should make more! Especially the epoxy trying different materials or make one out of that green acrylic that would be epic! Great job man keep up the awesome work.
Thanks Shane! I'm hoping they catch on because I'd like to make a few guitars every year.... So many things you can be creative with in guitar builds. Green acrylic would be really cool.
Bro, you've got a lot of patience. The detail on the lion claw is amazing. 👍
Thanks Odin! This one definitely tried my patience 😀
I’ve been getting into build videos, this channel definitely one of my favorites. I love all these videos
Thank you! 🙏

Fantastic work mate, would love to see another guitar build. The colours came out amazingly well, I completely agree that you can't rest until it looks exactly the way you want it to!
Thank you! My second guitar build is in the works. Video should be out in a week or so.
Really enjoyed this ,am a huge fan of Steve’s and saving up for a Jem at the moment , really love the result you got from your build well done it was a treat to watch
Great job! Love the dipping photos from inside the dipping bucket!! This guitar really came out nice, and the other dips look pretty good too! your becoming quite the luthier, this is inspiring as i have always dreamed of making my own guitars and drum shells
That looks and sounds amazing! Great job
Phenomenal job, brother! Wow. What an awesome project.
thank you!
I can't do DIY and stuff to save my life! I'm a guitarist and this popped up on my feed so gave it a view. Very entertaining, a great JEM build and you're a good guitarist for 20 years of barely playing! My favourite bit about the build is the clear acrylic backplates. VERY nice!
Thanks Dale! I'm hoping to get back into playing more this year 😀
My favorite part of this guitar is the back with the see thru cavity plates. Kudos man it looks fantastic
Thanks Pablo!
What an amazing project, thanks for sharing
Thanks much!
Awesome build and video. Thanks
Love both the process you did to make that epic Ax as well as your skill playing it. I am currently trying to start my own band and love playing the electric guitar as well as writing lyrics.
Thanks to you, i have even more inspiration to go off of. Thanks!
Thank you for the kind words!
Looks killer. Respect for not giving up on your goal.
Thank you!
Looks great. Love the clear covers for the trem and electronics. Great idea. I'm partial to maple necks. I think they provide a better contrast.
Thanks! And I hear ya, I looked for a donor guitar with maple neck, but when I found the JEM JR with traditional vine inlay for $200, I couldn't pass it up....so compromises were made 🤷♂️
wow!!! Amazing!!! great job in the guitars, my congrats!!!!!
Thanks again Ale!
I remember the poster you had to put together in guitar magazine of Steve vai when the album was coming out. It was an exciting time for guitar players.
good memories.... :)
Beautiful work, dude. Really wonderful guitar! Fantastic! 😃
Thank you! 😁
u are a legend man and a down to earth guy!
great job and those see through cavity covers are very cool - nice
Thanks Neddi!
Mike!!!! I love everything about this video and build! I picked up A TON of tricks and tips as always, even ones as simple as the pickup selector x-acto hack...very cool! And the acrylic cavity plates were such a clutch last minute decision! Pumped for the next one man!
Thanks Ethan! This one was so fun.... Now, I'm going to go play with Legos, if you get my drift ;)
Heck yeah!
The fluorescent green was so beautiful. I would have loved that one for myself.
Thank you!
Turned out so good! And your playing wasn’t too shabby for 20 years of not playing. I’m going to be in the same boat for mine that we are posting later this week!
Thanks man! Hopefully yours gets a few more views than mine ;)
What a project mate, no wonder it took a while, it looks fantastic,
Very very well done 👍👍🏻👍👍🏻👍👍🏻👍

Great job man, looks killer!
Thank you!
Outstanding work
Thanks Wade!
amazing job Mr.!!
Thank you!!
Would love to see more on the hydro-dipping and I can see how it became addictive. One of the reasons I only watch the acrylic swirl art videos...but if I did it on plywood, I could sand and re-spin as many times as I wanted. Well, within reason. Great build and when you get those knobs printed, you should add an LED or three to light up those panels. I mean, you will be dialing it up to 11, right?
LEDs, maybe epoxy....did I mention I want to make more guitars? :)
Amazing🤩 🤩
I love it😻
Dude this is so cool! Great job
Thank you!
Awesome work!
Thanks much!
just amazing!!!
Thanks Phanor!
The Universe Speaks! I've been holding out on same kit for over 2 years cuz of the paint. Didn't want just white...and just like that your vid pops up! Whoa Nelly this project just hit mach speed! Thank you sir for sharing this how to! FULLY EXCITED! SKIN CHILLS! GREAT AWESOME WORK! 😎😲😵😁
Thank you! Stoked that I could provide a little inspiration 😁
Great woodworking skills
Thank you for this informative video! I plan on dipping an old drum kit of mine and this video really helped me get an idea of what to do!
Thanks Jamie! Glad to help :)
@@modustrial sorry to bother you but i just wanted to ask a quick question. I plan on doing a swirl of 3 colours on my kit, its a pretty small 4 piece kit. How many bottles of paint do you think i will need to dip them all? I was just going to buy 1 of each but after seeing how small the bottles are im wondering will i need 2 of each, thanks for the help!
Passion and warfare is one of my all time favorite albums!

loved the forest green one :)
Vai would say, "learn to play first, then worry about what your guitar looks like" Good job on the build, and it's always interesting to see how people do color dip. It looks great.
Ha, thanks! That is probably accurate 🤣

Awesome! Steve vai should see this!
Thanks! Curious what he would say :)
Really great job , good for You .
Thanks Felix!
That looks sweet! I failed miserably on my hydo-dip attempts, so I came up with a different way to make my Jem 7 string build stand out.
I poured puddles of 3 different colors on the body, placed clear painters plastic over the top, and ran over it with a wooden dough roller. It came out hauntingly beautiful...like straight out of a Cthulhu Mythos.
Thank you! And your process sounds interesting..... Do you have pics anywhere?
@@modustrial My smart phone takes stupid pictures, but I managed to take a few. I haven't posted them anywhere yet, but I probably could.

That is a really cool effect - I dig it! 👍👍
Such a great video, thank you! Man I wish the pick ups and knobs were black, it'll give it such a classy vibe, and amplify this astounding color scheme (which deserves the most attention)
Thanks Gil! I was trying to keep close to the original Ibanez 80s Jem, which had neon pickups. If you haven't checked those out do a Google images search... There are so many cool variations on it
That came out clean!
Thanks Milan!
Ecxelente calidad de vídeo y de trabajo, saludos desde México 🇲🇽
I also have built several swirled Ibanez JEM's and RG's. I've always just done it with used guitar bodies or already routed blanks It's definitely a learned process as you've shown here! I did a PAW and a custom Blue/Green JEM and actually took used necks, removed the fretboards and put new fretboards on them with the disappearing pyramid scheme with kits you can buy on eBay. Those necks took a long time to do but, I did them! Clear coating was a bitch because, like you, I couldn't find one that would harden all the way so they could be wet sanded. Then I found the 2K clear which solved the problem.
Building electric guitars is one of the most rewarding things I've ever done! Thanks for the awesome video, Sir!
Glad you enjoyed it! Sounds like you made some really cool JEMs....do you have pics of them anywhere? Would love to check em out!
Wow what a build
